“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
“Did ya see that DEUCE pull in?” I will take the bet, that when that question is asked at any cruise night event or car show in the country, most of the folks that are there will know exactly what you are talking about. One of the most iconic cars ever built is the 1932 Ford. Be it sedan, coupe, roadster or one of the other variations. They all stand out where ever they are at.
There are events geared strictly for the 32’ Ford. The MERC – DEUCE Reunion, The Southeast Deuce Gathering at the Shades of the Past rod run and other too numerous to mention. It speaks volumes for a vehicles popularity when events are planned solely for a particular year of car. There are some other cars that share this same kind of iconic status as “the deuce”. The 57 Chevy. The 33-34 Ford’s. Corvette’s. The 5-6-7 T-Birds. There are some more, but you not that many. You get the point. Bottom line there is just something special about these cars for the folks that own them or want one.
You may not be a blue oval lover, but the majority of you know this car. And why is that?
The Deuce turns 80 this year. The celebrations have begun. The GNRS hosted an event in the event when 80 deuce’s DROVE there to help celebrate. The PETERSEN Museum in L.A. Calif is hosting a whole week of activities celebrating this great vehicle. Let’s admit it, not every car gets treated this way.
Is it the styling of each model? Is it because 1932 was the first year for the V-8? Is it because the 32’ was a stand alone year for the style cues? Is it because of that grill shell and grill? I would yes to all of the above. Why did hot rodders make this car, the “gotta have” car for a hot rod? I would venture to say there are as many reasons as there are hot rodders that own one. There is just something about the 32 Ford that stands out for hot rodders. You don’t get that same kind of energy about a 32 Plymouth or 32 Chevy. Fact is you don’t see very many of them either.
I admit it. I am hooked on the deuce. I have had a 32 roadster and want another one. Working on putting parts together to make it happen. HAPPY BIRTHDAY 32 Ford…let’s cut the cake.
Jimmy B.

GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
Here’s a great story about Cliff Ernst of Hendersonville TN. Many of you gearheads in the Middle TN area have had the opportunity to see his collection and if you haven’t you need to!! Thanks to Gary Haneberg for sharing this.
I just wanted to tip you off concerning a great article on my friend Cliff Ernst’s car collection. Pick-up a copy of the February, 2012 DuPont Registry magazine and look on Pages 183 thru 186. This is the very first article in this magazine regarding personal automobile collections. It is very well done with great photography and is really a feather in Cliff’s hat. Some of you have seen Cliff’s collection first hand. It is ironic how this all came about. The C.E.O. of this magazine has a daughter that is very interested in playing guitar and singing. He decided to see if he could get her a special guitar autographed by her favorite country music recording star. In the process of accomplishing this task, he found himself at the home next door to Cliff’s home where the star’s parents live. While he was there, he talked to the star’s father about his magazine and its theme. The father said that he should go next door and meet Cliff and see his car collection. He did and that was the beginning of the conversation that led to the opportunity to be in this edition of the magazine. It appears that the DuPont Registry will be featuring other people’s private collections in future editions. The timing was wonderful as they handed a flock of this month’s edition to attendees at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale!! If you look reeeeaaaaallll close, you can see the front end of my ’68 Corvette sticking out. It is now famous!! This exposure will surely bring another $10,000 at sale time (not)!!! Oh, I almost forgot to tell you the name of the star--------Taylor Swift. http://www.dupontregistry.com/AUTOS/BLOG/post/201 2/01/05/yenko-camaro-enthusiast-cliff-ernst-showus-his-car-collection.aspx
A BIG Thank You from me…Jimmy B to the great folks over at POWERBLOCKTV. They recently featured my 57 Chevy Truck on there website in the READERS RIDES section. With all the nice rides out there and posted on their website, I am very appreciative to be featured like that. Thanks guys!!
Things you want to know….. Not liking this one…The BELLEVUE CRUISE IN wont be happening this year. See the attached article on the next page. Sounds like a good chance that there will be a SPRING EDITION of the REDNECK RUMBLE. Work is going on to secure a site for a possible event. Watch the GAZZETTE for more info as it comes out. The great folks at the MURFREESBORO HOT ROD CLUB (MHRC) have announced that they have a 2 year agreement to keep their Friday night cruise at the AVENUES shopping center, by the BELK store. Check out the Cruise News section for details and get ready for a good time starting May 4th!! Planning is being done on a Model A & Early Ford swap meet. Looks like Lebanon TN will be the location. Stay tuned to the GAZZETTE for more info as this one comes together. Looks like April timeframe. Get used to it…Parking at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds is $5.00 per car. Thank you Mayor Dean & the fair board!!!

“OIL EM’ UP” With the cruising season getting near, I wanted to share some important news with everyone. After much soul searching, I have decided to stop producing the Bellevue Cruise-In. Over the past 10 years, it has been a real pleasure to meet so many great people and see some of the most awesome rides in the Mid-Tn. area. However, the task of producing this each month has just become too much of a load to bear. I was attempting to pass this on to some other groups but it just has not worked out. Therefore The Bellevue Cruisers or Tom Akers will no longer be producing the Bellevue Cruise-In or The Hwy. 100 Cruise-In. Thanks to all who have supported the events by attending and a special "Thank You" to everyone who has helped over the years. I will continue to produce the car shows I have been involved with. And I look forward to seeing everyone at those as well as some of the other great shows and cruise-ins around the area. I also will be taking a more active role in the Battlefield AACA Car Club as this year's VicePresident. After being a member of this club for the last decade and meeting some great people, I am really excited about the things going on with that club. The club events and car cruises have been incredible the last couple of years. The club also produces the annual Battlefield Car Show in Cool Springs each October and consistently draws in excess of 200 vehicles and makes generous contributions to local charities. I urge all of you to take a look at the club's website at : sites.google.com/site/battlefieldregionaaca/h ome. Please take a close look at what's happening with the club or feel free to contact me by e-mail or phone and consider joining the club and the fun. I will continue to pass along e-mails to keep all of you updated on upcoming events. Again, I appreciate everyone's support of the Cruise-In these last years and look forward to seeing all of you out on the roads soon.
Recently our good friend and great gearhead, Richard “Beaver” Hellis received the “Oil Em’ Up” award while visiting HOT RODS & THREADS Full Service Hot Rod Shop. Beaver left the gears from his Willy’s blower that got chewed up due a lack of oil, at the shop. Terry “master metalman” Tuckerman just couldn’t resist coming up with “something special” for Beaver. With help from his Tech-In-Training (T.I.T.) Cody Johnson, they whipped this beauty up. Beaver said he was putting this up on his wall of fame at home!! Beaver said no more problems like this as he makes sure he has plenty of lube these days!!
Thanks, Tom Tom Akers

Vintage Racing Nashville Style Hey Gearheads, Here some info from Mike Gillespie on something really cool going on in the Nashville TN area. Hey all, The Zapata Race Team, a vintage racing team from Nashville TN is producing a feature length about vintage racing. It is called Vintage Racing Today (VRT). A film crew is following them to the great races they take part in and capture the whole event. It is an inside look at this great hobby, but also a glimpse about the enjoyment of all sports cars, and the great people who surround themselves in anything automobile. VRT has launched a Kickstarter.com campaign to raise additional funds. Kickstarter is a good way to raise funds, but an even better way to raise awareness about the project. Please check out the Kickstarter page for the movie trailer and to read a little more about what they are doing. Some of you will notice familiar faces in the footage. I have contributed to the cause because I like what they are doing, I want to support my friends who are putting this together and I think that this will be a great film to share with others and to educate them on Vintage Racing. If you know anyone that has an interest in Vintage Racing, please forward this along to them. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/165795469 2/help-save-vintage-racing-today?ref=live Thanks for taking the time to look this over. Mike. We want to pass along some sad news we found out about. Jim Bean of the Hoodlum Alley Car Club in Shelbyville TN passed away earlier this month. Condolences to his family and friends. Jim was a BIG part of the HOODLUM ALLEY cruise nites each year. R.I. P.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE From Mike Gillespie… Hey all, just thought I would let you know that I talked with Gary Camp, Director of Communications at Dover Motorsports, about the future of the Nashville Superspeedway. Gary said that currently, there is only one employ at the track just to make sure the grass & weeds stay cut and the water doesn’t freeze. The only activities that are taking place at the track is NASCAR testing. It is also available for Indy Car testing but no teams have rented the facility for that yet. As far as track days, DEs, Autocrosses and other related events, there is no plan for those to take place in 2012 mainly because of the cost of insurance for those types of events that they have to pay for. There had been some rumors flying around and I have had some folks ask me if I knew anything, so now I do.
Thanks Mike for the update!! We’re going to give a shout out to John & Peggy Creveling from Columbia TN. They took part in the Street Rodder Road tour, Lokar Midnight tour last September from Knoxville TN to Kalamazoo MI. In the current issue of Street Rodder, you can check out John & Peggy and their killer 55 Chevy Truck in multiple pictures. It looks like Peggy beat John up the track at the Bristol Raceway stop!! Get ready…it’s coming soon. We’re going to see who the real cruiser is for 2012. The GEARHEAD GAZZETTE REAL CRUISER CONTEST will start up in April. Watch for all the info in the next issue.
And remember to tell em’ ya saw it in the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE cause THE FUN STARTS HERE!!

Take an established event, change the time of year you hold it, change the location and give it a new name and what do you get?? If you’re GOODGUYS…A WINNER!!! The 1st annual “SPEEDWAY NATIONALS” was a hit with hot rodders who raved about the event being held at the historic “BRICKYARD”. Cruising the race track was back and a blast, and getting to park in the “garage area” was very cool too. Add in the awesome Indy 500 museum to take in and you know everyone had a great weekend of hot rodding fun GOODGUYS style. Check out some of the cool rides that graced GASOLINE Alley and make your plans to be part of the fun in 2012. Words / Pic’s: Jimmy B

GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
The “Racing Capital of the World” turned into Hot Rod Central last September as historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted the Goodguys 1st WIX Filters Speedway Nationals. The first year event attracted over 2,500 rods and customs from 31 different states. Hot rodder Michael Tarquinio from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania had a particularly memorable weekend after his “Second Wind” ’32 Ford roadster won the Goodguys 2011 Gearstar Hot Rod of the Year title. Tarquinio’s low flying original steel roadster has a decades old pedigree. First built in the 1970s then mothballed when the original owner fell ill, it sat for nearly 40 years before he stumbled upon it in the rafters of an old Pennsylvania barn. A Ford guy through and through, Tarquinio always wondered what Edsel Ford would have done with a Zephyr roadster. It was that curiosity that drove the roadster build from the beginning. Along with his friends at G.I. S. Automotive Tarquinio painted and assembled the car at his Pittsburg shop last year for a January 2011 debut. The PPG “Washington Blue” roadster body sits on a pair of So-Cal speed shop rails. The car’s heartbeat is an incredibly polished and detailed ’57 Oldsmobile J2 with Stromberg six pack and ultra rare aluminum heads. Torque and horsepower are converted through a Tremec 5 speed transmission and polished banjo style Winters rear end. The retro yet striking interior is Oxblood full grain leather with German square weave carpet. The dash and steering wheel are from a ’40 Lincoln sectioned to fit snugly inside the cockpit. Fog lights and taillights are ’36 Zephyr while the Pines ’32 Ford grill adds a touch of nostalgia. Meticulously handmade Zephyr emblems are courtesy of Motor Head Design. The butternut colored wheels are one-off artillery style by Wheel Smith with 1940 Zephyr hubcaps and trim rings. The roadster rolls on vintage Firestone wide white bias ply tires. Different than any other Goodguys yearly award, the Goodguys/Gearstar Hot Rod of the Year competition requires contestants drive a rigorous 150 mile reliability run as well as a burnout and blast down a drag strip. Tarquinio’s roadster performed flawlessly passing all tests with style proving this winner has as much “go” as “show.” In addition to being named the Goodguys 2011 Gearstar Hot Rod of the Year, it was also named ISCA Roadster Class Champion this year. For his Indy triumph, Tarquinio received a trip to the Goodguys 14th Southwest Nationals last November in Scottsdale to display his car in the “Champion’s arena” presented by Street Rod Headquarters. Snapon rewarded him with a custom tool box and for the mantle he received a billet aluminum award from Goodguys. Fellow award finalists included Rodney Harris, Leighton, AL (’32 Ford 3 window coupe) Bill Paul, Highland, IL (’32 Ford Tudor), Gordon Peters, Sunfish Lake, MN (’32 Ford Tudor), Ken Reister, Littleton, CO (’33 Ford coupe).
The Mothers Brothers Travel the Street Rod Runs to deliver show car quality products. As soon as their bright red trailer hits the grounds, sales start before they can set up. The cars are being prepared for the event and everyone is in need of something they ran out of or forgot to pack. They give seminars and demonstrate how to create that “show shine” and just talk shop to the many friends from over the years.
The everyday driver, the drive it to the event show car, and the trailer car that never gets wet. The everyday driver gets a good cleaner wax that’s one trip around the car, every few months. The other two require a lot more work to get that mirror finish you see in the awards presentations.
Many times, they are called out of their booth to tend to a problem on a show car. Once at the Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green, KY, Mike Cook, owner of The Stone Woods Cook famed gasser came to them with a paint problem. The car had been taken out of the Hot Rod Museum in Los Angeles, covered with a sheet of plastic and trailered in extreme heat. The paint seemed damaged. But not so, the wax was damaged and in a few minutes she was good as new. Another time, we were just minutes away from an extreme judging of Corvettes. A fellow ran into the booth and asked if the Mothers Brothers could help with a scratch on the top, just discovered. With rags and product, they ran to the car as the judges were working on the previous car. A little examination disclosed that it was not a scratch, but a smudge of rubber, that had been thrown up from the road. The owner was relieved as the judges walked over to his car to begin their inspection and the blemish was gone. This is the first of a series of articles on “How to get that show Shine” and the secret is good products and hard work. There are three types of pride rides out there.
We know what hard work is, so let’s look at high quality products. Most manufacturers designed a top of the line item, but in the market, price is the king. The retailers require lower prices and the only way to compete is to water down their products. The reason you don’t see many of the finer brands on the discount shelves is that they won’t sacrifice quality for price.
Investment in quality chemicals and cleaning tools will insure that the hard work you put in will pay off. Nothing can be worse than spending the day working on your ride and not get the hoped for shine or finding it several days later, all but gone. The tools you use are as important as the chemicals and in the next issue we will go over these and explain the difference in polishing cloths, applicators and drying towels. You may be surprised with the reason.

THIS SHOW IS A BLAST!! If you have never been, you don’t know what you are missing…believe me!! Scooter & his crew have got this event running smooth. Some of the “big boys” could take a lesson on how to put on a fun event from this show. No pressure, cool cars & trucks. Throw in a swap meet and some bikes that are all done traditional style and you are going to have a good time. Scooter has got the 2012 edition coming together so make plans to head out to Lebanon TN in September to have some hot rod fun.
Gasser style rides were very popular all weekend!
Love the Buick Cruiser.
This 5 window coupe had everyone talking about it all weekend

HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH Words & Picture’s by Ed Woodard
Editors Note: Drag Racing, Car shows & charity events…the Tappets were doing it all. This month takes us into the club itself to see what the guys were doing. How many Tappets members are still out there? Send us an email and let us know where you’re at now.
Mid-South area was starting to show a real promise of developing ………………..#4 ….& A TAPPETS TALE YOU WON’T BELIEVE……..maybe 2 The Tappets were very active with several of us racing on a regular schedule. Kenneth King had a 1932 Ford sedan that raced as an Altered class car. Kenneth was from the Monterey TN area and was a pretty good drag racer. I remember one Friday night at the Cumberland drag strip in North Nashville it came down the money run between Kenneth & Clyde Felts. Clyde had a little Chevrolet coupe with the best of every thing, including a Hilborn fuel injection. Almost nobody could beat him. Well that night Kenneth easily out ran him. Clyde filed a protest & wanted the engine tore down so we took the car to our Tappets garage in Nashville & tore it down with Clyde watching everything closely. As it turned out, the engine was correct other than having three different type pistons in the engine, best I remember. Clyde just could not believe what he saw. What was Kenneth’s secret? Kenneth’s daddy must have been part jackrabbit, cause when the flagman indicated go, Kenneth went!!! We now refer to it as a hole shot!!!....that he had !!!!! …I don’t think Clyde ever got over that.
Concerning me an early racing as a Tappet member, was running a 98hp, 4speed Corvair Monza which collected a ton of trophies every weekend. It was kept in tune due to Fred Dickey at Beaman Pontiac & their chassis dyno. Actually I was signed up & raced the first year that NHRA ran the points program. My real experience came one Friday night at Cumberland Dragstrip. When it came down to the money run & I had to race Larry Stewart’s Corvette. Well…Larry had to spot me a pretty fair distance. 18
GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
Actually he lined up on my right side to my rear so far that I could clearly see him in my left outside mirror. I thought that being only an 1/8 mile strip I had it made. I was already counting the money!!! The flagman signaled go & Larry came by so fast I thought he was going to turn that ‘vair over. A night to remember for sure…I might have done better with Kenneth driving……..Oh well!!!! Think I should mention that “Ingenuity in Action’ was a phrase that NHRA was using to describe achievements made with hot rodders. This phrase should apply to two Tappets members that noticed a NHRA record holder that they felt could be outrun. So in the typical Tappets spirit they put together a GM 6 cylinder roadster in about 12 weeks and proceeded to take it to the U.S. Nationals and won the class, beating the national record and setting a new record. In my book that made Bob Elam & Stanley Young pretty special in my book. The Tappets Hot Rod club was a real asset to the community with all of our charity events.
TAPPETS CAR CLUB – 1960 Era
HOT RODDING IN THE MID-SOUTH cont. We participated in the Big Brothers Paper Sale during the Christmas season. For some reason we usually pulled the downtown area and just about everyone had been badgered to donate by the time they had gotten to us. I guess we were the last chance to collect for those who slipped through the intersections that did not donate. Well we made sure nobody slipped through, why we even collected from the collectors who were turning in their funds. Almost forgot, the club worked neighborhoods singing Christmas Carols & collected money for the Fannie Battle Day home.
The Tappets had a special project, a club drag car, we were working to complete and that is why Paul Stargel & I pushed the club to put the 1962 Club show on during the State Fair. We felt we could collect enough to get the parts we needed to finish the project. The club decided against it so Paul & I decided to tackle it alone. I am truly sorry that Paul Stargel & I had a falling out with Tappets as it was a great group of guys. I am enclosing several pictures of the members….& the Young & Elam Record Holder…..etc….
Next issue will be AutoShow time at the Tennessee State Fair…..with all the TOP DOG show cars of the time…….

_____“GARAGE & SHOP SCENE” _____ SEND THE PICTURES AND INFO ON YOUR RIDE OR YOUR FRIENDS RIDE AND WE’LL SHOW IT OFF RIGHT HERE!! SEND US YOUR SHOW INFO AND PICTURES AND WE’LL SHARE THEM WITH ALL THE GEARHEADS!!
This month we are showing you the second stop on the “up north garage scene”. Here’s Ed Kirks garage in the Chicago IL area. Ed’s got a new ride sitting in his garage these days. Check out this bad ass 55 Chevy. Nothing like a tri-5 with a blown & injected bowtie motor in the engine compartment. Ed said he can’t wait until the weather breaks to get his double nickel ride turned loose on the street. Lookin’ good Ed!!!
Sometimes project just fall into your lap as they say. Paul Shauck, co-owner of HOT RODS & THREADS Full Service Hot Rod Shop has got a very cool new project going. It’s a 61’ Chevy Truck. This things got awesome patina on it and that is the choice for final finish. Put a check in the box on paint for this project. Body is pretty solid. The cuttin’ has begun though to achieve the right “altitude”. As Paul says, “if you aint pushin’ the possum with the cross member…you ain’t low enuf”!!! Throw in an LS motor & trans combo with a Ford 9”rear end and you can tell some fun will be had. We’re diggin’ the ET wheels Classic 5 Spokes too. We’ll keep you up to date on this one as it get closer to hitting the road.

I now you guys have a lot of time and money invested your ride and I defiantly respect that, so respect what I have in mine. If you have a trade, or just interested in the truck, I have a Flicker account at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/irocs/ to look at pictures and documents pertaining to the truck. Contact me at gary_falls@comcast.net. (2/12) Editors Note: check out the YOUTUBE page for Hot Rod Threads, for this truck doing a KILLER BURNOUT so you can see and hear the performance!!

GEARHEAD GAZZETTE 2012
Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...Holy Crap... what a ride!!!"
There have been countless studies done to prove it, but virtually everyone knows that spending quality time with a kid is the greatest gift you can give them. And sharing your appreciation for collector cars is a great way to nurture their interest in a hobby that you can enjoy together for many years to come.
