GDCTA 2020 Election Candidate Profiles

The nominees for Officers are: Caren Caverly – President: I have served on the GDCTA Board for the

past 12 years and as President for the last 9 years. I am also the Chairperson for GDCTA Insurance, Annual Awards Gala and the Year End Awards. While on the board at GDCTA, I proposed and managed the 2009-2019 Schooling Shows at Wills Park and at the Georgia International Horse Park. I also organized the Gil Merrick Seminar along with June Brewer.

I have been riding for over 55 years with the last 14 years focused on dressage. I currently own 1 horse, Solant (retired). I have also served as Treasurer for the Georgia Arabian Association for 4 years.

My professional experience includes working as Manager and Buyer for Tack Tavern for 8 ½ years, followed by 15 years in the car business. I was the Assistant Manager at Dover Saddlery for over 8 years. I am currently doing Horse Show Management and going for my “r” TD license.

On-going goals for the GDCTA include getting the Region 3 Championships back to Conyers and making them the most fun and successful championships. We also hope to continue the growing success of the Awards Gala.

As President, I would like to see GDCTA host more educational seminars and junior activities. My personal goal is to make GDCTA the best GMO in the country – the one other GMO’s look to as the example of how things are done!

Rebecca Bowman – VP for CT: Rebecca Bowman is a horse trainer

from Cartersville, Georgia. She has been riding horse for over 40 years. She has ridden and trained mustangs, thoroughbreds, warmbloods, quarter horses to name a few. Rebecca has a strong emphasis on correct, forward riding, and incorporates some dressage into each horse she trains. Over the years she has competed in polo, polocrosse, race riding, dressage, pony club, jumpers and eventing and the Extreme Mustang Makeover. Rebecca manages and teaches at North Atlanta Equestrian, a 178 acre facility in Cartersville, Georgia.

Erin McCloud – VP for Dressage: Georgia native Erin Lea McCloud has been riding horses since she was just 10 years old. She runs a training facility in Marietta intended to share her knowledge of and passion for dressage.

Erin is a USDF Bronze and Silver medalist, as well as a graduate of the “L” Program with distinction. She has been on the board since January of 2017. She is devoted to the continuing her own education and will be focused on providing the same opportunities to the members of GDCTA.

Joanne Morse – Recording Secretary: Joanne is both an eventer

and dressage rider who trains out of her family-owned farm in Villa Rica, Georgia. She has served on the board for several years and for the past two years has been the Recording Secretary. This past year, she became the Chair of Communication Committee and therefore is more involved in the communication side of GDCTA, helping with the monthly newsletter and the annual yearbook that is published each summer. Joanne’s goal for the remainder of 2019 and 2020 is to help increase member involvement in using GDCTA as a platform to share their experiences in the equestrian world. She is also working on ideas to increase engagement on the eventing side of GDCTA’s membership.

Peter West – Treasurer: Peter is the founder and Managing Partner of Radix Consulting Inc., a full service firm providing business consulting services with its office located in Atlanta Georgia.

Previous and for over 25 years, Peter was President and CEO of Canuck Industries Inc., a diverse private corporation consisting of an airfreight service division and three manufacturing and distribution facilities of aluminium products for home construction in the United States and Canada.

A University of British Columbia grad with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, Peter earned his Chartered Accountant (CPA) designation with a major CPA firm in Vancouver B.C. He left public practice and joined ITT Rayonier where he started in their tax division, moved to Business Planning and in 1977 transferred to Atlanta Georgia where he became their Director of Southeast Operations. While with ITT he undertook the EMBA program at the Wharton School of Business at The University of Pennsylvania. After declining a Division Vice President position and transfer to New York, he moved forward and formed Canuck Industries Inc. Peter is married to Teresa and has two children. Son Chris is married with two children; and daughter Karen has been an avid dressage rider and competitor for a number of years.

Peri Lambros – Corresponding Secretary: An avid eventer turned dressage enthusiast, Peri has served on the GDCTA board for several years. She continues to want to help grow the membership in all aspects and support this GMO. For the 2020 calendar year, Peri has signed up to help with Kudzu Klinics and is currently searching for facilities and instructors. She resides on a small horse farm with her husband, 2 horses, 2 dogs and 3 cats.

The nominees for Board Members are: Carol Tresan: Carol grew up with all kinds of animals. Her mother ran a riding

stable, and together they trained and campaigned Welsh ponies and cobs in the breed ring, competing in English, Western, Carriage diving and Trail classes. Their goal was always the Versatility award, which demonstrated their ability to master several disciplines. They also competed their ponies in Combined Training and Combined Driving. Carol was active in her local Pony Club. When Carol outgrew the ponies, she got an OTTB named Rapid Falls and continued up through the levels of Eventing.

Carol moved to Atlanta to be the Event Director of the Foxhall Cup CCI***, the National Championship of Eventing, and the final selection site for the Olympic team. She married Greg in 2002 and together they operate Animal Casting Atlanta, the number one provider of animals for movies and television in the southeast. Carol has over 30 years experience training animals ranging from a tiny hamster to a 1,500 pound Clydesdale. She owns Flying Colors Farm, breeding and training horses from miniatures through her gentle giant draft horses. She competes with her Freisian Sport Horses in dressage and Eventing, and has qualified for the AECs the past 2 years!

Carol is most proud of her daughter Devon, who competes in Eventing with her as well as Pony Club rallies! Carol is currently the secretary of the Milton Pony Club and volunteers for the GDCTA as well as local events including Chatt Hills and Poplar Place.

Jennifer Scherrens: I grew up riding in the Alpharetta area, and have been an competitor with USEA for over 20 years. I currently own River Mist Equestrian, LLC a board & training facility in Milton.

With a background primarily in Eventing I would love to bring more clinics focused on both educating the Eventing riders both in the tack and out. Bring on the Kudzu clinics! Any recommendations on clinicians are always an email away! I’m big on quick communication and follow through.

Heather Ryfa: I grew up riding and showing Tennessee walking horses; my parents

had a very small breeding operation. In high school I trained and showed their main stallion and started our colts under saddle. At UGA I competed with the equestrian team in stock seat. After law school I briefly showed spotted saddle and walking horses again, then took a seven year break to have kids. I decided to return to horses and learn to jump five years ago, which had been something I always wanted to do. That led to foxhunting at Bear Creek, the local hunter shows, then eventing. I just started participating in GDCTA the last couple of years. I try to volunteer at Chattahoochee Hills shows whenever possible. I attended the August 2018 GDCTA board meeting, and while there I agreed to join the GDCTA 2019 Awards Gala planning committee.

In addition to many years at many horse shows, I think some of my work skills might be useful to the group. I was a tax lawyer for several years, so I am good with spreadsheets, budgeting, and organizing. Currently I teach legal writing full time, which is a much more flexible schedule than practicing law. I love horses, competing, and supporting my horse community, so I look forward to serving GDCTA in whatever capacity in which I am needed!

Liz Molloy: Liz Molloy, aka “Ms. Liz”, has owned and operated Taramia since 1998.

Taramia riders participate Dressage, Combined Training and Eventing and Pony Club Certifications & Rallies. Her students have won numerous GDCTA Year End Awards & Schooling Show Series Awards. In 2014 she was elected to the GDCTA Board to head up the Youth Programs, introducing the GDCTA Letterman Jacket Program, Dressage Seat Schooling Medal Finals, & hosted the Atlanta Inaugural Lendon Gray’s Dressage4Kids Youth Festival.

This earned her GDCTA Volunteer of the Year Award then. She now is the Region 3 Coordinator and Chef d’equipe for the Junior Team and headed up fundraising for NAYC each year.

She has a passion for ponies and the National Dressage Pony Cup that she enjoys competing in.

Halliea Milner is the founder of Go With It Farm - an eventing riding school with

two locations in the North Metro area. Her main focus is sharing the sport of Eventing with her riders and inspiring the next generation of successful well rounded Event riders. She is active in USEA, USEF, USPC, USDF, and GDCTA. She has received trainer certifications from both USHJA and ARIA. A life-long student of the sport, she seeks continuing education opportunities from the top of the sport of dressage and eventing. Her riding school has produced the largest Pony Club in the south region in their very first year of operation. As a mother to an 11 year old event kid, Halliea has a keen interest in promoting current youth programs as well as developing new ones to attract and engage the youth of the sport.

Halliea is interested in promoting grass roots youth activities and supporting youth participation in GDCTA.

Chris Hutchings: Chris Hutchings is a long-time member of GDCTA, going

all the way back to the mid 1980s. She has served in a variety of volunteer roles over the years, including ring steward, gate keeper, runner, assistant competition secretary, cross-country jump judge, liaison for competition officials, announcer’s assistant, and awards table assistant. Chris also served as a board member in the late 1990s and designed and managed the very first GDCTA web site, which went live in early 1996 and served as a “first line of communication” to get results out to the world from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics equestrian events. These days, Chris manages the GDCTA schooling show recognition program and is also revising and editing the GDCTA Policies and Procedures Manual. Chris keeps a dressage horse at Shannondale Farm and can frequently be seen assisting at dressage clinics at Shannondale. She is a technical writer/information developer by profession, focusing primarily on developing user help systems for webbased software applications.

trainers and riders try to train these issues out of the horse by repetitive schooling, to build up so-called weakened muscles. This can result in stressing the horse’s psoas muscle, as it tries to compensate for moving heavily on the forehand.

Does your saddle fit properly? I invite you to go out to your horse and tie them, standing on a level surface.

Next, stand on a stool or bucket five to ten feet behind them. Notice the alignment of the horse’s body. Is one side of the rump higher than the other? How about the back – is one side lower than the other? Next, evaluate the shoulders. Is one bigger or higher? Chances are, you’ve found some differences between one side of your horse and the other. It’s easy to understand why a proper fitting saddle can be difficult to find!

The tremendous impact of compensation eventually ends up affecting the stifle and hock joints, and can also create side bone calcification and ringbone in the front hooves. While the load-bearing side will be loading and landing properly, it will be lower heeled, bigger hoof.

The misaligned first rib side will typically be a higher heeled, narrower hoof. This is often mislabeled as a club foot, however, it is not the same thing as a horse born with a club foot. The horse’s compensation can create medial and lateral imbalances in the hind hooves as well. When the horse is standing on four hooves that do not match in height, size or shape, you can imagine that the body on top of them will not be able to hold its structural integrity or function efficiently.

Over the past two decades of doing bodywork, I’ve found that 99% of the issues I’ve seen in horses starts with the misalignment of the first rib under the scapula – which is directly under the saddle. This is significant, because the first rib and scapula tie into C7 and T1 in the spine, where the neck (cervical spine) and upper back (thoracic spine) connect. Importantly all the nerves serving the head, foreleg and shoulder blade are in this region. Any blockages here negatively affect the blood supply to the muscles. This can lead to excessive muscle tension (tightness), which in turn can overload the tendons and ligaments of the lower leg. Amazingly, imbalances can be seen in this region even in foals from 7 months old.

These cumulative compensations can also lead to imbalanced internal organs, as well as an imbalanced meridian energy system.

How do horses misalign their first rib? It’s as easy as running through deep mud in the winter, or a hind foot overreaching and ripping off a front shoe. Also, horses who lean heavily on solid fences to graze the other side usually drop both first ribs, which creates strain on both shoulders. The psoas muscle, due to this strain, has to work harder to pick up the heavy front end. This can also lead to the painful “Kissing Spine” symptoms.

The misalignment of the first rib can have additional consequences for the horse, including the high/low hoof syndrome that farriers and barefoot trimmers are dealing with. When a horse stands on one low heel and one high heel 24 hours a day, everything above the hoof is shifted out of alignment. Just imagine how you would feel standing on one low heeled shoe and one high heeled shoe all day! Your body would have to adjust to this unevenness in your shoes. The high/low syndrome also affects the movement of the horse. Issues that can arise include taking the proper canter lead, connecting to only one rein, and heaviness on the forehand. Most

Reflecting on the weekend, competitor and USDF Region 3 Director Susan Bender was delighted. “It’s been such a super weekend! Of course it’s a major competition for all of us, but at the same time it’s been such a competitor-friendly show where everyone seems to be having fun and enjoying not only great sport but also wonderful camaraderie,� Bender observed. “The venue has been terrific and I’m hearing from exhibitors about how much they love the stabling and the grounds. For many of our riders, this is the biggest competition they’ve ever been to, and it’s a big deal for them to be here and they love it – it’s an accomplishment just to be here. I’d like to sincerely thank everyone at the GDCTA who I know have worked incredibly hard to make this show so successful.�

GDCTA with AYDC is pleased to announce its 7th Annual Lendon Gray's Dressage4kids Atlanta Youth Festival.

ATLANTA HAS THE 3RD LARGEST FESTIVAL IN THE COUNTRY! This year it is October 25-27, 2019 out at the GIHP. This unique program ties the TEAM (Training, Education & Mentoring) clinic with the Sunday Competition. TEAM welcomes any enthusiastic Youth Dressage Rider at all levels, and is a national program that you are accepted into and then invited to all activities Dressage4kids does. To apply, visit dressage4kids.org. Our Atlanta Youth Festival is run as a Schooling Show and counts toward 2020 GDCTA year-end awards.

We welcome our AYDC Junior riders TO AGE 25 to attend this amazing education-themed event.    

The TEAM clinic is on Friday/Saturday AYDC has its final schooling show of the year that Saturday.

Saturday evening we have a Group Dinner with a Panel Discussion with the theme of how Opportunity Meets Preparedness.

Sunday starts the competition of Written Test, One Dressage Test and one Group Equitation Class for an overall winner.

We also have teams, that when stabled together, do Stall Decorating and of course it is Halloween. How fun is that?

The 2019 Southeast Schooling Show Championships

Every year this event grows, from riders and horses and a much larger representation from other states.

This was a show with no complaints, just lots of thanks, and many pats on the back. The atmosphere was exciting; the competitors brought the whole family to watch, so there was a fantastic audience all day.

Friday afternoon the facility was busy with trailers coming in and riders schooling or grazing their horses. The vendors were setting up, and the smoothie lady was keeping us all going with extra expresso shots in the ice coffee!

Sara Beth Anton gave a fantastic course walk, with a large group of riders, followed by a course walk given by Hugh Lochore! The Opening Ceremonies were led by Katherine Johnson on Jeffrey. With Katherine dressed as a southern belle, and Jeffrey looking very regal, they entertained the crowd by working their way down the arena to lead the riders up to the pavilion for the National Anthem. Everyone stood, and once again not a dry eye in the house, but the tears soon dried when Pizza was served!

Saturday started with Dressage, with stadium and cross country following later in the day.

With so many family members there was a continuous sound of clapping and cheering from the pavilion and along the side of the arena. By late afternoon the final rider had headed back from cross country, the last dressage rider had finished and stadium was quiet. Some took their horses home so they could return for the prize giving, and others changed and relaxed while waiting for the last scores to be calculated, in the pavilion. The decorations were so beautiful, but it was still hard to believe it was Fall when it felt like the middle of summer!

The Saturday Award Ceremony was quite overwhelming! The Pavilion was packed, and the winners were all there waiting for their ribbon and prize, with their families and trainers plus the anticipation of who would be receiving the Starting Point Farm Scholarship awards, generously given by Phil and Melissa Town. It was Proud Parents, Grandparents, family members and Trainers raising the roof of the Pavilion with their cheers and clapping. The riders all had big smiles, and when it came to the scholarships, the finalists all went home with an award to help with their training. From 12 years old to over 50, all the recipients were over the moon.

Saturday evening, we had the relay races, with 8 teams, of all ages, showing everyone, they were not afraid to put on a horse’s head, and jump rope, attempt to jump over a fence and basically make a fool of one’s self!

Congratulations to all of those who took part!

Sunday, we drew the winners of the Trainer raffle. There were some very lucky riders who will now get the opportunity to ride with Trainers, they normally could not afford or have not had the opportunity to meet.

Sunday was a much calmer day, but the higher levels certainly rode well enough to impress the Judges.

Just because it was a schooling show, the cross country was a recognized championship course and the same with stadium. Seeing quite a few of our local dressage riders and eventers who are regulars at the recognized shows, competing in this competition, proves we are on the same par.

The trainers were very complimentary and while we see the recognize entries fall, we predict events like this will continue to grow!

The added bonuses to this event were the Photobooth! The riders loved it! Barn pictures, Christmas pictures, horse and rider‌. you name it, Betty Smith took it with the help of various items such as sunglasses for horses, a unicorn, halo and other props that just make the pictures too much fun!

The pumpkin competition was a huge hit, and not just with the kids! Adults like to carve Pumpkins, just in case you did not know!

Georgia Dressage and Combined Training Association Regular Meeting Minutes Overview

President Caren Caverly called the regular meeting of the GDCTA to order on September 16, 2019 at 7:00 pm at Shannondale Farm, 2395 Birmingham Rd, Alpharetta, GA 30004.

Recording Secretary, Joanne Morse, performed roll call. A quorum of the board consisting of Caren Caverly, Peri Lambros, Erin McCloud, Joanne Morse, Amanda Garner, Heather Ryfa, Amanda Moretz, and Peter West were present.

Jennifer Scherren was also present. Liz Malloy was able to phone in and listen. The minutes of the regular meeting for August 19, 2019 we emailed to board members prior to the meeting. Motion was made to discuss by Julie Shannon. Seconded by Peri Lambros. Motion made to accept by Erin McCloud. Seconded by Julie Shannon. Minutes accepted.

Treasurer’s Report: Peter West, Month of August shows a profit from the Wills Park schooling show.

VP of Combined Training, Rebecca Bowman, Rebecca handed out goody bags at the AEC’s to all the GDCTA members that were competing.

Response from this was very positive.

Membership, Mary Lou Freil, Membership down from this time last year in all areas.

Committee Reports o Awards Banquet Chairperson, Caren Caverly, Fiona Williams has started emailing companies about donating for the Silent Auction. She made a suggestion that we give members the opportunity to pick things off a list to purchase and donate. Joanne will get with Fiona to discuss further. o Communications, Joanne Morse, Trying out new ideas to get the eventing side of our membership more engaged.

down for this year. Still turned a small profit.  The Regional Championship entries are also down for this year. We are also short 3 rings that we need to find. Julie Shannon and Liz Molloy have offered their rings which will put us at 7 rings. Caren Caverly passed around a sheet for people to sign up to volunteer for open positions. Looking for ideas for Saturday night entertainment. Rebecca is helping with people to come and do a demo ride on a Mustang.

Finance Committee – Peter West, We currently have several sponsors for Regionals but still need more. Caren Caverly passed around a sheet with open classes that still need to be sponsored. Still looking for ads for program. Deadline for the program is the 26th of September.

Youth Chairperson, Rebecca Bowman, Liz Malloy had info on the Youth clinic with Jenny Caras that is next weekend.

Currently 12 riders but there is room for more. Letterman Jacket form has been updated. Pricing just needed to be confirmed before sheet can be sent out.

Pricing was discussed and a final $ amount was put on the sheet. Lendon Grey/D4K clinic coming up and is filling up nicely. Insurance for D4K needs to be turned in.

Georgia State Horse Show was held October 12, 2019, at the Chicopee Woods Agricultural Center in Gainesville.

Leslie Olsen is going to be the judge. Response has been great since it has been published. Price is $10 a person.  In the works: Horse Showing 101: to happen in the winter and be classroom style.

Covering a broad range of all things that are involved in attending a horse show and taking care of your horse. The plan is to do one for Dressage and one for Eventing.

Approximately 277 athletes and unified partners tried to be the state’s best in equestrian competition at the State Horse Show. Athletes will compete in showmanship, dressage, English and Western riding, and riding trails.
