the 3rd Monday to discuss and vote on the affairs of the organization. Board memberships are not set up to be permanent positions; the positions have terms set up for board members – one year for each Officer and two years for each Director. A board consists of an odd number of individuals so that there will be a majority in close votes. The job of the board is to oversee the "big-picture" operation of the club. The board officers include the president, two vice presidents who are experts their discipline, a treasurer, and two secretaries – one for recording and the other for correspondence. The Board of Directors are all making dressage and eventing more accessible to the public, breaking down boundaries, and helping to create a thriving riding community for all of us. We’d like to reintroduce the 2017 GDCTA Board: President - heads up the board and supervises all of the business and affairs of the board.

Caren Caverly has been the leading force at GDCTA for seven years. Caren has served on the GDCTA Board for the past seven years as well as being the Chairperson for Insurance and the Annual Awards Gala Committees. As President, I would like to see GDCTA host more educational seminars and junior activities. We also hope to continue the glowing success of the Awards Gala. My personal goal is to make GDCTA the best GMO in the country – the one every other GMO looks to as the example of how things are done! Rounding out the board are the directors: Ken Berry Rebecca Bowman Carla Jimmerson - is an event rider from Alpharetta Ga. and owns her own boarding barn. She has bred Connemara ponies and currently competes on her home bred pony at Training level. She was lucky enough to have been born and raised in Ocala, Fla. and raised on a farm and has always been around horses. She hopes to be of service to GDCTA as a board member and help out any way she can. Susan Collins - Susan is an amateur rider who fell in love with dressage several years ago when one of her horses had a hoof injury that ended his jumping career. That horse got to third level before being semi-retired to enjoy life as a pleasure horse, and Susan is now bringing a dressage-bred young horse up through the levels. As sponsorship chair for the GDCTA, Susan developed the Presenting Sponsor arrangement with Wilsun Custom Horse Clothing and arranged for the club’s members to enjoy a 15% discount on their wonderful line of custom products and exclusive European equipment. Professionally, Susan has many years of experience as a marketing and product development executive. She now leads the healthcare & life science division of a large global software firm and looks forward to continuing to support the club with some modern marketing and relationship management tools

to help keep members informed and engaged. Erin McCloud - Erin Lea McCloud is a USDF Bronze and Silver medalist. She is also a graduate of the "L" Program with distinction. She runs a training facility out of Powder Springs, Peach State Dressage. Erin is currently bringing her horse Veyron up the levels. He is her daily reminder of her passion and love for this sport and lifestyle. In January 2017, Erin Lea was voted on as a board member and is excited to be involved directly with GDCTA. She also rolled out the Letterman Jacket Program, Dressage Seat Medal Final, and created a Youth Committee for education events and fund raising. Additionally, boards may, of their own volition, create subcommittees to advise the full board on certain aspects of the club’s operation.  Continues on page 10

to the 3 GDCTA members who will be representing Region 3 in the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships in Saugerties, New York, July 18-23, 2017. NAJYRC is the only FEI championship of its kind on this continent. Young equestrians ages 14-21 vie for FEI medals in the Olympic equestrian disciplines of Dressage, Show Jumping, Eventing, and Para-Olympic Dressage. Long time GDCTA members Juliet Hess, Caroline Garren, and Marline Syribeys have been selected to compete in the Junior & Young Rider Dressage categories. Their trainers Karen Lipp and Anneliese Vogt-Harber will be supporting them at the competition. We wish them safe and successful rides!

An organization may also have an election committee to oversee the annual board elections. GDCTA does! Rebecca Bowman is the Chair of that committee and is currently looking for individuals who are passionate about expanding the dressage and eventing communities within Georgia and are interested in joining the GDCTA board. Contact her at gallop766@aol.com. There is generally no limit on the types or number of subcommittees that a board may create. It is important to recognize, however, that the committees may not, themselves, take actions on behalf of the organization or its members. Rather, the subcommittee will simply recommend actions to the board, who, in turn, will make decisions and commitments. The GDCTA Board enjoys hearing from our members with feedback, questions, and ideas. If you would like to present an idea at a board meeting, contact Caren Caverly ccaverly@comcast.net to be placed on the meeting agenda. HINTS: Boards are concerned with strategy for reaching their goals. Questions, which may start the minute you stand up, are the driving force of board meetings. Keep your message vibrant and meaningful for the audience. A board doesn't like to be bored any more than anyone else does.
