Dearest members, Woohoo! We hope to see spectators at the shows again! Vendors are welcome to return as well. USEF put out another COVID-19 Action Plan update this month stating in part: . . . Beginning May 17, 2021, USEF will implement new protocols regarding the use of face coverings/masks at USEF-licensed competitions in response to recently updated CDC recommendations. This change means that unless more restrictive requirements are imposed by state or local governments or by competition organizers, any individual who is fully vaccinated is no longer required to wear a face covering/ mask at USEF competitions when outdoors and at least six feet from any other individuals, except individuals in the same immediate household. However, if you enter an area that is fully or partially indoors, you must wear your face covering/mask and stay socially distanced. Since there is a likelihood that you will enter an indoor area while at a competition, stay prepared and keep a face covering/mask with you at all times. We will continue to support organizers who feel it is in the best interest of their event to impose stronger requirements. Last call for GDCTA yearbook advertising! This is the place reach our members because people hold on to these commemorative issues of Collected Remarks. The advertising deadline is June 1st. For details, check out our media planning guide on the website: www.gdcta.org/advertise. Remember that scores earned at GDCTA-hosted shows, count twice toward the requirements! When Equestrians Pull Together, Magic This month we saw once again what a tightknit and caring community the Georgia equestrian community can be when we came together in support of the Marsh family with the GDCTA-recognized schooling show benefit at Foxberry Farm.

Laurel Marsh has been a big part of the horse community for many years. An avid eventer and pony clubber, she has always been a huge proponent of the Pony Club and GDCTA. Because of her enthusiasm and support, she has inspired countless students, including her own children to excel in the horse world. She has been there for all of us whether it has been hauling our horses or helping our kids with homework. Laurel and her husband Robert Marsh have three beautiful children: Mason (16), Everett (12) and Loralei (9). In October 2020, Everett Marsh was diagnosed with ALD. He is 12 years old. All newborns in the state of Georgia are now screened for ALD but were not when the children were born.

To help the family with the financial burden, former Foxberry Farm managing partners Joy Buchanan and Kim Abernathy pulled together a GDCTA-recognized benefit schooling show at Foxberry Farm on May 2, 2021. Joy also ran an online auction prior to the event.

"The ALD Marsh Family Benefit Show was a huge success!! We raised over $17,000.00! We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help. Thank you to all who donated, participated in the silent auction, and everyone who came to the show, volunteered, and helped with the planning! None of this would be possible without everyone coming together!" - Joy O'Fee Buchanan & Kim Abernathy

“Adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD, is a deadly genetic disease that affects 1 in 17,000 people. It is an X-linked genetic disease, therefore it mostly affects boys and men. ALD involves multiple organs in the body so it most prominently affects the brain and spinal cord. This brain disorder destroys myelin. Myelin is the protective sheath that surrounds the brain’s neurons. Without the myelin sheath the nerve cells that allow us to think and to control our muscles no longer function correctly. ALD knows no racial, ethnic or geographic barriers.” After Everett's diagnosis, Robert and Laurel took their other two children in to be tested. They then received the devastating news that all three of their children are positive, meaning they all have ALD. Everett is currently undergoing an experimental therapy in Minnesota at a tremendous financial cost to the family and has since lost his eyesight to this terrible disease. Photos by Lisa Dolny who donated her photography time to record the event.

Happens!

"I am so overwhelmed with emotion by the outpouring of love and support for Everett and our whole family. Horse people have a reputation for being all kinds of crazy, but you will never meet a more generous and loving group of people. Two ladies Kim McCollum Abernathy and Joy O'Fee Buchanan, that I love like sisters, that have made me the person I am, gave their hearts and souls to plan this benefit. I can’t even begin to tag all the people that helped, donated to the auction, showed up to volunteer, bought products, donated money, etc. Seeing the faces of so many past students and boarders warmed my heart in a way I didn’t know was possible. I don’t think I will ever have another day in my life that can recreate how it felt to be rallied around by the most amazing community. I can’t stop crying tears of joy and appreciation to you all. I want to thank everyone personally, please know how much this means to my family and to Everett’s treatment. Thank you so much from the entire Marsh Family." - Laurel Marsh

May 2, 2021: This popped up in my memories from six years ago. How fitting that today we are returning to the place where his passion for horses began. We are excited to be heading to the amazing benefit that Foxberry Farms is hosting today. Their generosity is incredibly humbling. - Laurel Marsh

Enamored with Dressage by Susan Travis

I was asked what makes some of us so drawn to, enamored of, dressage while other horsepersons are on the other end of the spectrum, some even thinking dressage is too complicated and possibly even taxing for the horses. My Spirit Guides tell me that this is a time of co-creation on earth, that each of us has learned through many life experiences how to create individually (although it so often feels as if we don’t know!), but now we strive to create as like-minded, or like-vibration, human spirits here on earth together – not by accident! For those who love horses, or any animals for that matter, co-creating with them is a perfect place to start the learning process. Other human partners can be so opinionated, (as can we!), and divergent opinions staunchly defended can make co-creation seem like an uphill battle. But dressage offers the benefits of co-creation without the sometimes intense struggle we experience with other people. Horses, as a rule, are very willing to work with their partners, strive to please, and unless they are in pain, are quite agreeable about trying to learn new steps. They seem to take great joy and pride in doing so as a matter of fact. For the detail oriented, accomplishment loving of us, dressage is perfect. There is always a next level, always another goal and always the joy (or hopefully always!) of the journey. Of course other activities with horses can be just as intense and goal oriented and have the potential to create a strong feeling of partnership and love with our horses. Joy being the ultimate goal in life, because when we feel joy we are one with our Higher Selves, feeling the same vibration as that of our true selves, trail riding or even ground work and unmounted games, satisfies the desire to co-create. Dressage is just unique in its complexity of components, not limited to speed and greater speed to which there is a limit, as its goal, for example. And there’s no end to the possibilities of new learning and accomplishment, just layers and layers to joyfully uncover.

About Susan Travis: A life-long dressage enthusiast and horsewoman, Susan Travis is dedicated to making only the strongest connections with her clients – human and animal, alike. Wherever you find yourself on your journey, take the time to reflect on what matters most to you. Ask yourself, am I aligned with my desires and purpose? If not, now is the time to create the foundation to reach those goals. Susan is available to offer the insight and clarity you need. Whether you have questions regarding your personal relationships with love, family, pets, money or health, her counseling and wisdom offer you unparalleled access to a new level of awareness and truth. Open your spiritual mind, allow positive energy into your life, and start living your dream! Psychic readings are available by appointment (whitecrest@juno.com / 585-335-3998). Readings are offered over the phone or in-person. Follow Susan on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SusanTravisIntuitiveGuidance

By Alice Burley Over Easter Weekend, Lendon Gray conducted a two-day clinic at Anne Margaret Meyer’s beautiful Cahuilla Dressage facility. Ten youth riders participated and ranged from showing intro to 3rd level riders. Lendon Gray is especially tough, but it is always so valuable to be given the opportunity to train with her. She knows exactly how to push each rider to improve regardless of what level they are riding. She has a special way of finding the simplest movement that you SHOULD be really good at, but are not. Then, she will focus on that same movement until you are riding it as well as she thinks you and your horse can at that time. For me, it was canter to walk transition, and the use of my leg aids in all my canter work- especially in the canter depart. Other GDCTA members that rode in the clinic include Skylar Skalicky, Alexis Troutman, Caroline Sype, and Palmer Jones. In addition to riding in lessons each day, there were extremely interesting lectures. On Saturday, Sofie Frontiere told the group about her experiences as a working student for top U.S. riders including Steffan Peters. She told us about both how hard-working students work, but also the opportunity to learn from the best. On Sunday morning, we had an Easter Egg Hunt, which was fun for the whole group. Peri Lambros taught us about PEMF and demonstrated on my horse, Joshua. Amanda McCoy of Allison Farms gave a lecture about trailer safety and maintenance, and Liz Malloy also talked to the group about Pony Club. My experience with Hilltoppers Pony Club has been extremely meaningful since it is how I met Anne Margaret Meyers and began leasing her horse, Joshua S. We are all so grateful for Lendon Gray, Dressage4Kids and the foundation sponsors, Cahuilla Dressage for hosting, and especially Liz Malloy for organizing the clinic and bringing Lendon to Georgia. The next D4K clinic and Youth Dressage Challenge is scheduled for September 2021. So, make sure you are signed up!

JUNIOR/YOUNG RIDER GDCTA TRAINING GRANT EXPERIENCE by Abigail Goodwin

I would like to thank you once again for selecting me for the recipient for the GDCTA JR/YR Training grant. I had the honor to train under Jill Henneberg, a 1996 American Eventer and a silver medal winner in the Olympics held at the Georgia International Horse Park. Training with Jill has helped me to become more familiar with my new horse, Simon as we worked through each phase. She has provided me with excellent advice from an experienced eventer’s perspective which has helped me as we trained through each phase. Thank you again, Jill. It was an amazing experience. It is great being a member of GDCTA.

Apply for the 2021 GDCTA Training Grant by June 1st at www.gdcta.org/training-grants
