Foreword from the Commissioner
Guandu is located at the convergence of rivers and the sea. Since ancient times, its rich ecology has attracted a diverse assemblage of migratory birds. Farmers transformed the floodplain into rice paddies and have cultivated the land following seasonal rhythms. In addition to growing food, customs and rituals derived from farming practices are also the important values of the paddy fields. History is not just the past. It has been lived in our daily life and become the innovative inspirations for the present. This year, the Guandu International Nature Art Festival worked on the theme With Paths Crisscrossing to explore the ambiguous relationship between urban development and the historic rice paddies kept in the Guandu Plain. The invited artists acquainted themselves with local surroundings and some issues though a one-week field study and then finished their on-site creation with the help of volunteers. Thus, they were able to experience the cultural context sensationally and externalize their ideas into art pieces in response to real situations. This event allowed us to see the possibility of art as a bridge to connect people and nature, and as a catalyst to pass down the tradition and enrich cultural development. We anticipate this meaningful event can bring together public awareness and encourage dialogues among different groups with the power of art. A new paradigm of transmitting the commitment to nature is therefore to be built.

This year marked the 12th Guandu International Nature Art Festival. With the annual theme With Paths Crisscrossing, the resident artists have transformed the knowledge about the rice paddies in the Guandu area, the local culture, and the surrounding landscapes into their unique artworks. For instance, Crisscrossing Wings embeds the relationship between urban development and the environmental impact in the inner structures of a dragonfly wing; Han's Path provides an alternative way to view the rice paddies; Where Have All the Mud-Balls Gone? reminds us to pay attention to the hidden warning. All of these woks offer a chance for us to rethink our role in environmental conservation. Besides, the Festival has made some new attempts as well. For example, a series of workshops were organized to document people's expectations for their surrounding environment. A sound installation of on-site ultrasonic recording of the bats provides us a way to feel the different species coexisting with the human. Guandu Nature Park is the emerald of Taipei. The Taipei City Government has long devoted to protecting the natural environment and will continue working with the Wild Bird Society of Taipei to safeguard the Guandu Nature Park and make it shine.

Guandu Nature Park is a site for ecological conservation and environmental education, with the facilities like the nature center and the birdwatching 2006
cabins for visitors to get closer to Nature. In 2006, the Park initiated the Guandu International Nature Art Festival. Artists from all over the world are invited to come to Taiwan and create environmentally focused outdoor installation using on-site natural materials for example, bamboo, soil, and branches trimmed after typhoons. The Festival has now put its emphasis on the local community and the surrounding environment. I think, the most important thing for this event now is not just to present the beautiful artworks but to tell stories about the land. I would like to thank the Ministry of Culture, the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government, the Taipei City Animal Protection Office, and the Asia Pacific Hotel for their generous sponsorships. Next, I d like to extend my gratitude to our partners including the Soundscape Association of Taiwan, the Bamboo Curtain Studio, the Taipei Municipal Fu-an Junior High School, the Shezi Aesthetics Association for their full support. ꡠ庋㕜ꥹ荈搭谁遯㷎 About the Festival 2006 2016
Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival, dating back to 2006, was Taiwan's first largescale natural art event held in a conservation park. The park is located in Guandu wetland, a place with unique estuary culture and diverse ecosystem. The purpose of this event is not only about art and aesthetics but also about delivering messages caring for the environment. With the experience in the past ten years, this art event has come to a new stage by resetting its title into Guandu International Nature Art Festival since 2016. The triangle composed of river culture, wetland conservation, and environmental art is still the solid foundation of the curatorial concepts. It is expected to serve as a catalyst to deepen the public s awareness of our environment, as well as care for local cultures. It is hoped that every single participant of this festival will take the initiative to connect with their surroundings, to get inspired by nature, and to make an effort in finding a way to a sustainable future. Besides inviting artists coming to Guandu to make work on site, the Festival has now expanded into a complex project combines with a variety of art, education, and public engagement programs. In order to deepen the participatory experience to acknowledge the core value of this project, both the artist-in-residence and volunteer programs are changed to involve more explorations of local stories. There are also several educational programs which are co-developed with our partners: Sound of Wetland with the Soundscape Association of Taiwan , Adventure Time in Shezi with the Bamboo Curtain Studio. A series of activities related to the aesthetics of life, such as Natural Art DIY, Nature Fun for Little Kids, and Guandu Walk, has also been included this year. 9

Located at the junction of Tamshui River and Jilong River, Guandu Nature Park is a nature park of wetland preservation with landscape consisting of an integrated wetland environment of swamp and pond. It is a great inhabitation for a rich variety of organisms, as well as an important pass-by stop for migratory birds in their annual migration route. Hence, it has been recognized by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area IBA . The park, authorized by Taipei City Government, is currently administrated under the Wild Bird Society of Taipei WBST and devotes care to wetland and wild birds' conservation.

The idea is to create a wing inspired by dragonfly wings. As this wing has an inner structure with a transparent layer, the artist has the imagination that this structure could be pathways and roads, almost a man-made landscape of pathways crisscrossing. The visitors shall discover a dragonfly wing and by coming closer realize a map of roads, ponds, and houses as the structure of the wing. The geography of the Park may be found on the wing as well. The piece will raise attention to the dragonflies, one of the remarkable insects linked to the local environment and an indicator of water quality. The dragonflies and the rice paddies always have a kind of partnership.

using Google Maps to see the rice paddies from the sky. Visually Google
the rice paddy offers me flat and long rectangular shapes, but in places, the shapes turned diagonal into a dynamic figure and the part that I use. This figure from the rice field I put flat and horizontal on the top of bamboo poles. I made it my design by changing a few proportions and extending some of the shapes. It is site specific on the hill in the open space on the observation side of the building. The viewer can to go inside it, look down upon from the 2nd-floor observatory and looked up at from the walking path. The simplicity of line and materials are important to me; each line is essential to the structure as a whole. The bamboo that I harvested came from in and around the park and I used recycled chopsticks for the pegs in the junctions to hold the work in place. But as a safety precaution, the junctions and

Walking through the Guandu neighbourhood, I was attracted by the pattern on the windows. They set a frame for the scene that we perceive and, at the same time, redirect how we interpret the city with nature by initiating dialogues between the reality and our individual perspective. These windows were translated into an abstract language which is formed by lines and shapes. It may resemble the last rice paddies left in Guandu visually but, speculatively, it also represents diverse voices and viewpoints crisscrossing each other. When they encounter and start a conversation, they are creating different possibilities and future scenarios for this place, and thus the city and our humanity. My installation aims to offer an alternative approach to unveil the dissimilarity, to welcome such distinction as well as to rethink our responsibility for nature and culture. It is a collection of windows placed in various positions in the park highlighting different hidden sceneries which serve as a stimulus for the audience to reconsider the relationship among the nature, the tradition, and the city modernisation through art. Earthworms live in the soil. During the day they burrow underground; at night they come to the surface to feed on decaying leaves and microorganisms. Earthworms ingest small soil particles and excrete in the form of casts, which is an important index of earthworm species richness as well as soil fertility. In addition, earthworms remove heavy metal from the soil and accumulate it in their body tissues. The application of organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides has caused the decline of earthworms. In other words, earthworms are an indicator of metal pollution in soil. The advent of chemical pest control has inadvertently and irreversibly harmed earthworms and the soil micro-organisms. The significance of paddy fields to the city is as earthworms to the soil. They both play a role in ecological purification and restoration. Guandu Plain, like an earthworm to its soil, the Taipei Basin, positively change the structure of their environments, and is essential to a healthy ecosystem. This artwork was inspired by earthworm feces in the shape of mud balls. Muds in the park were collected and processed into clays and arranged into a labyrinth. The circuitous rather than blockingup labyrinth routes allow people to walk in and reflect upon the ecological changes when they have to make a detour. This artwork offers a chance for people to know more about the behavior of earthworms, and also works as a reminder of the decline of worm castings in the paddy fields, which is an alert to the environmental crisis. This is an issue that no one can sit on the sidelines. 60

愈衞欰 Yannick Dauby Background in musique concrete and improvisation, using found objects, electroacoustic devices and phonographies. When I first visited the Guandu Wharf, I was attracted by the numerous burrows on the intertidal mudflat. They were home to mudskippers, a safe shelter with constant ebb and flow. This reminded me of how Guandu Nature Park acts as a buffer between urban development and nature reserves, to preserve a home for birds, fiddler crabs, and mudskippers, as well as a sanctuary for agitated minds of human beings. Inspired by the mudskippers holes, this work is metaphor of the role of Guandu Nature Park as a guardian of wetlands, a unique habitat for wildlife and humans. The site where the work is now located was the land cultivated by our ancestors. This work is thus a memento of the crisscrossed farmlands passed on. And also, an imprint of our own history.

Kaling Diway is an artist from Hualien s Fengbin Township, which is home to the Makotaay community of Pangcah Amis Aborigines. He is active in the art community in East Taiwan and has participated in the North Coast Art Field, Original Living Art Festival, East Coast Land Art Festival, Hweilan International Artists Workshop etc. He is expert in reconstructing, deconstructing, recomposing and sculpting of the natural materials. The annual focus of the 2017 Guandu art project is on the rice paddies. To acquaint the 2017 artists with this subject, they were

involved in a one-week field study period before they started to create their own art piece. They began with the knowledge of hydrological environment of the Taipei Basin by watching a documentary about the Tamsui River, and later visited the Guandu neighborhood to build up a picture of the natural surroundings, industries, and culture in this specific area. To see Guandu from a wider perspective, some specialists were invited to share their expertise on ecosystem of the wetlands and rice paddies, and the geographical relations with the areas around. By visiting a local farmer, the artists explored the interplay between the

environmental conditions and crop production through his farming experience. The agricultural landscape in contrast to the urban constructions afar therefore provides us with a great deal of food for thought: should we veer off into anticipated economic growth and let go of the agricultural industry, history and culture here? What can we do at this changing crossroads? Through field trips and case studies, the artists deepened their understanding of the environmental, cultural, and social aspects about Guandu and thus created artworks in response to these issues to highlight the diverse but unique values of the rice paddies. 4

With the assistance of the volunteers, the Guandu art project celebrated its 12th anniversary in 2017. Since last year, the volunteer program was redesigned for deepening the participants understanding the Guandu area and broadening their perspectives of the local issues. In response to the annual theme on the role of

rice paddy, a two-day orientation was offered to the 19 volunteers to give a topical guide to history and environment of Guandu. They also experienced farming and learned the subject from a broader view by walking into real rice fields. After the training, they cultivated their own abilities to see deeper through the processes of art creation and interpretation. The volunteer program was expected to act as a window into local culture and environment; therefore creating a network among people caring for the area. Public participation is a key element in this art project. Besides the volunteer program mentioned above, other channels of participation, such as corporate volunteering program and singleday volunteering opportunities, were also offered. We hope more and more people can find a comfortable way to be involved in this project, and thus respond to the call to treasure our earth.

Guandu Nature Park is located near the suburb of Taipei, where is a highly developed city. In order to know the impact of sound on wetland organisms, we have cooperated with Soundscape Association of Taiwan since 2016 by placing sound recording equipment in the reserve area to monitor the long-term change of soundscape. We also co-organized different workshops and activities to inviting the public to understand the environment through listening.

Adventure Time in Shezi: Explore Our Hometown
Guandu Plain and Shezidao lie on both sides of Keelung River and interact closely with each other. Both of them used to be the origins of major crops. They are located in less-developed areas in Taipei City, inviting a lot of expectations and visions from all parties. But do they expect and envision the same things as the inhabitants do? Adventure Time in Shezi: Explore Our Hometown steps outside Guandu Plain to find out the insiders that s what most of the inhabitants call themselves real mindset. It is hoped that such a project could unveil the living circle in Tamsui River Basin. The three-year project led by Guandu Nature Park in cooperation with Bamboo Curtain Studio gathered people of old and young to listen to stories about their hometown, look for collective memories, visions and the best version of this beautiful place. Not only that, they were convened to tell their own stories in the form of art. The 2016 event focused on the topic of water. Taipei Municipal Fuan Elementary School scouts were taught about changes from 1963 since the attack of Typhoon Gloria to the present time in water-related incidents from the mouths of elders. One of the participating youngster said, I have never know this place this much. If it were not for the activity, we would not have taken an adventure in the wetland ourselves! The 2017 event aimed to connect people with land by feelings. The same approach was taken to introduce the students of Taipei Municipal Fu-an Junior High School to the stories of their hometown in a way that connected them with the land. Those students learned to explain themselves more confidently. Things didn t go as smoothly as expected in the first place, for those youngsters had been lulled by the tedious and futile life. Considering this, this program made it a priority to raise their consciousness and awareness of themselves and surroundings in daily life. In each of the discussions, we put what they may see, feel, take interest in or find important into three categories: industries, culture and ecology. They delved into these categories by means of field survey and kept a log of almost every survey. What they wrote down constantly reminded them to pay close attention to everything about their hometown, however seemingly trivial they were. The 2017 event was concluded with the Shezidao Walk showing visitors around and telling them about the stories of the place. See the remarks for the visitors feedback and Pottery. In the last class, the students decorated Guandu Nature Park with their works of pottery. One student wrote in the description of the work My Memory of Shezidao, If Shezidao were a plate, it must have been the one full of good memories. If it were a broken plate, that meant part of memories were lost. And every one of us who live here would have no excuse for retrieving our part of memories. In the year of 2017, we set out on the roads in Shezidao and looked at the place through the lens of these junior high students.

After field survey, we gave students film cameras and set them up for interviews with community staff. They were given a limited amount of time to see beyond what schools could offer and record the most precious scenes and moment. They turned ordinary life into an adventure, digging out both unique and yet-to-be-improved things about their hometown.

What do you see in the place where you grow up? After a month-long awareness-raising program, we attempted to introduce to those who registered Shezidao Walk diverse aspects of this place. As an expert of presenting by art, Bamboo Curtain Studio led the students to think and to draw what they wanted to share about the place on the cards as a way to construct their story about life in Shezidao.

The opening of the Nature Art Festival on 5th, Nov., 2017. Visitors took the shuttle bus to take part in Shezidao Walk hosted by these junior high students. Their guide was sincere and rustic. Yet they were confident in presenting the true colors of local life. This was the very testimony of actual lifestyle and the values of living environments in their own words.

They had learned to live a conscious life, knowing the place as unique and beautiful. Meanwhile, they also opened their eyes that could identify problems. After contact with tourists, they reviewed likes and dislikes in daily life. Furthermore, they wrote down these likes and dislikes and tried to figure out ways to solve the problems together.

Four months of adventures had nearly come to an end. It was time to present their thoughts and ideas in the special exhibition in Guandu Nature Park. They shared with viewers every different value of living environments from all perspectives in the form of action and art. We wish the 2017 participants would continue to care for this land and discover more secret corners even during the times when they are exhausted from pressure in life.

One day, an employee meets a talking egg. Let s call him Eggie. He asks, Can you help me find my parents? The employee gives him a helping hand, walking with him across the forest, wetland, grassland, and the tunnel. They run into small animals living in this park. At last, the exhausted Eggie find his cattle egret parents. He lies with peace of mind between his parents on the grass, fast asleep.

Find Out Who Lives in the Tree Flat?
Long long time ago, when Guandu Plain is a beautiful place. There are trees, fields, and a lot of creatures livening here. But with humans moving in, trees are chopped down, animals driven away, and the plain turned into a desolated place. Some notice that it has become too quite in here. So they start to plant trees, one by one, hoping the trees will grow tall and strong after the rain season comes. The plain will be bustling soon. That s what they believe.

Big Girl the Buffalo is the hostess of Guandu Nature Park. Other members of the party are: Missy, Azuki, Potato, Jelly, and Tangyuan. There are six of them. Day after day they graze, roll in the grass, and run around. After eating, they would leave a super-sized dung for a swarm of insects to feast on. Birds that reside permanently in the park are called resident birds. There are, however, some others, also known as migratory birds, never stop singing in the winter, Every winter I will go to Taiwan, to Taiwan
. None of the
birds look alike. They live in different types of environments and their nests look dissimilar. Black-winged stilt has a longer beak, blackfaced spoonbill has a spoon-shaped one, while a sparrow s beak look like a clothespin. Let s get to know these birds together with the kids!

Besides those pieces of artwork, there are more to explore the paths crisscrossing Guandu Plain. The park launches three activities, including Night Visit to Guandu Plain, 10 Ways to Explore Guandu as Inhabitants Do, and A Short Trip for Family-About the Stories of Guandu, for participants to learn about ecology, history and industrial development of this place. This series of activities serve as the bridge between the past and present time in the way that shows us how and why things have changed in Guandu Plain.

Visit Guandu Plain after sunset to find out what different the paddies look like at night. We hope the participants could learn to appreciate the contrasting beauty of the plain in different times of the day. One participant wrote, Feel the cool breeze in November! Go on foot or by cycling, it can be fun. For a few minutes we even turned off flashlights, just to reduce light pollution and improve our perception. Gazing into the city lights across the plain in the deep darkness is like merging into the Room of Requirement in Harry Potter movies. Who would think there is such a place as Guandu? Even now, I still find the experience exciting!

A Short Trip for Family –About the Stories of Guandu
This is a short trip about industrial development in Guandu. We can learn about how agricultural activities, duck breeding culture and fisheries have impacted on -
the place names and lifestyle. These may include crispy puffed rice treats, rice drying in the sun practice, rammedearth houses, and sculptured-rice for offering, etc. Rice is in everything you see and live by. One student said, This activity taught me about Guandu s industrial development. I heard the stories about the Second Mazu. Now I know why I must buy a salted duck egg on every visit to Guandu Temple. This is a well-designed activity. Now I can say that I really know something about this place. Many thanks to you for the great activity!

From Mud to Poop
Chungho led the participants to experience the process of making mud balls. They practiced stepping on the raw soil to soften it, and then used processed clay to make the little balls. Kids were excited playing with clay and tried their best to make the balls round and smooth. In the end those mud balls were put to the participants preferred locations and became part of the artwork. The kids also imagined themselves as earthworms wandering around the earth. 1
