Welcome to the 2017 Greenwich+ Docklands International Festival, which brings together a fantastic programme of outdoor theatre and performing arts over three summer weekends. Greenwich, the centre of time and space, has a distinguished scientific and cultural tradition of reflecting on our place in the scheme of things, and I’ve been particularly mindful of this in putting together this year’s programme, which sets out to offer ‘something different’.
Belgian collective De Roovers bring their radical adaptation of Arthur Miller’s tragic masterpiece A View from the Bridge to a dramatic Thameside location, offering a stunning cinematic setting for these UK première performances. For a completely different view of the world, VR Playground will transport you inside a virtual reality ride on a playground swing. Greenwich Fair and Dancing City are packed with surprising and intriguing shows, including a special focus on South Korea.
There’s also an unusual bus journey in reverse through Eltham, an exuberant illuminated parade in Bow, thought-provoking dance in Thamesmead and a programme of pop-up performances in Woolwich, now emerging as a major new cultural destination. MUSEUM OF THE MOON LUKE JERRAM
The London première of Luke Jerram’s stunning artwork touches down in Greenwich Park. Come and gaze at this incredible internally lit moon sculpture, featuring detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. A surround sound composition, created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones (who wrote the music for last year’s GDIF opening night production The House), features archive audio from moon landings.

Since 2008 his celebrated street pianos installation Play Me, I’m Yours has been presented in over 50 cities and been enjoyed by more than 10 million people worldwide. In 2014 his giant water slide installation Park and Slide transformed a street in Bristol capturing a whole city’s imagination.

Greenwich Fair is GDIF’s annual ‘festival within a festival’, offering three, jam-packed days of familyfriendly art, circus, games, installations and street arts. 160 years after being banned for its disruption of Victorian Greenwich, GDIF’s contemporary reinvention of this nineteenth century knees-up returns with more than 30 productions. WORLD HERITAGE SITE 20TH ANNIVERSARY This year Maritime Greenwich is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This is a unique group of the most important cultural and natural places on earth – special places to be cared for and preserved and which people are encouraged to visit, explore and enjoy now and for generations to come. In celebration of the 20th anniversary, GDIF is heading up the hill in Greenwich Park for an incredible programme of outdoor arts, giving you the chance to experience the home of time and space in a whole new dimension. Full details can be found online or in the Greenwich Fair Guide (available on the day) but in the meantime, here’s a preview of some of what’s in store...
THE INSIDIAN
CAPTAIN BOOMER COLLECTIVE
The rediscovered Insidian line, established in the mid-18th century, will be temporarily open to visitors during Greenwich Fair. This rickety old lift shaft takes you hundreds of feet down towards the centre of the earth and is an experience suited only to the most adventurous and bold amongst us. Not suitable for explorers under 7 years old, nor those prone to claustrophobia or vertigo.
VR PLAYGROUND THRILL LABORATORY
Don a VR headset, jump on a playground swing, and be transported inside an experimental virtual reality ride created by the world’s only Thrill Engineer, Professor Brendan Walker. VR Playground Commissioned by Without Walls, Greenwich+Docklands International Festival and Norfolk & Norwich Festival. Principal funder and production partner: Horizon Digital Economy Research. KOREA/UK 2017–18 Three outdoor arts companies from Korea showcase a trio of outstanding performances as part of the Korea/UK 2017-18 initiative. The Border of the Water; The Song of the Wind by Creative Group SUM BI is an entrancing duet performed within a column of water set against a backdrop of Maritime Greenwich, the Thames and Canary Wharf beyond. Metamorphosis by People in Backpack is a puppetry performance inspired by Kafka’s great work. You are the co-creator in CCOT’s Massager where you can be trained to give paper massages to others, creating ‘Paper Humans’ whose susceptibility to wind, water and fire reminds us of the fragility of life. Supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism, Republic of Korea, Korea Arts Management Service, Centre Stage Korea, the Korean Cultural Centre UK and Arts Council England. We’re taking to the traffic-free roads of Greenwich Town Centre for the absolutely fabulous Out In The Streets – GDIF’s very own Pride programme marking the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in England and Wales. Share your memories of London’s lost pubs with Ida Barr, submit to the planet’s most outlandish hair stylists in the happiness-inducing OSADIA, and create your ideal partner in sock-puppet form with Puppet Paramour. The London Gay Big Band raise the tempo later on, getting you dancing in the streets and, if that doesn’t lift your spirits, we guarantee the Strong Lady will. Literally. Arthur Miller’s tragic masterpiece comes to a dramatic Thameside location in the UK première of acclaimed Flemish company De Roovers’ adaptation, in a new English translation. A story of dock workers and illegal migrants in search of the American dream is given new resonance against the backdrop of the 21st century London riverscape. De Roovers, founded in 1994, is a theatre ensemble that works without a director. Starting with challenging textual material — either classical or contemporary — the actors make and perform theatre that, through compelling text, innovative approaches to design and an urgent performance style, examines issues that are socially relevant. The streets of Eltham become the stage as you take a tour aboard IOU’s custom-made open top bus for an unforgettable journey. Beginning in a life-drawing class, Rear View becomes a moving adventure about a woman’s life led by performance poets Cecilia Knapp and Jemima Foxtrot. Reflections, predictions and observations blur the line between reality and fiction. IOU has a 40-year tradition of creating performances that combine many art forms presented in unusual indoor and outdoor spaces, festivals, venues, galleries and digital worlds. A striking performance exploring confrontation through a series of rhythmic and highly physical interactions, drawing on contemporary dance, Pan-sori, rock and hip-hop. A rare UK appearance from this all-male company from South Korea as part of the Korea/UK 2017–18 initiative.

CIA.MADUIXA Powerful stilt-based contemporary dance from Spain. In tribute to women oppressed through the centuries, MULÏER explores female identity, a woman’s right to live freely, to have freedom of expression and, if she wishes, to run uninhibited through the streets.

RIDE explores the relationship between man and machine through the story of a car (affectionately known as Stanley) that seems to have a life of its own. Dynamic, innovative and great fun for all the family.
An intimate, dramatic and passionate work that explores the limits of what it is to be both physically and emotionally lost. Motionhouse’s trademark athletic precision is fused with raw emotion as one dancer desperately pulls the other back from the precipice.
Moving and hilarious, this heartfelt pastiche explores notions of national character from a bygone era through the evocative music of Edward Elgar, Noël Coward and Percy Grainger, amongst others. Country is an early work by superstar-choreographer Sir Matthew Bourne.

Organic, robotic dance movements are paired with an ephemeral soundscape created from tabletop items in a local café in a duet that challenges the boundaries of private and public space.
A series of short dance pieces inspired by first encounters that last forever, choreographed by Tony Adigun, Sally Marie, Annie-Lunnette Deakin-Foster & Corey Baker.
This hypnotic trio choreographed by Olivier Germser is inspired by martial arts and hand to hand combat. The three dancers are in constant motion, weaving together a performance based on a balance of strengths.

There is step free access across Canary Wharf. Join the BSL/assisted Jubilee Journey. Meet outside Canary Wharf station (on the left hand side as you leave the station) at 12.45pm for a 1pm start. It’s not necessary to book in advance, but if you need assistance in finding our volunteers email access@festival.org.
GETTING HERE Visit TFL to plan your route to Dancing City via Jubilee Line or DLR. Buses: D3, D7, D8, 135, 277. River Bus to Canary Wharf pier. SENSE OF UNITY DUNDU AND WORLDBEATERS MUSIC
Sense of Unity brings the illuminated large-scale German puppet Dundu together with the UK’s LED-lit, high-energy, percussion ensemble Worldbeaters Music for the first time. As dusk falls, follow the band as they parade through Roman Road and discover both baby Dundu and the gentle giant Dundu. Will they find each other? Will they get on?

Enjoy the music of the West African Kora and the drumming riffs and rhythms of Worldbeaters in this moving and spirited processional event.
This is a promenade performance. GDIF Volunteers will lead an assisted route — meet at the market gate on St Stephen’s Road at 9.30pm for a 9.45pm start. Sense of Unity is commissioned by Coasters Touring Partnership with support from Arts Council England. It was produced by Activate Performing Arts and developed in a residency at Corn Exchange’s 101 Outdoor Arts Creation Space.
Both companies have enthralled and entertained audiences worldwide and this is the first opportunity to see them perform together in London.

Tilted Productions’ promenade piece BELONGING(s) subtly provokes thoughts on migration, the notion of belonging and the fleeting nature of what surrounds us. Different in each place and responding to its environment, the piece turns local spaces into illusionary worlds.

As Woolwich embarks on a new chapter, with plans for a creative district larger than the Southbank Centre, GDIF uncovers past and present stories, and future hopes. Dance theatre in the atmospheric ruins of a chapel conjures Woolwich’s proud military traditions, hip-hop around a giant table will whet appetites for Woolwich Town Centre’s diverse restaurant scene, and a concert in a former ammunition factory will explore an exciting new arts space.

This is an orchestral concert, just not as you know it. Each piece is performed three-dimensionally, with the musicians dispersed around different parts of this former ammunition factory. For John Cage’s Williams Mix, a 4-minute long space-age blend of recorded cityscapes and electronic noises, we invite you to listen blindfolded so that you can get lost in the buzz of traffic and the whisper of winds. From the silence, the orchestra emerges to perform Charles Ives’ beautiful The Unanswered Question for strings, wind and solo trumpet. Poems depicting Aulenko, the Finnish forest that inspired the symphony, have been set to music by former BBC Young Composer of the Year Alex Woolf. These fade into Sibelius’ 5th Symphony, which has one of the greatest melodies ever written – an arc of swans flying home to nest, captured in music. As you sit amongst the musicians, with everything sounding so clear and electrifying, you’ll feel like one of the performers.

An outdoor version of Kay’s thrilling and humane portrait of army life telling the stories of five men and women serving on the front line, inspired by input from serving and former soldiers. This moving, dramatic dance piece, which looks at how the human body remains essential to war, is presented in the evocative ruin of the bombed-out St George’s Garrison Church opposite Woolwich Barracks.

Founded by Artistic Director Philippe Freslon in 1986, Compagnie Off started by creating small outdoor shows and has since grown into one of France’s most respected outdoor companies. Last seen at GDIF in 2011 with their iconic production Les Girafes, this finale promises to be a night to remember. This is a promenade show with at least an hour of walking. The starting point is a short walk from Woolwich Arsenal DLR and rail station. Several bus routes stop close by including the 51, 96, 99, 177 and 422. By tube take the Jubilee line to North Greenwich and then bus 161, 472, 422 or the DLR to Woolwich Arsenal. Or take the Woolwich Free Ferry from North Woolwich or the Thames Clipper to Royal Arsenal Pier. Visit tfl.gov.uk to plan your journey. Coming by car?
