GDCTA Horse of the Month RU Marley (a.k.a. Roo) He is such a quirky character! Roo graduated from Rutgers University (the RU in his formal name) in 2010 at the age of 2 with a class photo and report card to prove it! - at which time he was auctioned off to one of the students. He spent the next 3+ years with that student learning to be a riding horse - going on trails, dabbling with dressage, and learning to jump. As a coming 6 year old, he joined the Brewer clan and has been my riding partner dedicated to learning the art of dressage since. Roo is doing well with his dressage training and is currently schooling 4th level/Prix St. Georges. - June

Sure enough, in spring of 2020, there were, in one weekend, five riders and six horses showing this class. Ann Genovese, of the Good Horseman Foundation, commented that many years have gone by without a single entry in this class. This year four riders from GDCTA and Region 3 competed at the Festival of Champions in the Children’s Division. What this means is that we now have perhaps the youngest generation of riders riding at the 2nd-3rd level EVER. Karen was emphatic about this fact, noting that she has attended NAYC for the past 20 years. In October 2020, Ms. Liz organized a long-overdue Region 3 Jr/YR clinic with George Williams with many of these same riders.

For two consecutive days, junior and young riders from Region 3 welcomed the unique opportunity to participate in a clinic generously offered by Karen Lipp, completely free. Situated near the Blue Ridge Mountain range in Ball Ground, Georgia, Lipp opened her topnotch facility, Stal810, where these young riders had the opportunity to embrace valuable insight and instruction unique to each horse and rider combination. Elizabeth Molloy, aka Ms. Liz, from the Atlanta Youth Dressage Challenge show series, organized the event, also donating her time. Breakfast was donated by Catherine McQueen. Lunches were generously sponsored by Kristin Sheehan and Grace Burley.

With that statistic in mind, a huge congratulations goes out to the riders, their parents, and their trainers. A never-ending thank you clearly goes out to Lendon Gray and her fabulous Dressage4kids Program that not only provides education, but opportunity to connect, and even find your next horse through their donation program. Together we can develop the next generation of Youth talent and ensure the future of dressage.

This extraordinary event was Karen’s gift to Youth riders. Drawing from her own upbringing, Karen describes growing up in an environment where she didn’t have the financial means to ride and began working at a young age to support her dreams. As a result, today she is passionate about giving back to those who may not otherwise have an opportunity to experience training or clinics. Karen hopes her efforts will provide a doorway for other trainers to embrace the importance of giving back to riders when possible. Ms. Liz chose the riders and made clear effort to offer this opportunity to those riders that might not have access to clinics otherwise, “The middle of the triangle” as she called it.

Karen’s primary focus remains on training the competitive horse from beginning levels through the Grand Prix. She has coached and mentored countless junior and young riders. Her students have not only won numerous championships, but also obtained valuable horsemanship and lifelong lessons through her strong work ethic and enthusiasm for helping each rider grow to their full potential. Her riders are USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medalists, as well as Brentina Cup and NAYC Champions.

Ms. Liz hosts the Lendon Gray Dressage4kids event each year, an education-themed clinic and competition. Five years ago at the D4k--then EDAP clinic--Ms. Liz had Phoebe McNeely ride the FEI Children’s Team test as a demonstration. Lendon commented how there indeed are ‘ordinary’ horses represented at the Festival of Champions in this division (and ponies as well). THAT became the mission for Ms. Liz – to bring awareness to trainers, riders, and parents, that the FEI Children’s level is attainable. We clearly have the horses in our area.

Focus on the Basics I feel extremely fortunate to have been chosen by the GDCTA board to receive this year’s GDCTA training grant. I decided to use this wonderful opportunity to train with Lauren Sprieser, a mentor who has also become a good friend over the years. Lauren is a USDF bronze, silver, and gold medalist and international rider, both competing and coaching in CDIs. She has worked with amazing trainers such as Monica and Georg Theodorescu, Michael Barisone, Michael Poulin, Carol Lavell, and others. Lauren is also a writer for Chronicle of the Horse. If you’ve ever read her blog, you’ll know that she is witty and to the point which also makes for very entertaining lessons. She makes you work hard, and doesn’t beat around the bush, but she’ll make you laugh while you’re doing it.

By Olivia Reese, 2020 GDCTA Grant Recipient and Young Horse Champion. I can’t take the credit for her exceptional start. She had previously shown through second level, scoring well into the 70s. Now, we’ve all heard the sayings about mares, right? That a good mare will give you everything that she has, and a bad mare … well, you know. Rebellienne is the epitome of a good mare. That being said, she holds me accountable. Shift my seat ever so slightly? Change. Accidentally wiggle my leg? Change. Try to rush her in a walk pirouette? She just stops. She has me trained, for certain. In our first ride with Lauren, she was quick to point out who was running the show - Rebel. With both horses, Lauren went back to the basics. Rebellienne is the more forward of my two horses, so she was always my first ride with Lauren to conserve my energy. She is always happy to go forward; her favorite gait is medium trot. And that’s where Lauren caught me. While she is an exceptional mover, she uses it as a way to evade actually having to step under with her hind end and work.

I traveled up to Sprieser Sporthorses in Virginia after competing at Tryon in October. The training grant enabled me to take two of my horses with me: Falcon, who is showing fourth level and schooling Prix St. Georges and Rebellienne HVH who has shown through third level and is also schooling Prix St. Georges. Both horses came with me to the show in Tryon, where I showed Falcon at fourth level for the second time in his career, and a student and good friend of mine showed Rebellienne to earn her second level scores for her bronze. Both horses have all of the tricks for PSG but are two totally different rides with very different strengths. Riding two very different horses at the same level throughout the week ultimately gave me some really good perspective on what’s needed before I can make the jump to showing FEI.

Rebel was a Young Horse champion, remember? The Young Horse classes really reward big movers. Big walks, big trots, and big canters get big scores. But you know what is really hard to collect? Big walks, big trots, and big canters. Rebellienne’s trot is so comfortable that it is easy to sit into and allow her to go into almost a medium trot and canter all day long, and she has built the muscle to do it! Lauren immediately cracked down on me. I needed to ride Rebel like we were “on a tightrope.” I was to push her hind legs under and control her laterally. With both horses, when I pushed the hind leg under, they had a tendency (due to my aids) to climb a bit in the neck, so we also worked on pushing them correctly into the hand, where the back muscles were engaged, the core engaged, and the horse truly accepting the hand, as opposed to braced against it. At the same time, when I would push Rebel under, I had a tendency to lose her laterally. She would start over-bending to the inside, or riding haunches in. It felt like we rode most of the week in renvers to really ask her to step her hind leg to the center of her body.

Falcon is a 15-year-old Belgian Warmblood cross, owned by my good friend and client Pam Rappaport. Pam gave me the ride on Falcon over a year ago, and we have spent this last year building a relationship, strength, and working our way up the levels. He had previously only been to one show with his owner, showing training and first level, so in June I started him out at second level. In the past six months, I have taken him through fourth level, earning scores toward my silver medal. At home, we have been playing with the tempi changes and canter pirouettes to make our PSG debut.

Having to ride Rebellienne really together pointed out the glaringly obvious holes we had, the most notable being strength. She was strong for a second or third level horse, but the collection required for the Prix St. Georges was just something that I hadn’t addressed, and she won’t be able to coast her way around a Prix St. Georges test.

Rebellienne HVH is an 11-year-old Hanoverian mare owned by High Valley Hanoverians. I have had the pleasure of working with Annetta Coleman and High Valley Hanoverians for several years now, and she has blessed me with a sponsorship with this mare. Rebellienne is one of the smartest horses I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Prior my getting the ride on Rebellienne, she was a USDF Horse of the Year

Falcon is further along in his fitness and strength journey than Rebellienne. We have been schooling fourth level for several months, and really focusing on the collection and strength building aspects. Because he is not built as well as Rebellienne, we’ve been focusing our efforts on strength with him. He is shorter backed, but flatter through the croup, so the previous year had been really about building the strength across the topline and core to help him step under and carry for the upper-level collection. Falcon too has the tendency to want to climb through the neck instead of actually engaging the back and core muscles.

Rebellienne HVH

Lauren once again had us focusing on dropping the neck. Unlike Rebellienne, I had already been focused on driving the hind end under with Falcon, so we worked on dropping his poll to activate the back muscles and disengage his under-neck muscles. We talked extensively about making him honest to the outside rein, and we did what felt like a thousand circles through the week having him move solely off of the outside rein. Putting him into a new position where he had to really engage his back gave us some incredible changes, but also pointed out his weak spots. When he gets tired, he tries to brace through the neck and barrel through the change, often being late behind. When I started thinking about doing PSG, I immediately went to trying to school the three and four tempis. Lauren had us dial it back, making sure that each and every change was good - balanced and clean - before adding another. She gave us some exceptional exercises to rebalance the canter between changes, to ensure that the subsequent change was going to be as good as the one prior.

Falcon

The week of training with both horses was really the basics boot camp we needed to fill in the holes before we hit the PSG scene. Now I’m constantly asking myself each ride: Can I keep the horses even between all of my aids? Can they stay balanced, cadenced, relaxed? Can we engage the back and the core more? Make them quicker behind without losing balance? We really didn’t touch on the actual movements in the Prix St. Georges during the week (no whole lines of three tempis and we stuck to quarter pirouettes instead of half pirouettes). We did, however, work on all of the basics that were going to make these movements great. With Lauren’s help, I was given tools that will work on every horse that I have in my training string and help me become a better trainer for my horses and my students. President Caren Caverly called the regular meeting of the GDCTA to order on November 16, 2020 at 7:28 pm on Zoom. Recording Secretary, Lori Goodwin, performed roll call. A quorum of the board consisting of Caren Caverly, Joanne Morse, Lori Goodwin, Liz Molloy, Abigail Kroupa, Carol Tresan, Peter West, Peri Lambros, and Jennifer Scherrens were present. Also present were members Janie Pride, Mary Lou Freill and Danielle Perry. The minutes of the regular meeting for October 19, 2020 were emailed to board members prior to the meeting. Joanne Morse made a motion to approve the minutes. Liz Molloy seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer’s Report, Peter West - sent October report of financial statements via email. We have a small profit for the month. VP Dressage, Julie Shannon - Not present VP of Combined Training, Joanne Morse - New clinician possibly Michael Pollard again. Possibly the previously planned course walk clinic. Membership, Mary Lou Freil - Members are down 25 members, Eventing is up by 40 and Dressage down by 17. I am still having to manually change the renewal date in the Wild Apricot system until December 1, 2020. Communications, Joanne Morse - Working on next month’s newsletter. Show Committee, Caren Caverly - Nothing going on. Finance Committee, Peter West - Reached out to larger companies regarding donations (CocaCola and Delta). It’ll be a bit before there are responses. Youth Chairperson, Joanne Morse - Youth call last Tuesday, improvement in discipline. Working on fundraising. Awards, Amanda Moretz - Nothing new. Education and Young Horse, Caren Caverly reported that Laura Graves is coming in

December. The clinic is full and has a waiting list! 50 auditors allowed per day. •
