River is established to protect the habitat of wild birds. Covering merely 57 hectares, the Guandu Nature Park possesses nearly a thousand species of animals and plants, as well as a diversity of ecological environment, which is

2006

also an important habitat for the migration of migratory birds at the rim of the East Asia continent. The Guandu International Nature Art Festival was launched in 2006, and it was the first large-scale nature art event held in a nature park focusing on preservation in Taiwan. The Art Festival primarily uses natural elements as the media materials for art creation and connects the relations between humans, nature, and art to improving the recognition of people toward

nature and environment, allowing people to further experience the joy of involving 2019

in nature.

From 2016 to 2018, the Nature Art Festival focused on the theme of “Listening, Connection and Symbiosis.” After three years of experiments, the Art Festival took up the theme "It’s about time" to tell people it is the time to take action. This year, apart from inviting seven groups of foreign and domestic artists to create their artworks based on the data accumulated from the continual investigations of the Guandu Nature Park over the years, the International Nature Art Festival rolled (

out an international forum that combined the cross-field cooperation and local integration.

We appreciate the long-term support from our partners, including the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government, Taipei City Animal Protection Office, Asia Pacific Hotel, Soundscape Association of Taiwan, Bamboo Curtain Studio, Taipei National University of the Arts, GuanDu Junior High School, and HSBC Bank (Taiwan) Company Limited, to join integrate the forces of nature, art, and environmental education and enlightening more people to get close to nature, and further taking actions to protect the environment. Let's co-exist with nature.

IT'S ABOUT TIME

About the Festival

2006

2016

Guandu Natural Park has hosted the Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival since 2006. It was the first time for Taiwan to have such a large-scale nature art event held in a nature park with a conservation mission. This artistic action is rooted in the Guandu wetland, which is deeply ecological and rich in estuary culture, creating a space for dialogue between people, art and nature. It also paints a blueprint for the symbiosis of estuary culture, wetland conservation and environmental art. In 2016, it was renamed Guandu International Nature Art Festival. With 10 years of accumulated experience and memory, the festival has further implemented and deepened our understanding and care for the locality.

This artistic action has been expanded into a plan with multiple aspects. In order to deepen the participatory experience to acknowledge the core value of this project, both the artist-in-residence and volunteer programs are changed to involve more explorations of local stories. We actively explore the relationship between human and nature. The art festival also began to establish partnerships such as Soundscape Association of Taiwan and Bamboo Curtain Studio, developing nature art education programs that combines environmental education and art creation elements. We hope that everyone who participate in the art festival can be more proactive in rebuilding their relationship with the environment, inspired by nature, and jointly find a direction for the sustainability in the future.

IT'S ABOUT TIME

Guandu Natural Park has experienced severe damage of wetland creature habitat due to the industrial development. In order to retain the last

piece of pure wetland in Taipei City, the Wild Bird Society of Taipei initiated a social movement, and after a long period of efforts, the Guandu Plain has been preserved as a wetland, and the management office was established in 2001 to operate Guandu Natural Park. The management aims to provide a good habitat for the protists and migratory birds. In 2005, due to the avian influenza outbreak, the park was severely affected, and the number of visitors decreased significantly. To get rid of the influence of avian flu, Guandu Natural Park Management Office initiated the activity of combining nature and installation art in 2006. We held the Guandu International Outdoor Sculpture Festival for the first time, opening up an artistic

approach to experience nature. After ten years, the art festival was transformed in the 11th year, and the name was changed to Guandu International Nature Art Festival. After the experimental phase of 2016 to 2018 with "listening, connection, symbiosis" as the curatorial main axis, this year the Guandu International Nature Art

2001 2005

Festival takes the theme of “It’s About Time” and regards the Park as a stage. The performance here consists of not only Guandu's ecosystem, but

2006

also the various environmental realities linked to the world. We hope that through the artistic perspective, we can evoke people's attention, dialogue and reflection, and we will work together to change and act, so that we can sustain, and find a stable pace in the turbulent times.

A total of seven (groups of) artists have been invited to create this year. This year's art festival includes seven major research topics to connect artists with local participants from various backgrounds, such as eco-researchers, volunteers, and local residents, finding out how a group of people behind the studies show concern for the land, and simultaneously showcases a lifestyle. The "Rice Planting and River Cleanup Project" is a part of the art education activity “Live long and prosper” of Guandu Junior High School students led by two Taiwanese artists, Fang-Yi Yang and Yu-Hong Peng. With such a project, students are led to understand the relationship between rivers and life. Through actual street and river cleaning operations and rice planting, students could find out how to contribute to the land in daily life. The research topic "The Relationship between human and soil: Discussion on the Farmers in Guandu Plain" is based on the work of a local cultural and historical organization - Beitou Storyteller, in conjunction with Taiwanese artist Chiung-Ju Chang. Researchers conducted interviews with farmers on the Guandu Plain to understand the current farming status and how they withstand the development pressure in various places. "Frog Survey" is a collaboration between the "Digital storytelling course" of the Graduate Institute of Arts and Humanities Education at Taipei National University of the Arts and the Guandu Nature Park Volunteer Team - Frog Survey Team. Taking environmental sustainability and art participation as the development themes, they used the frog survey as a filed to describe the colorful frog life with infographics and animated images. "History of Guandu Natural Park" is a process in which the Taiwanese artist Bo-Sen Liao deeply understood the history of Guandu Plains and Guandu Natural

representation

Park through field study and represented this process through archaeology and excavation. The "Transect Bird Survey" is the study of a Taiwanese artist Kuan-Ling Huang, who actually participated in the bird survey work, interacted directly with the researchers, and used the research materials that reflect the bird composition and the habitat environmental conditions with the assistance

Tsuneo Sekiguchi Anusorn Tunyapalit

of the researchers to tell the story of bird survival crisis. "Sound Monitoring" is an extension from the soundscape project in the past three years. This year, it collaborated with Japanese artist Tsuneo Sekiguchi to provide the public with another interface to understand the characteristics of Guandu soundscape, and to let people listen to the sound of nature with heart. In "Brackish Water Reintroduction Project" participated by Thai artist Anusorn Tunyapalit, the artist followed the researchers to do benthic ecology study, including sampling and specimen processing, and turned this experience into creation. This year's Guandu International Nature Art Festival adopts a ribbon-like participation mechanism. We integrate artists into the daily life of Guandu Natural Park, and use the qualities of art creation to propose different perception and perspectives for people facing the environment. Through the artists’ creation, the story of Guandu will be shared, conveying the value of habitat and biodiversity, and at the same time triggering the reader ’s awareness of ecological conservation, leading all living beings to keep close to nature with heart.

Live long and prosper aims to find out how to contribute to the nature in daily life via rivers and paddy wetlands. With such a plan, we collaborated with the organizations around the Tamsui River basin to experience and understand that that water resources are not endless. If we do not cherish them, we will eventually suffer from water shortage. There were a total of 5 lessons in our course series. Each lesson leads 40 Guandu Junior High School students to participate in a 4-hour practical experience. In the 5th lesson, we arranged a final presentation to embody the results of 5 4

the students’ deep thinking. The content of the course was focused on the water, explaining the characteristics of water and rivers, as well as the relationship between cities and river basins. We also arranged actual cleaning activities to solve the current garbage problem around Tamsui River. Through the creation of artists, we intend to convey the flow and interaction with the waters, and to educate students to initiate reducing garbage and extend the good deeds to schools, families and communities. Through the collaboration with this educational project, the artists collected students' feelings about life and the wastes of daily life, combined these thoughts with the wastes and created artworks to be displayed in a public space. Through the concept of "mass," the artists intended to inspire feelings and actions.

By Szu-Ting Hsu Aldo Leopold writes in the chapter about Land Ethics in his work “A Sand County Almanac, stating: "The norms of land ethics expand the scope of groups to included soil, water, animals and plants, which can be collectively called land. The ecological interpretation of history has shown that humans are merely a member of the biota." Human participation in land succession tells countless development stories through history. The history

Description

makes us understand that no matter how much humans ask of the land, the land will eventually find a balance, whether it is through a severe disaster or slow landscape change. The present decision of humans will influence their future state of existence on the land. Aldo Leopold Taking farmers as an example to discuss the relationship between people and land, in the past, Chinese society generally believed that farmers needed to "look at the sky, measure the land, and understand everything" in order to grow rich crops. Does this mindset still exist? What has changed in the relationship between people and land? Judging from the Guandu Plain, the rice field here has been cultivated for more than two hundred years, and it used to be an experimental farmland for the cultivation of japonica during the Japanese colonial period. Back in the day, the Plain was a very important rice cultivation area in Taiwan, as well as a good habitat for a large number of living creatures, such as migratory birds, aquatic insects, and suburban hill mammals. Over time, the environmental condition and economic structure changed. The Guandu Plain experienced pressures such as seawater intrusion, waste farmland, and waste irrigation ditch. Its agricultural value has been not as good as before. Farmers are gradually reluctant to use a land as pure farmland. Such large areas of farmland and wasteland have been under development pressure everywhere. How should humans reach harmony with other members in the biota? To include more diverse types of water habitats, Guandu Natural Park has been continuously building a paddy field wetland environment in the "sustainable area" in the park, and has taken the fallow period in the second stage of rice cultivation to introduce water to the field for continuous storage, carrying out wet soil regulation to increase wetland yield and provide for water birds. The next step in the prospect of Guandu Nature Park is to invite neighboring farmlands to a partnership. Through continuous communication, thinking, and learning, we intend to find the best sustainable state of the Guandu Plain and let people coexist with the land. During the reconnaissance of the farmland on the Guandu Plain and interviews with local farmers, the Beitou Storyteller presented the report with various appearances of the Guandu Plain, reflecting the ambition carried by these rice fields. Artists also used ceramics to tell these collected stories, and will try to collect different clays from Guandu and create pottery.

IT'S ABOUT TIME

As we all know, Guandu Natural Park and Guandu Plain are important habitats for migratory birds in East Asia. It is hard to imagine that in such an urbanized city of Taipei, there is still a vast agricultural land

and wetland reserved for natural ecology. However, it was not until I participated in a creation last year that I heard about the situation from the employees of the park: “The trees here are not naturally grown. They were all planted nearly 20 years ago,” “At the time of site preparation, a

Description

lot of waste was dug,” which surprised me a lot. As a newcomer, I was full of imagination and curiosity. If we carefully look for some information about that time, an important reason for the establishment of the park was actually the dumping of waste soil on the Guandu Plain 20 years ago, which destroyed bird habitats and triggered the environmental protection movement initiated by bird lovers.

Now, thanks to the hard work of everyone, in such a green and lush environment, the destruction back in the day is no longer seen. To a certain extent, we seem to think that the establishment of a nature reserve is equivalent to protecting the most important habitat of Northern Taipei. However, this is not the case. Over the past 20 years, land has become the most competitive commodity. The Guandu Plain is no exception, and an unprecedented combination with the natural environment has appeared in the agriculture on the plain. In fact, the habitat of birds and creatures has gradually decreased, although terrifying waste soil and garbage can no longer be seen now.

In addition to archaeological trial excavation, this creation also involves collection. Before the creation began, there happened to be a sewer project at the large lawn of Guandu Nature Park, so artists were informed to go, record and collect. The artists referred to the area collection as the collection area A, and the archaeological trial excavation as the area B. The digging depth of the collection area A was nearly two meters deep, and from the section excavated at that time, it could be seen that there were many construction wastes and many household wastes, but because the earthwork excavated from above was collected directly, the depth of the collection could not be identified. Many large wastes were collected at the time, such as tires, sleepers, and household waste. The depth of the archaeological trial in Area B was about 40 cm, surrounded by excavated rocks and bricks. 62

Collected excavations from Area A

Collected excavations from Area B

From this project, it can be observed that Guandu Natural Park does have problems of construction waste and garbage. Therefore, this project can be regarded as an reflection of history. From another perspective, the archaeological site is a field that calls for time, letting us feel the reappearance of history. From an aesthetic point of view, when our body enters another field, our feelings are naturally different. The process from the field to underground and from the visible to the invisible, is perhaps the aesthetic contribution of this work.

The primary focus of both environmental art and landscape art is the natural environment. How to respond to the natural environment is undoubtedly one important attribute of such works. Such matter should be approached no matter in terms of material, shape or form. But, after all, art is artificial. With this perspective, perhaps architecture can be seen as a part of environmental art, and buildings by indigenous peoples or ancestors using traditional construction methods can be regarded as the precursors of landscape art or environmental art. The scaffolding created in this project is inspired by the Tao tribe’s underground house, and the windward side is deliberately lowered to respond to the blow of the northeast monsoon.

This artwork is meant to “represents” the process of archaeology and excavation. We know that archaeology is basically to examine the material culture and environment for analysis and to use to the data to reconstruct a life appearance. In addition, representation has always been a very important way to transmission aesthetics and meaning. Michel Foucault in his <Words and Things> also mentioned the concept that each historical stage has a set of rules of knowledge structure. From an aesthetic point, it's (

)

same as create artwork. I hope that through this "alternative" archaeology and excavation in the Guandu Nature Park, art will become a concrete way to more deeply intervene in (the visible and invisible) space and time.

In 2015, the Wild Bird Society of Taipei Guandu Natural Park Management Office and the Hydraulic Engineering Office, Public Works Department, Taipei City Government collaborated to build a new vertical rising sluice gate equipment at the Baxian No. 4 valve, which could then be opened periodically to allow brackish water outside the dike to enter at high tide to allow. This opening of the dike would allow for exchange of water and nutrients, and the creation of a biological corridor which would enrich the species diversity of benthic organisms and provide food sources to attract more birds to the Park.

The way to improve the world’s soundscape is very simple - learn to listen. Nowadays, listening seems to be a forgotten habit. We must open our ears and be more sensitive to the wonderful world of sound around us. When we develop a sense of observation, we can further develop largescale socially meaningful projects and influence others with our own experience. — 1 Description

• 放大聽覺 Soundscape was proposed by Canadian composer Murray Schafer in the early 1970s. Schafer carried out a series of studies with the World Soundscape Project as the core. Soundscape, as the name implies, is the scenery of sound, which means the appearance of all collective sounds. In the soundscape project in the past three years, we have used recordings to monitor the changes in the wetland’s soundscape, and have guided the public to use their senses to reconnect humans and the natural environment. We hope that through the use soundscapes, we can promote the aesthetics of natural listening and find tranquility in the environment. We look forward to making natural soundscape the main theme and inspiring

the motivation for a friendly environment. The three-year workshop allowed everyone to learn how to collect sounds, listen to various elements in the soundscape, and make an online sound map out of each collector's sound file (Figure 1). The soundscape map is a platform to evoke everyone's awareness of preserving soundscapes and of listening to various sounds. The association currently uses Google Maps to publicly display the sound clips collected in various places. We hope that we took the initiative and encouraged more people to work together to preserve soundscapes. In the future, we also hope that everyone can

Figure 2 : Artists' creative painting of soundscape

Sound artist Wu Can-Zheng once said, "Sound has a hidden flow power, which inspires and constitutes space and events, and sound is also a basic part of personal mentality and emotion, as well as the world's thinking and consciousness." Today's soundscape will become the future’s history, and will affect the soundscape in the future environment. In addition to continuously interpreting the soundscape features and changes in the environment with scientific software, this year, through the artists’ creation, the Guandu Natural Park wetland soundscape was interpreted in the form of art. The artists also shared their understanding and imagination of the Guandu Natural Park soundscape, so as to help the public understand the current wetland soundscape characteristics and issues. During the field survey arranged by Guandu Natural Park, the Secretary General of Soundscape Association of Taiwan, Chia-yun Lee, led the artists to redraw their impression of Guandu Wetland with sound. Artists walked through Guandu Natural Park with sound-collecting equipment, opened their ears to listen to the sound story of wetlands rich in water, land and plants, and creatively painted this sound journey (Figure 2). Make people living in a noisy world aware of the soundscape in life and the environment, and further think about which sounds need to be retained. Think about how we could make these sounds flourish, retain the main features of the environment, and in turn beautify these soundscapes, integrate soundscape design into the future environmental management and construction, and make the environment soundscape better.

Guandu Nature Park was founded on the foundations of: protecting the Guandu wetlands and providing opportunities for education, research and recreation. The key to protecting and conserving the Guandu wetlands is to first gain understanding about the biodiversity of this wetland through various monitoring processes, and the main one was to use birds as the key indicator species for changes in the environment. Since 1998 till

IT'S ABOUT TIME

Greater Painted-snipes (Rostratula benghalensis ) are classified as Category II protected species. They are one of the few birds in Taiwan that

)

are polygamous, which means the female mates with multiple males and the males are the ones responsible for hatching eggs and brooding. Thus, the colorings of the males tend to be relatively plain and discreet, and the female is the more colorful one. Greater Painted-snipes are commonly found in rice paddy fields and are heavily impacted by the management of the land (land preparation, pesticides, fertilizers, etc.). This makes the Greater Painted-snipe an important indicator species in the rice paddy field environment. The Sustainable Area of the Park is where the Greater Painted- snipes are most commonly seen and recorded. Although, the Park still use the conventional agricultural method, but only a small amount

II

of pesticides and fertilizers are used to ensure a suitable environment suitable for the Greater Painted-snipe is available.

Birds of the Myna family are quite common in Taiwan but most of the ones seen are invasive species, like the Javan Myna (Acridotheres

javanicus ), Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis ), Asian Glossy Starling (Aplonis panayensis ) and Black-collared Starling (Gracupica nigricollis ). The

2

Crested Myna (Acridotheres cristatellus) are endemic subspecies and a Category II protected species. The numbers of Crested Mynas have gradually declined over the past years due to competition with the non-native Myna species. The Crested Myna is dark black in its overall appearance with a crest on the forehead, ivory colored bill and a large white patch on the wings. Crested Mynas have a breeding population in Guandu and although they can be commonly observed but they do not appear in large numbers and generally not in mixed flocks with other non-native Mynas species.

Green-winged Teal (Anas crecca ) and Eastern Spot-billed Duck (Anas zonorhyncha ) are the Park’s most common and numerous waterfowl (Figure 1). Green-winged Teal are winter migrants that began to arrive starting in September, and the best time to observe them are between October to

Another important figure in the wetland landscape are shorebirds, which in comparison to the waterfowl are less colorful and tricky to identify (

for many beginners. The most common shorebirds seen at the Park are Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus ), Common Greenshank (Tringa

2003

nebularia ) and Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola ; Figure 3). Black-winged Stilts are winter migrants, but since 2003 there have been records of a 2

10

few pairs breeding at the Park in the summer this was the first documented case of Black-winged Stilts breeding in northern Taiwan. Since then, 1

2

200

every year there would be a few pairs remaining to breed on the islands of the Core Reserve Area. Breeding on the islands faces threats posed by snakes, stray dogs and the possibility of nests being inundated by typhoons or heavy rainfall. Park management installed floating platforms which can be seen in Ponds 2 and 10, as they provide an ideal alternative nesting spot for the Black-winged Stilts away from snakes and stray dogs, and are unaffected by changes in water level. Common Greenshank (Tringa nebularia ) and Wood Sandpiper (Tringa glareola ) are both winter migrants with relatively stable numbers, making them easy to observe at the Park. Common Greenshanks have high site fidelity and are commonly seen in Freshwater 1 and 2 in the Core Reserve Area. Wood Sandpipers on the other hand prefer more inland areas, and are mostly transit and while travelling through the Park they can show up in large numbers in the Paddy Field Area.

In the summer months, most of the waterbirds have returned north and remaining species commonly seen are Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis

aethiopicus ) and members from the Ardeidae Family. The Yellow Bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis ) is generally a summer migrant, which is secretive and not easy to observe as they hide in between the reeds near the water. Generally when seen, they are in flight and during the peak of the breeding season it’s easy to see them flying back and forth with nesting materials or food. When the Park was just founded, the area of tall emergent marsh was scarce in the Core Reserve Area and they were not very commonly seen, but in recent years, as the area of all emergent marsh have increased making it easier to observe the Yellow Bitterns.

Barn Swallows (Hirundo rustica ) mainly build their nests under people’s roofs but they rely on marshes or grasslands that provide an abundant

1

Black-collared Starling (Gracupica nigricollis ) have been selected as they have a negative impact on the bird population at the Park.

In 1984, the Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus ) escaped from a zoo in northern Taiwan and then six individuals were first spotted in Guandu. 2018

The number of Sacred Ibis spread quickly since then and now there are at least ten thousand individuals in Taiwan. The Sacred Ibis is listed as one of the top hundred invasive species by the European Union, as they are highly competitive as there is a large overlap in the foraging and habitat with those of native egrets and herons. At the Park, there has been documented incidences where Sacred Ibis have been seen to prey on the eggs and young birds of the egrets and herons. In recent years, the Forestry Bureau has been actively removing Sacred Ibis with nets, removing eggs, 9

and destroying bird nests, and more recently in 2018 the Bureau has begun to use air guns in hopes to reduce their population size and restore the balance.

10 Javan Myna (Acridotheres javanicus ) and Black-collared Starling (Gracupica nigricollis ) are both invasive species of Mynas that have escaped into the wild as a result of human introduction. They compete with the native species, Crested Mynas, for habitat and food. The Javan Myna was originally imported to Taiwan as an ornamental bird, and were introduced to the wild because of escapees, abandonment and mercy releases. The Javan Myna proved to have a strong adaptability and successfully uses man-made structures such as the holes in the poles of road signs or the drain hole in cement walls to nest. Currently there is a large and stable population in the low altitude areas all over Taiwan, and they account for nearly 90% of the Myna population at the Park. The situation is similar with the Black-collared Starlings, but the rate of their spread has not been as fast as that of Javan Myna in the Guandu area, because the Guandu Plains still remains as largely open agricultural fields and they prefer environments that are more developed such as those seen at Shizi and Luzhou, where flocks of more than ten are often seen.

Elapsed Monument

Material

Bamboo, rope, Nature Material, Waste Material

The overall shape of the artwork is based on the obelisk, meant to commemorate the elapsed, forgotten, and the once existing. The artwork used the materials collected in the park. This material are arranged and stacked in according to their relative speed of being weathered by the natural environment. The speed of material disintegration also corresponds to the number of the birds and the degree of their being endangered. The more easily the materials disintegration, the more birds may be endangered. The artworks will disintegrate, ruin in and disappear from top to bottom over time. In the end, those materials will return to nature. The artist attempts to convert bird survey data into a direct visually feeling, in an attempt to bring out “It's About Time.

Artists has long been concerned about nature-related environmental issues and activities. He is creation techniques often highlight the uniqueness characteristics and texture of the material itself. He also often adds organic materials to his artworks to make them feel more alive. Besides, in his artworks, we can find out that two forces of "nature" and "human beings" compete against each other, resulting in various collisions, interactions, similarities and contradictions. The two forces seem to be distinct but also ambiguous and this became a paradoxical dilemma. Thus, his artwork seems to be simple but in fact there is some philosophical thinking and questioning hidden in it. 108

Froggy was Guandu Natural Park. Later, as the instructors went all over Taiwan to conduct night-time observation, they realized more about the ecological environment and frog species differences, and they came to appreciate that Taiwan is such an ecologically rich island. islands. In 2008, 97

the Guandu Team Froggy officially joined the Taiwan Amphibian Conservation Volunteer, who was trained by the Amphibious Lab of Dong Hwa

University, which has lasted for 11 years to this day. We have successively set up survey sample areas in the Greater Taipei area and Sanxing, Yilan. The locations include: Guandu Natural Park, Tucheng Qingyun Road, Tucheng Ammunition Depot, Xindian Qingtan Village, Wenshan District Cao Nan, Taipei National University of the Arts Campus, Sanxing Jiuchiong Lake, Sanxing Qingsui geothermal. We also assisted the Shuangxi

Elementary School in New Taipei City to set up a team to conduct a one-year survey of Dingzilan Creek frogs. 7 In January 2015, we reached a collaboration agreement with the Taipei National University of the Arts (hereinafter referred to as the TNUA) for frog studies. After surveying the TNUA campus, 7 survey samples were selected at locations with permanent or temporary waters, including TNUA Cafe, the back of the library, the back of the art gallery, the student cafeteria, the Afu Thatched Cottage, and the Bolina Restaurant. The study records the frog species, habitats and number, and clarifies the status of frog resources in different environments. The frog study on the campus of TNUA has been continuing to this day.

The 2015 five-month (January, May, July, September, and December) quarterly survey records show that there are nine amphibians, accounting for about 1/4 of the frog species on the main island of Taiwan. However, some species are seasonal. Species that are active only in autumn and winter would not appear in these five records. Lu Guang-Yang, an emeritus professor in the Department of Life Sciences of National Taiwan Normal University, speculated that frogs that are active on the campus of TNUA should be more than these nine types. Therefore, in 2016, Guandu Nature Park changed to a monthly survey record system. A total of 13 species have been recorded, including Ornate Narrow-mouthed Frog, White-lipped Treefrog, Eiffinger's treefrog, LaTouche's Frog, Long-legged frog, bull frog, Meintein tree frog, Gunther's frog, spot-legged tree frog, spectacled toad, olive frog, Taipei tree frog, and rice field frog. Table 1 with the statistics from 2016 to 2018 indicates that the ditch in the parking lot behind the library and surrounding spots are ecological hot spots for frogs. 118

IT'S ABOUT TIME

Design is a way to see the society, and it is about how people imagine, transform, and in turn create a better society. The 2019 Guandu International Natural Art Festival collaborated with the Research in Digital Storytelling course of TNUA Humanities Education Institute, with environmental sustainability and artistic participation as the themes, and the TNUA frog study as the local field story, taking the Team Froggy of Guandu Natural Park as an object and deeply exploring the story and digital narrative methods of ecological sustainability. The course was conducted with the following five steps:

2016-2018 1. Field exploration: This course invited Mr. Li Cheng-En to explain and carry out the frog survey on the campus of TNUA, letting students experience the rich appearance and ecological environment of frogs on campus. The students then searched for information in small groups to further discuss the characteristics and habits of frogs, as well as the problems facing the local ecology. In particular, they referred to the Frog Survey Results of Taipei National University of the Arts 2016-2018 by the Team Froggy. 2. Insights and design focuses: The students found that TNUA has a very rich population of frogs, which is faced with various problems. The habitat fragmentation and the invasion of exotic species are the biggest survival crisis of TNUA frogs. For example, the nursery room of the long-legged frogs was originally in the ditch behind the library, but their climbing path was affected by the removal of the vine plants. The exotic spot-legged tree frogs also have great impact on the survival of local frogs. From this, we should think about: frogs are everywhere at the TNUA, but they are often overlooked by students. If TNUA were a school with frogs as its main character, what would it look like? Would we change the perception of campus space structure? 3. The story outline: Students anthropomorphize frogs into students of TNUA, imagining that the frogs’ general lifestyle school, so that when watching the works, the viewers could project their own feelings and sympathize with frogs. 4. Conceptual sketch: The frogs’ true appearances are outlined and colored in paintings, so that the viewers can identify different frogs. The paintings are supplemented with textual explanations, so that the viewers can get a preliminary understanding of the various frogs. There were eight groups, with nineteen paintings including: TNUA Long Spot Battle, Broken Home, Mortal Battle in the Lotus Pond, Quack Quack Frog Alumni Association, Frog Study Repairing Broken Habitat, Where is the Frogemon?, The Necessity of Long-Legged Frogs, Frog, Wow! 5. Audience tests and feedback: Team Froggy believes that the content of these infographics is often the focus of tour guiding commentary. The ecological concept can bring the guide commentary more amiable to the public through a humorous way. The citizen scientific work of the frog study is passed on through the combination with art, achieving greater value. We have also received suggestions for value-added use. For instance, the infographics can be printed as postcards, or used as auxiliary teaching materials in the frog study tour guiding. Just because something is intangible does not mean it does not exist. The frogs on earth have many unknown secrets that need to be known to the public through the media. Team Froggy utilized physical actions and written records, and this exhibition used infographics to enable the public to "read" the images. Therefore, empathy was very important while creating. From observing and imagining the life of frogs and possible culture, to transforming the concept into a plot connecting to the lives of the public, the public will have a common sense, we used our five senses to track down the frogs, starting from the Lotus Pond near TNUA Cafe, to the ditch behind the library, and then to the pond next to the Bolina Restaurant. What environment do the frogs need? What are the characteristics of different frogs? How do we create a better frog living space? In fact, frogs and people are all living and studying at TNUA. We tried to think empathically. Through information images and dynamic images, we presented tales, sense and sensibilities of frogs in an anthropomorphic way, hopefully communicating the concept of symbiosis clearly and aesthetically.

Forum Introduction

By Szu-Ting Hsu

Guandu Natural Park is a wetland eco-conservation site and an important promoter of the environmental education in Taiwan. If we regarded Guandu Natural Park as a stage, the performance here would be Guandu's ecosystem, as well as a variety of environmental realities interlinked with the world. With our 13-year experience in organizing the nature (installation) art festival and 8-year experience in the operation of the Taiwan’s Project WET Curriculum Network, we have connected many creators in the field of arts with eco-conservation promoters to promote the concept of natural conservation. During the promotion, we found that what we need is the energy of these different fields, such as science, art, culture, and education, colliding and having conversations in the Guandu Natural Park, as well as providing a diverse perspective for natural conservation and collaboratively considering how to encourage the public to join the environmental action. This forum combines the Annual Meeting of Taiwan’s Project WET Network for Partners and the Guandu International Nature Art Festival to organize a cross-disciplinary forum linking conservation researchers, environmental educators, and artistic creative professionals. The forum includes three topics: cross-domain experience sharing and role positioning; how to promote and call on the public participation in environmental actions through interpretation and communication tools; how to evaluate and analyze the impact of action plans on society. In the process, we invite experts and practical professionals to give keynotes and case sharing, and to discuss the above three topics daily. We would like to invite everyone to cross the boundaries together in the real life field of Guandu during 2019.11.01-11.03, tackling and finding the future to solve environmental problems through cross-disciplinary cooperation.

Art Volunteers

Guandu Natural Park has been hosting the Guandu International Nature Art Festival since 2006. The festival has entered its 14th year. Over these past years, through the input of many outstanding artists and enthusiastic art volunteers who exerted their creativity and ingenuity to integrate various natural media with the care for the earth, the festival has created a space for dialogue between people, art and nature, and the creative process takes care not only of nature, but also of the heart of each participant.

As the relationship between human and nature has become seriously unbalanced, we hear the cracking and whimpering of the earth, and feel the urgency for the humanity to change. In 2019, we continue to re-examine and reflect on the relationship between human and nature through the eyes of artists. Through the combination of nature and art, we will convey the value of natural habitat and biodiversity, and simultaneously trigger the readers’ ecological awareness, lead all living beings to recover the connection with nature. To diversify participation channels, this year's Art Volunteer Program recruits in various ways (corporate volunteers and one-day volunteers). We expect more people to feel this land with their own hands, wander through nature along with artists, weave dreams with the purest heart, and write stories about meeting nature again.
