Sept 8, 2016

Ready or not gearheads, September is here. The Spring and summer have flown by and we are fast approaching the fall season. Best time of year if you ask me! With September comes the BUSIEST month for car shows. It’s understandable, as the weather usually is great with cool morning temps and warm sunny afternoons. Also September is usually a drier month in a lot of places. The summer heat takes its toll on folks and there is a renewed desire to get out of the house and the shop and enjoy our cool cars and trucks.

FACEBOOK page. We want to see how much fun you are having with that hot rod of yours. In this issue we have put together a tribute feature about Blackie Gejeian. Blackie is truly a hot rod legend. He didn’t just build some cool cars, he built AMBR winners, but he did a whole lot more too! The feature covers a lot of his life in a few pages which doesn’t seem fair.

Take some pictures of the places you cruise to and the shows you attend and post them on our

The thing about Blackie that struck me, is that he always had time for a hot rodder. If you said hi to him, he always stopped to talk to you. We need more of that in the world today. Thanks Blackie…you will be missed.

Keep that right pedal....FLOORED!

SEPT 2016: SEPT 9-10: WEST SALEM WI: MISSISSIPPI MAYHEM 2016: One part car show, Featuring pre-'65 hot rods and kustoms. One part motorcycle show,Pre-'75 traditional-styled chopper, bobber and café racers. One helluva lot of fun! Bands, beer, pin ups, vendors, swap, racing and more! A traditional hot rod show is different from other car shows in a number of ways. A traditional show celebrates all things vintage, not just the cars. It attempts to recreate the time from which they came. There, you will not only experience the cars people drove, but also the clothes they wore, the music they listened to and items they would have purchased for their homes. That you can, too! To maintain that feeling of stepping back in time, certain restrictions must be placed on vehicles in the immediate show area. There are technology based restrictions as well. For example, billet wheels and white lettered tires did not exist on street cars during this time. That said, Mississippi Mayhem has nothing against cars manufactured post 1964. Quite the opposite. blackie

Hot Rod Hero…Legend and Friend!

Words by Jimmy B / Pic’s from the Internet / Reference Material from Wikipedi

“Blackie”…he was simply Blackie to everyone. The Hot Rod world lost a legend, hero and friend to every hot rodder out there, on September 2nd. Blackie left all of us for the BIG Hot Rod & Custom show upstairs. Have to say, it has to be one heckuva show now!

After the serving his country in the Navy, Blackie returned home and farmed the land his grandfather and father worked all those years, while also learning to race on those dirt roads. He credits that driving on those dirt roads with helping him become a five-time NASCAR dirt track champion.

Blackie Gejeian, long time Fresno Autorama Promoter passed away on the morning of September 2, 2016 at the age of 90

Blackie was born Michael Gejeian in 1926 in the town of Easton CA, outside of Fresno. His parents were farmers in the San Joaquin Valley. Mike as he was known then, grew up on the farm and around his extended family who were all farmers too. After High School, Mike enlisted in the US Navy and served during World War II. After serving his country, he came back to Easton and became Blackie. When he came home from the war, he built a roadster, painted it black. He wore black leathers, everybody did. Ever since then he became ‘Blackie.’ Nobody ever really knew him by any other name from then on.

Blackie raced hardtops in the 1950s at Kearney Bowl, and produced races in Clovis, Madera and Raisin City from the early 1960s to mid-’80s. He was a promoter at Clovis Speedway, a halfmile clay track at what is now the Clovis Rodeo Grounds, for parts of two decades, until it closed in 1976. The Clovis speedway, which was in a dire situation, became more and more popular with Blackie’s promotion.

Through his efforts, the Clovis speedway became one of the “most epic dirt tracks in the country.” Blackie was also the owner of the Fresno Dragway for18 years. No offense to Bruton Smith (NASCAR/NHRA Track owner) but Blackie ran the FIRST 4 wide top fuel races at the Fresno Dragway.

the coveted America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award in 1955 with his ground-breaking 1927 Ford he called The Shish-Kebab Special, turning the vehicle on its side at car shows to display its fully-chromed undercarriage. It was the first show car of its kind. He also started the tradition of placing a mirror beneath the car when showcased. In the years that followed, Blackie created a full-custom roadster pickup named Ala Kart with friends George Barris and Richard Peters that went on to win hundreds of awards and was twice chosen America’s Most Beautiful Roadster by the Grand National Roadster Show.

Blackie would tell everyone, “When I was a race car driver, I was really good in dirt, and it was because I remembered our fields and orchards,” he said.

Blackie started the world famous Fresno Autorama Show in 1958 and it became one of the largest custom auto shows in North America.

It was that roadster that started it all for Mr. Gejeian. He built it in 1945 in his dad’s barn, and it became the fastest in Fresno. However, this car would ultimately crash in a race in 1948. A crash cut the car in half; Mr. Gejeian was almost killed. He spent the next 10 years rebuilding the car. Blackie’s creativity flourished that year, winning The annual event, held in winter or early spring, celebrated muscle cars, hot rods, custom cars, race cars, expensive cars and unique cars. In its 50th anniversary in 2008, the Autorama showcased over 250 cars. With the retirement of Blackie, the Autorama car show closed out an amazing run for an event. Throughout its history, the Autorama car show took place once a year for 51 years, the last show being held in 2010.

Blackie was considered an “Industry Legend” by everyone in the hot rod world. When you look back at his life and all the things he did, it’s easy to see why. Blackie was always around at the California Car shows, greeting people, telling the most fantastic stories, and signing whatever people wanted him to sign. Blackie never met a stranger and always took the time to talk to you if you stopped him to say hi. You got more then just a hello…that was Blackie.

At his 90th birthday party earlier this year, at the Fresno County Historical Museum at the fairgrounds, Fresno city leaders declared June 24 Michael “Blackie” Gejeian Day and Mr. Gejeian himself unveiled a bust in his likeness. Truly an honor that Blackie cherished. Blackie truly was a hot rodders hot rodder. Just a week before his passing, he was at the Goodguys West Coast Nationals checking out all the cool cars and talking to all those hot rodders. We truly have lost another of our iconic hero's. While there are a lot of people who had a hand in defining what we know as hot rodding today, Blackie was one of kind…period.

For those of you wanting Obit/Funeral service info, here it is: Mike "Blackie" Gejeian was born on June 25, 1926 in Fresno, California to parents Charles and Ossanna (Yaghjian) Gejeian. He passed away on September 2, 2016 in Fresno, California. Blackie was a farmer for seventy-five years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Knight Gejeian and Ossanna Yaghjian Gejeian; his son, Charles Gejeian; his daughter, Diana Timian; and his sister in law, Violet Gejeian. Blackie is survived by his sister, Sarah Hagopian; his brother, Albert Gejeian; his son in law, Brian O'Hagan; his grandson, Damon Gejeian and his wife Heidi; grandson, Dustin Gejeian; granddaughter, Melissa Timian; great grandsons; Dylan Gejeian and Brady Gejeian; and great granddaughter, Lilyana Jones. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Yost & Webb Funeral Home, 1002 T Street, Fresno, CA 93721 (corner of T and Tulare Streets). Graveside Services will be held on Monday, September 19, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at Washington Colony Cemetery, 7318 S. Elm Ave., Fresno, California 93706.

Team McLeish Bros. sets 186 MPH record with an Indian Scout Engine Media Contact | Louise Ann Noeth | 805.312.0893 | tech@landspeedproductions.biz Team Contact | Derek McLeish | 310.251.3895 | mcleishracing@gmail.com Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah – Triumphing over poor racing surface conditions, mechanical woes and a fire, it was high fives all around with the Team McLeish Bros. when, on the last day of competition, Friday, August 19th, they inked a 186.305 MPH National Land Speed Record at the 68th annual Speed Week.

“Fortunately, fellow racer Wayne Kolden had just finished his racing and generously loaned us a relatively stock engine,” continued McLeish, “We swapped engines in true Bonneville hot rod style getting us back out on the long course for the record setting run.” Such camaraderie among land speed

Competing with its 21-foot SilverRod, the motorcycle streamliner rocketed to the top speed spot for ClassSCS-G (side car streamliner – gas powered) eclipsing all other Indian Motorcycle powered speed machines at Bonneville. “Our highly motivated crew originally intended to tackle the 235MPH fuel record to improve on our 2011 Bonneville top speed motorcycle record,” said Team Captain Derek McLeish of the 1,200pound speed machine that was nearly sidelined when an extra big shot of nitrous oxide seriously damaged one of the pistons.

racers is commonplace, but it is interesting that Kolden works as an engineer at Indian Motorcycles. “Paying homage to Burt Munro’s record was a career highlight,” continued Team Captain McLeish. Team McLeish Bros. record book accomplishment exceeded Munro’s longstanding 183MPH speed, but not his record. Munro was venerated when Anthony Hopkins played the New Zealand motorcyclist in the feature film “World’s Fastest Indian.” “We just never want to run on his record,” explained Crew Chief Douglas

McLeish. “What he achieved in the 1960s was simply spectacular, we were all inspired by what he did.” The Men, The Machine Joining the never-ending chase for bigger speed numbers in 1999, Team McLeish Bros. has set numerous AMA, FIM, SCTA and BNI records including five times earning the SCTA El Mirage Points Championship.

A test bed for the team’s dreams and imagination since 2003, SilverRod has carried more than 37 different engine combinations down the saline speedway: from 2.5cc to 1300cc,setting 130 records configured as a car, or motorcycle, including the first compressed air engine record. Team Captain Derek McLeish relies on brother Douglas McLeish as Crew chief, Mike Fitzmorris for electronics, Scott Mattern handles the engines, Doug Robinson finesses the aero package and Ralph LeClercq puts in the tight tune. Working from a Derek McLeish design, Dave Brant of Brant Engineering handcrafted SilverRod’s tidy frame before its sleek aluminum bodywork was formed by Steve Beckman of Beckman Metal Works.
