Team Should Contend For Playoff Position

Silsbee VB team has size...lacks experience The Silsbee Lady Tigers volleyball team has plenty of size but they must work on bonding as a team before they will be a championship caliber unit. Coach Lindsay Leach says she is hoping that the girls will be up to the challenge and they will come together as a unit prior to the start of district play. There are actually four threeyear starters and the Libero

returning off last year’s team. The Libero is a player who normally plays in only the back row. She can be freely substituted for any of the other players as they rotate through the back row. Gretchen Stancil is one of the Tigers leaders and she fills the role of the Libero. She is a 5-foot-3 senior. The other starters who are returning include Yancy Burns, a

5-10 senior middle blocker, Katelyn Alexander, a 5-9 senior outside blocker and Kolbie Kruft, a 5-6 senior setter. Erin Watson is new to the varsity this year. She is a 6-4 junior middle blocker. She will be joined by Ashley Waters, a 5-10 junior utility player, Keanu Adams, a 5-7 outside hitter, Keadra Bonner, a 5-4 defensive specialist, Katie Johnson, a 5-8

right side hitter, Lexie Thomas, a 5-5 outside hitter and Halun Harris, a 5-7 right side hitter. All of the girls are seniors except Harris who is a junior. Coach Leach is pretty confident that the girls can be molded into a competitive squad. However she says you can’t be too optimistic because the district is extremely tough. She views Orangefield as having the most

talent returning to action this year but sees Bridge City and Hamshire-Fannett as being extremely tough. She noted that Miranda Thornton is the new coach at Hardin-Jefferson and feels they will have a top notch club.

They are very competitive. It helps to have that. They are fantastic and very coachable. I have a group of ten girls who come from good families. Their parents

tend to stand behind the program and they are like a big family.” Hollyfield is assisted by a group of people including Tasha Adams, her dad Dave Pattarozzi,

Camilla Howard, Bethany Bertrand, Brooke Tanton and Megan Force. According to Hollyfield, for most of the people in the program the sport is not just a game.

It is not a job. It is something fun to be around and enjoy. The end result is that there are not many schools around where the girls work as hard as they do at Evadale.

Middle row: (l-r) Halun Harris, Shelby Keefer, Kolbie Kruft and Keauna Adams. Front row: (l-r) Keadra Bonner, Gretchen Stancil and Lexie Thomas.

SPORTS INJURY?

The Silsbee cross country team has been out running, but they have not got their team assembled. They have two varsity runners returning from last year, Tony Hart and D.J. Foster. Both of the runners went to regionals and have a lot of experience. In addition, the team had a runner move in who is a transfer from Bridge City and ran on the Bridge City varsity team. That is Brock Jones. Coach Jason Sanders anticipates that he will help the team a lot. There are two new runners on the team. Brandon Harris and Christian Foster. Coach Sanders thinks that more kids will report out at the start of school but the ones who have been running at 7:30 every morning have an advantage over them. At the present time there is one girl, Madilyn Bever, running with the team. Sanders says that he will soon have a new roster and hopefully a new schedule that will appear in the paper at a later date.

The 2011 Evadale Lady Rebels Varsity Volleyball team.

Lady Rebels are a power in Class A Volleyball circles The Evadale Lady Rebels are a perennial power in Class A volleyball. They have been under the direction of Coach Debbie Holleyfield off and on since 1996. Every year they play a host of AA and AAA clubs in pre-district play and none of the teams take the Class A school for granted because they are a power, not only in Class A, but in high school volleyball in general in the area. This year the club has three returning seniors who are all starters. The rest of the varsity is juniors, so the team appears to be strong not only this year but in the following year. The club has set a goal to finish with an unbeaten record in district play. Last year they finished district play with one loss. Coach Holleyfield also feels that the squad has a shot at advancing through the area round and make it to the regionals or even the state tournament. The returning starters from last year include junior Brittane Rawls, 5’ 7”,who was the sitter last year. Seniors Brianne Doyen, 5’ 7”, and Hope Richardson, 5’ 7”, are the returning outside hitters. Holly Stringer,5’ 9”, came off the bench last year and played on the outside. This year she will be playing middle. The rest of the players came from the JV team. The biggest surprise for Hollyfield is the middle blocker, Kennedy Jackson, 5’8”, who moved up from the JV team. She

is pretty powerful. Coach Hollyfield describes her as a strong, aggressive blocker on the net who is going to be a lot of help. The coach believes that she will be the missing link that will propel the club forward this year. Hollyfield is confident about the squad because most of the girls played summer league in Silsbee. They went to a team camp and looked good from the get-go in practice. The work that the girls did in the summer should go a long way towards helping them have success this fall. The idea of playing mostly 2-A and 3-A teams in the preseason is to push the squad so that when district rolls around they are ready for the 1-A brack-

et. The idea has worked like clockwork in the past and this appears to be a banner year. Hollyfield says, “We get a lot of good competition. We go to tournaments at schools that are bigger than us and we hang with them. We tend to play hard teams at the beginning and not worry about the record.” She continued on, “I have a very competitive group that likes to win. They know we are working on things in the preseason, but they still like to give their all and try to win. When we drop a match they are all right with it as long as we lose well.” The thing is that Evadale sel See Rebs on PG. 31 SEC. 3

Drill Team Numbers are Up From Last Year

Silsbee High School Drill team ready to KICK The Silsbee High School Tigerettes have just one senior but she is one of whom they are very proud. Sara Fisher is a gregarious young lady who is confident her team can achieve something special this year. “I am looking forward to an amazing year,” she said. “They (the dancers) are willing girls who are willing to work together and grow as a team.” Unlike many of the girls who join the team with no dance experience, Sara had years of experience prior to joining the Tigerettes. And now she has been on the squad for four years and is the captain of the team. During the process she has earned All-America status three times. She has earned the status in the past for her dance routine and also for her kick routine. This year she qualified in both routines. She first became interested in being a Tigerette while attending football games and watching her friend’s sister compete with the squad. There were 600 girls at the camp and only 10 qualified as All-Americans. Two of them were off the 17-member squad at Silsbee High School. Lauren Keubbodeaux, a lieutenant on the squad, also qualified as an All-American. Keubbodeaux has two older sisters who were Tigerettes, Alisha graduated in 2006 and Regina in

2008. While they were working on their routines she would watch and see how to do the routines and work went. Now she is one of only two juniors on the squad, is an All-

American and has a strong knowledge of what she is attempting to learn. “I like that I can trust the team members and that they have grown together,“ she said.

She says she like everything about the Tigerettes and especially likes Friday nights. She is active in several other activities at the school. She is in FCCLA and has participated in

Student Council activities. Sara is also a multi-talented young lady. She is in the Arts Club and has won Best of Show at the Houston Livestock Show during both her sophomore and junior years. She is a Texas Dance Educators Association all-state performer and ranks ninth in her class. She placed second in the soloist competition at the dance competition during her sophomore year. She attends Journey Community Church in Lumberton where she is a part of their youth group. Her instructors are quick to comment that she can play the piano beautifully. While the two All-Americans took dance lessons for years before joining the Tigerettes, many of the other girls did not enjoy that experience. The other officers on the team include Sgt. DISTRICT 21-3A Predictions

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

There should be three-team race for the district championship is District 21-3A. West Orange-Stark, with four offensive and eight defensive starters, seems to be the perennial favorite for the championship. The Mustangs have a new coach who has a familiar face in Cornel Thompson. He has been on the staff for many years and has a 12-8 record as a coach in other locations. Last year the Mustangs advanced to the bidistrict round of Division II before being eliminated. Thompson has installed a Multiple-I offense. It will be led by junior Jimmy Salter who was the Offensive Most Valuable Player of 21-3A last year. He completed 74 of 131 passes for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 41 times for 160 yards. Senior running back Britton Lindsey had 105 carries for 846 yards and 11 touchdowns. The offensive line is led by Ian Jenkins, Dylan Brackens, Ryan Allen, Terrance Dennis and Matthew Lackey. The team runs a 50 defense and is known as the Chain Gang. It has eight starters returning. The defense is headed by 21-3A Newcomer of the Year Joe Lynch who plays linebacker and nose guard, Lawrence Gimore, and linebacker Daniel Woodson. The secondary is headed by Taywaun Lucas.

THE SILSBEE BEE FALL SPORTS SPECIAL SECTION 2011

The chief adversaries of the Mustangs will be the Silsbee Tigers and the Bridge City Cardinals. The Tigers are led by Coach Bobby McGallion who has a record of 69-72 in Silsbee and 142-106-3 overall. His teams run a Spread offense and a 3-4 defense. Bridge City has seven offensive and eight defensive starters returning off a 7-4 squad that was a Division II Bidistrict finalist. This team is powered by quarterback Matt Menard, a 6-1, 205pound powerhouse who passed for 1,450 yards and 15 touchdowns last year. He also rushed the ball 1,050 yards and 18 touchdowns. Cameron Dishon, Tyler Roberts and Mitchell Hubbard return at the receiver positions. If any of the top three teams slip up, the Orangefield Bobcats will be ready to step into the limelight and the playoff picture. Brian Huckabay coached this squad to a 7-3 record and he has hopes they will take the next step. Huckabay will be entering his third season at Orangfield. He is an experienced coach with an overall record of 99-99-3. The Bobcats have four offensive and seven defensive starters returning from last year’s team. The team runs a Wing-T offensive set. The offense is led by Rylan Cook who had 42 carries for 279 yards and four touchdowns in 2010 and Justin Bradley who had 10 carries for

63 yards. The Bobcats defense is led by Jake Best, a second team all-district pick. The linebackers would be led by senior Jeremy Watkins and the secondary will be strong with Cook, a second team all-district pick, and Eric Truncate. Hamshire-Fannett has struggled on the gridiron in recent years but they may be ready to challenge in some games this year. Coach Don Price, who has an

Section 3, Page 27

overall record of 106-67-1, has had a chance to get his program in place and he now has a team with seven offensive starters returning to run his Multi-spread offense. The squad is led by Dante Smith who completed 51 of 124 passes for 516 yards and four touchdowns. His top receiver, Trevor Bell, caught 37 passes for 448 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively the team runs a 34 scheme and will have seven

starters returning. Their strength is in their linebacker corps where Sam Huff, Tanner McInnis and Jarrod Brown all return. Hardin-Jefferson finished last year with a 2-8 record. They were 1-5 in district. This year the team has 14 starters returning off the 2010 squad. Coach David Martel has an overall record of 19-40. The team will run a Multiple Pro-Spread offense. Seven starters return on offense.

Darrian Turk spings for big yardage when a block by #48 sets him free to run around the corner. Many of the players wore different jerseys in the scrimmage and it is hard to identify who made the block.

Horned Frogs are still good but not as good as last year

TCU Was The Top Team In Texas In 2010 Last year TCU was the strongest of any school in Texas. They finished last year with a perfect 12-0 record and defeated Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl by a 21-19 score which left them ranked second in the national standings. This year they may not be as strong. However, they have five starters returning on offense and six starters returning defense. This will be their final year

before heading to play in the Big East Conference. Despite the losses to graduation TCU, will once again have a fine defense. They have two defensive lineman, Stansly Maponga and D.J. Yendrey returning and all three linebackers return. The big drawback for TCU in this area may be that the linemen are a little small. This team should have a shot at repeating. Their biggest road-

blocks will be Oct 28 against BYU and Nov. 12 at Boise State. The University of Houston finished the 2010 campaign with a 5-7 record. They won the western division of Conference USA and should have the people in place to show improvement. They have seven returning starters including three wide receivers, a runningback and quarterback Case Keenum. If the line is rebuilt, the team figures to rock and roll offensively. Defensively, the team returns six starters include the entire front three. They also have three linebackers returning. The team will have to find four new defensive backs. The squad opens with UCLA, which will be a test and then all of their other games are easily winnable. This team could have an impressive record by the end of the season. They are hoping to do well so that they can impress people in case an opening occurs in the Big 12. The Rice Owls finished the 2010 campaign with a 4-8 record. This year on offense they have seven starters returning plus Vance McDonald. McDonald is a graduate of East Chambers in Winnie. He started most of the year at tight end and then was injured. This year they have moved him to wide receiver which is amazing. He is 6’5” tall and weighs 260 pounds. That makes him a pretty big wide receiver for defensive backs to cover. He may be the best player

on the offensive team. Defensively the squad has seven players returning. Josh Skinner, a 2009 graduate of Silsbee High School is second on the depth chart at defensive end. Rice plays an extremely tough non-conference schedule which hurts their overall record. The team plays Texas, Purdue, Baylor and Southern Mississippi to start the season. Later they take on Northwestern. A win in any of those games would indicate real progress. After that they play their Conference USA schedule and most of these games are winnable. Houston may be the biggest challenge in the non-district schedule. SMU was given the death penalty, put in the grave and buried many years ago. They have never fully recovered from that event. After laying off a few years they had to start over and took on the image of a loser and have never been able to overcome that stigma. Last year the team had an impressive 7-7 record under Coach June Jones. This year the team has nine offensive starters and eight

defensive starters returning. This may be the year they put it all behind them. Offensively they are missing just one offensive lineman and one wide receiver. Defensively they are missing two linebackers and a cornerback. They open the year with Texas A&M and play TCU on Sept. 30. They should be competitive in all of the other games. UTEP finished the 2010 campaign with a 6-7 record. This year they return one offensive starter and eight defensive starters. The team has a relatively weak non-conference schedule and should win a few games. They probably will not win many at the end of the year. The Mean Green from North Texas picked up a new coach during the season last year. They won only three games and all three of these were in the Sunbelt conference. This year the squad has six offensive starters and six defensive starters returning. Three wins would probably be a successful season for them again this year.

Sooners favorite in Big 12 Race Every Year Could Be The Last For the Big 12

The Texas Longhorns have played for the national championship twice in the past ten years. Two years ago they were next to the last team standing. Last year, they fell off the perch and limped to the end of the season with a 57 record. This year the red team from Oklahoma was one of the preseason favorites to win the national championship. A string of injuries and other problems this summer may have

280 Hwy. 418 Silsbee

shaken that prediction. Still, the Sooners will be one of the top teams in the country. Texas A&M may be the sleeper who steps forth to win the Big 12 title this year. The Aggies have been making noise about moving to the Southeast Conference. Last year it was Nebraska that was leaving and they made a big push to win the title and take it to the Big 10. Everyone wants to quit with the title.

Dr. Doyce Cartrett Jr. Sandra Ernst, FNP

Sooner or later some team will quit, call all the others losers and walk away with the title. It just might happen this year. The Aggies have ten starters returning on offense. This includes the quarterback, all the receivers and every offensive lineman besides one. In addition, the running back who started for the Aggies last year, Cyrus Gray, the guy who started the year before but was injured last year, and he has returned to action.

386-1200

That guy is well known to people in this area. It is Christine Michael of Beaumont. Four of the starters on the offensive unit are multi-year starters. In addition, the kicker and punter return. Defensively, the team has nine starters returning on defense. Three of the defensive starters are multi-year starters. The coaching staff certainly has something to work with. The Aggies leading rusher is Gray with 1,133 yards. Safety Trent Hunter leads the defense, but Coryell Judie had four interceptions last year when the Aggies finished at 9-4. If the Sooners had not had so many problems this year, they would have been in almost as good a shape as the Aggies, with even better personnel managing the slots. The Sooners have nine starters returning on offense, including quarterback Landry Jones. Every starter returns except one wide receiver and the running back. Defensively, the Sooners have six starters returning. The middle linebacker, Travis Lewis, is a multi-year starter and owns the Oklahoma record for career interceptions. There are three multiyear starters on offense. The Sooners are really good. Landry Jones completes two-thirds of his passes and has passed for 38 touchdowns and 4,718 yards. Ryan Broyles caught 131 passes for 1,622 yards. But Sooners are still an extremely young team. It is hard to improve on 12-2 but the Sooners might do it. If they do, they might have an invite to the big dance. Oklahoma State has nine returning starters. They are led by their quarterback, Brandon Weeden, who completed 343 passes for 4,277 yards. His lead receiver is Justin Blackmon, who caught 111 passes for 1,782 yards. Defensively, the Cowboys have six starters returning. The strength of the defense is the secondary, which returns three of the four starters.

The Cowboys finished the year last year at 11-2 and this year should be just as good, if not better. Baylor finished the year last year with a record of 7-4 and this year they have eight starters returning and five of these are multi-year starters. The Bears leader is Robert Griffin III, who would be the top returning starter in the conference if Landry Jones was not on the Oklahoma campus. Defensively, five starters return for Baylor. Defensively the Bears will not be growling quiet so much. They have just three starters returning off of last year’s team. Cornerback Chance Casey and Tracy Robertson at defensive tackle are both multi year starters. Last year, Texas Tech had a new coach and a big year . They finished the year at 8-5. The Raiders have six starters returning on offense and three starters returning on defense. The guess here is that they will not win as many games as they did a year ago. The big school in the conference, Texas, finished the year last year with a record of 5-7. They have six starters returning and apparently some of them are not very good starters. Coach Mack Brown has the team in seclusion this year as they prepare for the 2011 campaign. The word leaking out of the closed practices are that he is looking at freshman David Ash as the quarterback. Look for Texas to have a major makeover. The campus is located in the heart of the state that has the best high school football players in the nation and annually produces the top backs in the country. Still, the team has limped through several years with less than sterling years from its running back position. The school that had feature backs like Earl Campbell, Steve Wooster, Ricky Williams and many others has not had a feature back in years. Don’t be surprised if they unleash one on everyone this year. Squad has 72 Players Ready For Action

Band hopes to maintain Sweepstakes Tradition The Silsbee High School Band that has won sweepstakes awards the past four years will take the field this year with one of the youngest squads in many seasons. There are 72 students in the band under the direction of John Roberts and assistant Todd Patterson. In order to be a sweepstakes band the group must earn a 1 rating in marching, concert and sight reading and the SHS team has managed to accomplish this feat four straight times. Roberts reports that the band is now working hard, practicing on the field south of the school each morning from 8 to 11 a.m. and then returning each afternoon to practice music in the band hall.

He describes this group as very hard working kids with positive attitudes. They are very young and the group has a lot of flute saxophone and trumpet players and is a little light at some of the other positions. This year they plan to perform on the field for a show known as Nightwatch. Roberts installs part of the show to open the season and continues to add parts as the year proceeds. By the time the marching competition arrives the show is fully in place and the whole show is performed. This year the band will have two senior drum majors. Tim Whitt was a drum major last year and Mone’t Randolph joins him as one of the leaders of the band. Whitt is the first chair baritone

player and Randolph is the first chair clarinet player. The drum majors attended a camp at Stephen F. Austin State University and also participated in a two-day leadership camp at SHS. This year’s highlight will take place during the school term. Last year the band travelled to Disneyworld. The group does this every three years. Now, for the next two years, they will raise money for the next trip. One of the big things that people can look forward to this year

is that the band will have a new look. They now have new uniforms and are working hard to have them fitted to the personnel in the band. At picture time many of the pants had still not been trimmed and stitched for the legs of the new performers. Roberts says that the life of a band uniform is between 10 and 15 years. They have been working on the uniforms for the past year. First designs had to be studied and then sketches made which were taken to the school for approval. Finally the band

uniforms were ordered. The whole process takes about a year. Now the uniforms have arrived and the finishing process is underway. Asst. Director Patterson’s wife Carol will be in charge of the color guard. Roberts has been the director at SHS for the past eight years. He is confident that this young group has a great attitude and that they will work hard to put a good show on the field every week of the season.

BIG 12

With all that said and done look for Oklahoma to win the south division of the Big 12 with A&M being their nearest competitor. Texas will spring forth to place third and put fear in the hearts of A&M. Oklahoma State will be fourth, with Baylor fifth and Texas Tech last. Well, that won’t happen because there is no longer a Big 12 South. Nebraska and Colorado are gone. The other four teams from the Big 12 North are now a part of the Big 12. Missouri has nine offensive starters returning and six defensive starters returning. They should be given some consideration for being in the race for the title. Look for Missouri to finish fifth in the ten team field. That is right after Oklahoma, A&M, Texas and Oklahoma State. Kansas State has had good years and bad years. Last year they had a middle year with a 76 record. They have six offensive and seven defensive starters returning. The Wildcats probably will be in the middle of the pack. Look for them to claim wins over Eastern Kentucky, Kent State, Miami, Kansas and Iowa State. Miami is in bad shape with an NCAA investigation going on that figures to be devastating. paying players for hits on opponents does not set well with the elite in the NCAA. Rumors are that they could lose as many as 12 starters for the year, which makes them a candidate for several unexpected losses. Two conference wins will leave K State in eighth place. Kansas finished last year with a record of 3-9. The have seven offensive and eight defensive starters returning. Wins over Mcneese State, Northern Illinois

and Iowa State will leave the Jayhawks in ninth place in a ten team league. This leaves only one team. Iowa State finished last year with a record of 5-7. They have only five staters returning on offense and seven starters returning on defense. The Cyclones should open the season with a win over Northern Iowa. From this point on nothing looks good. An eleven loss season is a possibility.

SFA’s three and 43 in the coaches’ poll, while SFA had four and 44 to McNeese’s two and 43 in the SIDs’ poll. “This is my fourth time here at Media Day, but it will be our first full-fledged season as a contending member of the league,” said Woodard, who greeted 22 returning starters when team members report for fall training camp on Aug. 2. “Of course, we’re tremendously excited about that, but, hopefully, it won’t be like that (in reference to the eighth-place predictions) when the season is over. “Having played four of our first five games against schools from the conference last season (SFA and Sam Houston State were the others) gave us a good idea of what we’re getting into this year.” McNeese head coach Matt Viator stressed the overall strength of the conference in giving his assessment of the two polls, as did Northwestern State boss Bradley Dale Peveto, son of the late Ed Peveto, who played his college football at Lamar in the late 1950s before becoming a longtime Southeast Texas high school coach. “We’re happy to be picked first in one poll and second in the other, but look at the two teams that finished at the bottom of the polls (SLU and Lamar),” said Viator. “We barely won our games against those teams last year, edging each one of them by a field goal.” “You’re not going to get an easy game in this league, and you’re not going to outcoach anyone,” said Peveto. “You had better be prepared to get it on every week. We’ll have our hands full in every game. “I hate to make my picks in this poll every year. It’s going to

Mark Murril played in all 11 games at Lamar last year as a red-shirt freshman. He enjoyed the team’s success but views the 2010 success in a much different light than other people. Now the 6-foot-2, 250-pound sophomore has a hold on a starting position at Lamar and he is giving every effort to not only maintain that position as a starting defensive tackle but also to lead the team to a conference championship. He says, “Everyone wants to do better. No one likes to lose games. We want to do better. A lot of us felt we should have won a couple more games last year if not all of them.” For Murrill the highlight of the season was the McNeese game that was Lamar’s first game on the field after a more than 20 year layoff. This year he feels, “Now we get to play for a ring. We adopted a goal of winning a conference championship and no one will say anything different. Last year

it was exciting starting a new program. This year is different. Everyone is closer this year. The team only lost two players and everyone got a chance to see how we play and work together. “ His assessment of the preseason workout is that all is going well. Last year Murrill not only played in all 11 games as a freshman but he seemed to get stronger as the season drew to a close. He had 20 tackles during the season including three for losses. He recovered a fumble with fifty seconds to play to preserve Lamar’s 29-28 win over Southeastern Louisiana. During that game he had two tackles including one for a loss. His top game was in the Cardinals season opener against Webber International when he had five tackles. Twice he had four tackles in a game. These were in a 14-0 win over Langston and in a 44-6 win over Oklahoma Panhandle.

Murrill graduated from Lumberton High School where he was a first team All-District 20-4A players as a senior and an honorable mention selection on the 2008 Class 4A All-State team. He had 50 tackles including three for sacks and 13 others for losses during that senior campaign. Murrill is majoring in engineering and is the son of Mark and Mary Murrill of Lumberton.

Simply put, Lamar University’s team is the Rodney Daingerfield of the Southland Conference. As the legendary comedian/actor would have so aptly said it, the Cardinals got no respect in the 2011 Preseason SLC Polls released Wednesday at the league’s annual Football Media Day. Also, the Cardinals had no player named to the first or second-team offensive or defensive units as voted upon by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. Coach Ray Woodard’s Cardinals, who will be competing for the SLC football championship this season for the first time since 1986 (Lamar played as a Division 1-AA independent for three seasons before dropping the program after the 1989 season), finished dead last in both of the preseason polls, garnering nine points in the coaches’ poll and the minimum of eight points

in the SIDs’ poll. In fact, the Cards attracted only one seventhplace vote, that being in the coaches’ poll. This came about despite the Cardinals compiling a 5-6 record and setting 15 individual or team records in 2010, their first year to field a football team since 1989. Among the Cardinals’ victims last season was Southeastern Louisiana, 29-28 in Hammond, La., and the Cards also played then 11th-ranked McNeese State down to the wire in a 30-27 road loss in their season opener. Southeastern Louisiana, which again host the Cardinals this season, finished in seventh place in both polls, while McNeese State was the top choice of the coaches and fellow defending league cochampion Stephen F. Austin headed up the SIDs’ poll. The voting was tight, however, as McNeese accumulated three first-places and 44 points to

Former SHS QB see difference in the game Cheerleaders have

Jeremy Johnson, a 2009 graduate of Silsbee High School, will take the field for the Lamar Cardinals this fall as one of the team’s quarterbacks. The journey from high school at a 3A school to quarterback at a college like Lamar can be long and tough but it was much longer for Johnson than an 18-mile trip to Beaumont. Johnson was one of the toprated quarterbacks in the state when he graduated and he signed a scholarship to play at West Virginia University. Once he arrived at WVU he discovered there was a big difference between high school and college and he faced a daily challenge attempting to learn the playbook and to develop his skills to be able to play at the college level. He had to get more mentally

involved in the game. He had to change his style to work on staying in the pocket and getting his footwork right. It has been a steady job working on these details every day since he hit the college campus. Johnson is quick to say that West Virginia was challenging to him. The challenge goes on but Johnson says that now he is used to it. He did not hit the field his freshman year and that was followed by a huge turnover in players and coaching at West Virginia. He decided to leave the school. He had a chance to attend two different universities, Lamar and Baylor. Johnson says he chose Lamar over Baylor for one reason. At Baylor he would have had to sit out a year before he could play. He had already sat out one year at

West Virginia and wanted to compete for a position. He still has four years of eligibility. At Lamar the offense runs out of the Pistol Formation. This is different than in high school where they ran a spread offense. In the spread the quarterback is off the line of scrimmage with the running back to his side. In the pistol, the quarterback is directly behind the center (under center) and the running back is behind the quarterback. This offense will require the quarterback to do a little running. Johnson says he cannot tell whether the offense is geared towards a passing attack or geared towards a running attack. He sees it as being a little of both. From a physical standpoint Johnson does not see that he has changed much. He weighs 188 pounds and weighed about 180 in

high school. He says he runs a 4.35-second 40-yard dash which is about what he ran in high school. Johnson says he is real impressed with the Cardinals defense. “They are pretty good and we practice against them every day.” The practices usually have the first team offense battle the first team defense and then the second team offense battles the second team defense. Once the process is completed it is then repeated. One thing he sees improving at Lamar is the line. He says they get better every day and they have had a number of players move in who are making them bigger. He transferred to Lamar after the first semester and has had some time to get comfortable with the playbook and polishing

up on his skills. He indicated that he has been working and feels good about how he is doing. Jeremy Johnson

The Silsbee Tiger cheerleading squad has 12 varsity and seven junior varsity members. Three of the girls are National Cheerleader Association AllAmericans. The group includes team captain Alex Tanton, Natalie Turk and Kailey Colvin. Tanton is the only senior on the team. Turk and Colvin are both juniors. The team has five other girls who are returning starters from last year’s squad. They include Kali Smith, Hailey Gilder, Carley Jasken and Kirbi Anderson and they are all juniors. The other members of the varsity unit include J’Da Crawford, Ashley McGilberry, Katlyn Halvorson, Kumbrie Laurent and

Karie Carpenter. Coach Teshauna Turk has been coaching the Tigers for nine years. She says this group of girls are 100 percent dedicated to school spirit and have been working on ways to get the crowd to respond and become a part of the game. Their goal all summer has been to develop response cheers. Turk says the crowd will be impressed and surprised at the efforts the girls have made to get the crowd involved. There are only seven girls on the junior varsity squad. This group includes Vanity Hale, Taylor Roark, Hayley Jones, Jade Scott, Darian Haegon and Deliah Coker. The SHS Varsity Cheerleaders include: Back L-R:Kambrie Laurent, Karie Carpenter, Ashley McGilberry, and Katelyn Halvorson. Middle L-R: Kailey Colvin, J’da Crawford, Hailey Gilder, Carley Jassken, and Kirbi Anderson. Front L-R: Natalie Turk, Alex Tanton, and Khali Smith.

Coaches Are Working Hard To Put Talent In The Right Places

Tigers have ingredients for great season The Silsbee coaching staff has known for a long time that this is going to be a pretty good football time. Throughout the spring there was a good group of students working out, lifting weights and preparing for the season by making themselves stronger. The trend continued throughout the summer. The thought was reinforced by the fact that the squad had a strong nucleus returning in the offensive line. Prior to the start of practice coaches knew they had three starters returning plus, a huge move-up from the JV squad who not only had size but had athletic ability. From this point they were working on improving those players skills, filling the one hole at guard and developing

backup personnel for the line. This line is not only experienced, but it is big and athletic. The front liner is Bret Treadway, who has already given a verbal commitment to Lamar University. He is one of the smaller guys at 6’3” tall and 250 pounds. Doc Maricle and Zach Rashal have both started for three years. Doc started even before Treadway. He is in the 275pound class. Rachal is the little guy, yet he is a long lanky character who is athletic and weighs more than 200 pounds. These three seniors were joined by Michael Davis who is also a senior and something of a late bloomer. He runs well, and is huge at 265 pounds. He appears to be the biggest guy on the line.

All fall Dylan Morgan and Kanon Mackey have been battling for a starting spot on at the right tackle position. Morgan is a junior and appears to have the edge. Mackey is a sophomore and is the bigger of the two at nearly 240 pounds. Whichever one of the two end up starting the other is bound to see a lot of action. In addition, the team had at least three starting receivers returning from last year. Kelton Gaines is a tiny speed burner. Darrian Turk is a little bigger and about as fast. Both of the players are willing to go inside and catch the ball. They are a fine tandem on inside slot receivers. Garrett Drake is the backup quarterback. He is also the only returning member of the starting secondary. He started a number of games last year at a wide receiver position. Besides these three guys Jarrod Holmes did not live in Silsbee during football season a year ago and he is out for the sport. When he is on the field it is hard to tell the difference between him and the two inside slot receivers. Sometimes he appears to be better than they are. Coaches knew they could have a pretty good offensive unit if they could find someone to play the skill positions of quarterback and running back. It just happened there were two exceptional talents coming out of the ninth grade. Both players are bigger than normal for their position and

both have good to excellent speed. Patrick Read throws as well as any sophomore quarterback at Silsbee High School in the past 10-12 years. He is about 6’2” and weighs about 180 pounds. He is a threat to throw or run. His big disadvantage is that he is young and sometimes makes bad decisions or misses open receivers. If he sees them he has no trouble getting the ball to them. His back-up is Brandon Gore or Garrett Drake. Gore sees more action than Drake because Drake is busy in other areas but he can get the job done if he is called on. Gore is a short quarterback who can read the option and is really a pretty good runner. In the right offense he would be an ideal starter. The three players give coaches a little depth to count on. Coaches always need depth and this is especially true if sophomores are on the field. Floyd Spearman moved up from the freshman squad to the running back position. At 190+ pounds he has 4.5 speed. He runs hard and is steadily improving. Like all sophomores he has a number of areas he can improve on but the basis is in place for an outstanding player. He seems to have a second burst of speed when he steps through the line and he does not fall down easily. Silsbee has not had a big back

with his skills for many years. Spearman is not alone at the position. Several other players have been lugging the ball. Coach McGallion singled out Yancy Brydson for praise after the last scrimmage because of the way he was running hard and hitting the holes. A number of other players have been seeing spot action at the position. Defensively the team is led by Jacob Keefer. He has been manning the position every since the first game of his senior year. Coach McGallion says is the only freshman to ever start his high school career as a starter since McGallion came to Silsbee in 1998. When Keefer came onto the field as a freshman, he was a somewhat small guy for a linebacker but he had an aptitude for the position. Right off he was calling plays. Now, as a senior, he has pretty good size. He weighs 185-190. Nearly any situation that can be thrown at him has already been thrown at him. His buddy Bryan Adams plays right beside him. The two seniors give the Tigers an outstanding linebacking corp. At the start of preseason this was the strength of the defense. Silsbee had only one defensive back returning (Drake) and two defensive linemen David Holleyfield, a tackle and Dusty Thibodeaux. Coach McGallion

Media picks Lamar for last but coach knows otherwise For Lamar head coach Ray Southland Woodard, Conference Football Media Day is becoming old hat as he attended his fourth such event Wednesday at L’auberge du lac Hotel and Casino.

The day-long event gives media from across the Southland Conference the opportunity to meet and interview each school’s head coach and two selected players. For the Cardinals this year, senior defensive end Jacody Coleman and senior wide receiver Marcus Jackson represented the school. Both players, as well as Woodard, are excited about Lamar’s opportunity to compete for a Southland Conference title after spending last season as an independent in LU’s return to football following a 21-season hiatus. “We have the whole team coming back and have more depth this year,” said Jackson who led

the Cardinals with eight touchdown catches on 41 receptions in 2010. “We believe we can compete with the other Southland Conference teams, and we’re very excited that we can do something special this year.” A well-run event hosted by the Southland Conference, players and coaches are interviewed by the Southland Conference Television Network, other local television stations and assorted print and radio media. Southland commissioner Tom Burnett spoke about the value of Lamar’s return to the conference “We are very, very excited to have the Cardinals back in the conference playing a full schedule for the first time since 1986,” said Burnett. “It fill’s a hole that we’ve had since Lamar has come back to the conference. “It’s really gratifying to see how the university has brought the sport back, and made it work with all this excitement and enthusiasm. Because Lamar figured out how to make it work for

themselves first, now it’s going to work out great for the whole conference.” Woodard, Coleman and Jackson moved from station to station Wednesday, giving their respective opinions as to how the season may go, what it’s like to play in front of capacity crowds at the newly refurbished Provost Umphrey Stadium and just how tough a conference the SLC is. “This is a great football league,” commented Woodard after leading Lamar to a 5-6 record in 2010. “We are more familiar with the conference teams this year after facing four of them last year, but they will be much more familiar with us and we’re going to have to be even better this year to compete against them. “We were 4-2 at home (last season) playing in front of the large crowds,” added Woodard. “Our fans really travelled well and came out to support us, and I’m hoping that excitement grows and the stadium can get even more hostile.” Jackson added to those sentiments, noting that “the Golden Triangle is a great place for football and you can really feel how much they love the sport in the area.” Coleman offered a unique perspective at media day, after spending his first two collegiate seasons playing for the University of Iowa in the Big 10 Conference before returning to his hometown to help the Cardinals build a program. “It’s been a great journey to be playing back at home in front of family,” said Coleman who was a prep star at West Brook High School. “They didn’t have the chance to see me that often in

Iowa, but now they can be at every game. It makes me happy to bring football back to Lamar where it belongs.” Also announced Wednesday were the preseason polls and preseason all-conference teams. The Cardinals, who were not represented on any of the preseason all-conference squads, were also selected eighth by the coaches in the eight-team league. Of no matter to Woodard who knows that it’s not where you are picked to start the season, but rather where you finish the year.

There has been a lot of experimentation on the defensive side of the ball and it continues. Two things established itselve right off. First, Seth Adams, a sophomore showed up and it was understood that he could play with anyone in the middle of the line. He is Bryan’s younger but bigger brother. He is a little shorter but weighs about 250 pounds and has the strength to match. That was obvious last spring during the powerlifting season but no one knew if it would translate to the football field. He plays beside Holleyfield who came on last year as a big raw boned player who also is strong as an ox. Holleyfield is well over 6’ and weighs about 220 pounds. The defensive line had a chance to be outstanding for a few days when Devon Thomas moved to Silsbee from Port Arthur. He weighed in the 210 to 220 range. He played basketball at Port Arthur but had never played football. He unfortunately was injured in the first scrimmage and will miss the entire football season. Elisha

McMahon is now playing and doing a good job at the position but he is considerably smaller than Thomas. The second thing that came to light in the first scrimmage was that there were some defensive backs who would get after the ball. That fact was even more obvious in the second scrimmage. A bunch of guys are contending for the three spots and it is hard to tell who will come out on top. The player who stood out the best at the LCM scrimmage appeared to be Chris Elam. LCM made an effort to challenge the Tiger defenders and the defenders appeared to hold their own. Elam leaped high and outjumped receivers for four passes. Each time he won the battle and swatted the ball away. Coy Bird had a couple of outstanding plays. It is safe to say that nothing is settled in the secondary. The defense has a number of defensive ends who can play the position. Thibodeaux, Kade Smith and Karl Elers all have seen a lot of action. During the scrimmages the players often wear different num-

During the scrimmages the players often wear different num-

bers and sometimes this makes it tough to see who is doing what. Still coaches are playing a lot of players, particularly on defense in an effort to find the right combination.

Good Luck Tigers!

LAMAR CARDINALS: Other Hardin County Players

Wednesday, August 24,2011

Kyle Gillam Center, Letterman-Starter He is a 6-foot-1, 260 pound sophomore who started all 11 games as a redshirt freshman. He played all but three snaps for Lamar on offense. He graded out at 85 percent or better for the season. Gillam appears to be the smallest guy on the offensive line but he battles his bigger adversaries to a standstill in practice drills every day. He is a graduate of Lumberton High School and was a Class 4A honorable mention all-state selection as a senior in 2008. He is the son of Kevin Gillam and Nancy Borne. He is majoring in human resources management. Cody Hussey Running back, Letterman A 5-6, 189-pound junior, played in all 10 games last year and finished third on the team in rushing yards with 217. He averaged 3.7 yards per carry on 58 rushing attempts. He carried the ball 13 times for a season high 77 yards in a home-opening 21-14 win over Webber International. A month later he carried the ball seven times for 41 yards in a 14-0 homecoming victory over Langston. His longest run of the season, 17 yards, came in this game. He also had 10 receptions for 69 yards. The longest reception was 15 yards against Stephen F. Austin. Prior to playing at Lamar he played the 2008 season as a slot

People are talking about the death penalty for the first time since SMU. Financial backers

Jacob Hanna Tight End A 6-1, 210-pound redshirt sophomore, he spent his true freshman season at West Texas A&M where he played as a linebacker but did not appear in a game for the Buffaloes. He is considered to be one of the top prospects for the Cardinals at tight end. His all-around athletic ability and good hands make him a highly regarded prospect.

He attended high school at Lumberton and was a two time all-state selection as a defensive lineman. He earned 20-4A Offensive MVP honors as a running back as a senior. At LHS he had 290 carries for 2,322 career yards and scored 34 touchdowns. He also had 143 tackles and 19 sacks. He was a finalist for the Willie Ray Smith Award. He is the son of Justin and Suzy Hanna and is a communications major at Lamar. Jacob Hanna

paying players for hits on opponents does not set well with the elite in the NCAA.

The mother, Cynthia Chandler, has been teacher and coach of different activities for 35 years. She taught dance at Liberty for many years and then moved to Lumberton were she was a drama instructor for 14 years. She says she has been in Silsbee and loving it for the past four years. She teaches English at SHS and assists her daughter with the drill team. Jenny started out as a speech teacher but now teaches special education. She says she always wanted to be a drill team instructor. She participated in the drill team at Lumberton High School for two years and then got into other activities. She was one of the editors of the yearbook and served as mascot one year. After attending college at McMurray University in Abilene

she came back to Southeast Texas and went to work for a church until she could get a job as a paraprofessional and get her foot in the door as a teacher. She also views this group as a strong one. “I think that this team is the most dedicated and willing group to learn and be the best that they can be,” she said. “They know how to work and how to

The sophomore members of the drill team include Madison Cook, Tiffany Marcental, Abbie Boever, Kathryn McDonald, and Ashlyn Tucker.

31 SEC. 3

She noted that Miranda Thornton is the new coach at Hardin-Jefferson and feels they will have a top notch club.

dom ever loses. Prior to play last Saturday, the squad was 2-1 this year. Coach Hollyfield says, “The team hates losing more than I do.

From Section 3, Page 29

It is not a job. It is something fun to be around and enjoy. The end result is that there are not many schools around where the girls work as hard as they do at Evadale.
