Dearest members:
This is such a beautiful time of year. I am loving watching the landscape change color. Gorgeous! If you’re into Halloween, you’re probably getting excited as it approaches. I know I am. GDCTA just completed the regional championship show this month. It was a big project and as any event comes to a close, we may feel like taking a well-deserved rest. But hold that thought, the event wrap-up is not yet complete. We still have to spread a little gratitude around before we’re done! It takes a village to run a show and to run one smoothly you need four main support pillars – management (the organization), competitors (the reason), sponsors/vendors/advertisers (the finances) and, of course, volunteers (the execution). A special note for those who so generously participated in this event, Thank you! You are profoundly appreciated. In a day and age where time is a precious commodity, it's important to single out our volunteers who took time from their busy lives to help GDCTA. Volunteering takes time and energy and, to state the obvious, it's not like they got paid. We love you - our volunteers! This show couldn’t have been as successful without your involvement. Thank you so much for being there for us. In appreciation of your contribution, we held a drawing just for those who volunteered at this event. Congratulations to Sandy Gillespie for winning the $250! We have some exciting things planned to honor our volunteers coming up for next year. Stay tuned! We are taking a short break and then on to elections. Please vote when you receive your email with the link to online voting. The candidates’ bios are in this newsletter. Next up: the Adult Camp November 4-7 at Montclair Stables in Conyers. There will be a dressage focus for this Camp but it’s open to all levels. See more https://gdcta.wildapricot.org/event-4398027. Because of the big show, we are a little behind in collecting year-end awards scores from schooling shows but that will be caught up shortly and you will be asked to review what’s posted. We’ll get the scores from USDF and USEA soon and we’ll post those as soon as we can. Please check thoroughly so we can place the classes correctly. Thank you! Youth members working toward your Letterman Jackets, please get your applications in! Find the details and applications here: https://www.gdcta.org/youth-programs The November 15th Board meeting is the General Meeting which is for you, our members. We’ll hold it by Zoom and all are invited to attend. After that, we’ll host a Holiday Zoom meeting on December 13th and everyone is invited to that as well. Last year we held a holiday costume contest. Would you enjoy that again this year? Looking forward to seeing everyone at one or both of the upcoming Zoom meetings!

Find a Way to be Invested in the Community of Farriers
‘Pride doesn’t really come into it’ Despite his globetrotting competition habit, or perhaps because of it, Wells has learned to listen closely to farriers who have been in the business longer than he has, even if their experiences vary greatly from his. He values the opportunity to get together with other shoers and exchange information, and he urges his contemporaries to “find a way to be invested in the community of farriers” where they’ll be exposed to new perspectives.
Andrew Wells talks AFA team membership and the value of veteran horseshoers By ELIZABETH CRUMBLY, GPFA Newsletter Editor EGCrumbly@gmail.com This story was reprinted with permission from the Georgia Professional Farriers Association. To find out more about the organization or to locate a qualified farrier in your area, visit www.georgiafarriers.org.
“A veteran of the industry is to be respected,” he explains. “The everyday reality of being a horseshoer is just hard … After you do it long enough, you learn that pride doesn’t really come into it.”
Andrew Wells, CJF, has spent the past few years traversing the United States and flying between Canada and England to fulfill his duties during several stints on the American Farriers Association official competition team. Now that he’s been a part of what amounts to farrier Hollywood, though, he says he values community among farriers of all levels and abilities even more.
Although his intense time on the competition circuit did wonders for his learning process, he points out that clinics afford less strenuous opportunities for farriers looking to improve their skills. He recommends these educational opportunities over the weekend warriorstyle competition circuit and says competing is probably best reserved for when horseshoers have real time to devote to it.
Stepping back from a rockstar pace He acknowledges that some of his contemporaries are still competing at breakneck speed as he’s pulling onto the off ramp, but it’s just time for a break. He values his time competing, saying “it accelerated my ability to go make a living shoeing horses.”
On the other hand, clinics like the ones most state associations host “make a huge impact on your farrier business,” he says, adding that the miles and funds that go into competing don’t even matter to most clients in the long run.
At the same time, the roaring drive that kept him on the road began to dull after a time. “It meant a whole lot to me to make those teams, and once I did it, that voice started dying down in me,” he explains.
“I think you’re going to get more out of that than going to a competition,” he says. “Your shoeing business takes up a lot of your energy. If you’re not driven to do it (compete) ... then don’t worry about it. Your clients don’t care.”
If one could make the argument that farriery is glamorous, that discussion would revolve around horseshoers at the AFA team level. International travel to legendary locals is par for the course, and team members are automatically well-known in the industry. As his time as a rockstar draws to a temporary close, however, Wells says he’s coming out with a new appreciation for relationships with other members of

manner, citing himself as a default choice since other AFA team members have already put in their time judging. But the truth is that associations that make a conscientious effort to provide quality experiences are the ones recruiting him.
YOUTH CORNER Letterman Jacket Applications Due Soon!
For now, Wells is adjusting to a slightly more laid back lifestyle, but goals are never far off his horizon, and he has new plans to further his caree acquaintances earn their Associate level diplomas from

had a rest, he might begin working toward that certification, he says.

Andrew Wells, CJF, began his career shoeing in Colorado
Youth Board
School in Minco, Oklahoma, in 2010. By 2015, he had moved to Auburn, Alabama, and the hooves he began caring for were different, to say the least.
The Youth Board has been dissolved. Instead, there will be a Youth member on the Board of Directors who will come to the regular Board meetings (via Zoom). The Board will choose the Youth member based on their email of application. To be considered, email Joanne Morse joannemorse1@ yahoo.com with a note about why you want to be on the GDCTA Board.
Coming from the arid Rockies to the wet winters and summers of the Southeast threw him for a bit of a loop as he learned to manage the fungus-riddled, constantly spreading hoof material that is the reality for farriers in this region.
The next Board meeting is October 18 at 7:00 PM sharp on Zoom.
Once he began talking to other shoers, he realized everyone was in the same boat in terms of hoof care and other farriers had tips and war stories to share.
Contact Caren Caverly at ccaverly@comcast.net to be added to the Zoom call.

Great American Insurance Group/USDF Region 3 Dressage Championship & Atlanta National Fall Dressage October 8-10 Georgia Horse Park Conyers, GA This show featured nearly 400 horses competing in classes from Training Level to Grand Prix. GDCTA members who competed in the open show earned double scores toward the 2022 GDCTA year-end awards. A Vendor Village was held with horse supplies, boutiques, boots, and anything you could want for your closet or your horse's. The highlight was an exquisite equine art exhibit and sale organized by Ulla Strickland. Saturday night GDCTA hosted a dinner for competitors with home grown entertainment - the competitors themselves! "Ponies and Pooches" consisted of a parade of dogs (and some people) in fun costumes and a fabulous Stick Horse Musical Freestyle competition with very creative riding! Ringside was packed - everyone enjoyed the show! Classes wrapped up in the afternoon on Sunday after a beautiful weekend of stunning horses and good riding! Thank you to all the volunteers without whom we could not hold this show! We'll see you next year as GDCTA is hosting once again! Mark your calendar - October 7-9, 2021. Georgia Dressage and Combined Training Association Regular Meeting
Committee Reports • Communication (Joanne) Newsletter went out and they are working on stuff for the next Newsletter. Working on ideas like an article from somebody going to the AECs for the first time. Requesting help for going through the AEC list to figure out who of our members is competing. • Show Committee (Julie) There was a Facebook petition started regarding the footing at GA Horse Park. Motion by Caren, Carol seconded. Board made a motion to contact the USDF people to come down and look at the footing and see that it is not as bad as it is made out to be. The motion was passed by the board. There are a lot of people who have not been there in years and are still sharing info about the footing. There were people who claimed to be past employees. This was found to be false. The Park is adamant that there will not be new footing put in because it is a government-funded park. In 2019, they set off samples of the footing and then they took the advice to make the footing better. They will do this again and will follow the suggestions and get feedback from the competitors. The show manager of regionals, Joe Coleman, will be here on Thursday to look at the footing and once it is all set. Then they will be ready for people to ride in it. We will have volunteers there on Friday to ask each person when they leave the arena how the footing was. If any issues are identified, they will go in and repair. The same will be done on Saturday. Going to ask people if they were satisfied with the footing and if they are, ask them to post on Facebook. Caren talked to Lisa Gorretta about the petition to take it away from us in 2022 which cannot be done because we already have a contract with USDF. To host a regional championship, you must submit a 20page application. You submit that to the Regional Committee. They look at the application and go over each parameter to identify which place is best. We check all the boxes except for having fiber footing. Summer Finals Schooling Show is this weekend; we have about 84 entries. No western riders so these classes were canceled. Still need some volunteers for running, for the awards table, and jump crew. For the Labor Day show, we need all volunteer jobs and we need more volunteers for regionals. • Finance (Peter) A little under $600 raised by advertisement for yearbook. • Youth Program (Joanne) Joanne took over scheduling meetings because the past two months meetings have not happened due to sending the invites out. They are wanting to send a group message for the meeting which does not include the full youth membership. There were three people at the meeting. They want to do a
August 16, 2021 President Caren Caverly called the regular meeting of the GDCTA to order on August 16, 2021, at 7:05 pm on Zoom. Secretary, Ashley Boyd, performed a roll call. A quorum of the board consisting of Caren Caverly, Abigail Kroupa, Joanne Morse, Ashley Boyd, Carol Tresan, Peter West, Liz Molloy, Heather Askew, Julie Shannon, Janie Price, and Danielle Perry were present. Two guests Madison and Lindsey are here to see if they want to join the board. The minutes of the regular meeting for July 19, 2021, were emailed to board members prior to the meeting. Liz made a motion to approve the minutes. Julie seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer’s Report (Peter) Month where we spent a large amount of money on yearbook and grants. Due to it being a big month it shows $1,900 loss. Note from Caren that we need to work on getting sponsors for the yearbook, to bring the cost back down. Question from Liz asking if we could push the deadline back, because advertisers might be more likely to advertise later. Julie asked if we could add $5 for each person who is competing to pay and offset the cost. Abigail recommended reaching out to parents of youth, etc., doing congratulatory advertisements. Could we incentivize people to bring in advertisements, where they could get something like a free advertisement. Another idea is to send out forms at the Awards Gala asking them to sign up for an advertisement at that time. VP Dressage Report (Abigail) Critical right now is to get more volunteers for the championships. If everybody could reach out to people and ask them to volunteer. VP Combined Training (Joanne) Kim Severson clinic is coming up next month. Working on finalizing details for the clinic. Using the website for payment is a learning curve. The clinic should turn a small profit. Membership Report (Mary Lou) Nothing to report

polo shirt fundraiser but have a plan to do it. This weekend is the youth pizza party. Who oversees ordering pizza and getting plates and napkins? Several of the members will not be able to make it. There were only very few people on the call, so it was difficult to get people to be at the event. Discussion about passing the committee chair to another person. Discussion about whether the party should move forward if the youth committee will not be there. Julie recommended canceling the party or hosting the party and trying to recruit a new board. Julie motioned. Caren seconded canceling the pizza party. Board voted to cancel it. Liz motioned to cancel the fundraiser class, and Julie seconded it. The board voted to cancel the fundraiser class. Liz made a motion to disband the current youth board and reorganize, Joanne seconded it. Discussion about having the Youth Board have the same set of parameters as our board as far as attendance is concerned. One girl has been at the meeting since it started. Board voted to disband the current board and start again. Dressage4Kids clinic is full. • Awards (Janie) The grant recipients have their info to track and report to the board about how they used the grant. • Education (Julie) nothing to report now • Nominating (Julie & Danielle) Lindsey and Madison expressed interest in being on the board. They are on the Zoom tonight to learn more. Must know who is running by September so we can get their bio. Old Business

Labor Day Classic show. We have not gotten a bill from Wills Park. A lot went wrong at the Summer Finals show. The concession stand was closed so they got a food truck, however, it was late. They are supposed to give credits for volunteer lunches. There was a mix up of dates, so the covered arena was supposed to be free of charge. It was well attended with about 90 Entries. The Labor Day show was the following weekend. It was well attended as well with about 90 Entries. Regional entries just closed. We have approximately 380 entries for Regionals. Nobody came down from USDF to look at the footing/venue at the Labor Day show. Caren and Peri looked at all of the arenas and showed the Georgia Horse Park what needed to be fixed. They identified issues and the Horse Park went in and fixed the issues. Friday night, a lady came in to comment on arenas. She has had horses show in all regions and she said that there was no reason why anybody wouldn’t want to show here, that the footing was good and that the GDCTA has done an excellent job. She gave her opinion back to the GDCTA that there is no reason why Regionals should not be held there. Saturday, there was an issue with computers. The scribe looked at the tests as they were completed, however, after the fact she looked back and the test was completely gone. Caren called FoxVillage to get assistance, but they did not call back for 3 hrs. The test score was recreated from a video. Due to this technical issue and no support, we will not do paperless at the Regional Championships. Caren is going to look into other computer program options for the future. Then on Saturday at the end of the day, the GDCTA received notification the USDF would be doing a compliance inspection on Sunday. The person sent was looking at the footing and the facility. The inspection went in our favor. Improvements recommended were to have hoses at the wash racks; however, those are not allowed under the COVID protocol. Another suggestion was to blow up the facility picture so people could see where to go. The main thing for Regionals is filling volunteer positions that are in yellow on the spreadsheet. If board members are not signed up for something, please sign up for a job. We normally have all classes sponsored, we have about 5 or 6 classes left to be sponsored. The Championship classes are $50 and regular classes are $25. To sponsor a class, you just need to go on Wild Apricot and you can pay online. It needs to be done by the 26th to get in the program. Don’t have entertainment set up for Saturday night. It looks like we will have dinner. There will be a vendor party Friday night with a guitar player. Thursday night there will be an event in the barn area. • Finance (Peter) Nothing new to add at the moment. Julie is working on getting sponsors.
September 20, 2021 President Caren Caverly called the regular meeting of the GDCTA to order on Sept 20, 2021 at 7:05 pm on Zoom. Secretary, Ashley Boyd, performed a roll call. A quorum of the board consisting of Caren Caverly, Abigail Kroupa, Joanne Morse, Ashley Boyd, Carol Tresan, Peter West, Liz Molloy, Heather Askew, Julie Shannon, Janie Price, and Danielle Perry were present. Guests Lindsey Burns, Nicole Andrews-Kees were present to see if they are interested in joining the board. The minutes of the regular meeting for August 16, 2021, were emailed to board members prior to the meeting. Julie Shannon made a motion to approve the minutes. Abigail Kroupa seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer’s Report (Peter) Showing a loss for the month which is due to the arenas that were purchased. Without that asset purchase, there’s an approximate $1000 loss for the month. VP Dressage Report (Abigail) Getting last-minute sponsors and volunteers for Regional Championships. Many people don’t realize there are reasonable sponsorships for the classes. VP Combined Training (Joanne) We had our Kim Severson Clinic last weekend. It was very well attended. Everyone had a great time. Kim was great and a huge thank you to The Towns for the facility. We ended up with a profit from the clinic. Membership Report (Mary Lou) No report for September of 2020 so compared to 2019, we are only down one member. We are down specifically in adult amateur memberships in Eventing. Joanne mentioned we could be down in that area because some people may have swapped from amateur to professional. Committee Reports • Communication (Joanne) Newsletter went out. Joanne wrote an article about the Kim Severson Clinic. • Show Committee (Julie) Since last meeting, there have been two horse shows -- the Summer Finals and

Next meeting is October 18 at 7:00 PM sharp on Zoom.
• Youth Program (Joanne) Discussion about sending out a report that the Youth Committee will be revamped. Sending a more in-depth explanation about what is involved and how to conduct it. Discussion of needing a room mom to help monitor the group. Suggestion from guest Lindsey Burns of having there be two Youth members on the Board who have to come to the main Board meeting. To be picked, you would write a letter about why you want to be picked. Caren made a motion that we have two Junior members come on to the Board and write a letter to be considered. The Board will vote on who joins. Abigail seconded the motion. The Board voted to approve the motion. • Grants (Janie) Will be getting a note out to training grant winners reminding them of their obligations. • Education (Julie) Nothing to report • Nominating (Julie & Danielle) Several people Madison, Nicole, and Lindsey are at the meeting to listen and learn about being on the board. Caren is running for president again. Joanne and Abi are running for VPs of their disciplines. Peter for Treasure. Carol and Ashley for Secretary. There are 6 nominations for Board Members at Large and 3 will be elected. Elections will be at the November General Membership Meeting. Results will be announced at the November meeting.

Discussion regarding Awards Gala for 2021. Do we hold a Gala with 450 people in the room? Or do we have it and limit the number of people? Discussion of how to make it best. Potentially doing a combo of in person and live stream. Discussion of lowering the number of tickets and having it so when it sells out it sells out. Decision was made to think about it and discuss it at the next meeting.
