The Editor’s Note
A
magazine is supposed to inform, inspire, and en tertain. We editors also hope our titles will im pact your psyche, so there are lingering thoughts, ideas, and knowledge that continue to influence
behavior and conversation once the final page is turned. My conundrum is in getting that impact when it comes to Dubai, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and, quite frankly, the entire Middle East. How to grasp the person of the moment – or the project, event, or idea – in a place that grows, changes, and develops (for the better) at impossible speeds? At the conceptual meetings for this issue, there were all types of answers: “More men on the ground.” “Invest ourselves in specific, particular issues.” “Imbed a journalist on Nakheel’s board of directors.” (My personal favorite). Until somebody discovered the real one: enjoy, appre ciate, and marvel at what is occurring, because the world has never seen anything like it. My next question: what’s beyond the money? What is be hind all this development? The innovation of ideas, the amal gamation of cultures, and process of creating from scratch that defines this wonderful area of the world and makes it a place where sophisticated luxury living has ascended in a way no one could comprehend of only a decade or so ago. This answer was much easier to come by. It’s the people. Just a quick browse through our pages illustrates my point. Asmaa Al Shabibi’s fingerprints on the DIFC Art Fair have taken what was little more than a novelty and catapulted it into a can’t miss, culturally relevant, and luxuriously ap pealing event. Why was she able to do this – beyond her incredible ta lent? Because people such as Chris O’Donnell and Nakheel have pioneered a place that has brought people who crave events and experiences such as the DIFC Art Fair. Their next big project? Teaming up with the world’s most famous de veloper, Mr. Donald J. Trump, to build the Palm Jumeirah’s tallest and most exquisite condominium and hotel. You’ll read about it inside. People in the Middle East build upon each other, like one slab atop another. They are not stopping. Neither are the cranes. The end result? A place where those of us who in dulge in the most pleasurable aspects can life can immerse ourselves (and marvel). Enjoy the issue.

Even as you come in for a landing, you’ll notice the EC130’s technology at work—or rather, you won’t notice anything at all. Instead of landing back end first, a common problem with older systems, the articulated landing gear lands flat, and experiences less ground resonance, making for an almost imperceptible transition from air to tarmac. The gift and talent of humor is a characteristic to be coveted and cherished. It enables one to take a closer and more sophisticated look at sectors of society, the people within them, and what makes them tick.
Gad Almaleh has always had this gift and ability. He is a unique man. Born in infamous
Casablanca, Morocco, maybe his insight into people was predetermined. His label as humorist can probably be attributed to many elements of his background. For starters, saying Gad grew up in a mixed cultural background is a bit of an understatement. By the time he was just a teenager, his fluency in Arabic, French, and Hebrew leave a lot to be envied. After all, there is no better way to gain insight into what makes people think and laugh than to be able to communicate with them. His journey into independence began a bit earlier than most, when at the age of just seventeen he spurned his Moroccan home and headed to French Canada, in Montreal, within the Province of Qubec. It is here where he began studying political science, before being invited into the theater. This, as is often said, is where the story really begins. The combination of theater and political science are in many ways what defines Gad’s talents, insights, charms, charisma, and his appeal can in many ways be attributed to the combination of these impressive arenas of thought and expression. The next stop in his tour of development was Paris, a global epicenter of culture. It is here that as a twenty-two year-old, Gad studied with Isabelle Nanty, with whom he developed and produced his first one-man show “Décalages”. “Décalages” was very much a biography of Gad’s life up until that point, and from this first breakthrough, it is very easy to see the extent of his insights into human nature and culture. With a stint in the development of film, Gad’s real talents came back into play with his second one-man production, “La Vie Normale.” This comedic production truly cemented Gad as an insightful humorist of the times, and his appeal and recognition began to reach levels usually only reserved for blockbuster stars and cheap pop icons. His talents only manifested themselves further later on with a third one man production, “L’autre c’est moi”. Of the show, Gad has said that it contains more improvisation and interaction with the public than his previous performances, and relates more to the tradition of stand-up comedy. As with all of his works, Gad has always been praised greatly, and has received accolades such as the “Chevalier des Arts et des lettres” medal by French culture minister Renaud DonneDieu de Vabres, in March 2006, and he was also elected “la personnalité la plus drôle de France” (The Funniest Person in France), beating out 49 other humorists, in January 2007. Throughout it all, Gad has remained true to his subtleties, intellect, and observations, making him a unique commentator on the human psyche. His success is something to be admired, and it is why we are inspired by him.

The real estate world in the United Arab Emirates is an ultra-competitive, always developing industry. Each and every day there are new projects being developed, new deals being signed, and new blueprints being mulled over by some of the most celebrated architects in the world. Due to the nature of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates has relegated itself as a mostly luxury oriented setting. Luxury real estate certainly leads the pack when it comes to business. This industry’s leaders are vital. This is the reason we are inspired by Nadia Zaal. Not quite thirty-years-old, the CEO of Al
Barari real estate project – the $2 billion USD project that was the first Dubai-based mixed-use luxury development – has already defined herself as a woman of incredible business savvy and cemented herself as a visionary in the ever-evolving development market. The family business that she leads is only expanding, and showing no signs of slowing down. It has found its place and hit a stride in the market, building exclusive and unique residences and sustainable communities in some of the most beautiful areas of the region. Nadia is a visionary in her ideas for what makes a community or place appealing to live in, and her fingerprints and can be seen in everything her company develops. She is also the founder of ZAYA, one of the newer and most unique and forward thinking developers in the area. As co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Nadia is responsible for the direction of ZAYA, and oversees every single aspect of the company. Currently, ZAYA is developing a project called Nurai, which is a beautiful secluded island with exquisite beaches, azul waters, and beautiful greenery. Near Abu Dhabi, Nurai is a remote but accessible luxurious hideaway, accessible by either boat or helicopter. Her past experiences as one of the most dynamic business minds in the region have proven she can tackle anything and expect terrific results. Beyond the real estate successes, Nadia has also led one of the regions largest IPOs for the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company. She has furthermore sat on board of directors for the Taweelah Asia Power Company, which closed the largest energy financing deal in the Gulf. With her talented mind, Ms. Zaal is truly making her mark in the growing Middle East. After being named to the Ahlan! Hot 100 List 2008, Nadia lets on that although she spends most of her week in Abu Dhabi, she confesses to coming home to Dubai each weekend for some proper spoiling and affection from her family. "Up until a few years ago I had always wanted to live in Paris but Dubai has grown so much as a city and has so much to offer that as a base I love it and never want to live anywhere else." With Dubai’s attractive growth, Nadia is one of many to see the city in this new light. Not only beautiful and bright, Nadia also as a refreshing sense of humor. Her most embarrassing moment was meeting royalty without shoes on. "Rushing to that meeting and forgetting my shoes was definitely not the impression I wanted to leave with but things like that happen to me all the time," she laughs. The UAE national is refreshingly realistic about life, believing all experiences help us grow and evolve, and we are sure that the loveliness that is Nadia Zaal shined through just the same.

He has been coined “the most recognised man on a horse anywhere in the world since Clint Eastwood and John Wayne” by the website jockeysroom.com. This statement is probably pretty accurate. Frankie Dettori’s career as a jockey was one of ultimate success and triumphant victory. His list of achievements and accolades reads like a made up resume of the perfect jockey. He has ridden horses from Firebreak and Sulamani, to Moon Ballad and Dubai Millenium. His pedigree may have something to do with his success, being the son of world famous Ital-
ian jockey Gianfranco Dettori, but thirty-seven year old Frankie – born Gianfranco – has certainly carved out his own identity both on and off the racetrack. This is why we are inspired by him. Beyond the racetrack, Frankie is a man of an enormous personality. He is a man of tremen-
dous charisma and passion, and that has translated into a variety of other ventures and activities that have thrust his charming demeanor and vivacious appetite for indulgent living into the forefront of our celebrity consciousness. For a small man, his is vivacious and appealing on a number of levels. From his appearances on celebrity television shows throughout Europe, to his gig as the face of “Jockey” yogurt throughout Europe, his genuine charm seems to supplant the normal cheapness associated with people who shill products. It may be his tagline for the yogurt campaign and more, but it certainly is true that “Frankie knows whatta you alike.” But why so extremely relevant now, and especially in the Middle East? That is a result of the newest outpost of his newest venture, Frankie’s Italian Bar and Grill. His exciting new Italian restaurants are somewhat old news in their original London habitats, but now Frankie’s places are somewhere else. A place where horseracing is as admired and beloved as anywhere else on the planet. Dubai. In the Oasis Beach Tower Frankie’s newest outpost recently opened, and with it comes the traditional familial and comforting atmosphere that brought the success to the first four outposts. His partner in these ventures is none other than Marco Pierre White, who is not only the youngest chef to ever receive three Michelin stars, but also one of the original bad boy chefs and revolutionaries in England when it comes to cooking. A personality in his own right, his collaboration with Frankie packs a wallop to not only palates, but to people’s good times. For Frankie, the races keep on coming, as do the opportunities to capitalize on his fame. For some it is just about accomplishment, but for others, it is also due to their genuine likeability and desire to run out front. Whether it be video games, yogurt, betting tips, or restaurants, we hope Frankie takes his time before he decides to dismount the horse.

PARADISE ON THE PALM

hen two of the world’s leading developers team up, usually the result of their work is something monumental. However, it is rare that this
type of collaboration occurs in a time and a place where every project is astounding and revolutionary. This just happens to be the case with the Trump International Hotel and Tower Dubai. The place is Dubai. The specific locale: the famed Palm Jumeirah, the iconic, man-made island in the heart of the Arabian Gulf. And the two parties involved are none other than Nakheel, the group responsible for the Palm Jumeirah, as well as the infamous World development, and the Trump Organization, a group synonymous worldwide with luxury and indulgence. The Trump Dubai is special for a number of reasons. When it comes to the rapid development of Dubai’s incredible projects, Nakheel, lead by Executive Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, and Chief Executive Officer Chris O’Donnell, has set the standard for what constitutes attention worthy. Their projects have attracted a list of buyers that reads like a “who’s who” list of the world’s most powerful, elite, wealthy, and sophisticated. In a city where every project is meant to turn heads and outdo its predecessor, their position is most certainly cemented at the top of the food chain. What else would you expect from “The Donald” besides a breathtaking property, and a press worthy party?

Trump Tower NEW:10jan

Then there is Trump. Everyone is familiar with the personality. Everyone is aware of the brand. Opinions differ on whether some of the actions and statements equate with pomp or personality. One issue, however, is not debatable. His projects are unique, luxurious, sophisticated, and every bit as spectacular as the world’s other leading developers. The Trump touch adds a bit of panache. It adds a bit of attention. And in a place like Dubai, where everyone is fighting for attention, it certainly doesn’t hurt. The kick off and celebration for this project between the two groups was held in New York City on Monday June 23rd, and the launch party lived up to all of the hype and was certainly a reflection of the excellence the tower will exhibit when it opens in the summer of 2011. The red carpet event was held at the Park Avenue Plaza, with all the traditional bells and whistles. Manal Shaheen, Director of Sales, Marketing and Customer Service for Nakheel felt that New York was the perfect place for an event of this stature. “NYC was the ideal setting for an event of this magnitude and the introduction of the Trump International Hotel and Tower Dubai,” he said. He was joined in celebration by a cast of characters that only added to glamour and glitz of the spectacle. A roster of personalities and celebrities were on hand that included Donald J. Trump, Demi Moore, Naomi Watts, Heidi Klum, Ivanka Trump, Melania Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Amy Sacco, Cynthia Rowley, Jonathon Tisch, Andrew Saffir, Dennis Basso, David Koch, Pamela Fiori, Irina Dvorovenko, Maxim Belotserkovsky, Aby Rosen, Samantha Boardman, Eric Villency, and Kimberly Guilfoyle. This group, joined by many more guests – including 100Thousand Club editor Harlan Davis – enjoyed cocktails under a 60-foot dome created exclusively for the event. Shaheen dubbed the celebration a “huge success.” A rendering of what the tower will look like from its perch on the Palm Jumeirah. It will be the tallest structure on the island project

After a short introduction by Donald himself, all the guests mingled in the lavish environment that was created by celebrity event producer David Monn. Within the dome, 360-degree videos and photographs of Dubai were projected on the circular enclave’s ceiling, and all of the guests were able to glimpse the tower from a highly detailed model in a room adjacent to the main party. It was a perfect event to kick off what will certainly Below: Donald Trump, wife Melania and Heidi Klum launch the new Trump international Hotel and Tower on the man made island Palm Jumeirah in Dubai Right: Donald's daughter Ivanka Trump and model Heidi Klum

be a pinnacle of the Dubai skyline, and a benchmark for future towers. In terms of luxury hotels and residential towers, this highly anticipated new build will be talked about for the next few years, and also represents Trump’s first project in the region. We think a 62-story stainless steel and glass tower that will be the Palm’s largest is a grand way to start.

While she may make it sound easy, her role as the Managing Director of the fair, which she took on in 2007, is a challenge as broad in scope as she has experienced in her career. She wears several hats in her daily work, from fundraising and PR to meeting the collectors around the region and networking for the fair, as well as day-to-day project management, including administration, human resources, and finance. The fair hopes to double in size in 2008, and Asmaa’s hiring was a large part of that effort. Though she is young and female, as she points out, “the Minister of Economy is a woman in the UAE so it is no big deal here whether a woman is in charge or not.” The fair attracts a diverse group of collectors with a similarly cosmopolitan outlook, “a mix of local and international art lovers. We have a large number of collectors from the Gulf and India/Pakistan but also an equal number coming from London and New York. Since the galleries are so mixed and international they attract their own following from their own countries, and hence the visitors to the fair seem to come from all over rather than from one predominant country.”

Investment Opportunity in Southern California
S
Southern California has long been one of the world’s most highly-valued real estate markets. The region offers a warm, dry climate, unparalleled entertainment, shopping, restaurants and proximity to seashore, desert and mountains. The names of many communities in greater Los Angeles are recognized worldwide and have become bywords for glamour and natural beauty: Beverly Hills, Malibu, Pasadena, Santa Barbara. Investors interested in participating in this market now have a buying opportunity. An unprecedented number of extraordinary properties are available for purchase. The major reasons for this are the effects of the wider US housing crisis and recent weakness in the US economy. For investors it is worth noting that high-end properties, while affected by the market malaise, have not suffered the dramatic drop in value that some lower-

MALTA – A MEDITERRANEAN PROPERTY DESTINATION
F
For over 200 years, between the ninth and 11th centuries, Malta, the smallest and southern-most member of the European Union, was under Arab rule. Little has survived in terms of architecture, but the country’s language is the only one of Semitic origin to be written with the Latin alphabet and the placenames of many towns and villages sound Semitic. The Maltese Islands are situated in the middle of the Mediter-
ranean, 93 km from Sicily and 288 km from North Africa. The archipelago consists of six islands of which the largest, Malta, is 390 km2 and the second largest, Gozo, is 65 km2. With a homogenous population of over 400,000, its own identity and highly entrepreneurial flair, Malta has a history that spans over 7,000 years. Malta is a major tourist destination thanks to its climate and history. Mediterranean island life is leisurely, safe and varied. If you are a non-resident, or have not lived on the islands for five years consecutively, there are a number of conditions you have to comply with to buy a property in Malta or Gozo. Your estate agent will advise you on the details. According to Geoffrey Ciantar, General Manager of real estate agents Coldwell Banker Malta: “Malta is an ideal destination for property investment, with a large portfolio available and new stock continually coming onto the market.” He points to a vibrant local economy, with foreign investment including a SmartCity Malta IT hub, meaning demand for property is set to remain strong.

King of the wild frontier
A
prominent member of a family of influential and forwardthinking Emiratis, Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum is part of a dynasty that has brought Dubai into the future. Born in a traditional Arab fort in Shindagha, an area of Dubai
located between Dubai’s Creek and the sea, he attended school in Dubai, he studied in England and went on to study at the University of Denver in the United States. He is the son & brother of two previous emirs, and uncle to current Emir Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, but has been justly influential in his own right in his role as the chairman of Emirates Airline, a position he has held since 1985. He holds various posts in the aviation industry such as the presidency of the Department of Civil Aviation, and is also involved in a variety of civic roles, including the Dubai Shopping Festival and Summer Surprises events, two Dubai golf clubs, and many others. In his dual capacities as a member of the royal family and an important businessman in his own right, he has a great deal of interaction with the Western world, doing work and attending conferences on all the various topics of his concern in the US, Europe, and Asia. He additionally receives Westerners, from hotel executives to the Mayor of Houston in Dubai, welcoming interaction with foreigners and helping facilitate business around the world. He is also much honored in formal ceremonies around the world, receiving awards in business and the hospitality industry, even including a French Commandeur de l’Ordre de la Legion d’Honneur, an award he received in December of 2003. As one of Dubai’s undeniable movers and shakers, it’s not hard to see how he’s built Emirates Airline into one of the biggest airlines in the world, doubling in size every four years; it is one of the top ten largest international carriers in the world and experts expect it may be bigger than British Airways by the end of the decade. Supply and demand is the law of Dubai; as it has become a major business capital the city has grown and expanded in every direction: retail, hospitality, construction, tourism, and more, and

“Our customers are already making more than 7000 calls a month from our in-seat phones, so we will be making life easier for those for whom staying in touch has become an important part of their everyday lives,” says Sheikh Ahmed. However, he insists that passengers will be expected to adhere to a strict on-board etiquette. For those frequent fliers for whom air travel is the last vestige of quiet, cabin staff have full control over the system, including the ability to prevent calls at certain times such as during night flights. Although the airline industry has certainly faltered in recent years, Sheikh Ahmed is keen to look on the positive side of things. The company’s strategy is simple—a double dose of marketing strategy and calculated expansion. He sees potential in much of the world’s market. This year the company is adding services to China, the US, South Africa and India, and outside of the airline operations Emirates Hotels and Resorts,

a subsidiary company of the airline also under his purview continues to grow strongly – they have opened two new properties in Dubai in the last six months, with additional properties due to open in Australia and the Seychelles in the next two years. Emirates made a name for itself all over the world by spending millions on naming rights for very public venues. Sheikh Ahmed is a sporting man of the first degree, and the airline became involved in sponsorships in 1987, just two years after he helped found it. The airline has been instrumental in building the status of the Dubai Rugby Sevens, the annual Dubai Desert Classic, the Dubai World Cup, which is the world's richest horse race, the Dubai leg of the World Offshore Powerboat Championship, the Emirates Airline Cricket Cup, and more. Additionally, Emirates has located themselves firmly within their cultural history by becoming the primary sponsor of Godolphin, the legendary Arabian stable, whose reputation they have spread all over the world as they raise their profile at home. However, Emirates’ sponsorship portfolio has also expanded overseas, getting seriously involved in events like the Emirates World Series Racing Championship, the Cricket World Cup, the Rugby League World, Tennis Canada, tennis Opens in Malaysia, Africa, Japan, Australia, and Hong Kong. ong Kong is a thriving modern city. One of the foremost centers of the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong is the city with the most skyscrapers and is a global eco-
nomic center. Often described as where ‘East meets West,’ Hong Kong also boasts an intriguing culture and history. Among the city’s many attributions, it is especially known as being the home of many outstanding luxury hotels and suites. On your next trip to Hong Kong, we recommend a suite of unparalleled magnificence, design, comfort, and convenience. For all of this, look no further than the contemporary InterContinental Hong Kong’s Presidential Suite. The InterContinental Hong Kong is highly revered as one of the world’s top hotels. Nestled in the Hong Kong skyline, the InterContinental’s stunning design is sleek and inviting. Well suited for business and leisure, the hotel features two top restaurants, a central location on the Kowloon waterfront, a feng shui inspired Spa, and unequaled views of Victoria Harbor and Hong Kong Island. There are 495 guest rooms, along with an additional 92 suites sharing a panorama of the harbor. The hotel is also within walking distance to many of the city’s most impressive attractions. It is not a surprise that one of Asia’s, and even the world’s most impressive suites can be found in this extravagant environment. Newly opened in 2006, the $2.5 million dollar Presidential suite at the InterContinental spans over 7,000 square feet with a 2,500 square feet wrap-around terrace. The suite’s décor offers intimacy in this large area, resulting in a spacious, luxurious haven well above Hong Kong’s bustling streets. From this privileged location, the guests can look out over the city and witness a view typically seen only from the elevation of Victoria Peak. And in this unique suite, the view can be enjoyed from within the private gym, the living room through its 2-storey floor-to-ceiling windows, from a seat along the terrace, or while swimming in the terrace’s infinity pool or Jacuzzi. The rooms are sleek, modern, and tasteful; the InterContinental ensures that expectations (and beliefs) are quickly exceeded.

Watch the lights of Hong Kong from the privacy of your own paradise. The expert design of the sophisticated enclave allow for a breathtaking panorama from nearly every room, as well as a feeling of enormity in your personal space. In the end, it is hardly the many rooms, or the expertly fashioned facilities, the impeccable design or the intense view that matter. It is the way that living in this space makes a guest feel that qualifies this suite as a near addiction. It is difficult to imagine that a hotel room could make a person feel alive, but the Presidential Suite does just that. The InterContinental takes care to leave little out of a stay in their best room. The suite has 5 bedrooms, a duplex living room, and a private kitchenette. Relaxation is easily found within the suite’s private study, or under the high ceilings throughout the various rooms. Tastefully designed and decorated, the Presidential Suite is furnished with comfortable, deluxe pieces. There is top- quality equipment found in the latest design of technology; the rooms are outfitted with new entertainment systems suitable for personal enjoyment or for entertaining in numbers. In fact, the suite accommodates up to 36 people for dinner and 60 people for cocktail parties. There is a great deal of attention to detail in the design and decoration of the many rooms, which translates into a wonderful, bright, modern space. The suite is so well equipped, a guest finds himself simultaneously immersed in the comforts of home and the luxury of an exotic vacation. This same feeling of exoticism carries throughout the hotel to the I-Spa, a contemporary facility that provides ancient Chinese rituals of relaxation and caters well to individual privacy. The hotel’s two celebrity restaurants add to the ambience as well. The acclaimed chef Nobu Matsuhisa offers modern Japanese cuisine at NOBU, found on the hotel’s second floor. The InterContinental also features SPOON by Alain Ducasse. The cuisine at SPOON is undeniably the product of one of the world’s most awarded chefs. Guests can enjoy drinks with a view in the Lobby Lounge, or dinner in two more of the hotel’s

he Greeks, Romans, French, and Italians— all the pleasure-seeking peoples of the world—shaped the Cote d’Azur, also called the French Riviera, over centuries of growth
and change. The Mediterranean climate and bright blue waters have been an attraction since time immemorial, from fisherman looking for a welcoming port to the musicians and artists looking for a creative haven, to the rock stars, celebrities, businessmen, and jetsetters who have continued the areas’ legacy as a playground for those who want to get away from the world.
St. Tropez When you look at the sweeping curves of the Burj alArab, you may see many things represented in the tower’s fame and stature. The architecture of the building itself, however, was inspired by the yachts of St. Tropez, one of the jewels of the Riviera and a perennial favorite with vacationers from all over the Middle East. The Greco-Roman fishing village of St. Tropez in the South of France would hardly recognize itself today, in its current incarnation as one of the hottest destinations in the world. The first hint of the glamour to come began in the late 19th century and evolved over several decades: Paul Signac painted the light here, Coco Chanel popularized the suntan here, the writer Colette was drawn to the gorgeous landscapes, and most importantly, Roger Vadim and Brigitte Bardot came to film here in the 1950s, which truly brought the city into the public eye. Starlet Brigitte Bardot made it her second home during the height of her fame, and the press followed her to the sleepy town, transforming it into an international hotspot. Though she still lives there to this day, a new generation of celebrities have adopted the town as the port of choice for their mega-yachting lifestyles, mostly thanks to a huge public relations push in the late 1990s. Rappers and rock stars made the town a household name, and a popular site for everything from paparazzi snaps to music videos – as well as, of course, some of the summer’s hottest parties. Wealthy vacationers from all over the world come here to partake in the social scene; many choose to buy second homes here, or simply to vacation on land or at sea.

The beautiful beaches of the Cote d’Azur draw everyone to the coast, and public and private beaches alike are gorgeous beyond imagining. But it’s as much about beautiful people as beautiful views in this part of the world, and the beach clubs are the daytime centers of life on St. Tropez. Arguably the hottest of all these spots is Club 55, an international A-list of celebrities and the über-wealthy, so public that some locals and longtime visitors avoid the scene during the biggest months of July and August. A feature of Mediterranean cities, Nice has numerous public squares for performances, shows, and outdoor cafes and terraces. The main square of the city is the Place Massena, formed by traditional red ochre Italian building, lined with palm trees and stone pines and connecting the old town and the modern city. This artistic city also has several important museums, from the Chagall museum celebrating the artist and the city he so loved, to the contemporary art museum featuring French and American avant-garde art, to the Beaux Arts museum of 19th and 20th century art. And of course, the most beautiful sight of all is the coast from the Promenade de Anglais itself, overlooking the clear blue sea.

get out and mingle; nightclubs are hugely popular especially during the high season, and perennial favorites like Disco Le Sept and Jane’s Club have something for everyone. The choicest destination for those visiting the film festival is the Cap d’Antibes, but it is also a vacation destination in its own right, one the most exclusive spots on the Riviera. The 48 beautiful beaches and picturesque walks through the mountainous pine forests and scenic parks are the area’s natural attraction, as well as various cultural events throughout the year. The cuisine is standard French based around shockingly fresh seafood, and the nightlife centers around Juan les Pins and Casino La Siesta, where you can dance the summer nights away. By far the biggest attraction to the area, however, is the hotel Cap d’Antibes. Since it opened for the summer season in 1923, it was transformed from a quiet seaside retreat to one of the most glamorous hotels in the whole of the Riviera. The property is actually two hotels in one: the majestic Hotel du Cap and the exclusive seaside suites of the Eden Roc annex. The entire estate is hidden inside a 25acre pine forest on the rocky coast, but the setting is hardly rustic. The Hotel du Cap’s understated grandeur mixes classic French furniture with modern luxuries like plasma screens and huge bathrooms, while the Eden Roc is airy, modern with monochromatic white seaside suites and private terraces. Daytime action is at the pool, a heated aquamarine oasis blending seamlessly with the sea. As you sit on your mattress looking out of the Cote d’Azur, cold drink in hand and invisible, impeccable hands seeing to your every need, think about the generations of people who have walked the cobbled streets before you, and the beautiful people surrounding you, and it will be instantly clear why the deep blue sea of the French Riviera draws people back over and over again. ML: Yes, I’ve been living in Dubai for the past three years. Why Dubai? Probably because it’s the fastest growing city in the world and it’s very westernized for a city in the Gulf. In addition to all the advantages that Dubai offers, it’s tax free – we pay absolutely no tax in Dubai and on the other hand the infrastructure is amazing, who can beat that? OTC: What else do you spend time doing in the Middle East? Where do you like to go for fun when you’re there? OTC: Where do you like to travel? What are your favorite hotels around the world and what do you like about them? Finally, you did say dream dinner – I wouldn’t say no to going on a date with Angelina Jolie. We all agree that she is stunning, but overall she seems like an interesting woman. OTC: What is the main difference between American women and European women? ML: It’s funny that you ask this question, because it was the topic of a recent discussion I had. American women go on dates and it is apparently accepted to date more than one person at a time.

Jewelry and fashion are some of the top sellers during the festival.
Of course, some old favorites have returned as well, including eight central events from the early days of the festival. The World of Stories, the Kid’s Fashion Week, and the Kid’s Olympic Games are all events aimed at the young, with dramatic retellings of fairytales from Eastern and Western cultures, the latest in children’s clothing, and games galore to burn off all that extra energy. For the adults, there is a fashion show of traditional clothing, an event called Min Bladi Al Emarat, which is a major attraction focusing on traditional Emirati culture grouped around a series of competitions to create the best displays of local food and culture, and The Collectors, which is a chance to peek at some of the region’s greatest collections of everything from pop culture memorabilia to historic artifacts. Photography and art exhibitions are also traveling through the malls, from a variety of regional artists, complete with judging and prizes. The early weeks of the events received a huge response, and we are looking forward to seeing more of what the city of Dubai has to offer. In a city that is primarily recognized for its real estate and astounding residential projects, this influx of culture and entertainment is defining Dubai as not only a destination to frolic on the beach or enjoy exquisite resorts, but also to revel in entertainment not found in many other destinations.

T
he sport of golf has long been equated with a luxury lifestyle. Yes, it is a game for those from all walks of life. However, many of the best
courses, clubs, communities, and locales that host the most luxurious venues for the game cater towards those with financial means. In many ways – especially in the last couple decades – golf has become a component of lifestyle, and in turn, a much larger part of big business. The Middle East is one place where

a destination. Dubai is the most popular golf destination to date, earning revenues just under 7 million EUR this past year, and the UAE is undergoing extensive development, with an estimated 20 new golf courses in the making. The highly anticipated Tiger Woods Dubai is among these golf courses to be, and it represents the luxury and technical difficulty golfers seek in a good course. Other destinations, such as Turkey and Cyprus, are growing exponentially, painting a bright picture for the future of the golf business in the Middle East. The implications of the success of Middle Eastern golf courses are enormous for those in the business. As the courses reach even higher earnings, the standard of quality for a golf course also rises. These high standards are manifesting in new facilities and top-class amenities to pair with the course. The traditional golfing destinations of the UK and Ireland find clients shifting interests towards the desert sands, drawn by the quality and growing popular opinion of the courses. The Golf Benchmark Survey does not necessarily forecast doom for courses outside of the Middle East. High earnings across many countries show the support for the game of golf in many different settings. Some interesting findings have become apparent with this survey. Countries like Norway, Sweden, Spain and South Africa have among the highest numbers for club memberships, with Germany closely following. Membership rates for these countries average around 1,000 per club.
