Editorial piece Hello, everyone and a warm welcome from us on the NCP editorial team. We would like to welcome back the teachers and the 5th and 6th years and are looking forward for the rest of the school to be back very soon. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers for the great enthusiasm and effort they have put into online school over these difficult times. It has been very uplifting to engage in conversation with our teachers and peers over Teams throughout this lockdown. We believe this lockdown to have come with many challenges for every household but with the help of Zoom, Teams and social media we have been able to stay in contact with our family and friends. We are very glad to be bringing to you our latest version of the NCP. Continued on next page

A big thank you to all our contributors as always. It is very motivating to see students doing what they love from home, and we love encouraging students to write during this time. It is very enjoyable to read through the many submissions and see how everyone is handling the pandemic. The talent and determination of our students has been really inspiring and we would like to extend the opportunity to any students looking to write whether it be an essay on a topic they enjoy or even photographs. All the articles in the issue have been an honor to read as the writing and English talent in this school continue to shock us. We are forever grateful to be able to continue doing what we love and bringing you the NCP remotely. We would like to thank everyone for adhering to the guidelines and helping us to get back to school and back to a bit of normality. Without everyone staying home and overcoming the current circumstances we wouldn’t be where we are today. We hope to provide a special edition of the college press for all our readers at home. This edition was very enjoyable to put together and we hope everyone enjoys it just as much as we did. Stay safe and have a wonderful Easter

Easter fast approaches and we prepare for our second Easter like no other. There are many of the old reliable traditions which give us comfort, whether it be attending Easter Sunday mass (online), having an egg hunt, a nice family Easter lunch, gorging yourself on chocolate until it hurts to stand or maybe you have your own family Easter traditions? But do you ever wonder what people do around the world during Easter time? Here are some of…

Did you know that, in Russia, the Easter meal is accompanied by a knob of butter in the shape of a lamb. This is considered good luck in Russian legend as a lamb is the only animal Satan can’t take the shape of! Who knew?!? In Ireland we may buy lots of Easter bunnies but in Australia, you may be more likely to buy an Easter Bilby. In an attempt to raise awareness about the dwindling Bilby population, confectioners are now selling small rabbit-size marsupials which satisfy both your sweet tooth and desire for conservation.

Possibly the strangest I found was in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and some parts of Hungary, a tradition of whipping is carried out on Easter Monday. ... A legend says that women should be spanked with a whip in order to keep their health, beauty, and fertility during the whole next year. Although the tradition goes way back, and the whipping should not be painful but in “good fun” - I think it probably best to stay indoors or avoid a city break to the Czech Republic at Easter time.

Easter in France and Hungary

The NCP

Every Easter Monday, the residents of Haux (France) crack more than 4,500 eggs into a gigantic pan to create a massive Easter omelette that serves over 1,000 people. Each family breaks the eggs in their homes in the morning and they gather in the main square where the eggs are cooked for lunch. And dinner. And breakfast the next morning And finally… In Hungary, women dress up in traditional clothes on Easter Sunday and get splashed with water.

Easter traditions that should have continued:

In 1461 the mayor of Jaén in Spain donated 10,000 eggs to his citizens so they could have a huge food fight. His name was Constable Don Miguel Lucas de Iranzo. He built this huge fake wooden Castle that he wheeled into the city centre and he then hold himself up in his house with some of his guards. The townspeople got in this Castle and they had an egg fight against each other. They did it again mayday because they enjoyed it so much and for a few subsequent years. I think it does kind of feel like a thing that should have carried on forever, doesn't it?

The flora app: Flora is an app started by group of young programmers called AppFinca Inc. The aim of Flora is to reduce the amount of time you spend on your phone and it also offers a to-do list function. In the app you set a timer for a specific length of time and the app plants a virtual tree. If you switch on your phone during this period, your tree will die if you don’t however you tree will grow up and the more time you stay off your phone the more exotic and interesting the trees get. Flora also works with organisations in Africa and East Asia and has so far planted nearly 64,000 real trees for poor rural communities. Personally, I have found Flora very helpful during online school, I find it a great way to avoid clicking into Snapchat or TikTok and just mindlessly scrolling. I have a reminder set for every class so I can stay on track. I find it particularly useful for one annoying habit of my own. I will sometimes spend much of my lunchtime powering through homework without even leaving my desk.

Continued on next page

With Flora I have set a reminder for five minutes past the start of lunch, so then I must drag myself down to the kitchen. Another fun feature is the ability to grow trees with your friends this way there's even more pressure not to kill your tree because then your friend will also lose out. Overall, I would rate this app 10/10. I have halved my daily screen time and am now a lot more focused and organidsed. If you are a bit of a procrastinator like me, I would highly recommend getting this app. By Lily Ryan

Celebrating Easter in Newbridge College from home Thursday the 4th of March marked this year’s world book day celebrations. At Newbridge College, even though we are not all physically in school we could not let the day go past without marking it. I have to say this was mainly down to the trojan work of Ms. McCluskey.

I know many of you took part in many activities during the day. The Teacher Shelfie competition was a particular favourite of mine.

Here are the correct answers. A Ms Osbourne B Mr Sherlock C Ms Graham D Mr Brew E Ms Carey Congratulations to the competition winners: Ruth Dillon, 6th Year Amy Tyrell, 2nd Year Ciara Doran, 2nd year

WORLD

BOOK DAY World Book day is celebrated annually and this year it was celebrated on the 4th March 2021, although differently from previous years due to Covid-19 guidelines. The day was mainly celebrated virtually, activities included virtual book readings, online events and much more. Usually we would be in school for World Book Day but this year was different due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which means we can’t gather together to celebrate as we usually do. This year teachers took a different approach while learning from home, instead of in-class activities and library competitions, there were worksheets and a teacher’s bookshelf competition. Teachers also told us about how important it is to read during lockdown for our mental health. My class also took an English class to play a quiz for World Book Day, we were quizzed on authors, book titles, characters for example. It was quite a fun class to have as a break in our day full of block classes. There were also events held by the Kildare library, some of which were Kildare Writers Showcase which was of course held online, a Writing Workshop and plenty of other activities to entertain and entice the bookworm/budding writer. These online events helped connect the community through these difficult times with similar interests and hobbies. BY Sally Glennon

BRUNO THE ALMIGHTY Do you think Bruno Fernandes is the best midfielder in the world? Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes is a Portuguese professional footballer, who plays as a midfielder for a Premier League club, Manchester united and the Portugal national team. He was born on the 8th of September 1994 He grew up in Maia, in the Metropolitan area of Porto, Portugal. His dream of becoming a professional footballer: Growing up Fernandes was a kid who dreamed about becoming a footballer. He got inspiration from his brother and that’s when Bruno started to change things. Bruno was born into a family who loved sport. Fernandes made a huge leap and dropped out of school before he could finish 11th grade. He became a really good player and started moving and advancing to different clubs and in the year 2020 Bruno signed for Manchester united. Imagine Man UTD winning the Premier League with Bruno taking the last kick of the ball, boom and he scores. I have recently had the pleasure of watching the Man United games and one game stood out to me in particular- when Bruno scored the goal of the month against West Bromich. This goal was amazing because he got the ball angled perfectly and in the right position to beat the keeper’s reaction time.

The Rise of Fernandes “You can be a leader without being a captain.” One quote that stood out to me was when Bruno said, “You can be a leader without being a captain, it’s the way you live your life, how you are on the training ground, in your own life, how you grew up and your mentality, it’s a little bit of all this”. Since the start of his career, he has scored 24 goals, 43 appearances and 17 assists. This really shows that Bruno is an outstanding midfielder, and he is a great inspiration for young kids that want to be a footballer one day. Overall, I think this piece of writing explains a lot about Bruno and how good he is on the field. If managers could get the chance to read this article, I think they would be very impressed.
