“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

as a people, let the

If you hadn’t heard or seen by now, this past Monday, the moon came around and planted itself in front of the sun. Yep...the majority of the USA was covered in a Solar Eclipse. Some area’s had total darkness for 2 to 3 minutes...some less. Millions of people watched and experienced this wonder of nature.

little shit go for a while and just had some old fashioned fun! Awesome wasn’t it? It was in my opinion. Think about our car shows and cruise-in’s. They are kind of like a weekly eclipse if you will. We come together in one place, to enjoy the cool cars and trucks and whatever the event is about. More importantly we enjoy each other for some period of time. You may roll in with a bunch of friends or you go alone and strike up a conversation and possible new friendship with the people at the event you are at. You forget about troubles and concerns for a small while and just have fun.

The other far more important thing that took place is this….for a period of time, some for a couple of hours, some for a day or more...people across towns in the USA, came together with family, friends and complete strangers who became friends and spent time together having fun. People didn't talk about a lot of things we see and hear about everyday on TV or Social media, but rather had fun, talked about what the people around them were doing, how much fun they were having, where they lived and more. In others words we

We need more “hot rod eclipses”..just sayin’…..

Wendover, Utah (August 9, 2017) – Three separate organizations representing racers and industry are in discussions with Intrepid Potash-Wendover, Inc., a potash mine operator, on ways to increase the amount of salt brine being pumped onto the Bonneville Salt Flats. As Speed Week celebrates its 68th anniversary, the racing community is exploring ways to help restore the historic site to its former glory.

nonprofit organization whose mission is to restore the Bonneville Salt Flats. The “Save the Salt Coalition” is an umbrella group comprised of automotive and motorsports companies and organizations with a vested interest in this national treasure. The “Utah Alliance” is a volunteer Utah-based advocacy group using its expertise and contacts at the local level. All three organizations are collaborating to keep Bonneville available for future generations.

According to the groups, the goal is to create a 10-year pilot program to pump at least 1.2 million tons of salt a year, more than double the current amount being pumped. The program should help better understand Bonneville’s complex geology while simultaneously improving the racing surface. The expanded laydown will build upon a 1997-2002 program which averaged 1.2 million tons yearly and increased the salt surface and underground aquifer that supports it. The focus will be on sustaining that volume over a longer time frame and carefully measuring the results.

Details about the 10-year pilot program are being refined and will be released in the coming months. The parties are working with the U.S. Congress to develop appropriations legislation necessary to implement the plan. The racing venue is managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, designated an Area of Critical Environmental Concern, and identified as the Bonneville Salt Flats Special Recreation Management Area. For more information, visit

“Bonneville’s premier racing venue is actually the densely-packed salt remnants of an ancient lake bed formed over thousands of years,” said Doug Evans, Chairman of the Save the Salt Coalition. “The salt crust has been shrinking and thinning for decades due to both human and environmental factors. We welcome this team effort approach to helping return Bonneville to its former glory.” The racers are represented by three organizations. The “Save the Salt Foundation” is a

AUG 2017 AUG 26: FRANKLIN TN: Great Americana BBQ Festival / Cruise-In: Hosted by the Franklin NOON Rotary Club. We would like to extend an invitation to your club to show off their rides. Participants would pay no entry fee and get two event tickets per vehicle (you must be in your antique or classic car). The Rotary Club will provide cash and trophies to the top three clubs with the most participation.

The BBQ Festival event is from 10 AM to 8 PM and we would ask that cars arrive between 9 and 11 to get in place to hopefully avoid anticipated later-in-the-morning traffic. Show vehicles will have a designated entrance and parking, with parking restricted to show vehicles only. All day attendance is not required, but would be appreciated, as we understand folks have other commitments. We will have a 20x20 tent for car exhibitors to get out of the sun. Bring a lawn chair. Walker Chevrolet is sponsoring the show and within the designated parking area a section will be set aside for Corvettes “ONLY”, for those wanting to park in the

Corvette Corral. Car show parking will be in an area close to the activities so that food, beverage, bathroom facilities, and music acts can easily be accessed. The BBQ cooking competition concludes around noon with awards at about 2:30. This year’s event will include craft beer vendors, allowing those who desire to sample some local beverages. Returning this year is the Tennessee Distillers, which sponsored the Bourbon Tent for additional adult beverages. NOTE: The good thing is that space is not a problem at Harlinsdale, so we are not limited on participation. It is not required to pre-register, but it would help to get an antic-

ipated car count from each club a couple of weeks in advance, so we can plan accordingly. Please respond to our club Secretary Randy Shemin at randyshemin@gmail.com . This is a great opportunity to represent and promote our hobby, our clubs and support a great charitable event, which gives back to the local community. We hope you will elect to participate. Thank you for your time and consideration, and please let me know of any questions or if I can help in any way. My phone number and direct e-mail address is Phone: 615-642-5822, paulcollins@sullivanengineering.com Franklin Noon Rotary Club website: http:// www.franklinnoonrotary.com/ 14

Photo’s by Craig W

As long as people can remember, every year during SPEEDWEEK at Bonneville, there is an event that happens nightly, after the days racing is done. It’s not on “The Salt”, as everyone leaves the sodium paradise to head to hotels and such to freshen up and grab a bite to eat at the end of a long day of racing or being a spectator. After getting a fresh water rinse and some good grub, gearheads, hot rodders and racers head over to “The Nugget” in Wendover UT, for one of the best “unofficial” cars shows anywhere! Hot rods, customs, early ‘60’s performance cars and much more are parked on the blacktop and elsewhere, for everyone to enjoy. Cars from across the USA are there, as “The Salt” brings them all together bot day and at night also. We could go on and on about how cool this is, but we’ll cut the words short and let ace lensman Craig Wise’s pictures show you just a little bit of the nightly fun at “the Nugget” at Speedweek 2017.
