Last Minute Study Tips As the mocks come to an end and the daunting orals and practicals commence, it is easy, as an exam student, to become entangled in a web of stress, tears and constant negativity. On top of this, many of us forget that we are not the only ones sitting exams; there are thousands of others in the same boat. So, even if you have spent the past year watching every movie there is to watch on Netflix without as much as an open textbook nearby, there is still hope. Don’t think of it as cramming, think of it as improving on what you already know. 7 Study break ideas Make tea Read a book Listen to calm music Watch one programme episode Go for a walk Call a friend Do something nice for someone

Improve Your Attitude There is a lot to be said about attitude towards work, especially when it comes to studying. If you continuously remind yourself of the reasons why you don’t want to do something, you will never do it properly. Always think of the end goal; the reason for your hard work. Before attempting any study, make sure you are feeling in some way optimistic about what you are doing. With a bad attitude and negative thoughts, you will be unable to concentrate and find yourself being distracted easily. Try to give yourself a visual reminder of something good you will get out of doing well in your exams. For example, if there is a college you really want to go to, stick a leaflet or brochure above your desk or wherever you study. This will motivate you when you need it the most. Avoid spending too much time with negative people. They will only have a bad influence on you and ruin your motivation. Reward yourself for hard work. If you don’t allow yourself some down-time, you will become tired and run-down, something you really don’t need.

Study It has to be done sometime, so why not just start now. Organise yourself! If your desk is a mess, you can’t find your maths copy and you have an overdue essay that needs to get done, you will never want to study, or even get the time. Make sure to keep the area that you use to study clean and organised and have everything you need in reach so that you don’t have to keep getting up from where you are sitting. Always separate the areas in which you work and sleep/rest. For example, don’t study on your bed, as this is where you sleep. You will begin to associate this place with stress or work, and you will find yourself unable to relax here. Highlight key words, phrases and anything you need to know in your textbook. always be willing to help you. Always have a pen and paper at hand. There is no point in simply reading material from a book when it needs to be learned. Revise the mate‘Always do your best. rial first and then jot down What you plant now, what you know, checking you will harvest later.’ your work after. Correct your mistakes and repeat

the process. This writing can be kept as notes for the future. Apparently, information is most digestible first thing in the morning, so start early and your evenings will be free. When making notes, ask yourself questions rather than stating solid facts. Instead of writing ‘The Dublin Lockout was in 1913’, write ‘When was the Dublin Lockout? – 1913’. Try and use the internet for study only when you really need to; it’s a distraction literally at your fingertips. Also switch off your mobile phone (no excuses!). f you find yourself getting overwhelmed and confused about something, stop for a minute. Take a few deep breaths and ask someone for help. Phone a friend or ask an older sibling or parent. Someone will always be willing to help you. 5 healthy study snack ideas Popcorn Crackers/flatbread with topping e.g. peppers, Apple with peanut butter Hummus with flatbread/ crackers Berries and natural yogurt

Ten Alternative Books I love to read, it pleases me to finish a book and say to myself, “you know what that was a great story”. I’ve read a couple of books like that and I’m here to tick off a few novels or series of books you should read.

1.To kill a Mockingbird: I guarantee that even if you don’t like to read you’ll love this book. It has great iconic moments, great humor, great heart and probably the best kid characters you will find anywhere.

2.Disk world series: Stop me if this gets too weird, this series focuses on the magical and crazy events that occur on a planet, which is a flat disc, which rests on the back of four elephants, which stand on the back of a turtle, which flies through space…..If you’re still here I would check these books out for their great humor and memorable, funny characters.

3. The Fables series: Okay, I’m kinda cheating with this one since this is a comic series and not an actual book, but if you can get past that and you want to see fairytale characters living in a New York, murdering each other, starting revolutions and other similar maddening things, I’m sure you’ll love it.

4. The Walking Dead: Again, I’m cheating, but screw it, it’s my list, and besides if you love the show like I do you owe it to yourself to read this comic series. The characters are memorable, it’s intense, exciting and besides, who doesn’t love zombies?

5. Scott Pilgrim series: Okay, last one that’s not an actual book, I swear. But since I’m here, I may as well tell you about this awesome series. Aside from having a great romance story, it has great action and more video game homages than you can count on both hands. 6. The Catcher in the Rye: Right, back to blocks of text, and this is a pretty good block of text. You’ll probably see a lot of yourself in the main character and enjoy it for it’s clever writing and deadpan humor.

7. Fahrenheit 451: This book takes a very interesting look at how, today, not many people read and prefer to use ipads’ or watch tv. It creates a world where books are outlawed and forces the reader to think about what a great medium we would loose if this future was allowed to happen…yeah, we got deep.

8. Lord of the Flies: And no, this is not a story about the lord high “king fly” or something. No, this is a book about marooned children on an island who create their own civilization, with disastrous results, and I mean really disastrous results. Be prepared for a tearjerker.

9. Animal Farm: Ah yes, a charming story about pigs, chickens and communism…. wait what? Yeah, odds are you’ve heard of this one, but I still highly recommend reading it, it’s inventive and has one of the best quotes you will find in any book anywhere.

10. 1000 Places to see Before you Die: We’ve all seen this book somewhere. If you plan on going on a holiday, or you’re going to Uni, make sure to have a copy of this in your bag; it is in a sentence, one of the most useful books of all

Picture Perfect Let’s face it no matter how many times Jessie J and Hannah Montana shove it down our throats, we all know that person who is fairly close to perfect, that person who just seems great at everything. Believe it or not everybody, that person is trapped inside everyone just waiting for a chance to show the world what they have to offer. Don’t get me wrong; being perfect isn’t about changing who you are but about embracing and improving what you already have to offer. Just a few pointers to get you started: Take pride in your appearance; come on guys, this is the absolute basics - when you look good you feel good! Simply showering daily, brushing your hair and teeth WEARING DEODARANT!!! will go a long way. Care less about what people think; I hate to break it to you guys but people aren’t really that interested in your life. I know it sounds incredibly harsh but just think about the amount of time you spend worrying about what others will judge you for and the time you actually spend thinking about them!!! There is a huge difference. I’ll put my hand up and say that I used to care what people thought way too much but trust me, letting go of those worries will make you a whole lot happier. Do things that you find fun; don’t get wrapped up in what people will think of you for doing something that you find interesting. Just remember, you’re not the one missing out on a good time. Try everything; Speaking as someone who has attempted many activi-

ties (some not as successful as others) finding your true calling takes time and patience. A cliché that contains some truth is that everyone is the master of their own talent; it’s what you chose to do with it that will define you. Be yourself; ughh, I hate myself for even thinking that but I have to say it’s true. If you’re not quite sure who that person is yet, give it time and don’t be who you think you should rather than who you want to be. Be confident, be loyal to your friends and above all be real. Real people make mistakes but they’re the easiest to forgive. Follow these tips and realise you are the type of person that even you could learn to love.

Im bliana rinne pobal na scoile ar fad sár-iarracht chun Seachtain Na Gaeilge a cheiliúradh. Rith Seachtain na Gaeilge ón 4ú -17ú Márta. Maisíodh an scoil ar fad don ócáid agus ghlac gach duine le spiorad na Gaeilge don tseachtain. Cruthaíodh atmaisféar iontach sa scoil le linn na tréimhse ar fad. Bhí ceol traidisiúnta againn san áit shóisialta gach lá agus fiú taispeánadh biachlár na bialainne as Gaeilge don tseachtain. Bhí eachtraí éagsúla ar siúl ag daltaí na scoile le linn na seachtaine freisin. Ghlac a lán daltaí páirt in Agallamh an Fháinne ar an gCéadaoin . Eagraíodh díospóireacht sinsearach ar an Déardaoin sa leabharlann. Bhain gach duine an-sult as agus bhí tacaíocht iontach ag na foirne go léir. Bhí argóintí den scoth ag gach duine agus bronnadh uibheacha Cásca ar na buaiteoirí. Is léir go bhfuil ardchaighdeán Gaeilge ag daltaí sa scoil seo! Chomh maith leis sin eagraíodh Tóraíocht Taisce don Chéad Bhliain agus Tráth na gceist agus damhsa Gaelach sna ranganna éagsúla. Ar an Déardaoin imríodh cluiche iománaíochta agus ghlac múinteoirí agus daltaí páirt ann. Ba mhór an chraic é!! Bhí comórtas póstaer do na daltaí sa chéad bhliain agus bhuaigh Emily Whelan agus Sinead Sexton duaiseanna don phostaer is fearr. Chríochnaigh an tSeachtain le Lá Glas ar an Aoine agus chuir sé go mór le hatmaisféar na seachtaine. Ar an iomlán, bhí Seachtain na Gaeilge ar fheabhas againn anseo i gColáiste an Droichid Nua, lán le himeachtaí corraitheacha agus spiorad na Gaeilge. Tá aip Seachtain na Gaeilge 2014 ar fáil don iPhone anois ar iTunes agus is féidir na himeachtaí go léir a bhí ar siúl i do cheantar agus ar fud na tíre a fháil ann. Ní féidir a shéanadh ach go raibh Seachtain na Gaeilge bríomhar, taitneamhach againn go léir i mbliana; agus tar éis páirt a ghlacadh i Gaeilge 24 i mbliana freisin is léir go bhfuil spiorad na Gaeilge beo beathach sa scoil seo! Gaeilge Abú!!

Celebration of Music Night On Thursday the 13th of April our celebration of Music night took place, as always perfectly orchestrated and conducted by the wonderful Ms. O’Brein. As we have come to expect with this now annual event the talent in the College is immense. Anyone who was lucky enough to be in attendance would have been bowled over by the soloists, musicians and Junior and Senior choirs. Well done to all involved.

Variety show

I’ll tell you what I want, what I really really want… Variety Show everyday! Well done to Ms. Smythe and Mr. Sherlock on organising another great show.

Best of Luck to staff and students who have now jetted off to do charity work in Uruguay for the Easter holidays while most of us will be at home stuffing our faces with chocolate. Also Bon Voyage to the French trip flying out next week.

Astrology Aries: 21th of March- 20th of April. You’re an active person who enjoys snatching the role of the leader and pulling through for others. The urge for independence runs strongly within you, along with a streak of assertiveness. Even so, you can be impatient, aggressive and naïve! You’ll often get along with people who are born into the star sign of Aquarius, Libra and Gemini. Your best crush matches are Sagittarius and Leo! Your lucky colours are red, and scarlet. The best cologne/perfume for you to apply is cedar or frankincense, as well as musk. My tip for you is to be careful who you tell your secrets to; they may be a wolf in sheep’s skin. How to nab an Aries: Don't beat round the bush, cut to the chase because if they don't fancy you they won't hang around.

Taurus: 21st of April- 21st of May. You’re a dependable person who prefers to be down to earth, if you get what I’m saying. Determination is another strong point of yours that others admire as well as want. Even so, you can be possessive and stubborn! You’ll often get along with people born into the star sign of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Your best crush matches are Virgo and Capricorn! Your lucky colours are green, orange, and violet. The best cologne/perfume for you should be made out of roses and patchoulis. My tip for you is to let allow others to input ideas of their own instead of you making all of the decisions. How to nab a Taurus: Take your time, give little but expensive gifts and don't disagree.

Another Year, another Ski Trip 2 broken collar bones, doctors on call, leaping frogs, newfound romances, numerous discos and many Oscar-worthy falls later, the Ski trip 2014 has come and gone. Getting there wasn’t easy with a 3 hour plane ride & 5 hour bus journey, finally to arrive at three in the morning at Marilleva Ski resort Italy. Weak with fatigue, no one had trouble sleeping that night as we settled in for the 7 exciting days ahead, which we would all come to wish would never end. 7 o’clock each morning, we were awoken with a loud (dreaded) knock at the door. We hauled our stiff bodies out of bed, pulled on our thermals and traipsed downstairs to breakfast. During the first few days it’s easy to say we were no Olympic ski team, however we did improve with time but not without our casualties; poor Leah and Tom from Ms. Lenehans group aka ‘the destroyer’ unfortunately ended up in A&E each with a broken collarbone in tow. Nonetheless everyone remained in high spirits with the whole trip, injured, sick and teachers alike dancing and singing together at the late night discos. The food was another story that we do not want to get into… I think we have all been left haunted by the amount of pasta consumed. Overall it was a very successful trip, one not to be forgotten spent with people who came home closer than ever, each with their own stories to tell. When February next year rolls around, we know that all of us will be green with envy of the lucky third years jetting off to their trip of a lifetime.

18 You know your Irish when........ If you can relate to at least five of these you are as Irish as the soil beneath you. You know your Irish when... You have no idea how to make a long story short. The person you insult the most is probably your best friend. You don’t know the words to a song but it doesn’t stop you from singing. You can’t wait for the other person to stop talking so you can start talking. For the “craic” is the best reason to do anything. Saying “I will ye” means I definitely won’t. You have a gift for swearing. Your scared of the wooden spoon. You can’t go a day without saying “Jesus” Drinking tae is a perfectly normal pastime. People ask you how your doing but don’t stay around for the reply. You feel sick and so open a can of 7up, leave it for an hour and its magically turned into a medicine. Sing Amhrán na bhfiann but don’t exactly know what it is your singing. Your someone uses the line a little birdy told me when they know something about you. All your phone call ends by “right bye bye bye bye bye” You know at least ten Mary’s. You complain about how awful the weather is all the time. Youlove to complain about Ireland to a foreigner but if they too complain about Ireland you get offended. You use sarcasm to reply to everything.
