Competitor Tent is a unique, new mobile app aimed at providing competitive equestrians training and competition results and analytics across the disciplines of Dressage, Eventing, Jumpers, and Show Hunters. As riders, we share a passion for performance. But to achieve peak performance, we need insights. Until now, riders had to track their performance through the use of notepads, whiteboards, or personal instinct. When we set out to design Competitor Tent, we wanted to help riders analyze their results to discover insights, shape training, and ultimately to improve their performance. We want to enhance the riding experience by providing an app that is mobilefirst, data-driven, and crowd-sourced, with an emphasis on building community. The Competitor Tent app can be downloaded for free on the App Store at the following link: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/competitor-tent/id1466954851 13

EVENTING 3 times the fun
GDCTA Hosts Michael Pollard By Joanne Morse when a rider did something well was consistent no matter the jump height. Knowing that everyone was getting something positive out of the experience was of great importance to him. He is a trainer that I will definitely continue to work with in the future!
Photos by Lisa Dolny Photography
GDCTA was proud to host Michael Pollard for the first eventing clinic of the year on May 30-31 at Chattahoochee Hills Eventing. Between a pandemic and questionable weather forecasts there was uncertainty on what type of weekend we all were going to have. The skies parted though, and everyone was excited to be able to get out to enjoy the beautiful weather. Every participant showed up eager to learn with open ears and fresh horses. This was my first time organizing and I really lucked out to have such a great group of people sign up. They were super positive and easy to work with. Saturday was show jumping day and we had an early start. As a trainer, I felt incredibly lucky to be front and center in the ring to hear Michael’s instruction and see the riders progress through the exercises. It is always great to hear things being said in a different way and see new techniques for helping horse and rider navigate through challenging questions and come out better in the end. It did not matter if it was the Tadpole group or the Prelim group, everyone finished better than they started. Michael’s enthusiasm watching everyone improve was contagious. It was a long, hot day, but it finished with just as much energy as it started with. Sunday was cross country day and we were blessed with another day of perfect weather and eager riders! While the clinic was structured in a group setting, Michael was easily able to tailor each rider’s experience uniquely to what they needed. We saw horses and riders tackle questions they had not faced before, and while their first efforts may not have gone perfectly, with Michael’s positive guidance they were quickly able to smooth out the execution and jump through with confidence. Michaal’s ability to pick out small weaknesses in riders and make, sometimes minor, adjustments lead to huge improvements at every level. At the end of the day what stood out most to me was the fact that the look of satisfaction on Michael’s face

By Maren Elise FouchĂŠ-Hanson but can still ride a pony. So, no shows for Cara but we will be going again to both championships with Drake.
In an unpredictable year like 2020, I have learned a valuable lesson from my experience as the GDCTA grant recipient and that is adaptability. None of us knew what was coming! Some experts warned us but we are often in the same position with our horses and sport. Sudden injuries or life changes sometimes dramatically affect our best plans and we have to learn to change course as needed. And we should always look to the best experts for advice!
Drake is 25 years old this year. He just won his first international dressage championship at the Global Wellington CDI in February and now will be conditioning again for the 2020 AECs instead of Cara. Kristin was wonderful helping me through the travel plans and keeping Drake sound and happy. We worked on his form with gymnastics over fences and finding the correct pace on a pony which is very, very different from galloping my 16.2 TB! I was able to stable right next door to her at the AECs and enjoyed watching her take her horse Charm out for the Preliminary Championships. I was able to help out in the barn anywhere I could. We have developed a team to keep Drake sound and thriving. The cross training has really helped develop and maintain his muscling and mind for dressage too.
When I earned the 2019 GDCTA grant I planned to ride my Thoroughbred mare Swedish Fish "Cara" and work with Kristin Schmolze to qualify for the AECs in 2020. My pony, In My Feelings "Drake", was headed on a dressage path to the National Youth Dressage Championships when we had a disappointing show under extreme weather conditions and scored low enough we thought we might not be in the top 12 invited to go. So with my trainer Stella Sunstein advising (she had just moved away to Virginia from Kristin's barn) we went ahead and took some jumping lessons from Kristin with Drake and gave him an opportunity to try for the AECs in 2019 while also developing Cara for Novice in 2020.
I appreciate the opportunity to learn from a top rider/trainer and attend my first two AECs with her instruction and GDCTA support! It may not be on the horse we originally planned but now we are going twice instead of just once. And fingers crossed for Cara in the future! We will adapt with that plan too!
Kristin agreed to help us on short notice; Drake and I quickly qualified at beginner novice in the last month just before the championship deadline. We actually qualified and attended both dressage and eventing national championships! We finished 6th in the US in Children's FEI at Lamplight Festival of Champions and then met Kristin at the AECs at the Kentucky Horse Park. Drake won the dressage, carried though cross country, and had a final rail to finish 9th. It was an incredible experience and so rewarding. But I continued to plan ahead for 2021 to develop Cara as planned under the grant taking lessons on both horses. Then 2020 rolled around. I knew Cara wasn't working at her best. We didn't have anything glaringly wrong but decided to have a full vet check to see if we could pinpoint what, if anything, was wrong. Unfortunately, along with the season cut short by COVID, we are now looking to get her a full work up at UGA to see what is next. So now again we must adapt and make a plan for Drake. The competitions we attended last year allow us to attend the AECs again this year. We have worked to keep my body centered over him as I grow a bit more

YOU T
H CO RNER
Michael Pollard Eventing Clinic by Hana Swales Over the May 30-31 weekend, I had the opportunity to ride with Michael Pollard in GDCTA's eventing clinic at Chattahoochee Hills. The two-day clinic consisted of show jumping and cross county and I was ready to learn and take away as much as I could. My horse Britton and I are a semi-new partnership and show jumping was something we’ve been struggling with. Not even 20 minutes into our ride, Michael had us feeling better - really connecting - getting a good feel for how we should go about a stadium course. As we took the new “feel” to course, Michael was able to help us be successful and have a great jump school. Even if we had to do it five times to make it perfect, Michael was there, helping the whole way, making sure I understood what to do and how to do it. On Sunday we headed out on cross country and got right into it. The adjustability of strides and speeds we learned from the day before really helped us on cross country. My confidence has been slow building back up on cross country, but the tips and encouragement from him made it a super successful cross-country school session. I definitely learned a lot. I feel more confident and ready to show. I look forward to building my partnership with my horse after this clinic. If you ever get the opportunity to ride with Michael, do it! He was so specific to each horse and gave us all different ways to be successful. I will be riding with him as often as I can!

Need 4; two for award table, 1 for secretary, 1 for show manager. Distance judge and scribe—use judge’s box and hang sheet of plexiglass, extends three feet. Small opening to pass tests for signature. Need 4; two or possibly three rings. Cost is $400. Masks for staff and volunteers, officials, plus extras. Wholesale catalog company will provide masks, gloves, disinfectant wipes, and two touch-free dispensers— stand $93, dispenser $26, cartridge $49. $217 each; would need hand sanitizers for rings, disinfectant wipes, and gloves for rings. Around $1000 total for these supplies. Could get headset and mike for walkie talkies to make communication easier. Suggestion to make plexiglass shorter to avoid needing additional equipment.
will discuss at next meeting. Motion passed; Caren Caverly abstained.
