Physical theatre, stilts, fire and special effects in UK premiere from renowned Polish company Teatr Biuro Podrózy

It gives me enormous pleasure to welcome you to this special 21st birthday edition of the Greenwich + Docklands International Festival. Year after year the festival programme brings a host of new, unusual and stunning spectacles to thrill and delight our residents and visitors alike. The festival theme this year is transformation. When the festival launched in 1996 it was a small, local affair which has blossomed into an event of unprecedented scope and scale.

Being up close and personal with our audience was great fun and to see people turn up to the show, who earlier on the street had said ‘I don’t think it’s for me’, was joyous. This work took me all over London and I was lucky enough to spend a few summers working in Greenwich Park and on Blackheath. I remember doing one of our late night cabarets on a balmy summer’s night; with the tent doors open, sipping customers’ drinks, (I know, no shame), and having a blast with the audience and my fellow performers. That was a real ‘This is why I do what I do and Love It’ time. I know I had to be put in a taxi after overstaying my welcome at Ye Olde Rose & Crown on more than one occasion. Happy Days! Sharon D. Presented in association with Royal Museums Greenwich A specially commissioned spectacle marking the 400th anniversary of The Queen’s House, and its forthcoming reopening this year, featuring dance, digital projection, music and pyrotechnics, with Olivier award winning Sharon D. Clarke and the voice of the legendary Sir Ian McKellen. Directed by GDIF’s Bradley Hemmings and featuring the talents of BAFTA award-winning video artist Tal Rosner, multi award-winning composer Dan Jones, boundary breaking Avant Garde Dance and outdoor theatre company Pan.Optikum, this production will set the scene for 9 days of seriously spectacular theatre. Come early and enjoy a pint of beer brewed specially for the Festival. Gates open at 20:30.

I’m honoured and excited to be a part of this wonderful event. GDIF welcomes and engages the whole community and, as a north Londoner, it’s also a great opportunity for me to find out more about the beautiful Queen’s House, and visit Greenwich again. In my experience, outdoor theatre is usually the first place where people who don’t see themselves as a theatre audience, encounter theatre and discover that it’s not an ‘elitist pastime’, but that it can be powerful, thought provoking, educational, empowering, liberating, and plain old highly entertaining. When I worked with The Bubble Theatre Company ‘back in the day’, we would pitch up the tent on some unsuspecting green space and then take to the streets to advertise the show. People would talk directly to us; they’d interact.

Exploring ideas of home, homelessness and our desire to find a place we can call our own, this new show weaves together slapstick comedy with breathtaking aerial performance and acrobatics, culminating in the creation of a ‘house’ for you to enter.

Normal life gets taken for a spin in this playful show imagining the things we would change if we could – like being able to fly home when the bus is late. With acrobatics and humour, Mimbre apply a spoonful of Mary Poppins and Super Girl’s red cape to freeze the baddies.

Bring your little ones along to this spellbinding, interactive show based on the popular children’s book by Emily Hughes. A real life garden in a large glass box provides the setting for a story which will melt your heart and you might even get your hands dirty too.

Contemporary clown duo Ariza Barcina and Kati Francis weave a story which is both awkward and extraordinary, silly and strange. Witness the beguiling confrontation of a bonkers bag lady and a struggling business man, in this celebratory performance fusing live music, physical theatre and puppetry.

All of us here at Ben Oakley Gallery look forward to GDIF every year, having been in the audience at one of the Festival’s first events in Docklands many moons ago. Sally Daghlian It’s great to see a theatre project created in response to the migrant crisis being performed in Bethnal Green. Movements of people around the world are increasing, due to conflict, globalisation and development. Based in Bethnal Green, Praxis Community Projects supports vulnerable and excluded migrants. Our vision is for a society that welcomes displaced people and migrants, respects their human rights and

enables them to live in dignity. Every day Praxis helps destitute people – often hungry and homeless – who are caught in the complex web of our immigration system, experiencing bureaucratic nightmares, without access to welfare support and refused essential medical and other services. By providing a range of specialist advice and support services – from immigration casework to temporary accommodation and

support groups – we help people to find lasting solutions, so that they can make a contribution to life in the UK. Bethnal Green itself is a great example of the huge contribution that migrants make to community life in London and around the UK. In a world where communication is so often via a screen and where communities gather online rather than in person, this show reminds us of the simplicity and warmth of human contact and the endless possibility of the people around us.

HURyCAN return to GDIF after their performance in 2015, in which a moment of theatrical shock transformed into a thrilling tour de force performance. This new production explores life as an organism. Prepare to be swept up in the magical, beautiful, ugly and vibrantly alive stories of the human body.

Hip Hop theatre meets the beautiful game in this high energy dance piece from Far From The Norm. Fast-paced footwork and physical floor work explore socio-political issues and the connections between multi-cultural Britain and football. You’ll find yourself looking at the nation’s beloved game from a new perspective.

Arlene Phillips I’m so excited to be working with Candoco dancers Joel Brown and Laura Patay to create a new piece that seeks to play with and disrupt the structure of the love duet. The wonderful thing about Joel and Laura is their ability as actors as well as dancers. My first day working with them was spent developing the intimacy needed for a love duet and finding ways for them to express their love through dance. During the following rehearsal, we had a breakthrough and they inspired me to go on working through every emotion needed for this piece. Joel and Laura make their bodies work as individuals and together in extraordinary ways. Love is an emotion we can all identify with and in this duet we will be inviting the audience to explore its complexities and how our daily routines can sometimes shape our relationships. There’s also the London premiere of Emerge/ncy – a new installation performance by acclaimed physical theatre company Tangled Feet.

TS N E V E ALL REE ARE F

If I had to sum up Woolwich in two words, I would describe it as resilient and energetic. Its centuries of mercurial history have shown that it has both these qualities, in spades. To paraphrase Dickens (who incidentally refers to nearby Shooters Hill in the opening scene of a Tale of Two Cities), this place has seen the best of times...and the worst of times. I’m one of the many people who are excited to live here in 2016. There’s a real pep in Woolwich’s step that’s attracting people with energy and vision. It has been this way for the last few hundred years, attracting people from communities around the world. As is London generally, Woolwich is truly a global microcosm. I see

the latest burst of regeneration as simply one more logical phase in Woolwich’s development. It’s a vibrant place by the river, with great transport links and easy access to bucolic Kent. Why shouldn’t it regain its former glory? GDIF2016 is a great example of this area’s vitality. Woolwich loves a party, especially when we get to enjoy our unique home with neighbours, visitors, and those who previously couldn’t find us on a map! Overnight, something mysterious has emerged in General Gordon Square; a strange portal with an opening visible at the top. Slowly, displaced people begin to emerge, then more and more. In this new production from the company that brought One Million to Woolwich in 2013, Tangled Feet ask how we all cope with standing on the edge of enormous uncertainty.

An unusual herd is looking for grazing in Woolwich as they stomp about and chew the cud. These creatures, crafted from items left to rust in the scrap yard, have given new life to our once treasured possessions. Come and see them as they slowly move around, chains clanking, and cogs turning.

London is a city forever under construction. This emotional performance, accompanied by operatic music, captures the poetry of regeneration with a dramatic pas de deux played out between a man and a 13-tonne machine. This exceptional performance has been seen across the world and now comes to GDIF for the very first time.
