Over the years, many of you have told us that our Awards program contributes to your good fight to secure recognition, resources and the freedom to do your job right. Hearing this making me feel warm and fuzzy — like a few shots of single-malt Scotch, a Yankee win, or binge watching Catastrophe — but it is nonsense. achievements a couple of days each year. You are the heroes of a story that unfolds every day. I do not use the term “hero” lightly. All creatives, from firms and agencies to freelancers, are under pressure in a media world that devours content, fragments audiences, shortens attention spans, threatens brands, glorifies immediacy, commoditizes quality. But inhouse designers are presented with an extra challenge because, in addition to all of the above, they often navigate a workplace that does not fully value or understand or invest in the power of creativity. Or in the creative people who make it happen. That said, many of you report that, in 2017, the status of inhouse design is on an upward trajectory. Management is more sophisticated, design is becoming recognized as a strategic asset, designers are winning seats at the proverbial table, new methods of staffing and organizing are being tried, and inhouse positions are more attractive in terms of pay, training, professional development and other practical matters. The broader creative community, too, has come to appreciate its inhouse brothers and sisters with associations, shows, events and, yes, design annuals. And while we’re on a roll, more good news to chew on. It appears that creative professionals — across the board, including inhouse designers — are feeling quite positive about their situation. According to a new study of more than 12,000 U.S. and Canadian workers, individuals in the creative and marketing occupations report the highest levels of on-the-job satisfaction and interest in their work, compared to employees in accounting and finance, administrative, legal, and technology industries. The highest level. The research was conducted by Robert Half (the global staffing firm and parent of our inhouse awards sponsor The Creative Group) and Happiness Works. More on this intriguing finding later this year. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy this special edition and come away agreeing that, indeed, the best inhouse work is the stuff of design annuals.

FRESH | PENTAGRAM GOES BOLD FOR BROOKLYN

BROOKLYN NY Recently opened with great expectations, City Point

is the largest food, shopping and entertainment destination in the center of downtown Brooklyn. The 1.8 million square foot mixed-use development is located along the borough’s busiest retail corridor and, it is hoped, will link downtown to its surrounding neighborhoods. Pentagram’s Michael Gericke and his team designed a bold Brooklyn identity for the project, including brand positioning, advertising, signage and large-scale environmental graphics. The identity is focused on the declaration — BKLYN BORN — celebrating the project’s local engagement, and to express the area’s diversity and inclusiveness. “This is truly a project that is ‘By Brooklyn and for Brooklyn,’” says Gericke, who has been a resident of the borough for over thirty years. Pentagram Associate Partner Don Bilodeau also worked closely on the project with Acadia Realty Trust, which is developing City Point in partnership with Washington Square Partners and Extell Development. www.pentagram.com

FRESH | DIPLOMAT RESORT REVIVES MYSTIQUE OF BYGONE ERA

HOLLYWOOD FL The Diplomat, a venerable resort on the South Florida coast, has been rejuvenated, and that includes branding by the Korn Design team. Principal Denise Korn says that her goal was to bring back the mystique and ethos of a bygone era, while reintroducing the venue as a vibrant hub and destination. Her solution: a combination of “owning the beach” with a new name, The Diplomat Beach Resort, and reinjecting the entire property with a sense of “something new under the sun.” The project included positioning, print, in-room brand integration, and online marketing. Typography is a combination of hand-drawn elements mixed with new cuts of modern typefaces that are intentionally round, friendly, and reminiscent of Modern sensibility. The signature coral color is inspired by the MiMo architectural period of soft but saturated beach palettes. Illustrator Greg Kletsel, a SoFla native, worked with Korn to create a fun campus map that greets guests in their key packets and allows them to explore all of the property’s offerings. BOSTON MA/NEW YORK NY SurveyMonkey has launched a new

People Powered Data™ platform and is repositioning the brand to “Power the Curious.” Orit Peleg, Head of Brand Planning at design firm Eleven explains: “When we were going through the branding exercise with SurveyMonkey, we discovered that curiosity is considered an important form of currency for the future. Similarly to IQ and EQ there’s a Curiosity Quotient that companies should be tapping into ... From there we made sure that the same sense of inquisitive energy was reflected in all of the new visual identity design elements.” Regarding the visual identity, Matt Wakeman, Creative Director, says: “For the logo refresh, it was decided early on that the monkey should be respected. This was because of its simple iconic shape and recognizability … We cleaned up and optimized the logo for a mobile-first digital world by ensuring it could thrive at small sizes.” This included making the symbol symmetrical, enlarging the tuft of hair, and opening up the ear holes to render better at lower screen resolutions. Sun Lee, VP of Brand Experience, SurveyMonkey, who collaborated closely with the agency on the project, sums it up nicely: “In the new look and feel we wanted to bring curiosity to life with nimble copy, vivid photography, and a bright color palette that represents the brand personality: inquisitive, smart, supportive, playful.” eleven.net

and packaging for Atlantico rum, distilled and blended in the Dominican Republic. To elevate the product and the brand, the designers capitalized on the clients’ love of the Caribbean, taking cues from the people, culture and lifestyle — including “the beautiful ceramic tiles found throughout the islands, the sun at Golden Hour, the salt on your skin to the salt on your rim. With those tiles in mind, our mature and established typeface has a faceted element. EWING NJ Trojan, the top selling condom brand in North America,

has introduced a sub-brand intended to be sophisticated and elegant and, as a result, to provide a more comfortable purchase and use experience for women as well as men. Design and branding firm Invok is behind the identity and package design for Trojan XOXO. Richard Shear, Partner and Chief Creative Officer for the firm, explains that the challenge was to create an attractive and discreet presence, using graphics and packaging to rewrite the rules for how both genders carry, store and use condoms. Among the key elements of the solution: an outer sleeve that allows for the removal of the retail graphics; a reusable carton for home storage in an attractive package again with no retail graphics; a matching mini travel pack that holds 1-2 condoms and can be slipped into pocket or purse; a decorated condom foil; and a general visual identity that departs from traditional masculine cues and presents a contemporary gender-neutral perspective. FRESH | BIOMEDICAL IMAGERY BECOMES MODERN ART

NEW YORK NY Despite being a world-class biomedical research institution,

The Rockefeller University has maintained a relatively low profile. They enlisted New York’s C&G Partners to elevate the image and quality of communications materials in order to tell the university’s story. The design firm was asked to highlight the unusual qualities of the institution — whose numerous accolades include 24 Nobel Prizes — through a suite of communication materials including graduate program booklet, scientific prospectus, campus map, annual report, overview brochure and redesigned website. The concept: “Biomedical imagery becomes modern art.” This involved taking actual biomedical imagery generated in the University’s labs and transforming it into art. The studio identified the scientific images and worked with watercolor artist Deborah Ross who created the resulting artistic images. This visual technique became a signature design element for the University’s communications materials, with the juxtaposition of science and art underscoring the essence of the institution as well as referencing the Rockefeller family’s philanthropy and support of the arts. market is fast expanding, and branding and packaging has been marked by cluttered, confusing design. Bloom Farms™ has a different vision, to change the conversation around medical cannabis by promoting the positive and healthy lifestyle of responsible cannabis consumers with a sophisticated and instantly recognizable brand image. In preparation for launch of its Highlighter product, a daytime and nighttime set of medical vaporizer pens, the company turned to Bay Area branding firm Pavement. Explains Michael Hester, Founder and Executive Creative Director: “Bloom Farms wanted to set their brand apart in the medical marijuana market. Research showed that the market is generally producing packaging that appeals to the recreational customer. The Bloom Farms vision is to communicate professionalism and trustworthiness for a product that has a stigma attached.” The project gave Pavement the opportunity to innovate through custom packaging. “The Highlighter Set is a simple, discreet, and stylish cannabis oil vapor pen. The packaging had to signal trust to the customer,” says Hester. The solution: an intricate, well-crafted structure that looks and feels formal, yet has a soft natural appeal, with black foil stamping and a gentle deboss for elegant lettering to convey a high production value, luxurious feel, and sense of legitimacy. The boxed set originally included two varieties; for product differentiation Hester says he turned to Neenah Packaging to specify CLASSIC CREST® Natural White for the daytime Sativa blend and Epic Black for the nighttime Indica blend. NEW YORK NY/LONDON UK Jones Knowles Ritchie New York (JKR) has developed a visual identity system consisting of

brand marks, typography, color, photography and communications for a new haircare brand aimed at a multicultural audience. FORM is the latest product from Tristan Walker, who is also behind Bevel, a shaving kit designed for individuals with coarse or curly hair to help reduce irritation and discomfort. The new collection, which consists of ten products, seeks to make hair care simpler by offering products specifically designed for specific hair needs from coily to curly to natural to relaxed or somewhere in between. JKR also helped select the name, which refers to the customizable combination of ingredients, and it developed the dots-on-a-grid identity system. MARGO CHASE 1958 - 2017 Margo Chase, Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Chase Design Group, died in an aviation accident on Saturday July 22 in Apple Valley CA. In addition to her passion for design, she was an accomplished pilot who loved the art of flying. Chase founded her firm in 1986, building it into one of the most respected and successful. Recognized worldwide, Chase initially trained in biology and veterinary medicine, but discovered graphic design in graduate school. Early on, she had success in the music industry designing packaging for such artists such as Cher, Prince, Madonna, Selena and Bonnie Raitt. Ultimately, her firm expanded to serve many industries and causes, creating branding, packaging and design positioning for the likes of Sun America, Belkin, The CW Network, Bolthouse Farms, Califia Farms, CVS/pharmacy, Discovery Communications, Mattel, Nestlé, Nike, PepsiCo, Procter & Gamble, Quaker, Starbucks, Stila Cosmetics and Target. Among numerous awards, Chase was selected as an AIGA Fellow, an I.D. Magazine “I.D. Forty” and was featured in Communication Arts, Graphis, I.D., HOW, Radical Graphics/ Graphic Radicals, and New Design: Los Angeles. A pioneer among women designers, she was also prominent in the celebrated show “Women Designers in the USA, 1900-2000: Diversity and Difference.” In a 2006 GDUSA readers poll, Chase was named among the top ten Most Influential Graphic Designers of the Era. (Coincidently, her firm’s work was featured on the cover of the April 2017 edition of GDUSA.) Chris Lowery, president of the design agency has vowed that the company will continue to be driven by the insatiable curiosity and love of design she embodied. “Everyone in the Chase Design Group family has been touched and inspired by Margo’s creativity, generous spirit and love for design. We will all miss her brilliance and incredible energy, but will carry her vision for the organization forward as she would have wanted,” he says. “All of us here at Chase send our heartfelt condolences to her husband Patrick Dugan and the rest of her family.”

After 35 years Ken Hanson is leaving the agency he founded. Hanson plans to focus on other creative projects including Greater Together, a nonprofit organization he started focused on helping young people of color become part of the creative economy. Long-time partner, Tim Dodge, takes over as CEO of Hanson Dodge and the firm name remains the same. The firm, which began as Hanson Graphic operating out of a spare bedroom, evolved to establish a national reputation through work for active lifestyle brands, including Trek Bicycle, Wilson Sporting Goods and Wolverine Boots. Today they serve a broad range of national and global consumer brands. A self-taught designer, Hanson was named a GDUSA “Person To Watch” in 2001. He founded the AIGA Wisconsin chapter, which honored him as a 2014 Fellow Award recipient and in 2016 his creative direction for K-Swiss won Best of Show at Milwaukee Ad Workers’ Milwaukee 99 show. Hanson is also a fine art photographer and plays bass guitar in a local band, Panalure.

Jan Lorenc is the 2017 SEGD Fellow. The Award recognizes an individual for promoting the highest values in environmental and/or experiential graphic design and significantly contributing to the direction and growth of the field. Past SEGD Fellows include Donald Meeker, Doug Morris, Chris Calori and David VandenEynden, Wayne Hunt, Massimo Vignelli, Deborah Sussman and Robert Probst. Lorenc has headed Lorenc+Yoo Design since 1978. His design philosophy is rooted in a holistic understanding of the project and the creation of an integrated project experience — a methodology that has carried his firm on a wide range of architecture, public art, landscape, interior and experiential graphic design projects worldwide. Lorenc has been honored internationally by numerous design publications and organizations, he is a frequent lecturer in the US, China and Korea, and serves as a design advisor to numerous non-profits and government bodies. He has taught design at the university level, most recently at SCAD in Atlanta. He is co-author of the definitive museum and exhibit design textbook — What Is Exhibition Design? published by Rotovision.
