HEALING TOGETHER

27 August — 11 September

WELCOME TO GDIF LONDON’S FREE, OUTDOOR ARTS FESTIVAL

HEALING TOGETHER AT GDIF 2021 This year GDIF reflects on what we’ve learned as we emerge from the pandemic, placing the great outdoors at the heart of 16 invigorating days of free and accessible art and celebration. Following long months of lockdown, in which the outdoors has offered a place for solace and connection with nature, GDIF puts outdoor creativity centrestage, shining a spotlight on the spectacle and accessibility of publicly sited art. Last year GDIF became the first live festival to take place since the March 2020 lockdown with a scaled back, socially distanced programme, so I hope that this summer you’ll want to make the most of GDIF’s massive alfresco offer and soak up the positive benefits of outdoor events and productions, which set out to bring us all together again as we start to reimagine the future.

Image: Blue Remembered Hills (see page 42)

GDIF brings together local and international perspectives and I’m therefore really delighted that over the next two years we’ll be developing an annual focus on Flanders, the Dutchspeaking northern part of Belgium, which is also one of the world’s leaders in producing innovative theatre and outdoor arts. A phenomenal array of local and international artists and behind the scenes creatives, technicians, volunteers and partners have come together to create a programme, which following the recent difficult months, forms a much needed ‘festival of healing’ for us all. So why not join us outdoors and let GDIF 2021 revitalise you with its fantastically diverse and uplifting programme? Bradley Hemmings MBE Artistic Director

YOUR VISIT BE PART OF IT

HEALTH & SAFETY

You can help make sure everyone has a great experience at GDIF by:

As we emerge from the pandemic, reopening offers challenges for many of us. Recognising that Deaf and disabled people have been disproportionately affected by Covid 19, we are committed to health and safety arrangements in line with the Seven Principles to ensure an inclusive recovery endorsed by the DCMS.

• Allowing children to the front, and being mindful of sight lines at busy shows by sitting on the ground • Respecting accessible viewing areas • Following advice from staff and volunteers on site • Having your tickets ready and arriving in good time for ticketed shows • Respecting others’ personal space and comfort zones • Following us on Twitter for live updates, including weather-related information! We will only ever cancel if absolutely necessary, so remember to check the forecast and bring appropriate clothing.

GDIF VOLUNTEERS GDIF’s friendly volunteers are on hand at every event to help with information and directions. You can’t miss them in their bright pink t-shirts! Ask them about river travel with Uber Boat by Thames Clippers, access information, or show recommendations!

The Festival has undertaken comprehensive risk assessments, and we will review our policies regularly in the light of the changing situation. Nearly all of our events take place outdoors, and we are committed to working to ensure that everyone can feel as comfortable and safe as possible. Hand sanitiser will be available on all sites, and we recommend wearing face coverings in crowded areas. For more information, please visit festival.org/ gdif-safety, which will be updated on an ongoing basis.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILMING We have photographers and film makers at events to capture footage to share online and for use in future. If you don’t want to be featured, please wear a ‘No Photography’ sticker, available from our volunteers. Got some great snaps you want to share? Tag us @GDIFestival and use #GDIF.

TELL US WHAT YOU THINK We want to hear from you about your experience of the festival, and how we can make it even better next year. You can fill out a feedback form online or at the events. We’d love to hear what you think: bit.ly/GDIF2021survey

FAMILY TREE ACTORS TOURING COMPANY AND THE YOUNG VIC

Written by Mojisola Adebayo

CHARLTON HOUSE AND GARDENS FRIDAY 27 AUGUST, 7.30PM SATURDAY 28 – MONDAY 30 AUGUST 2PM & 7.30PM AGE 13+ £0–£15 Matthew Xia, who directed 846 Live at last year’s festival, returns to GDIF with a new play by Mojisola Adebayo, inspired by the life of Henrietta Lacks, an African American woman, whose cells were harvested and cultivated without her consent after her death from cervical cancer in 1951. The so-called HeLa cells have been vital to studying disease, decoding the human genome, and have even contributed to the development of the COVID-19 vaccines. Exploring timely themes around exploitation and ethics in healthcare, this is a powerful, site-responsive promenade piece. 80 minutes Includes reference to historical, non-consensual, medical experiments on Black women and children. Racial violence is discussed, and racist language and profanity is used. Younger viewers may find some scenes upsetting. Captions provided by the Difference Engine App on your phones – download before arrival and bring a portable charger. Co-commissioned by Actors Touring Company and the Young Vic, and presented as a work in progress production for outdoor premiere with FESTIVAL.ORG. Family Tree is supported by Arts Council England, Royal Greenwich Festivals and Cockayne Grants for the Arts, a donor advised fund at the London Community Foundation. THE INVISIBLE MAN

THE RASCALLY DINER

In this moving stilt theatre piece, a giant bench provides the poetic setting for a performance exploring loneliness in old age. Bringing social isolation and ageing into larger-than-life focus, this universal story resonates with recent memories of lockdown. Following the performance, audience members are invited to explore the bench and experience the world from a different perspective.

Come face to face with the man who isn’t there - or is he? Join the mysterious doctor as he stewards a scientific marvel, in this interactive walkabout performance. Journey with them and learn how their experiments have gone wrong, and what powers they have unleashed – will you see more or less than you’ve bargained for?

Everybody clap your pans – it’s time for The Rascally Diner! Cook up a stink as part of Rufus Skumskins O’Parsleys’ kitchen crew or bring a pot to bang and ward off evil cakes in this fun-filled, messy performance that gently explores food and healthy eating in a silly, songfilled, riotous performance for everyone aged 5+.

Family-friendly street arts, theatre, circus, installations and play will take over the grounds of the Old Royal Naval College and Cutty Sark Gardens on August Bank Holiday Sunday. GDIF’s Greenwich Fair is inspired by the historic Fair at Greenwich, which was hugely popular up until 1852. BLACK VICTORIANS JEANEFER JEAN-CHARLES GUILDHALL YARD, CITY OF LONDON TUESDAY 31 AUGUST – THURSDAY 2 SEPTEMBER 1PM & 6PM ST GEORGE’S GARRISON CHURCH, WOOLWICH FRIDAY 10 – SATURDAY 11 SEPTEMBER 2PM & 6PM Digital Audio Description available for all shows BSL interpreted Tuesday 31 August, 6pm

This powerful and moving dance performance by Artistic Director and Choreographer Jeanefer Jean-Charles is inspired by nineteenth century studio photographs of black men, women and children. Exploring a complex, but often forgotten black presence in pre-Windrush Britain, this performance calls attention to previously hidden figures and challenges historical and contemporary perceptions. Presented in the resonant location of the Guildhall Yard, against the backdrop of London’s historic Guildhall, performances of Black Victorians will be accompanied by an outdoor exhibition and presented as part of the City of London Corporation Outdoor Arts Programme, A Thing of Beauty. Originally previewed at GDIF 2020, this full production of Black Victorians will return to St George’s Garrison Church in Woolwich on 10 and 11 September. 40 minutes Black Victorians is produced and co-commissioned by FESTIVAL.ORG, Brighton Festival, Hatfair and Without Walls and is currently touring across the UK. Black Victorians is inspired by Black Chronicles – The Missing Chapter, an ongoing archive research programme led by Autograph focused on unearthing nineteenth century photographs of black presences in Britain. 28

OFIR YUDILEVITCH JUBILEE PLAZA 1PM & 5PM This highly playful performance combines dance and acrobatics and explores the joy in simply letting gravity take charge. FOCUS ON FLANDERS This outdoor, site-specific production takes audiences on a journey to a hidden landscape, officially closed to the public for more than a century. Under the shadow of war, seven children are playing in the countryside. As their games escalate, the boundaries between fun and cruelty become ever more blurred, leading to disastrous consequences. Last seen at GDIF in 2017 with their production of A View from the Bridge, De Roovers is one of Flanders most respected theatre companies, returning with a production which will take audiences to a restricted landfill site, which holds memories of munitions factories and, with their demolition and the establishment of Thamesmead in the 1960s, childhood games. 90 minutes Blue Remembered Hills is supported by Royal Greenwich Festivals, Peabody, Arts Council England, Flanders House – the Diplomatic Representation of Flanders to the UK, and Cockayne. Cockayne Grants for the Arts, a donor advised fund at the London Community Foundation.

festival.org

@GDIFestival

About Thamesmead Waterfront Thamesmead was founded on a dream. Starting in the 1960s, it was constructed by the Greater London Council, intended to be a model city, with utopian architecture and a vast, wild landscape. Thamesmead’s culture was shaped by an ideal of self-organisation. Its new residents built a community radio station, a newspaper and one of the UK’s first community trusts. One of the lesser-known initiatives was the summer Thamesmead Adventure camps, led by local Community Police Officer Rick Beavis from 1989 to 2000. It is this self-starter spirit that we continue to support with Peabody through our cultural and heritage programmes. The visionary youth development scheme engaged teenagers in an action-packed programme among the hills and waterways of undeveloped land we now call Thamesmead Waterfront, where the ghost of the area’s Royal Arsenal past also lingers and lends atmosphere to the venue of Blue Remembered Hills. You can find out more about the area in our specially created film and programme, as well as through the Thamesmead Community Archive: thamesmeadcommunityarchive.org.uk/

URBAN ASTRONAUT HIGHLY SPRUNG

ROYAL VICTORIA GARDENS, ROYAL DOCKS 1PM & 4PM BSL interpreted at 4pm

This street theatre performance provides a glimpse of the future… where problems surrounding air pollution have reached crisis point. What can the Urban Astronaut learn from audiences now that might change his future? Combining stunning design with a unique travelling flying machine that suspends a performer 20ft in the air, the show uses unusual staging and dance to tell the story of an encounter with a young girl who provides the one thing the astronaut has lost… hope. 30 minutes Urban Astronaut is commissioned by Without Walls and Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival, Norfolk & Norwich Festival and Out There International Festival of Circus & Street Arts. Supported by Gi20.

Walk the Plank will also present a festival finale entitled After the Storm, a Thames based spectacle in which the Woolwich Ferry and the river itself will play a key role. The Woolwich Ferry is an icon of Woolwich and during the early stages of the pandemic, memorably performed ‘donuts’ in the Thames whilst blasting its horn during the Thursday night Clap for Carers. Recalling this proud history, and the unifying power of rivers, this finale moment will deliver an optimistic conclusion to this year’s GDIF. 10 minutes After the Storm is supported by Royal Greenwich Festivals, the Royal Docks Team, Newham Unlocked, and Arts Council England. With thanks to the TfL Woolwich Ferry.
