In our hobby, there are a lot of car shows that take place throughout the year. In almost every town in the USA, during the spring-summer-fall seasons (depending how far north you live) some type of car show takes place. For those who live in warmer parts of the country, there is year round car show fun to be had. Prior to August of 1970, there were some regional events that drew up to 100 cars at a time. Most of the local shows had a smaller turnout. The hot rodders in California had The L.A. Roadsters Fathers day deal to go to and there were even “reliability runs” that drew a lot of cars to actually drive their cars. In the offices of Rod & Custom Magazine, then Editor Tom “Stroker McGurk” Medley had an idea to do a “national” event. Tom enlisted the help of one LeRoi “Tex” Smith to help pull this deal off. The location was picked in Peoria IL, since it was centrally located in the USA.

The birth of a national event happened August 14-16, 1970. The beginning of the NSRA happened then also.
This weekend “THE BIG ONE” in Louisville KY takes place. The 47th NSRA Nationals takes place. Happy Birthday NSRA Nationals! Say what you will about the NSRA Nationals, and there are a lot of opinions but think about this…since the Nat’s in Peoria happened, a whole industry has formed and grown, because of the idea of a couple of hot rodders and a bunch of their friends who took a chance. Goodguys Crowns the Street Rod of the Year & Street Machine of the Year winners at the 19th PPG Nationals When the 19th PPG Nationals wrapped up in Columbus recently, the signature event of the year awarded two of the season’s top cars. Capturing Goodguys 2016 Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year was Billy & Debby Thomas’ Ridlerwinning ’39 Oldsmobile convertible.
Built at Customs and Hot Rods of Andice, the landmark rod named “Olds Cool” was restyled, molded then coach built by the CHRA under the watchful eye of shop manager Michael Kaiser, CHRA stylist Levi Green and an assist from former GM Design specialist Christian Dotson. The build was six years in the making. It rides on a custom modified Morrison chassis and gobbles up ground courtesy of a 455c.i. Olds V8 that was one of the last engines ever built by the late Joe Mondello. The exquisite leather interior was house-stitched at CHRA and the Kona Brown PPG paint was laid down by Charley Hutton.
Driving off with Goodguys 2016 PPG Street Machine of the Year was Tim and CiCi Spencer in their ’69 Ford Mustang by Goolsby Customs. The Glasurit “Goolsby Grey” Mustang created a stir at the SEMA Show last November when it captured the prestigious Mother’s Shine award. The low-slung stance of the Mustang is courtesy of Detroit Speed AlumaFrame front and QUADRA Link rear suspension sprung with JRi shocks. Nutek wheels and Michelin rubber add modern performance while the classic body lines were subtly refined with shaved drip rails, extended rear quarters, one-off side vents and 3D printed taillights. M & M Hot Rod Interiors stitched the Relicate leather upholstery.

Shop Tip #11 By Dick Raczuk Helping Hand I wish I would have built this years ago. I was forced to come up with something when I was widening the fenders on my Hollywood. A straight up and down stand just would not work. The solution was a vise with a swiveling head.
I used a commercial stand I had laying around for years. Now that I used it on the fender, I have a dreamed up a multitude of other uses. I don’t have to name them, you can use your imagination. It’s like having somebody standing around to hold things when you need him. The next step is to put some locking wheels on it.
The stand also adjusts up and down and rotates on the ball joint. It can get into any position you want. You can get a swivel vise from Grainger’s or someone like them.
My base was built from a sheave off a adjustable pulley. It’s pretty heavy and after I started to lug it around, I realized it needed wheels. When it’s not being used with the vise, I install a roller attachment.
A recent “e” mail from Timothy Stachlewitz showed us some attachments that can be made to expand it’s use around the shop. He uses one to hold a vise, grinder, etc. I have no doubt there are some of these rolling around shops at this moment. I just don’t knows why it took me so long to build mine. One thing to remember, make it bottom heavy.
