PRINT Is Meaningful “At our very core, we are a tactile species,” declares Daniel Dejan, Print & Creative Manager at Sappi Etc. “Our sense of touch is highly developed, and we seek that tactile experience. We need it.” In fact, the neuroscience of touch has proven that as soon as we touch something – such as a print piece – we begin to feel differently about it. We value it more.* “If done well,” Dejan explains, “such as with special effects and excellent paper, print is very meaningful to us. It can even become a treasure.” To get the facts about

LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER | SHOULD BRANDING BE RED OR BLUE? In our deeply polarized country, should companies take political positions or express social values in their advertising and branding?

GORDON KAYE IS THE PUBLISHER OF GDUSA Comments, suggestions and letters can be sent to gkaye @ gdusa.com.

The annual Harris Poll on the Reputation of America’s 100 Most Visible Companies says there are risks and rewards. On the one hand, the respected poll finds that Americans, especially of the Millennial persuasion, increasingly expect companies to take a stance on today’s hot button issues. On the other hand, taking a position can alienate large swaths of people who disagree and it can also make a company vulnerable to scrutiny as to whether its practices meet its proclamations. Wendy Salomon, Harris VP reputation management and public affairs, describes the conundrum: “In such divided times, as companies scurry to figure out if and how to respond to the issues and commentary of the new administration, we find that corporate reputation perceptions can be just as polarizing. Companies that have taken very public stands for their beliefs are rewarded by consumers of similar conservative or liberal views, but there is also clear risk among those who feel otherwise.” Think Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-A, Target, Audi. Mark J. Penn of The Harris Poll’s parent, concludes: “Values play a bigger role than ever before in corporate reputation, and the business significance of a company’s reputation has never been higher. Consumers are keenly interested in how companies engage with the world, and that includes corporate ideals. As the red versus blue duel of politics impacts corporate reputation, we expect to see more alignment along party beliefs.” AT LEAST YOU ARE NOT TAKATA Speaking of risks to a brand or company, the same Harris Poll also compiled the most damaging scenarios to reputation. For anyone who runs a business or represents one, the list can make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Worst case scenarios? Intentional wrongdoing or illegal actions by corporate leaders; lying about the facts of a product or service; intentional misuse of financial information for financial gain; and security or data breaches. Which company damaged its reputation the most in 2016? Wells Fargo tops the list, followed by Volkswagen and Samsung. At the bottom of the overall rankings are Takata (airbag disaster), Wells Fargo (phony bank accounts) and Goldman Sachs (no comment necessary). Goldman Sachs appears to be an outlier; despite the disdain, it continues to laugh all the way to the bank. NOT EVERYTHING GETS RESOLVED Milt Kaye founded GDUSA in 1963 after years as publisher of PRINT. He passed away at 95 in December. In separate eulogies at his funeral and in GDUSA in print and online, I tried to be frank about my father’s strengths, which were many, and his weaknesses, which were many. Based on your feedback, a couple of ideas from these eulogies especially resonated. First, my being transparent about his personal demons seemed to touch people rather than discomfort them. I think everyone has imperfect relationships with their loved ones — and so often — mothers and fathers. Many of you shared stories about your own complex relationship with now-deceased parents and, for that, I am grateful. Best I can figure, it is all part of the human comedy; we live and love and hope and cope, and not everything can be resolved. Second, many of you enjoyed the observation that Milt respected creative work from all around the country — not just the New York bubble — and insisted from day one that GDUSA be open and welcoming. Believe me, 54 years ago that was a cutting edge idea. Designer Patrick M. Redmond of St. Paul MN makes the point better than I can: “I was sorry to read about the passing of your father. I just wanted you to know what a positive difference his inclusion of designers from ‘the heartland’ such as myself in the Upper Midwest has made ... This is part of your late father’s legacy and influence, as well as your own. To have my efforts as a designer further validated, affirmed and recognized in GDUSA has meant so much to me.” Mr. Redmond was recently keynote speaker for two Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards ceremonies at the University of Minnesota Minneapolis. “Of note,” he said, “I had my GDUSA bibliography available as a handout for the next generation of creatives ... I just wanted to express my gratitude to your late father for the vision of inclusion.”

FRESH | PENTAGRAM ADDS A SIDE OF HUMOR TO DELI BRANDING

WASHINGTON DC On Rye is a new sandwich shop that updates

Jewish deli classics with natural, wholesome ingredients and unexpected recipes. The fast-casual restaurant gives traditional dishes a modern twist, serving up a menu that includes Wagyu pastrami on gluten-free bread, vegetarian smoked beet and portobello Reubens, oven-roasted vegetable latkes, and a babka ice cream sandwich, as well as standards like matzoh ball soup and an egg cream “that’s to die for.” Pentagram’s Michael Bierut, the partner-in-charge, and associate Jesse Reed, designed branding that puts a contemporary spin on the straightforward, no-nonsense graphics and imagery found in traditional Jewish delis, with a side of humor. The program extends to the website, packaging, environmental graphics and swag. The pragmatic approach of traditional deli graphics inspired an elemental logotype set in a strong Franklin Gothic, in stacked or horizontal configurations. The simple black-and-white color palette is set off by vivid photography of the menu items. For the images, the designers enlisted the photographer Bobby Doherty, known for his colorful food photography. Detailed, almost hyper-real shots put the food front and center, celebrating the healthful ingredients. pentagram.com

FRESH | AND THE ACADEMY MEMBERSHIP GOES TO …

WASHINGTON DC Becoming a card-carrying member of

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a prestigious honor. However, in recent years, the organization has seen a significant drop in member engagement and wanted to reverse the trend. Design Army took that challenge head on and created an experience around becoming a new member — welcoming each person into this exclusive club with a gift engineered to inform and entice. Delivered in a crisp black box with the gold Academy logo debossed on the top cover and a white wrap with the words “And the Academy Membership Goes to …” a new member will open the package and be transported to another world. Every item has a unique shape, color, texture, and purpose, along with touches of movie themes applied throughout. By providing practical tools like a planner with key dates already in the calendar and more fun souvenirs, the kit conjures up nostalgic memories of old Hollywood and past Oscars — an homage to the past and valuable resource for now. Perhaps the best news of all: Faye Dunaway, Warren Beatty and PricewaterhouseCoopers are nowhere involved in the presentation. designarmy.com

FRESH | HIGH TIDE LIFTS DIG INN RESTAURANT CHAIN

NEW YORK NY Dig Inn is a fast casual restaurant chain that features

locally sourced ingredients, shared tables and “building community through food.” High Tide, based in Brooklyn NY, was asked to develop a fresh branding to facilitate the restaurant’s expansion to new locations. Creative Director Danny Miller, who founded the agency, explains that the designers “drew inspiration from the cozy minimalism of Scandinavian design to create a sophisticated and dynamic identity system that more accurately reflects their mission and ethos as they continue to grow.” The identity has been applied across a range of collateral, including menus, signage, packaging, and Dig Inn interiors. In addition to Miller, High Tide is headed by managing director Jill Cole. hightidenyc.com

FRESH | NEW BOOK DISPLAYS THE PHAIDON 500

LONDON UK Graphic: 500 Designs that Matter

is a book that celebrates the long, rich history of graphic design. Derived from the acclaimed Phaidon Archive of Graphic Design/2012, a stunning box of cards (which has been sitting on the GDUSA editorial desk for years), this new compact compendium features 1,000 color images and pairs visually interesting examples side-by-side with an explanatory timeline in the back of the book. Spanning over 600 years, the book includes examples from Buddhist texts from 1377 and Morse Code to the Apple logo and Shepard Fairey’s Obama “Hope” poster, and many more cutting-edge magazines, advertisements, and ephemera of yesterday and today. Emilia Terragni, who edits design books at Phaidon Press, consulted with artists and designers worldwide to settle on a canon of work for the original archival box. The new book provides the same images in a different order to show intriguing ways that certain styles and themes appear throughout time and across geography. A chronological index in the back offers a brief synopsis of each design. www.phaidon.com

FRESH | NICKELODEON REFRESH MIXES CHARACTERS AND KIDS

NEW YORK NY Nickelodeon has debuted a brand refresh of its on-air and online look and feel that seeks to deliver on

the network’s mission to make the world a more playful place. Created with creative agency Superestudio, based in Buenos Aires, the look features an array of kids interacting with the real world and well-known Nick characters in surprising and surreal mixes of live-action and graphics. This includes roughly 300 deliverables, including bumpers, IDs, promo toolkits and graphic developments. The visual narrative was executed by combining real kids with 2D and 3D graphics to create imaginative reinterpretations of Nick properties and characters, such as turning SpongeBob’s face into a tongue-twisted fun zone. The familiar orange logo is now set against a brighter color palette including purple, light blue, lime and cream. Utilizing the modern sans-serif Galano Grotesque Black, the refresh also uses color to create, contrast and codify on-air messaging. “We really wanted to highlight how much surprise and fun is a part of kids’ everyday lives, so we took as our inspiration the surreal nature of GIFs, memes and emoticons and created an entire new visual vocabulary,” says Michael Waldron, Senior VP Creative Director Art and Design for Nickelodeon Group and Nick@Nite. PEOPLE | CHERMAYEFF & GEISMAR & HAVIV CELEBRATE 60TH ANNIVERSARY

CHERMAYEFF & GEISMAR & HAVIV NEW YORK NY

Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv is celebrating its 60th anniversary, making it one of the most enduring completely independent firms in the graphic design industry. The firm is behind many of the world’s most recognizable trademarks and symbols including the NBC peacock, Chase Bank’s blue octagon, and Mobil Oil’s red “O”. Since 1957, it has pioneered the modern movement of idea-driven graphic design across disciplines, specializing in brand identities, exhibitions, print and motion graphics, and art in architecture. Their work, it is fair to say, has helped define graphic design with its signature synthesis of Modernism and commercial pragmatism. With a global reach, Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv is led by its founding partners, designers Ivan Chermayeff and Tom Geismar, along with partner and designer Sagi Haviv who joined the firm in 2003, and principal designer Mackey Saturday. The firm has garnered design awards from every major industry organization; this includes, most recently, The Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement to Tom Geismar and Ivan Chermayeff for their impact on the American visual landscape through the creation of some of the world’s most famous logos, museums and art in architecture. She also continues to oversee the creative team in all advertising, brand identity, and digital campaigns. Agency clients include SlimFast, Miele, Petro Home Services, Jennifer Convertibles, Physique 57, PIRCH, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC. Harari joined BARKER in 2006, a rare female creative director at that time, and her talents and experience in health and beauty, fashion, film, and other lifestyle marketing verticals has helped elevate BARKER in account and award wins. Previously, Harari ran her own boutique firm where clients included Alliance, Atlantic Records, MTV, P&G, Lions Gate Films, and GlaxoSmithKline. Earlier, she was at Grey Entertainment, where she created destination-specific launches for W Hotels, as well as campaigns for Uproar.com, Department of Sanitation, Bravo Network, InStyle Magazine, and Topps. Harari’s leadership is not confined to the office: a mother of two, she’s a visible force in her children’s school communities and was recently honored in the “She Runs It Working Mothers of the Year Awards,” which recognizes outstanding mothers in marketing and media who have served as strong role models.

HIGHEST HONORS 2017 TOP DESIGN SCHOOLS

In the February 2017 magazine, which kicked off our 54th year of publishing, GDUSA released its annual Students To Watch roundup. Now we’ve compiled a list of our favorite institutions that prepare students to work in professional graphic design, based on a mix of objective and subjective factors, including our own decades long relationships with designers, students, recruiters, educators. The list is alphabetical. The reach is national. The theme is practical but profound. Education is more important than ever as the lines between the studio and the classroom, the office and the academy, the university and society, continue to blur. And as students and educators have more impact than ever on the changing shape of design, technology, media and culture.

EXTENDED COLOR GAMUT CONTEST SPONSORED BY PANTONE

Designers are able to get more vibrant colors and closer matches to Pantone Spot colors using the new PANTONE Extended Gamut Guide. This latest development in process printing technology allows for up to 90% closer Pantone Spot color matches by adding Orange, Green, and Violet (CMYKOGV) to the color gamut, (CMYK can only match about 55%). This contest invited winners of GDUSA's American Graphic Design Awards 'Creative Use of Color' category to use the Extended Gamut Guide and seven-color printing process to make their award-winning artwork even more impactful.

The grand prize winner is Daniel Frumhoff, an award-winning graphic designer with an emphasis in typography. The insert accompanying this story provides additional information about Daniel, and displays his original winning piece in CMYK, and then how it is enhanced using the Extended Gamut Guide and seven-color printing process. The insert is printed using an HP Indigo digital press and the HP IndiChrome system. Regarding the experience, Daniel says, “The difference is definitely noticeable! After comparing my winning piece using CMYK versus using Extended Gamut, I found the Extended Gamut to be more accurate to the colors on screen and also much richer richer in range. Overall, the colors look great in the 7C print! The hues from the digital artwork on screen are represented very well in the final printed piece. Going forward, I will absolutely explore this 7C process printing in commercial projects. I think it is a great alternative to CMYK when I need a larger and more precise range of colors and can’t afford to use spot colors.” The following are the five honorable mentions, all of whom were also award winners in the ‘Creative Use of Color’ category, and who then excelled in using the Extended Gamut Guide and seven-color printing process to enhance their awardwinning artwork. Each piece is shown in four color here, though each honorable mention received a copy of the artwork in seven-color as well as a PANTONE Extended Gamut Guide as a prize.

GDLOFT has received recognition from the likes of AIGA, HOW, PRINT, CA, Graphis, UCDA, GDUSA, Gestalten Press, and Princeton Architectural Press, and its work has been displayed in museums worldwide. What was the impetus for your award-winning design? The piece was conceptualized as an identity package for Philadelphia Mural Arts and Artist Katarina Grosse’s Public Art project in Philadelphia, psychylustro. Contemporary art can be alienating to the everyday person, so our approach centers on “the artist explaining/talking directly to the city” to break this boundary. The visual approach reflects our understanding of the artists’ conceptual process — hence blurring foreground and background. Can you tell us why you chose the colors you did? Because the work had not yet been made at the time of designing the promotional materials, we chose colors that were reflective of the palette commonly used by the artist. Katarina Grosse uses vibrant colors, so we selected colors that were representative of her work.

What was the impetus for your award-winning design? We designed the packaging for Sierra Del Sol Organic Agua Fresca Paletas. The design resonates with Southern California consumers and packs a powerful fruity punch in the freezer case. With such deliciously innovative flavor combinations, the design deserved a vibrant, energetic look. Therefore, the overarching goal was to create a colorful, hip package design that is reflective of the innovative fruit bar flavors and Latin heritage. Can you tell us why you chose the colors you did? Color is a huge component of this design. We wanted to really capture its Latin heritage as well as create a ‘pop’ on shelves. Each design has a vibrant colored wood texture with a title and text overlay in complimentary colors. It was important to make the fruit ingredient combinations stand out. The colors were chosen specifically to resonate with ingredients of each paleta. The end result is bold and vibrant. Do you typically use Pantone products in your projects and has your experience with Pantone been positive? In our line of work, we use Pantone colors all the time in our packaging projects. What was the impetus for your award-winning design? “War and Peace” was our firm’s 2016 New Year’s card. The design was motivated by terrorist attacks on the Bataclan Theater in Paris and the earlier Paris attack on the publishing offices of Charlie Hebdoe. The intention was to invite reflection and dialogue. The tricolor French flag is blended with smoke and the distressed visage of a child, and the phrase “… et solidarité” (“…and solidarity”) is an evocation of the national motto of France “liberté, egalité, fraternité” (“liberty, equality, fraternity”). Can you tell us why you chose the colors you did? Red, white and blue are the colors of the flag of France; black is a color or mourning. Purple (Pantone 2112 XCG) is a blend of red and blue and evokes solemnity, dignity and peace. Do you typically use Pantone products in your projects and has your experience with Pantone been positive? Yes, I use Pantone colors exclusively; can’t design without PMS. As for spot colors, I use them occasionally; most of my non-profit clients have a limited budget. What was your experience using the Pantone Extended Gamut Guide and seven-color printing process? My work tends to be very colorful, and I care passionately about getting exactly the colors I want. I am thus excited about the 7C process color, and will no doubt use it often in the future.

She served as president of the AAF New Mexico in the 2012-2013 year and is currently a board member. She also serves on the New Mexico Kids Matter Inc. Board of Directors.

What was the impetus for your award-winning design? Each year we produce the Annual Report for the Catholic Foundation. In 2015, we suggested using the work of a local artist for the cover image since there is a local resurgence of Spanish Colonial Art in New Mexico. Because gold leaf is often used in the original artwork we thought it might be a great idea to use foils stamping in the process to really make the piece shine. Can you tell us why you chose the colors you did? The color choices derived from the original artwork. We went in and took swatches from the artwork and saturated them so that they complimented the artwork and pushed the theme through the annual report. Do you typically use Pantone products in your projects and has your experience with Pantone been positive? I often use Pantone products. My experience is always positive. It is the absolute best way to get accurate color and also get buy-in from clients regarding color. I sometimes use spot PMS colors; typically only one or two spot colors in a project.

What was your experience using the Pantone Extended Gamut Guide and seven-color printing process? With this particular piece I wanted to achieve a color that is boldest and truest to the original artwork. The cover art really needed to pop and at the same time we needed to keep the colors on the interior of the book true to what the client chose. 7C process can be a very valuable tool especially in this type of project where you are trying to reach true color. What was the impetus for your award-winning design? La PanzanellaÂŽ CroccantiniÂŽ Bites are bite-size, Italian-style snack crackers in three flavors: Italian Herb, Sundried Tomato Basil and Spicy Olive. The impetus for the design was twofold: 1) to create a simple, resealable package for on-the-go snacking that was geared toward the audience of Millennials while remaining appealing to consumers of all ages. 2) To create something with strong visual appeal and a pop of color to better stand out in the competitive landscape. Can you tell us why you chose the colors you did? The three flavors are each represented by a splash of color, purposefully characterizing each flavor description. The simple yet bold, glossy colors printed on the fresh white, matte background are complemented by a clear window to view the crackers inside the pouch. This creates a unique snack package that visually pops off the shelf. Do you typically use Pantone products in your projects and has your experience with Pantone been positive? We use PMS colors in many of our packaging projects to help with brand/product line color consistency. We use Spot/PMS colors in many of our packaging projects to help keep color consistency across our brand. Typically, we will use anywhere from one to four, sometimes more PMS colors in a package design.

Or more succinctly, as Immanuel Kant posited, “the hand is the visible part of the brain.” For communicators, hands are also devices through which others receive our transmissions and color messages in ways we’d do well to understand. Sappi’s groundbreaking book Haptic Brain, Haptic Brand: A Communicator’s Guide to the Neuroscience of Touch, is written in collaboration with renowned neuroscientist Dr. David Eagleman, host of the PBS series The Brain. The Rolland Enviro product line’s contribution to climate change is less than half that of average virgin and 100% recycled papers in North America, and generates the smallest excellent ecological footprint in the market. This helps make Rolland Enviro Print’s multipurpose paper a perfect choice for commercial printing. Not only is it an ecological alternative, but it also has a smooth finish and an impeccable look for color and quality. Available in many text and cover weights, it is used for annual reports, brochures, direct mail and promotional pieces. www.rollandinc.com

AMERICAN PACKAGE DESIGN AWARDS PACKAGING, POP + THE INSTORE EXPERIENCE SPONSORED BY NEENAH PACKAGING

Makers, sellers and marketers are challenged as never before to convey the message, promote the brand, close the deal. Think fragmented audiences, information overload, media clutter, global competition, economic dislocation, changing practices and preferences. Package design and related disciplines are increasingly the difference makers in advancing the brand and influencing the purchasing decision. The outstanding work showcased here — from 200 elite design firms, design departments and production companies — is testimony to this phenomenon. Our annual competition celebrates attractive graphics, of course, but more importantly the power of design to forge an emotional link with the buyer at the moment of truth.

THE POWER OF PACKAGING A MESSAGE FROM NEENAH PACKAGING SPONSOR OF GDUSA’S AMERICAN PACKAGE DESIGN AWARDS

Packaging has always been a utilitarian necessity. For years its principal purpose — labeling and protecting contents for distribution — took precedence over its marketing potential. Today, the package has become an essential tool to convey a product’s image. THE MANY WAYS CREATIVE MANAGERS CAN PROMOTE WORKPLACE HAPPINESS BY DIANE DOMEYER

Here’s some good news for creative managers: Chances are, your team members like what they do.

DO MAKE ROLES INTERESTING AND MEANINGFUL.

Employees who find their work worthwhile are nearly 2.5 times more likely to be happy than those who feel the job they do is “just work.” When delegating tasks, communicate not only the

and interest in their work when compared to legal, technology, administrative, and accounting and finance professionals. But what should you do if your team seems less peppy than usual?

some tips for boosting your team’s emotional wellbeing. DO SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION.

DO’S AND DON’TS TO IMPROVE WORKPLACE HAPPINESS DO PAY ATTENTION TO WORKPLACE CULTURE DURING THE HIRING PROCESS.

If you realize a job candidate may not thrive in your environment after they start working for you, it may be too late. Aim to find new hires who are a good match for your company culture by thoroughly evaluating their interpersonal abilities before extending an offer. A candidate’s resume and portfolio may impress you, but if they can’t fit in, they won’t be happy on the job — and neither will your existing staff.

Managers have a wide spectrum of options when it comes to recognizing creative staff, from writing personalized thank-you notes to hosting a catered lunch. When acknowledging a job well done, be specific. For example: “You really saved the day last week when you stayed late and put the finishing touches on the client proposal … which we won!” Workplace happiness is essential if a creative team wants to thrive. Take steps today to increase your employees’ job satisfaction, and you’ll be rewarded with loyalty, increased productivity and happier clients.

DON’T MICROMANAGE.

Controlling the minutiae of your employees’ work will suffocate and discourage them. Instead, empower staff to offer up ideas and make important decisions, on their own or as a team. Many creative professionals require autonomy and individuality, so give them some slack. Your role is to give guidance, support and feedback.
