“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” “their word and handshake is the only deal you need” There is another description of “hot rodder” for us too. This is a person who has their own specialty vehicle, who is there for you when you need a hand working on your car, who would stop in a rain to help you if you broke down, who would let you use their shop if needed. Everybody knows them and their car or truck. They say what they mean and always honor their word and their handshake is the only deal you need.
What is a “car person”? Who is a “hot rodder”? Everybody will have their own idea/ opinion on these questions...and that’s ok. Other magazine editors and writers will have their thoughts also. Your feelings, thoughts and opinions are shaped by your own experiences in our hobby/lifestyle. To us, a “car person” is someone who enjoys some type of motorsports or many types. They may not own a specialty car or truck, but still enjoy seeing them, being around them or going to any of the various events there are that happen around cool vehicles.
Here in Middle TN we lost a REAL HOT RODDER this past weekend, and I lost a friend. Richard “Beaver” Helleis is and was a real “hot rodder”. Everybody remembers Beaver for the Willys he wanted for a long time and built. So many friends, always ready to help another hot rodder out. He was one of the good guys...you know what I mean.
To us, a “hot rodder” is anyone who has a cool car or truck, built or bought, that they enjoy, drive, show off, work on, etc. We use the term loosely as it can encompass hot rods, muscle cars, antiques, classics, restored, race cars, well you get the drift. A “hot rodder” has taken it up a notch as they have a “specialty vehicle” of some type.
Our prayers go out to his wife Linda, his children, family and his friends, especially his good friend Bill. Rest in peace friend…..
To us the term hot rod means the vehicle you have modified whether for race, form, function or just showing.

Road Rumblings….
Hagerty Insurance has identified its list of current production year vehicles that will be classic collectibles of the future.
the TT-RS corners at an extreme 1.2 gforces and accelerates from 0-62 mph in only 3.7 seconds.
Ten vehicles in the 2017 production run by major worldwide automakers stand out as the likeliest to grow in value and appeal to classic car enthusiasts, according to Hagerty.
Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 ($61,140)—The Camaro has seen many generations and performance upgrades, and this is the most important one yet. The 2017 Camaro ZL1 has a stat sheet that would make last year's Corvette nervous, and comes to the table ready to race. The legend continues to inspire today just as it did 50 years ago, as the Camaro reaches a whole new audience with this instant collector's item
"All 10 have that 'it' factor that makes them stand out from the crowd," said McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty. "In some cases it's power, in some cases it's innovation or drivability, but all of them have the qualities that define a future classic."
Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 ($40,995)— Americans love their trucks, especially purpose-built, off-road versions. The ZR2 comes with a suite of off-road tech including dynamic shocks, locking front/ rear differentials, increased ride height and widened track. Its future collectability lives in the hands of Chevrolet's production volume planning staff
In order to be eligible for the Hagerty Hot List, a vehicle must be produced within the 2017 model year and have an MSRP of less than $100,000. The Hagerty Hot List for 2017 includes: Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio ($72,000) —Packing 505 horsepower, the Giulia Quadrifoglio can reach 60 mph in 3.8 seconds from a complete standstill via a biturbo V6 engine. Beating every other car in its class around the Nurburgring, the Giulia Quadrifoglio takes the crown in its segment
Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport ($65,450) —With a sprint to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and an 11.8 second quarter-mile time, the Grand Sport has the technology to compete with the big boys while offering a striking visual reference to its ancestors: the 1963 and 1996 Grand Sports Fiat 124 Spider Abarth ($28,195)—When Fiat announced they were resurrecting the classic 124 Spider, many enthusiasts were ecstatic.
Audi TT-RS ($60,000 est.)—Bringing supercar speed to the sports car market is the wildly popular follow-up to the TT-RS. With 400 horsepower from a widelyacclaimed, new five-cylinder,

When the firm announced the architecture would be shared with the Mazda Miata, which made last year's Hot List, roadster fans knew they were in for a treat. With a zero to 60 mph sprint in 6.3 seconds, the 124 Spider provides more power than its cousin through a MultiAir turbo engine with true Italian verve
turbocharged, flat-four engine, the 718s offer 25 more horsepower than previous models, even with reduced displacement
Toyota 86 ($26,255)—Since 2013, the Scion FR-S has been the darling of the entry-level sports car market. Now, its spirit lives on in the upgraded Toyota 86. The 86 brings on more aggressive styling with a wider stance while agility is turned-up a notch through shock tuning and a spring rate change. The Toyota 86 comes in a manual, which is a major win for driving fans who indulge in the purity of a three-pedal car
Ford Raptor ($49,520)—The original Ford Raptor defined a new production truck segment when it debuted in 2009. The first generation special edition F-150 made it through the economic collapse, fuel crisis and the Baja 1000 and due to conservative production decisions is already becoming a collector favorite. For 2017, the Raptor is back with bigger muscles and a makeover, featuring additional horsepower and weighing 500 pounds less Mazda Miata RF ($31,555)—This familiar face is a popular alumnus of the 2016 Hot List. This year it brings an exciting new feature: a hard top targa roof. Featuring the same fantastic qualities that make the roadster Miata such a hit last year, the RF opens the door to a new market with a more rigid structure and coupelike design Porsche 718 Cayman / Boxster ($53,900$56,000)—Those who have a love for cars have a love for driving and few things are better to drive than the 2017 Porsche 718 lineup. Featuring a brand new 7

Story & Photo’s by Jimmy B
2017 to say the least.
For the 68th time, AMERICA’s MOST BEAUTIFUL ROADSTER was crowned at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona Ca.
The competition for the AMBR award is always fierce, and no one envy’s the judges who are faced with the difficult task of picking a winner every year. It’s often very difficult to predict which car will drive away with the coveted prize, but this year show goer’s could tell the Mulholland Speedster was on a different level.
Actually one could say that “the buzz” on this years winner actually started a year ago at the 67th GNRS. Troy Ladd & Hollywood Hot Rods had the Mulholland Speedster on display in all it’s bare metal glory, showing everyone what was to come in a year. Obviously no disappointment in the finished vehicle.
The build was truly the talk of the show, with huge buzz on social media and big crowds gathered around it all weekend long.
While the 1936 Packard garnered a lot of attention all weekend long, there were 12 other Roadsters vying for the AMBR Title also.
The car is owned by Bruce Wanta and was built by Troy Ladd and his team at Hollywood Hot Rods in Burbank CA. It took Troy and his team six years to complete the build. The majority of AMBR winners, which are hot rods in the more traditional sense, the Mulholland Speedster is inspired by the historic coach-built automobiles of the ’30s.
Most years the AMBR contest is all hot rods, like ‘29 fords on deuce rails and any number of ‘32 Ford roadsters. This year, while the hot rod roadsters were there representing very well, besides the “coach built” Packard, there was another “coach built” roadster from Rick Dore. Some new dynamic’s for the judges in 14
HHR’s sculpted, streamlined and smoothed out a ’36 Packard body. To say it looks positively stunning, especially when covered in a gleaming coat of red paint from M.G.J. Enterprises, is an understatement. The paint just draws you closer. Features like the power retractable roof that smoothly tucks away in the trunk area, and it’s one of the few roadsters that looks equally beautiful with the top up or down.
The Goolsby Hot Rod Shop built “The Time Merchant” Roadster Pick Up was probably second in talk about who would win. From it’s Oldsmobile engine to the “bicycle” style fenders on all four corners, to its’ gleaming paint, this hot rod generated a lot of interest.
Power for the Speedster is equally exotic! A 292ci Lincoln V12 with Hogan aluminum heads, Winfield carbs and a Latham supercharger power this cruiser. The transmission is a T5 5-speed manual while the custom independent rear suspension includes a Winters quick-change differential. There is so much more and not enough room to list it all in this article.
The “Hill Country Flyer” out of the Austin Speed Shop drew big crowds also. From it’s orange hued exterior, to it’s understated engine and wheels, it attracted a big following too. This ‘32 Roadster showed that with great detail work, like the painted and lettered Hemi Valve covers for just one item, you can go a long
Some of the other hot rods in the AMBR competition had lots of support and folks were talking about them too. 15

way in the AMBR contest.
The very cool “MUROC Speedster out of STOKERS HOT ROD FACTORY, caught a lot of attention with it’s mile deep black paint and simplistic build, takes us all back to when running the dry lakes in the late 30’s and before the war meant running a “banger” and mechanical brakes versus “juice” brakes. More than one time over the 3 days we heard comments on the brake rods and the true “’ol skool” set up this car has. This one showed how our hot rod hero’s raced back at the beginning of hot rodding!
18
Judge for yourself, which one you like the best out of the 13 contenders here on these pages. They are winners all, as they had the right stuff to make it into building 4 at the Fairplex at the 68th GNRS and be part of an elite group going after the title of AMERICA’s MOST BEAUTIFUL ROADSTER.
