Southeast Schooling Show Championships The prospect of holding a Championships in December, the weekend after Thanksgiving, was a little daunting when first suggested. The weather could be good or bad in December having experienced snow, rain, and sun over the years. With a year to prepare, the SESSC committee did what they always do, and made plans for a successful show whatever the conditions. ǡ ʹͲʹͲ ǡ Ǩ Ǥ ͹ͲǦ Ǩ ǡ Ǩ ǡ Ǥ ǡ Ǩ ǡ Ǩ

2021 At a moment like this, it is down to everyone involved to carry on as if everything is perfect, which everyone did! The freestyle by Ashley Keller and Wisti Nelson could not have been better with the horses decked out in Fairy Lights. The story of the young girl (portrayed by Emma Renno) dreaming of being a top rider one day on her pony, was enjoyed by everyone. ǡ Ǩ Ǥ Ǩ ǨǨǨ ǡ ǡ as the national Lampoon’s Ǩ

Praise for the SeSSC In response to your request for a story, I’d like to tell mine. I grew up in California riding hunters, then as an older adult and a senior horse, switched to dressage. I wanted to progress in dressage so found a younger mare to compete. Unfortunately, she developed ulcers so after treating her and giving her some time off, then a move across country to Georgia, I slowly started her back to work. I board at Castle Hill Farm which is an eventing barn so long story short, we began to jump. My mare not only has a talent for it but absolutely loves it! The December show at Chatt was our first ever Three Phase and it was an absolute blast! At the age of 60, it’s the last thing I thought I’d be doing but here we are. The show was awesome and all the volunteers are the best! Thank you to everyone for making it a great show! ~Laura Langford and Doma Fabrizia

What a great show!!! All of my kids had a blast. The weather was perfect and everything ran so smoothly. Thanks for all you do for our riding community. ~Jennifer Burns Hello / thank you very much for an epic weekend. The facility was immaculate. Our stalls were ready for us and the check-in ladies were kind and patient. We felt the love from the moment we showed up until we left. The attention to detail in creating a fun and safe atmosphere was amazing. Keep up the great work and we can’t wait to come back! ~Joanne Vance and Freddie FHTA Tristan had an incredible experience at the SESSC! This was his first time competing his new horse and at Chatt Hills! It was a lot of first for him and competing two ponies in the same division was a ton of hustle but fun! Huge thanks to all of y’all! Well done! Cheers! ~The Bonds

This was my first SeSSC and it surpassed all my expectations! My gelding and I ended in 3rd in the BN Jr 3phase and it was an extremely rewarding mending to a tough show season for us! We can’t wait to come back in 2022! ~Sarah Staples

This was my first year of showing ever and we got our best score yet at the Championships! My first time in the 20s! I had a blast and I can’t wait to be back next year! Hopefully the weather is just as perfect! ~Julie Bethea on the BFG, Amoeba CT

We had an absolutely wonderful time!! All the horses were super happy with the environment, courses were super fun and everyone had a blast! ~Jen Scherrens, River Mist Equestrian LLC I just wanted to say that my overall experience was very good. The show was very organized and was very fun. I will be back next year. ~Lauren Rousell

As in many years past, the SESSCs did not disappoint. The Opening Ceremonies were impressive as was the food, the venue and the vendors. Our group always has a lot of fun!! I got to test my horse in a high class, high-energy

environment and hack around in the beautiful hills. Thank you ~Chris Aytug

This was my first time doing SeSSC. It was really fun. I got a great dressage score and did great in stadium and cross-country, which landed me Champion for Amoeba 3PH. It was a great way to end the year. I can’t wait to do it next year! ~Kayleigh Kendricks and Shooting Star

Hi! This was mine and my mare's (Pumpkin Pi) first show season ever and we qualified for the SeSSC. We had a great time finishing, with the best dressage score thus far, 3rd in adult tadpole 3 phase. We also had an accidental simultaneous dressage test with our horse and rider BFF. I love Chatt hills venue and am so happy to have found such a wonderful niche! Can't wait for next year! ~Audrey Woelper

This was our 1st time going. The weekend was a wonderful experience! Beautiful farm/facility and lovely decorations for Christmas. Fun activities for riders and the rest of us. Great shopping with the vendors, and loved the coffee spot. The show itself was very well run. It was an excellent learning opportunity for our rider as well. Thanks! ~Traci Zierk, Rider = Samantha 'Sam' Zierk

My daughter had a blast. She wasn’t in the championship but she took her new pony to the show to compete for the first time and got 1St and 2nd place! The whole show was wonderful. We can’t wait until next year!! ~Kristene and Brooklyn Young

We all love the schooling show championships so much. As always, Penny and the SeSSC committee worked tirelessly to give schooling show competitors a rewarding championship experience. This year, I particularly loved the Christmas theme and performances! We are so fortunate in the southeast to have a world class facility like Chattahoochee Hills Eventing available. As well as a group of amazing organizers that have developed the Southeast Schooling Show Championships from its inception to a must attend event. I can't wait for next year! ~Taylor Blumenthal

This show was our first at Chattahoochee Hills SeSSC. We participated in the non-championship 3phase eventing classes, Beginner Novice, 2nd place. This show will definitely not be our last. We had a great time. The care of the staff is outstanding; the courses are immaculate and well maintained; and the event was just plain fun even down to the Christmas decorations. Everything seemed to run like clockwork. The confidence this show has given our young rider to continue in this amazing sport cannot be measured. Thank you to the organizers for the great event. ~Kelly Howell We at Florida Horse Trials Association look forward to this event every year since it’s inception, and it’s been one of the most fun weekends of the year for us! The camaraderie, the welcome we receive, the activities, the prizes, the food, and, of course, the competition itself are all first-rate! We are proud to sponsor some small part of it every year and will continue to do so. We appreciate all the hard work that goes into running an event and

The show itself was amazing. Riders had such a great attitude; they did not just come to win, they came to have a wonderful time, and from the comments we heard everyone had a fantastic weekend! There were more hoses than we had ever seen at this event, and keeping it all running smoothly was a task, but we made it! A fun prize-giving Saturday afternoon, including the retirement of ‘Captain’ followed by Jumping under the lights. Anyone who has out on a show will appreciate everything we did was a huge undertaking, and it was a gamble to see if it would succeed! Sunday kept us equally as busy with the more advanced divisions but ended with another fun prize-giving Sunday afternoon!

This event really is the schooling show rider’s Show of the year. It was not really about the fancy ribbons, although that was impressive, it was being able to attend an event where every rider felt special! This event, hopefully , will be able to grow with continued support from other areas in the southeast. It may not have the support of all our trainers and upperlevel riders, but it is growing every year. This was the fifth year I believe everyone who participates in making it successful is even more determined to see it develop into an event that is recognized throughout the horse community. Congratulations to Chatt Hills Eventing for making everything so perfect, and the ladies who make it all happen; Penny Morse; Betty Smith; Laurie Rowell; Mags Lindsay; Megan Gosch; Vicki Dice; Ellen Taylor and Joanne Morse.

During lunch something that George Williams talked about is the Dressage Pyramid Training scale (Rhythm, Relaxation, Connection, Impulsion, Straightness, and

My name is Tessa Geven, I am 14 and I have been riding my whole life. I compete in both eventing and dressage. I have earned both my USDF Bronze and USDF Silver medals and I won the 2021 FEI Ponies and the 2021 FEI Childrens. This year I am hoping to compete in the FEI Juniors. I am so grateful to have won the 2021 GDCTA Junior/Young Rider Training Grant. I decided to use the funds to ride Bruce in the GDCTA Jeremy Steinberg clinic at Shanondale Farm and also in the USDF Region 3 Junior/Young Rider clinic with George Williams. Bruce is a 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Donna Gafford. I am hoping to show him in FEI Juniors. At the GDCTA-hosted Jeremy Steinberg clinic, we worked a lot on quickening Bruce’s hind legs, focusing on him being quick and uphill especially in the down transitions. One of the things that we did to help with engaging him was shoulder in as well as travers. Because I struggle keeping Bruce on my aids, we worked a lot on transitions and one of the things that Jeremy mentioned was that I need to be able to “whisper the aids.” Another thing that he told me was to use as little aid as possible. He was very helpful for me. I learned a lot and enjoyed his teaching.

Collection.) He really went in detail about all six parts of the pyramid and what all of the parts that go into it mean as well as how they are all connected to each other. When I left the clinic and got home, I had a lot of new exercises to work on and practice. A big thanks to GDCTA for this wonderful opportunity and support. Not only did I enjoy riding for Jeremy Steinberg and George Williams, I also learned a lot of useful things that improved me and my horse. I am looking forward to competing in 2022.

While at the USDF Region 3 George Williams clinic we continued to work a lot on getting Bruce more supple and more on my leg. In other words, lots of shoulder in, travers, and half passes as well as canter-to-trot transitions to quicken his hind leg. With George Williams, I did a lot of little exercises. One of the exercises I did was half pass, straighten with the other leg, then half pass again, and then repeat. It was to make Bruce accept the inside leg and stay in connection better.

'Tis the Season By

Bill Woods

If you are a Northerner, and particularly

Christmas treats for horses . . . stockings stuffed with carrots and candy canes hung on stall fronts.

if you and your horse reside beyond the confines of suburban curbs and sidewalks, some late weekend afternoon before Christmas you're apt to bundle up, braving the cold, to go Christmas caroling on horseback. Your harmonizing will be best received if the ground is frozen so the hordes don't punch deep hoof prints all over your audiences' yards . . . And if enough stirrup cup or Bloody Marys have been consumed to render anyone's inability to recognize what's being sung immaterial.

Wintertime on horseback can be a special time. Though not exactly at Christmas, I remember a lesson I taught years ago in Massachusetts that manifested this feeling: Eight o'clock in the evening, four "hobby riders" on school horses, and me on my event horse pressed into night-time duty. Not a typical "look up, stop pulling" indoor ring lesson but a ride through the fields, fresh with eight inches of virgin powder—every crystal glittering in the full moon's light, the bare branches casting long, sharp shadows—all framed by a blanket of stars. It was a vista worthy of Wenceslas and common to outdoors people but something memorable for my students from the city.

The fragrance of fresh hay in a snug, buttoned-up barn that is out of the chill, and the sound of contented munching. According to a Christian legend popular in Norway, at midnight in the first moment of Christmas Day the animals speak. It is a time of magic. For some of us fortunate ones, while it remains a marvel, it's not that unusual. If we know how to listen, our animals talk to us all the time.

Merry Christmas!!!

increased about $1,600 because of more clinics and shows. • Grants (Janie Pride): We had a wonderful year. As we did not have any open applicants, we gave out two adult amateur grants. They are in the process of fulfilling their requirements. • Horse Show (Caren Caverly & Carol Tresan): Entries are up at the shows from pre Covid. Labor Day Dressage Classic was held with entries up 97 from 2020. All recognized shows had attendance up. Schooling shows had an added show, and the show well attended, and the show made money. Summer finals did well with the same attendance from last year and it made money as well. Schooling show recognition received a request for 81 Awards. • Youth (Joanne Morse): Created awareness regarding medals class. Need to remind judges about equitation looking for a ballpark score of 70. Letterman jackets are up. The dressage for kids Atlanta youth festival had a fun time and had the largest teen clinic of 17 people. 26 kids were in the festival which was educational themed. In Region 3, GDCTA had a great representation. George Williams came again and almost all GDCTA riders. There is a strong pipeline of youth members coming along. We did dissolve the Youth Board and now two juniors will be appointed to the regular board. Caren asked for any nominations from the floor for junior board members.
