“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

at the same time, about forming a “National” Organization too. The main reason for the National Organization now known as The NSRA was to better help hot rodders secure insurance for their cars. With numbers comes a lot of things, insurance being one of them. 600 entries showed up that weekend in Peoria. No body really knew what to expect! This was the largest street rod gathering ever….EVER! “Street is Neat” was the slogan conceived by R&C's Tom Medley, and with a successful event and the beginnings of a national organization, the street rod scene was looking neat indeed. Attendance at the second Nationals doubled, and in recent years, the event has grown to attract more than 14,000 cars. The NSRA has more than 50,000 members today. Many many businesses were launched after the first Street Rod Nationals. Many are still in business today.

It’s Street Rod Nationals Weekend! While most gearheads that will attend this weekends NSRA Street Rod Nationals event in Louisville KY are focused on the cars, vendors, new products and all the rest that goes with this huge event, there is a whole other side to this event. It’s what this event started 48 years ago. While there are older shows in different parts of the country, no argument here, there are none that have had a more profound impact on street rodding, hot rodding or big time summer car shows. FACT! A lot of the long standing events that are older than the “Nat’s” are “indoor” events, that take place in many cases on either coast for the most part. Nothing wrong with that at all. In fact we here at the Gearhead Gazzette have participated many time at these longstanding events and we like them very much. Let’s go back to that impact piece I mentioned a little bit ago. In 1969, staff members of Rod & Custom magazine (wish they would bring it back) brainstormed the idea of a big event, in the middle of the USA, to bring together as many hot rodders as possible. They looked at a map and picked Peoria IL as the location to hold this new event. August of 1970 was the date, as this would afford as many as possible to participate.

Other organizations were formed for different groups and types of vehicles. Other outdoor events that had a regional draw, saw the benefit of advertising and those events grew to be big players in this thing called hot rodding. Celebrate this weekend at the NSRA Nat’s! Celebrate what the Nat’s did. Our hobby, love, passion was able to take the next step in hot rodding. And grow what it became today. Did it do it all...no. Did it give it one helluva shove...yes it did.

There was selfishness in the minds of the R&C staffer’s with this event idea. Travel budgets were small and being based in California, they had a desire to feature and shoot cars from other parts of the USA. Californina was easy as it was there back yard.

STREET IS STILL NEAT!

This has forced some racers to abandon world record attempts at the iconic Bonneville Salt Flats and pursue other sites – some outside the USA altogether. “What can we do?” has been their clarion call. This program answers with a small but meaningful way for individuals who enjoy land speed racing to make an immediate, positive impact. Additionally, the program will help reduce salt which is unintentionally transported to the nearby towns of Wendover, UT, and West Wendover, NV, demonstrating to residents and business owners that land speed racers are respectful visitors. The Bonneville Salt Flats has been a stellar amateur human performance laboratory for more than a century bringing international acclaim and interest to a once pristine Utah desert. This natural wonder needed about 11,000 years to develop. Land speed racers have used it respectfully for nearly 70 years, while warning government officials for decades that it’s federal land use policies have brought serious damage to the racing venue.

Bonneville Salt Flats, UT-- Responding to calls from racers in the land speed racing community, the Save the Salt Coalition and the Utah Alliance announced the roll-out of an all-volunteer salt saving program: “Saving Bonneville, One Wheel at a Time”

  

Developed to keep the salt crust where it belongs, on the playa, the program is a combined joint effort of all active race-sanctioning bodies: Southern California Timing Association Utah Salt Flats Racing Association Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials

Beginning with the 2017 racing season, each of the above racing organizations will erect a special clean-off area adjacent “roads end,” where the paved access road terminates and vehicles transition onto the salt crust. Marked by the Save the Salt / Utah Alliance banner, the area will remind racers to “do their part to save the salt” by stopping to scrape off built-up salt from wheel wells, bumpers, and undercarriages, leaving the salt behind as they leave the salt – every time. Many racers and spectators, both American and International, are troubled by the declining size and thickness of the International Speedway.

The Save the Salt Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to restore the Bonneville Salt Flats. The Save the Salt Coalition is an umbrella group comprised of automotive and motorsports companies and organizations with a vested interest in this national treasure. The Utah Alliance is a volunteer Utah-based advocacy group using its expertise and contacts at the local level. All three organizations are collaborating to keep Bonneville available for future generations. 6

Everything you ever wanted to know about that sweet-smelling substance known as Bondo is right here. How It’s Made Specially-designed, computer-controlled equipment releases a polyester resin and other ingredients one at a time, in a select order into a big mixer. The mixture is blended at high and low speeds, hot and cold temperatures until it’s thoroughly mixed.

Each formula has a unique blend of ingredients to create the performance designed for its category.

Once the materials are properly mixed, Quality Control is performed. If all is in spec, the material is pumped into a can.

More Fun Facts 

In 2010, Bondo Body Filler was used to fix a pothole during the Daytona 500. The race continued after only a 45-minute delay  Taxidermists use Bondo Body Filler to create shapes and set parts on some animals  The world’s largest can of Bondo Body Filler was 215 gallons and on display at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2011

Finally, the closure is pressed on and finished with the lid and hardener, and placed into a box for shipping.

The Science Behind Bono Bondo Body Filler utilizes a two-part formula to create a chemical bond to the surface. Hardener is added to start a chemical reaction, which cross-links with other ingredients in the mix and causes the filler to gel. Once the gelling starts, the chemical reaction causes the filler to harden until it becomes sandable.

In 2016, 3M produced 16.5 million pounds of Bondo Body Filler

Story—Jimmy B / Photo’s by Michael Corrazelli

It truly is a Father’s Day Tradition! Since 1967, each Father Day Weekend, the L.A. Roadster have held their annual Roadster Show and Swap meet every year. The show has taken place and continues to be held at the L.A. County Fairgrounds in Pomona since 1980 when it moved there from the Great Western Exhibit Center, where it was held from 1968 to 1979.

This event is know for primarily 2 things….Hot Rod Roadsters and the HUGE Swap Meet that is part of the event. Roadsters showing here are 1936 and earlier and must be finished with paint. Primer won’t get you into the Roadster show portion of the event. Roadsters from all around the USA and abroad come to this yearly event to be part of all the fun. 24

The swap meet, as we mentioned earlier is HUGE! It cover 3 of the fairgrounds huge parking lots. If you are looking for that elusive and hard to find part, odds are you will find it here. Some of the vendors in the swap meet, only come to this event to set up and sell what they have. Add in cars for sale and manufacturers set up in the swap meet and in the roadster display area and you better have good walking shoes and a big straw hat to keep the June sun off you, as you hunt for that special part or just wander around to see what you might find that you have to take home with you.

country, all with pre-1936 roadsters. In 1960 the club started the annual LA Roadster Show & Swap Meet.
