Welcome to the 32nd Duluth Fall Festival – “Local is Good”

The Duluth Fall Festival is a way of life for the locals. This Festival represents years of commitment and passion towards keeping Duluth a city that values traditions and heritage. In this time of constant changes, this authentic, local event welcomes 100,000 people to our city over two days. Serving as both Mayor of Duluth and as the 2014 Duluth

Fall Festival Chairperson, my appreciation to the hundreds of year-long volunteers has intensified. This organic event would not happen without the people that organize, design and implement this elaborate two day event. As you read through this keepsake tabloid, you will start to understand the years of work that has gone into making the Duluth Fall Festival one of the largest

About the Cover

Since 1985, all tabloid covers have featured Duluth or fall-themed artwork created by a local artist. This year’s cover was created by lifelong Duluth resident Ann Parsons Odum. Over the years, Ann’s paintings have been used many times. Ann will be selling her book on Duluth History, featuring her Duluth paintings, at the Festival General Store with proceeds going to the Festival. Saturday September 27th Sunday September 28th

festivals in the Southeast. Working together and making dreams become reality have kept this festival alive for 32 years. The mission of the Duluth Fall Festival Committee is to generate a sense of community as well as enhance Historic Downtown Duluth. Steadfast local leadership and years of generosity from the Festival Committee have added many aesthetic qualities to our

beautiful downtown. It is definitely one of the reasons that Duluth is considered to be a quality community that provides a healthy environment for living working, educating and playing! Please join us on September 27th and 28th. It is well worth the visit, as the city looks absolutely beautiful. Supporting our local businesses and community

means we truly believe “Local Chairperson is Good.” My “headquarters” during the festival will be at the Festival Center stage. If you are a visitor, I would like to personally welcome you to historic, beautiful downtown Duluth and to the best festival in the Southeast - The Duluth Fall Festival. hands. She has learned to walk again, due to prosthetics, and now has state of the art prosthetic hands, which have added greatly to her life. Aimee has also adopted a service dog, Belle, who has helped make her life easier. Despite everything she has been through, Aimee continues to live life to the fullest and uses her story to inspire others who face similar struggles. She hopes to share how she made it through this tragic experience, what she has learned along the way, and how she plans to use it to change the lives of others. Aimee's courage, bravery and positive attitude are amazing. She has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, the Katie Couric show, and many others. She is now working on her second Master's Degree to become a social worker to help other people. She is an inspiration to everyone who knows her. Architect Rob Ponder, Duluth citizen and Downtown Development Authority Chairman, donated his time and energy to design a large addition onto Aimee’s home, retrofitted for her

accessibility. He also helped coordinate getting the work donated. Rob is a Rotary friend of Aimee's father, Andy. Ponder says that working with Aimee is the most inspiring thing that he has ever done. Rob has also been a great asset to Duluth, and has given countless hours to its improvement. Because improving Downtown Duluth is the mission of the Festival, we are privileged to honor Rob, as well.

We miss you Cindy Sutt!

This year we lost a beloved member of Duluth Fall Festival. Cindy Sutt has helped the Festival for

many years. She was the designer of our Festival logo, and every year chose the logo colors to blend with and enhance the annual t-shirts. She also designed the programs and invitations for our events. Her talent always shined through, as she came up with beautiful combinations every year. Cindy took us to a new level! She is also greatly missed by the staff of their family business, Rock Paper Scissors, located in Lawrencevil e, and by her spouse, Randy, and daughter, Amanda, who are carrying it on.

Photo courtesy of Copeland family. Grand Marshal of the 2014 Parade is 26 year old graduate student, Aimee Copeland. She will lead the Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday morning and then be honored at the Festival Opening Ceremony at the Duluth Festival Center. Aimee miraculously survived a near fatal case of necrotizing fasciitis in 2012 after falling from a zip line. Against all odds and medical knowledge, Aimee lived through the infection, although she coded twice during the process. However, she lost her entire left leg, right foot and both

Honorary Grand Marshal: Randy Belcher, Chief of Police for the City of Duluth

Honorary Grand Marshal is Randy Belcher, who is celebrating 30 years as Duluth’s Chief of Police. Duluth is well-known for having one of the best police departments in the state. Much of that credit goes to Chief Belcher and his high standards for police work. Chief Belcher’s dedication to keeping our community safe has, for many years, made Duluth the safest city in Gwinnett County. Recently, Movoto Real Estate blog named

as Duluth one of the “Top Ten Safest Cities” in Georgia. Belcher joined the police department in 1976 when only eight officers were working the streets. When he was promoted to Chief in 1984, he was the state’s youngest police chief. Now, he leads a department of 76 full-time employees. Chief Belcher is a progressive leader who likes to be first in adopting the tools and technologies that his officers need to do their jobs. Duluth is fortunate to have such an outstanding individual leading those who serve and protect us every day.

About the Duluth Fall Festival

The Duluth Fall Festival celebrates its 32nd anniversary this year. From its humble beginning in 1983, the Festival has grown and changed immensely. The following list shows examples of the growth: • Committees have grown from 4 to more than 50 • Volunteers have increased from 25 to almost 400 • Arts & Crafts and Food booths have grown from 40 to more than 350 • Attendance has grown from handful of people to more than 80,000 The Sponsorship committee was created in 1997, and now the Festival has about 140 sponsors who, when combined, contribute about $140,000. Today, the Duluth Fall Festival is one of the most successful festivals in the southeast, and, one of the few festivals of this size in the country that is run completely by volunteers. Festival Mission Festival proceeds are used towards improving and beautifying Historic Downtown Duluth. The Festival has spearheaded numerous

special projects, including purchasing and developing Taylor Park, paving and landscaping the Festival Courtyard, helping with “Parsons Alley,” increasing the size of the public restrooms, installing the Eastern Continental Divide Monument, renovating the Festival Center, donating to Red Clay Theatre, and much more. By far, the largest Festival undertaking was building the Duluth Festival Center Amphitheatre, a complementary addition to the city’s Town Green. Community Fellowship Fellowship is another important goal of the Festival. The Festival organization sponsors many events throughout the year to establish life-long friendships and community connections. Activities include: monthly meetings, Festival Nights Out, downtown work days, a Summer Rally, an annual cookout, the Taste of Duluth, a community luncheon (for sponsors, volunteers, city workers, first responders, and others), a community Christmas Tree lighting and more. If you are interested in volunteering with the Festival, visit our website at www.duluthfallfestival.org, contact the Membership committee at dffMembership@gmail.com, or see any volunteer.

Sponsors In the early days of the Duluth Fall Festival, any vendors who applied were accepted—we were just happy to have them! Each year, more and more Arts and Crafts vendors applied, leaving no room for commercial businesses. In 1997, a volunteer suggested that we develop a Sponsor program to allow a limited number of businesses to participate in the Festival by paying a higher booth fee, enabling the Festival to raise more money for projects. Thus, our Sponsor program was born! Since then, several levels of sponsorship have been developed, with the perks increasing at each level. Now, 140+ sponsors, donate from $250 to $15,000 each, for an average total of around $150,000. All Festival proceeds go toward the beautification and improvement of Downtown Duluth. During the last 32 years, the Festival has donated more than two million dollars to the City for this purpose. We appreciate and say ‘Thank You’ to all of our sponsors, who have been most instrumental in making this possible.

New this year: The General Store is proud to offer Tervis® brand insulated tumblers with the Festival logo. Tervis® tumblers are made in the USA and have a lifetime guarantee.

About the Festival T-Shirt and Concert

Each year, the Festival T-shirt color is a surprise. This year, for the first time, the color of the shirt was selected by a vote of the Festival volunteers, but kept secret until the unveiling at the Festival Concert on August 13. Rupert’s Orchestra, was back again this year due to popular demand. In 1985, the first official T-shirts were donated by Tom Martin of Citizen’s Bank. They are still a much sought-after item, and many sponsors join the Festival ranks just to get their names on the shirt.

Man’s Corner Man's Corner will once again be a part of the Duluth Fall Festival. Features will include: Howard Brothers Hardware, Big Green Eggs grilling, Ag-Pro/John Deere, Georgia Aquarium, Gwinnett Braves, Road Atlanta, live Football games under the tent, and much more.

Walter Reeves, the Georgia Gardener will be personally appearing between 11:30 and 2:30 on Saturday. There will be a special opportunity to enter a drawing for a $20,000 John Deere tractor package. We hope to see you in Man's Corner at the Duluth Fall Festival.

Duluth Fall Festival welcomes back Fort Benning’s 1-15 Infantry Soldiers to march in the Parade. Wear your red, white and blue and wave your American flags along the parade route as these soldiers march through Duluth. Afterwards, gather at the Festival Center to see the

1-15 Soldiers during the Opening Ceremony. The 15th Infantry has a long and distinguished history. It deployed to Iraq four times. Its 2007 deployment was in response to President Bush’s surge of 30,000 more troops into Baghdad and surrounding areas. The Can Do Soldiers

conducted air assaults, disrupted the enemies’ movements, captured the Division’s #1 high value target and witnessed Iraq’s reconciliation. During their 2009 deployment, they assisted Iraqi security forces during the second national democratic parliament elections.
