“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” “guys who started with nothing or maybe the GI Bill…” Like many of you, I get other “hot rod” type publications in the “snail mail” box. I get the monthly publications from both of the big organization, NSRA & Goodguys. While thumbing through and reading the latest issues from both, I was taken aback by the stories in each about the hot rod hero’s we have last in the past couple of months. We share info when these iconic folks leave us for the big cruise in the sky, so we see who we are losing. I have written about this before, as these are the folks who after WW2, created what we now enjoy and sometimes take for granted. What really got me this past week was the shear number of people that have left us. The one publication had 2 plus pages with stories on who had passed away from the hot rod world. I t kind of knocked me back. The little voice in my head said WOW...that's a lot of cool guys gone all at once! These were guys who started with nothing or maybe the GI Bill ( Remember that!) as a minimum and started businesses and companies that created the hobby, sport, lifestyle we enjoy today. These were not necessarily college degreed guys, but common sense and a bit of adventure and spunk to try something and take a chance. And guess what, with hard work it paid off. These are guys who will not having formal class room training in all cases,
figured out how t engineer and build “stuff” to make their cars go faster and be safer too. Heck the whole Safety side of our hobby is an offshoot of what was going on in the late 40’s, 50’s and 60’s too. These guys threw nothing away or very little. Their 1-800-BUYSTUFF was a local junk yard or a rode trip to a junkyard that had more than what they could find in the one close to them. These were guys who worked in the defense industry and built planes and jets and figured out quickly that those plane parts were some “good Stuff” and they adapted and used those parts to improve their hot rods and cars. Bomber seats were just that, out of an airplane that the bomb operator sat in. Check out the AHRF—American Hot Rod Foundation. David Steele is the guy that is the current care taker and steering AHRF. They have some much cool stuff that you can learn about all of what I have written about here this week. After letting the thought of losing these icons and pioneers soak in...I once again began to wonder, “who will fill their shoes” as George Jones sang. Take a kid to a car show… and another… our hobbies future counts on it...

“the fun starts here”….
Discovery Rebrands Velocity as Motor Trend Network DISCOVERY Channel will remodel its automotive-focused Velocity cabler as Motor TrendNetwork in the fall, part of a strategic effort to deliver more direct-to-consumer streaming services tailored for viewers with rabid interests. David Zaslav, Discovery Inc. president-CEO, plans to double down on direct-to-consumer offerings designed to “nourish passionate audiences” now that Discovery has completed its acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive, parent company of Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, and other cablers. The focus is delivering original content that is distinct from the complementary linear channels and considered must-have for super-fans of a given genre. The super-fan orientation of the enlarged Discovery will be a major theme at the company’s upfront presentation to advertisers and media this evening at New York’s Alice Tully Hall. “We see ourselves as a company that is focused on passionate fans and passionate audiences,” Zaslav told Variety. “We have content and brands that nourish passionate audiences for food, cooking, science, Oprah and cars.” Discovery and the parent org of Motor Trend, the automotive news and content provider, set a joint venture last summer that saw Motor Trend vast archive, Discovery’s Velocity and more than two dozen other automotive-related brands combined into an entity known as The Enthusiast Network, or TEN. TEN has now been rebranded Motor Trend Group. Discovery owns a majority of the partnership with New York-based GoldenTree Asset Management “It’s a channels business, a direct-to-consumer business and an IP business,” Zaslav said. The pact with Motor Trend was attractive to Discovery because the brand already has about 165,000 subscribers who pay $5 a month for the Motor Trend OnDemand streaming content service that is differentiated from the cabler’s linear programming. The streaming platform is designed for short-form content, news and video viewed on mobile devices. The deal with Motor Trend and the absorption of Scripps’ blue-chip TV brands has pointed Zaslav and Discovery firmly in the direction of DTC as a growth market. Motor Trend Network is expanding in international markets. A free ad-supported linear channel will launch in Italy later this month; the on-demand app went up on Amazon in the U.K. in December. “It helped us understand what people will pay for and what really excites them,” Zaslav said. “The best way to think about these (DTC) products are as the magazine of the new era. In the past if you loved cars, you subscribed to Motor Trend magazine. Now you subscribe to a streaming product.” 6
American Powertrain Expands Electric Power Steering Applications American Powertrain has announced new applications for its bolt-on EZ Electric Power Steering system. The system was introduced several years ago for Ferrari, Jaguar and Porsche model sports cars, and is now offered for classics, early model sports cars, street rods and custom builds. American Powertrain’s EZ Electric Power Steering replaces the top section of a customer’s existing steering column with a computer controlled, electric motor-assisted column. The integrated computer senses both torque and speed to adjust steering effort at low or highway speeds, according to the company, and the result is the feel and accuracy of a car with power steering. The system is ideal for comfortable cruising and parking, as well as serious road racing and auto-crossing, as the system cannot cavitate, slip or stutter no matter how quickly the steering wheel is being moved, according to American Powertrain. With installation, the vehicle retains the original steering wheel, steering box, collar and turn signal indicator for a stock look. A small dial installed under the dash adjusts the power steering level of assist. The EZ Electric Power Steering system comes with everything needed for installation, including model-specific instructions. The system does not use a power steering pump, hose, belt or power steering fluid, so there is no risk of squeaking and no need to replace fluids, according to American Powertrain. Complete systems are currently available for 1955-‘68 Corvettes, 1965-‘70 Mustangs and Cougars, and for street rods and most European sports cars. Systems for the Camaro, Tri5, Chevelle and other popular models are on the way, according to American Powertrain. For more information about American Power’s EZ Electric Power Steering systems or TREMEC transmission kits for Ford, GM or Mopar, visit www.americanpowertrain.com or call 931-646-4836. 7

Words—Jimmy B Photos—Arties Party
It's true...all car folk love a challengeespecially for a worthy cause! So, when renowned pinstriper Art “East Coast Artie” Schilling called up looking for advice on a few parts for a ’64 Pontiac Catalina Safari station wagon, most of the companies knew this wasn’t a typical request.
George Munsterman, of First Class Productions, offered to give Schilling a car to “clean up and paint." After the two spotted a ’64 Pontiac Catalina Safari station wagon, Artie’s Party Cruiser was born! This vehicle will be auctioned off for charity during this year’s Saratoga Auto Museum Auction, Sept 21-22, at the Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY.
What originally started out as a charity pinstriping party, organized by Schilling during the Syracuse Nationals, has now grown into one of the most ambitious charity project builds in recent memory.
A simple pinstriping project has very quickly took on a life of it's own! So, with the support from “Big” Al Liebmann and over 30 manufacturers, Artie’s Party Cruiser has gone from concept to creation!
“My original intent was to just clean and paint the wagon, but as projects go, it is now on a rotisserie being completely rebuilt,” Schilling said.
.
At the 2017 Syracuse Nationals, "Artie’s Party” raised $66,000, with proceeds from the pinstriping artwork donated to the Ronald McDonald House of Central New York. Determined to build on the momentum of 2017’s hugely successful event, Schilling’s longtime friend, 26

and built by long time friend, Joe Quantana, of Joe Que’s Auto Body of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., who took on the undertaking of the build...much appreciated Joe!
The Kool Surfin’ Safari Wagon wants to say THANK YOU to some early sponsors like Jasper Engines, who provided rebuilding of the engine. Gratitude for the new chassis components from Ames Performance, which are being installed
“It’s really incredible the amount of support we have received from the automotive community for Artie’s Party Cruiser,” Schilling said. “I called up Mike at EATON Detroit Spring to ask him if he made springs for the wagon and he immediately said he was on board and asked where I wanted the springs sent. It is only because of companies like EATON Detroit Spring and all of the other generous sponsors, that we can make Artie’s Party Cruiser a reality.”

If it’s early November in Middle Tennessee, that means it’s time for the KRIS KRINGLE INVITATIONAL KAR Show. 2017 saw the 14th annual edition of this Mid-South classic taking place in Franklin Tennessee at the Williamson County AgExpo Center. Over 100 vehicles were on display this year.
The show is actually a blend of 2 events into one big event. While the car show occupies the main floor of the building, the upper ring is filled with arts & crafts for the Christmas Season. This event has something for everyone!
Started 14 years ago by our friend Tom Akers as a way to keep the car show season going a little bit longer, he saw the benefit of blending the 2 event into 1 fun deal. Unfortunately, Tom was not able to see #14, as he left us way too early after a fight with he Big “C”. He was greatly missed by the show staff and many of 40
the participants who knew Tom from the Middle Tennessee car show scene.
This is a great format for a car show. They fill the building with cars from 1900 thru and up to current models. Being its an Invitational show, the organizers get to select the cars that best represent each year. They also fill the Middle of the show with a themed collection of cool rides. Add in vendors, music, food and a visit from Santa, and it’s a great 2 days or gearheads and cool cars, truck and motorcycles too. #15 is in the works now, and as soon as the contact info becomes available, we will have it for you.

APR 2018: APR 18-22: BOWLING GREEN KY: HOLLEY EFI OUTLAW STREET CAR REUNION V: Event being held at Beech Bend Raceway. 2018 will keep a lot of the classes the same as before while seeing new purse structures, new class sponsor layouts and more. Radial vs. The World will pay $15,000 to the event champion. RVW has long been a fan favorite for all involved, with the elapsed times nearing the 3.6 second range and most cars well over 200 miles per hour in cars weighing in at nearly 3,000 pounds on a tire no wider than a 315 drag radial. X275 Drag Radial returns with a cool $10,000 into the winner’s hands at the end of the day. Limited Drag Radial brings an old school, stock appearing style category into the fold for the third consecutive season. LDR has quickly become a fan favorite class with the tight side-by-side racing and the stock appearance factor of race cars rushing down the eighth-mile in 4.2 seconds or quicker at over 180 miles per hour. Ultra Street MX235 to join the others once again to round out our radial line-up for the fifth running of the Outlaw
Street Car Reunion. In 2017, we introduced the Pro Street Motorcycle category to small tire/drag radial fans for the first time and had 25 entries fill the pits to launch one of the strongest PST counts of the 2017 season. For those who do not know, Pro Street Motorcycle is a category with no wheelie bars and on a ‘radial style’ motorcycle tire – making them a great fit to a drag radial event for style and performance. In 2018, we are proud to announce they are returning for yet another exciting event, already with committed sponsorship from Great Lakes Racecraft and others expressing strong interest in our program. 6.00 Index and 7.00 Index returns to anchor our event and bring in a host of the best sportsman racers across the globe.
We stepped outside of the mold in 2017 and performed two events in one weekend with the Thursday Throwdown bonus race that was a huge hit, with over 50 entries in both classes! When the main event rolled around, car count grew even more and we had over 60 entries in each class for the big race that paid $5,000 to Win. Close to the same program is on tap in 2018 with a few small purse changes to make the payout reach more drivers and continue to strive ourselves to build this event into the Sportsman Super Bowl, year in and year out. FOR SALE: 1940 Packard coupe. This is the last year of the freestanding headlights. It looks a lot like a ’40 Ford coupe except for the grill and hood. The car is original, very solid, in good shape. All of the chrome has been re-chromed, some still in paper wrap. All new tinted glass, as well as the original glass, a roll of upholstery material, but the seats and headliner are in nice shape, (door panels need some work. The dash has the instruments removed to re-wood grain, (I have vinyl wrap burled wood that I was going to use to cover the dash), but all of the instruments are in good original shape, wires are tagged and everything comes with the car. I also have paperwork and history that dates back to the late ‘60s. Going with my plan, I figured I’d have it back on the road with a few weeks work. Reality is, however, that I have no time and must get the house in shape to sell before April. If you are interested or know someone that might enjoy this fine car please have them give me a call, (256) 665-3345. (3-15-18)
FOR SALE: 1986 Mazda, RX7. This is a one owner car in nice shape but has been parked inside for about 8 years. It is all original with the original rotary engine and 5 speed manual transmission. There is an easy conversion kit made right here in Lacy Springs, that lets you install a LS engine if anyone wants to make a street rod daily driver out of it. I’ve seen this done and it looks like factory equipment. (256) 665-3345. (3-15-18)
