Dear Members, We’ve made it through the first month of 2021! To celebrate, this issue will recap the Gala and feature the fun coming up in the future.

Let’s begin with a huge congratulations and thank you for making the first (and maybe the last) Virtual Awards Gala a big success! We very much missed all the glam of the night – as a whole we horsemen and women clean up good – but we also enjoyed this video virtual version too. A few fun facts about this event: There were 63 champions – 35 recognized and 28 schooling; 219 ribbons were won – 87 recognized and 132 schooling. There were 14 new letterman jacket winners (watch for the new program coming for schooling show riders in 2021) with 9 patches earned. The silent auction boasted 105 items that garnered 848 bids! The Barn Basket raffle had 5 baskets with 907 tickets sold; and four generous donations rounded out the evening. There were 517 video views on the night they were posted - January 27th! If you missed the videos, they are posted to the GDCTA Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzzX2TaHPR9Y6VFi6l6P3Cw Next, we need to look forward to a full year of activities while keeping our eyes on the October 8-10 GAIGs/ USDF Region 3 Dressage Championships as the work for that show starts now. Competitors are already earning scores toward qualifying and we are ready to secure sponsors and vendors! My hope is that we will be closer to normal before Regionals therefore allowing a larger show with crowds of spectators and many vendors. Let’s hope!

In the meantime, we have many activities lined up. If you are interested in participating behind the scenes, the Show Committee and Volunteer Coordinators would love to hear from you.

GDCTA Horse of the Month Missing Digit (a.k.a. Digit) Digit was rescued by a kind couple from the Bastrop Kill Pen- dumped with a group of other off the track thoroughbreds. Shortly after, I found his ad on Craigslist and couldn't get him off my mind - his name was Max then. Right before taking him home my husband lost his finger in an army military training accident. I told my husband that if we could still get him (in the middle of his multiple surgeries and physical therapy) that he could name the new horse- hence "Missing Digit."

Despite some track injuries, since then Digit has fox hunted and shown up to second level dressage. He loves stretchy trot and shoulder in.

About Digit He will knock you over for a German Horse Muffin. He is definitely a horse with a lot of opinions! He challenges me every day, but has become my best friend and a phenomenal partner!

Likes- when his dad gives him treats. He thinks that all men are cookie delivery devices.

Dislikes- changes in routine, funny smells.

GDCTA MEMBER TRAINING GRANT S Requirements

The GDCTA Grant has been established to provide funding support for GDCTA member-riders who are working to sharpen their riding skills. Four grants of $800* each will be offered to GDCTA members for concentrated work with a trainer of their choice within one year of receiving the grant award.

These grants represent an investment by GDCTA. The recipient understands that the membership will benefit as a result of the recipient’s experience, therefore it is a requirement that the recipient will:

The mission of the GDCTA Grant Program is to provide educational opportunities to members who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to and/or excellence in the sport as well as service and ambassadorship within the Association.

The grant is meant for a GDCTA member to have the opportunity to be in a training situation that is not readily available during the course of his/her daily pattern. Grant monies must be used to participate in educational programs that include, but are not limited to: seminars, workshops, clinics and training programs offered by recognized or certified instructors.

As most high schools will not give a Varsity Letter for Equestrian Sport, GDCTA rolled out a new Letterman Program that mirrored a high school travel team to fill this void. Started in 2014, Scores for Dressage are one point harder than Qualifying for Regionals, and the equivalent for Eventing. We reward the enrolled student for their pursuit of excellence and riding endeavors throughout the levels. Are YOU Qualified?! Program Details can be found on the Website!

2020 - What a Year for GDCTA!

by Janie Pride Wow! It’s been quite a year for the GDCTA Board members, GDCTA members, riders, owners, and trainers! We started off the year 2020 excitedly awaiting new meetings, competitions, clinics, the USDF and USEF Conventions, and the Annual GDCTA Awards Gala and silent auction.

Each year GDCTA holds a super Gala with food, drinks, award ceremonies, a big silent auction, and the Barn Basket raffle. It’s also the time of year when GDCTA members visit and celebrate with new and old friends.

The GDCTA Board works quite hard to plan and put on this celebration. A grand time is had by all!

We all started the competition year of 2020 with great expectations. We were ready to continue our riding career with lessons, clinics, competitions, Regionals, getting together with riding friends, riding activities, and participating in the GDCTA Gala! We all rode hard and strived to increase our competition scores so that we could walk across the Gala stage and receive a coveted GDCTA Recognized Show or Schooling Show award or Letterman Jacket! We also looked forward to bidding on the silent auction or winning a Barn Basket in the raffle.

Bidding on the items was easy and the system let us know when we were outbid. Convenient! We could also purchase items using the Buy It Now option listed on the item and pay using credit cards and our phones.

There was also a feature which allowed us to set up a virtual showing of award winners using videos. June Brewer worked an insane number of hours putting the video of the award winners together. Please thank Caren Caverly, June Brewer, Liz Molloy, Peri Lambros, and the GDCTA Board for their tireless work on the Gala! Caren arranged for a group of “elves” to pick up winners’ awards, silent auctions, barn baskets, and make them available for pick up to the recipients.

Whew! What a mass undertaking! The Gala went off smoothly.

2020 was going to be an extra special year for me!

Then COVID hit! Our daily lives and riding lives – everything, really – changed drastically in a short space of time. No longer could we all meet at the barn or go out to eat as a group. Lessons, competitions, clinics, and meetings were canceled.

The USDF and USEF Conventions were held as ZOOM meetings. Everyone in our riding community faced hardships and missed opportunities.

Then the question came up. What are we going to do about the Awards Gala? The GDCTA Board members and GDCTA members were concerned about what we could do to put on our yearly event. The GDCTA Board spent hours researching solutions to our problems. Caren Caverly, the GDCTA President, found a company that could help us, CLICKBID. Their auction software was a real solution to our problem. It allowed us to set up a virtual vehicle in which we could manage an online silent auction and raffle.

The Board allowed me to establish Special Pony Awards in honor and memory of my incredible Dutch ponies, Ico and Ilja. The ponies really put me on the dressage map. I was so excited about giving out the awards. If you know me, you know I love being on stage! I was a bit disappointed, but June did a fabulous presentation of the awards. Many members got together to watch the winners’ presentations together. I hope my Pony Award winners could “feel” my congratulations across the Internet.

Presents 2021 USDF L PROGRAM Want to learn what dressage judges are thinking as they watch your test? Want to become a dressage judge?

The L Program is the place to start. Part 1 of the Program, A Judge’s Perspective, is open to anyone who wishes to understand more about the intricacies of dressage. It consists of 3 two day sessions that include classroom and live horse demonstrations. All sessions will be held in Blaine, TN and strict covid precautions will be maintained. Part A, Introduction to Judging and Biomechanics, will be taught by S judge Kathy Rowse on April 3-4. Part B, Judging Criteria for Gaits, Movements, and Figures, will be taught by FEI judge Jayne Ayers May 15-16. For Part C on July 3-4, Basic and Collective Marks, your instructor will be current S and former O judge Axel Steiner. Those wishing to take the Program as the first step to becoming licensed USEF dressage judges must enroll as Participants, take all three sessions, and will receive more individualized instruction. People wishing only to further their dressage education may enroll as Auditors and may take any or all parts.

If there is sufficient interest, we will schedule Part 2, Candidate Evaluation, of the L Program later this year.

This part is only open to ten Participants. Applicants must have received two scores of 65% or better at second level test 3 and one score of 62% or better at any third level test. Part 2 consists of 2 two session days of intensive practice judging at a competition, completion of the prescribed hours of sitting with or scribing for a dressage judge, followed by a written and oral exam at an actual show. Those passing become recognized schooling show judges. Those passing “with distinction” may enter the “r” program and begin the long climb to “S” status.

What Are T he Judges T hinking?

What are the judges thinking? Everyone, whether you are in the ring or outside, wants to understand what the judges look for when we go down the centerline. Every day we train for the moment we enter at A and the scoring begins. Although we may never know what every judge is thinking, we can get a closer look at what some want to see. Thanks to USDF and Margaret Freeman on Saturday, December 5, I attended the Youth Education meeting via the USDF 2020 Virtual Convention to learn more about judging for dressage.

The lecture exposed us to the views of the judge at C and the judge at E. We walked through the USEF Training level test 3, First level test 2, and finally, First level test 3. All the attendees were instructed to write down the score and comment that they thought were appropriate for that movement.

Afterwards, we were shown the test again. Margaret Freeman then presented us with the scores and comments she would give for each particular movement and the scores for the collective marks. It was a very eye-opening experience!

The first test we watched seemed to be a fairly good test. At first, I wasn’t looking closely at every detail.

However, after she went through the test again, I was astounded at how much could be pulled out of one movement. Every circle and every transition matters in the show arena. By the last test, I really understood. I could break down the test to the point where my scores were almost identical with Judge Margaret Freeman.

As we all can infer, as a judge, you have to know exactly what you are looking for.

As for the knowledge of the riders, Margaret explained some of the elements that are looked at closely and impact the collective marks on the back of the test. Judges are always looking for impeccable position, but what exactly does that mean? The rider’s straightness is key not only to keep themselves balanced, but also to keep the horse balanced. Some may wonder about the collective mark relating to the rider’s usage of aids.

Freeman concluded that she is looking for whether the horse is correctly interpreting the rider's aids.

Furthermore, she assesses whether the rider and horse genuinely get along and understand each other.

It was an incredible opportunity to grasp the thoughts of such a talented judge. I felt I was behind the scenes of a dressage test. After participating in Margaret Freeman’s lecture, I understand what I need to strive for in the arena.

Not only did we grasp a deeper understanding of judging, we also were able to engage in a Q&A after each test. Some attendees asked questions about looking at the tests in real-time from the perspectives of both the judge at C and E. Submit Your Interscholastic Eventing League Team Roster by February 15

Any rider who is currently in 7th through 12th grade is eligible to become an IEL member. Members who wish to join an IEL team should register with the USEA as a Junior Member. Please note, IEL memberships are by calendar year, not school year, so Seniors who graduate in the spring will still be eligible to compete in interscholastic team challenges in the summer and fall.

Team representatives should send their team rosters to the USEA Senior Director of Membership Services Jennifer Hardwick at Jennifer@useventing.com by February 15.

Please list every member on your IEL team.

As this is the IEL’s first year, new IEL members can be added throughout the year. New IEL teams will also be able to register and submit rosters at any time during the year.

As there is currently no option to select your IEL team on your USEA membership profile, the only way to be included in the IEL is to have your name included on an IEL roster.

There is no minimum or no maximum number of members that can be on an interscholastic team. However, in interscholastic team challenges, teams are limited to three or four athlete/horse combinations. IEL teams are still welcome to put forward multiple teams at a single interscholastic team challenge.

About the USEA Interscholastic Eventing League In August 2020, the USEA Board of Governors approved the creation of the USEA Interscholastic Eventing League (IEL) as an official program of the USEA. The mission of IEL is to bring together junior riders who are in the 7-12th grade and provide a supportive community through which students can continue to pursue their riding interests. A group of junior members in the 7th-12th grade who share a common bond (same barn, same school, same Pony Club, etc.) register with the USEA as an interscholastic team.

Host Locations for 2021 Adequan®/USEF Eventing Youth Team Challenge Announced

Lexington, Ky. - US Equestrian has announced the inaugural host locations for the 2021 Adequan/USEF Eventing Youth

Team Challenge, the newly evolved format of the former North American Youth Championships (NAYC). The Adequan/ USEF Eventing Youth Team Challenge offers opportunities for eventing athletes ages 14-25 to gain valuable experience in a team competition environment representing their respective United States Eventing Association (USEA) Areas at the FEI CCI 1/2/3* levels. The Adequan/USEF Eventing Youth Team Challenge will host multiple bi-coastal legs in the short format and culminate with two long format finals in the fall of 2021.

“We have spent a great deal of time developing this concept to provide an important development opportunity for our youth athletes to gain valuable team experience and participate in a championship format that we believe can be successful across the country,” said Jenni Autry, Managing Director of Eventing. “We are working to finalize additional West Coast short format competitions, which we will announce in the coming weeks, and look forward to launching this new pathway competition for our youth eventing athletes in 2021.”

Intercollegiate Team Rosters are Due on February 15

One of the many benefits of participating in the USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Program is receiving a discount on an annual USEA membership. A Full membership with the USEA costs $100 per year, where a Collegiate membership costs $75. However, the discounted Collegiate membership is only offered to undergraduate students who are listed on their official team roster, and the deadline to submit a roster is Monday, February 15!

2020 Championships will be allowed to compete in the graduate division this year. The Championship for graduate students will be scored and awarded separately from the Championship for undergraduate students. Graduate division competitors must represent a school that is affiliated with the USEA. Please remember that every school must renew its affiliate membership each year.

About the USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Program This policy is strictly related to receiving the USEA Collegiate membership discount. Collegiate students whose names are submitted after February 15 will still be considered Collegiate Members and have their names appear on the Intercollegiate leaderboards and participate in the Championships.

The USEA Intercollegiate Eventing Program was established in 2014 to provide a framework within which eventing teams and individual competitors could flourish at universities and colleges across the country. The USEA offers a discount of $25 on annual USEA memberships for current students of universities and colleges registered as Affiliates with the USEA. Georgia Dressage and Combined Training Association Regular Meeting December 14, 2020 President Caren Caverly called the regular meeting of the GDCTA to order on December 14, 2020 at 7:05 pm on Zoom.

V.P of Eventing, Joanne Morse, performed roll call.

A quorum of the board consisting of Caren Caverly, Peri Lambros, Joanne Morse, Liz Molloy, Peter West, Carol Lane Tresan, Abigail Kroupa and Amanda Moretz were present. Also present was Heather Askew, Olivia Reese, Ashley Boyd, June Brewer and Janie Pride.

The minutes of the regular meeting for November 16, 2020 were emailed to board members prior to the meeting. Joanne Morse made a motion to approve the minutes. Abigail Kroupa seconded. Motion passed.

Board Reports: President: Caren Caverly, We have had several board members step down so remaining people on the ballot have been added to the board. Ashley Boyd will be the new recording secretary. Janie Pride and Heather Askew are joining as at large board members.

Treasurer’s Report: Peter West, Financial statements were emailed to the board prior to the meeting and discussed.

members to work on getting silent auction items. We still need 4 more barn baskets. Laura Graves and Michael Pollard did congratulatory videos for the champsions.

Communications: Joanne Morse, December newsletter went out today. Readership is steady.

Education and Young Horse Chairperson: Julie Shannon, not in attendance. Laura Graves was this past weekend. Everyone loved Laura. Horses and riders from all levels were in attendance. Clinic was limited to 50 auditors due to COVID. Clinic lost $22.

Caren made a motion that when we do clinics it should be a raffle instead of being the same people riding every time. Joanne Morse seconded the motion. Discussion followed. Motion approved.

Convention: Several board members discussed their experiences with the virtual Zoom convention. Caren discussed the topics that would affect GDCTA. She also went through the educational events that she attended.

A new volunteer coordinator was assigned. Board members were assigned to committees. Each board member was assigned a month to reach out to new members,

VP of Combined Training: Joanne Morse, working on venues for clinics.

Membership: Mary Lou Freil, Membership is down a little from same time last year. Junior members are up.

Budgets due for January meeting.

Awards Banquet Chairperson: Caren Caverly, Silent auction and Raffle baskets start on the 20th. Winner videos start on the 27th. Auction and raffles end at noon on the 29th. After the auction ends the winner videos will go onto the website and YouTube. Abigail suggested a watch party on Facebook counting down to the videos going live. Caren sent out a list for the board members to know which awards they are picking up to deliver.

Horse Show Chairperson: Julie Shannon, Committee members include Joanne Morse, Abigail Kroupa, Peter West. Wills Park took our date away in August for Summer Finals. Caren has contacted the head person in Parks and Rec to try to get our date back. She has a meeting scheduled. Possible new show date for April 17-18.

Regular Meeting January 18, 2021 President Caren Caverly called the regular meeting of the GDCTA to order on January 18, 2021 at 7:05 pm on Zoom.

V.P of Eventing, Joanne Morse, performed roll call.

A quorum of the board consisting of Caren Caverly, Joanne Morse, Liz Molloy, Peter West, Janie Pride, Julie Shannon, Jennifer Scherrens, Abigail Kroupa and Danielle Perry were present. The minutes of the regular meeting for December 14, 2020 were emailed to board members prior to the meeting. Julie Shannon made a motion to approve the minutes. Abigail Kroupa seconded. Motion passed.

Board Reports:

Youth Chairperson: Joanne Morse, Joanne Morse made a motion to implement the Schooling show Letterman program for 2021. Jennifer Scherrens Second. Motion passed.

Awards: Janie Pride, no report Education and Young Horse Chairperson: Julie Shannon, Confirmed dates for JJ Tate for June 26-27.

Janet Foy will be coming in 2022. Also waiting to hear back from Laura Graves.

Recognized Letterman Jackets cost came into discussion. Caren made a motion that we increase the cost of the letterman jacket. Jennifer Scherrens seconded.

Motion passed to raise the cost of the jackets to $75.

Yearbook costs are ever increasing so discussion followed to figure out how to get that cost down a bit more.
