Life is complicated, nuanced, confusing, full of grays. I hate that. Whoever made up the game could have simplified the rules or at least given us more precise instructions. I’m just saying. Nevertheless, every once in a while, there is a moment in which you suddenly see or understand something in a new or very clear way. (Maybe more than once-in-a-while for those of you living in Colorado, Washington or the medical marijuana states.)

For me, one of these epiphanies is that a personal strength can also be a personal weakness, that the very behaviors, attitudes and qualities that make you successful are often the same ones that hold you back. You may have learned this truth in kindergarten, but I am a bit slow on the uptake and it recently hit me like a ton of bricks. So I was especially interested to discover that several of the 2014 “People To Watch” participants — this is our annual spotlight on newsworthy, talented and influential designers — grasp the dual nature of strength and weakness, function and dysfunction, when it comes to their work. For example, Alex Center of The Coca-Cola Company sees his greatest creative strength as having “passion” and his greatest weakness as having “passion.” For Ellen Bruss of Ellen Bruss Design, the strength is “fussiness” and the weakness is “not knowing when to stop being fussy.” Kim Kiser of Dimensional Fund Advisors sees perfectionism as a positive trait — “I’m a perfectionist, so I obsess over the details” — until she doesn’t — “I’m a perfectionist, so I lament over the details.” Shall we continue? Julia Zelts of Hyperakt says her greatest asset is “attention to detail.” Her greatest deficit — you guessed it — “attention to detail.” Simon Endres of Red Antler attributes success to “being a generalist” whereas his weakness is that “I’m a generalist.” In slightly different expressions, we hear a similar duality from the inimitable Chip Kidd, from the eloquent David Vanden-Eynden, from NPR’s Liz Danico, the Foreign Policy Association’s Tonya Leigh, and Brand Fever’s Vicky Jones. I could go on, but you get the point. Me? Thanks for asking. Among others, addicted to work. At once, incredibly productive and very limiting. There are lots of insights about graphic design and its practitioners in the 51st Anniversary People To Watch report. We hope you enjoy it, along with the annual Students To Watch and Designer-Friendly Companies features that accompany it. As in the past, we selected people and institutions we know and respect. But the community is increasingly large, diverse, democratic and decentralized, so we welcome — need — your help. Feel free to let us know about others who deserve recognition. Graphic design will be more attentive to the canvas of the invisible over the visible. As interfaces dissipate into human behavior and items formerly known as buttons and screens dissipate into public spaces, our roles take on different challenges. Material for creation is now embedded and transmitted through a new stack — one that contains concepts like mobile, social, sensors, and context to be successful. This graphic design will succeed if it's responsive, dynamic, and smart in both social environments and private spaces. And that sort of design is not always rewarded for what is seen, but for what is not.

THOUGHTS ON THE STATE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN Okay, so just what is graphic design? The dull but correct answer is that graphic design is purposeful planning that uses any combination of forms, pictures, words, and meanings to achieve one’s goal. But that is boring. The far more interesting answer is that graphic design is problem-solving (and sometimes making something really cool in the process). There are all kinds of problems to solve: good, bad, complicated, easy, annoying, fascinating, dull, lifethreatening, mundane. There are problems that matter only to you and no one else, and problems that determine the fate of mankind. And some of them are truly unsolvable — but of course that doesn’t stop people from trying, and it shouldn’t. Businesses are starting to really value our role in the workplace and our ability to drive positive growth and think holistically. Design is no longer just about making things that look beautiful or stylish. The new role of the designer involves creating consumer experiences and product systems that have the power to effect people's lives. 2014 | PEOPLE TO WATCH THOUGHTS ON THE STATE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN I feel both optimistic and pessimistic about the future of our community. Here is why. I feel that increasingly design is being understood in the effects it can have in the world when done well. I am optimistic that this trend will continue. With this comes a brighter spotlight that attracts folks wanting to get into the field. Many without proper training. 2014 | PEOPLE TO WATCH THOUGHTS ON THE STATE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN In the next few years, I see more companies building their own inhouse teams. The cost savings and brand expertise are undeniable. Becoming fully invested in a company’s growth and success offers a rewarding dynamic you only get as an insider. Agencies will have some competition wooing design candidates. Jeans-wearing aside, there is great opportunity inhouse. I am also excited about blurring the lines between editorial and design; between design and interactive; and between strategy and project management. He is also the founder and chair of the Organization of Black Designers which currently numbers 8,700 members nationally and lists a database of more than 48,000 African-American designers. OBD produces
I expect the pace at which design projects are completed and the speed of the design process itself to continue to accelerate. The immense application and focus of digital tools being applied to design and manufacturing has cut delivery time of a finished product by 30-50%. In the case of digital printing, it’s only hours. Digital tools help to provide more design options in a much shorter time. From autos to graphic design there is a greater expectation and demand for shorter delivery timetables. Since design now does literally come out of a “box” and the increase in productivity that is made possible has tended to marginalize graphic design to the extent that the sheer volume of graphic product is making it so ubiquitous, especially on the Web, that even “good design” is now completely taken for granted. I am concerned that there is so much great work being done now that we will lapse into a “stagnation of quality.” The public is being exposed to higher caliber work in such quantity that this may lead to a kind of aesthetic complacency. Great design is expected — we see more companies start with their purpose and use design to echo that cause. It’s very powerful and it is influencing how design is understood in the world. I’d like to think I’m the eternal optimist and wired to lean that way in business. I’m certainly optimistic at the strength of design and the transformation we see happen with our clients. I hear people speak of the dimming prospects of design and how crowdsourcing threatens the craft, but I’m not terribly concerned. We now want (and can have) both function and beauty. Clients and retailers who support design are being rewarded by broader society so clients are eager to embrace design. There is also a lot more crosspollination with what design means. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve recently done showroom layouts and interiors, which was a unique opportunity to keep the brand consistent. 2014 | PEOPLE TO WATCH THOUGHTS ON THE STATE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN I believe society is becoming more and more seduced by design – a temptation that was initiated during the rise of modernism, then became objectified by Apple, and has now been commandeered by all and sundry from Brooklyn to Beijing. Consequently, we are now all patrons of design and are highly influenced by its charm. I see this particularly with B2B clients who are finally recognizing its strength, and realizing that the lines between a customer and a corporation blur – because we are all consumers, regardless on which side of the fence we stand. I see the industry continuing to morph, becoming less about designing artifacts and more about designing experiences. This doesn’t mean the death of craft, but it does mean a re-emphasis on ideas. One trend I’ve experienced in recent years is multiple firms/agencies collaborating and building richer experiences together. The need to differentiate in new and innovative ways is critical for so many companies, products and services. Today, differentiation happens online, offline and mobile. Also, change is the only constant. Our profession has changed greatly over the short 20-plus years I’ve been part of it, and I anticipate that it will continue to evolve with blazing speed as it has for hundreds of years. Critical components of our design and communication processes are constantly being replaced with new and emerging technologies. This is the way of the future. Many young designers may no longer be familiar with typesetters, etchers or “stripper” professions. Will it be our turn to simply fade away with these antiquated professions? I honestly can say with optimism “Never!” Quite simply, designers have continually adapted over the ages and with every new innovation continue to offer something truly timeless: the ability to communicate. Clients will always need to promote their products or communicate impactful messages to society. This has — and always will be — a key marketing goal. As designers, we have a special ability. We know how to bring communications to life through visuals and type that impact our clients' audiences — no matter what the tool or time period. This is why I believe that smart, innovative graphic designers who take time to understand their clients (and, more importantly, their audiences) will always be in demand. FAVORITE COLOR? Yellow
Although Patrick has been a professional designer for more than 20 years, his creative passion actually began during childhood. While other children in his thirdgrade class were coloring “within the lines,” Patrick found interest in abstract drawings and the graphic appeal within pop culture around him in advertisements and ads. His artistic talent led him to special advanced art classes as a young child and ultimately to a fine arts degree in design from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Patrick worked for one year under his instructor, Michael Glass, then for 13 years at Pressley Jacobs Design, primarily with B2B clients. During that time he refined his skills and knowledge of design as well as his understanding of successful client relationships. 2014 | PEOPLE TO WATCH THOUGHTS ON THE STATE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN I’m very optimistic about the future. Whether the business of design is more or less challenging than in the past changes for everyone, so it’s hard to measure the impact of our industry’s transformation from that perspective. Creatively, however, I’m having more fun than I ever did. More and more, our work lives across an expanding universe of channels and cuts across more disciplines. The role of the creative is expanding, from concept and execution to having a wider influence on our culture and our clients’ business. If you are able to see past the new challenges that come with the transformation, it’s an amazing time to be a designer. FAVORITE COLOR?

I see a continued convergence, conversation and blending across various practices, including architecture, programming, design, filmmaking, material science, electrical engineering and startup culture. In this convergence, I believe the fundamentals of design and storytelling won’t change much. LAUNCHING YOUR PROFESSIONAL DESIGN CAREER? CONSIDER AN INTERNSHIP One of the greatest challenges facing recent grads as they seek their first full-time design job is a lack of professional experience. How can you get a foot in the door with prospective employers if they seek candidates with previous experience? An internship can be an effective way to bridge that gap. These opportunities allow you to gain on-the-job skills and make valuable connections – they can even lead to full-time opportunities. In fact, more employers than you might think use internships as a way to find prospects for entry-level positions. Advertising and marketing executives surveyed by The Creative Group said the top benefit of offering internships is the ability to identify new talent. The challenge for students is landing a useful internship. A majority of executives said their agency or firm does not offer this type of program. Here are five tips to help you identify – and land – an internship that supports your career goals: 1. DON’T DAWDLE Start your search early to allow ample time to research companies of interest, connect with your college career center and contact members of your network for leads. Scour job boards and websites geared specifically toward internship seekers and designers, like InternMatch (internmatch.com) or AIGA’s internship listings (designjobs.aiga.org). 2. REFINE YOUR MARKETING MATERIALS Like the application process for a full-time design job, most employers require a resume, cover letter and portfolio from intern candidates. Carefully proofread your resume and cover letter, and ask a mentor or professor to review your work to catch anything you missed and check for clarity. Make sure your portfolio is organized and easy to navigate. Show classwork, pro bono pieces or even some personal design projects that demonstrate your range and creative thinking skills. Go for quality over quantity when making your selections – seven to 10 pieces should suffice. 3. DRESS TO IMPRESS Have an interview coming up? Invest in a business-appropriate outfit. Even though some companies have relaxed dress codes, you want to make a strong first impression. You gain instant credibility when you’re well groomed and well dressed. 4. The decision to continue his education at Pratt was spurred by a desire to explore more conceptually challenging projects, and to create a more meaningful contribution to the creative community. John states: “My time at Pratt has been invaluable. I have been able to work with talented professors and design firms in New York, and even collaborated internationally with students from the St. Joost academy in The Netherlands. I am thankful for the last year and a half, energized for my last semester, and excited for the challenges that lay ahead as a working professional in New York City.”

SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY INITIATIVE SFI Inc. is an independent, nonprofit organization that is solely responsible for maintaining, overseeing and improving the internationally recognized Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) program. Across Canada and the U.S., more than 240 million acres are certified to the SFI forest management standard. In addition, the SFI program’s unique fiber sourcing requirements promote responsible forest management on all suppliers’ lands. SFI chain-of-custody (COC) certification tracks the percentage of fiber from certified forests, certified sourcing and post-consumer recycled content. SFI on-product labels identify both certified sourcing and COC claims to help consumers make responsible purchasing decisions. SFI Inc. is governed by a three-chamber board of directors representing environmental, social and economic sectors equally. The organization was recognized recently for the greatest increase — roughly 25% — in forest certification of the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) national members at the PEFC General Assembly. Two Common Myths About Print On Paper, Busted! BY GERRY BONETTO
There’s a lot of misinformation about print on paper. Amidst all of the noise that “paper is bad” or “print kills forests,” few realize that all of these myths are just that – myths. In reality, print has surprisingly good environmental credentials. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT TWO OF THESE MYTHS AND SEE WHAT THE FACTS REALLY ARE…
MYTH Print on paper is a wasteful product FACT Paper is one of the most recycled products in the world! In the U.S., nearly three times more paper is recycled than is sent to landfills 1 – adding up to a remarkable 66 percent recycling rate in 2011 2. In fact, total paper recovery in the U.S. exceeded 51 million tons 3 in 2012, saving over 168.3 cubic yards of landfill space.
What do we do with all of that recovered paper? Approximately 33 percent of the fibers used to make paper products come from recycled paper.4 So recycled paper is used to make everything from paper-based packaging to tissue products, office paper and newsprint. You might say that the average paper has five lives, as the wood fibers used in its production can be recycled and reused five times.5
Let’s look at paper’s carbon footprint over key points in its lifetime, from forest to consumer. Forest products can require little or no fossil fuels for production, and they actually store carbon during their useful life. Because the paper industry relies primarily on carbon neutral biomass-derived fuels, paper production produces very little greenhouse gas emissions. And aggressive recycling on the consumer level cuts things down even more. CONCLUSION The paper and printing industry have a positive environmental story to tell. Which means graphic designers can take advantage of print’s many benefits, knowing that print on paper is a surprisingly eco-friendly choice.
