“the fun starts here”….
Earlier this week, the FORD Mustang turned 54 years old!! Ford held a birthday, a cars and coffee type events at world headquarters to celebrate with Mustang fans and lovers of America’s original pony car. April in Michigan can bring any kind of weather and it did! Die hard Ford Mustang fans refused to let a little snow spoil a birthday party though for the car they love and adore. Despite being well into middle age, passion for the Mustang and all its variants and offshoots has never been stronger. Sure, the sales figures can tell you a lot. Ford sold 125,809 last year (2017), more than any other sports coupe in the world. But that number doesn't say it all. Really, it takes just one visit to your local cars and coffee or a snowy celebration at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, to see the passion for the Mustang. The car that started the whole pony car phenomenon is now in its sixth generation. Sure, there were some duds along the way, but generally each model has been an improvement over the last. Each year on April 17 — the day the 1964-1/2 Mustang was released, — Ford has held a gathering at its corporate headquarters. April in Detroit is usually pleasant. Cars are beginning to thaw after a long winter storage, so everyone is usually excited to put some miles on the odometer. That was not the case this year. In Michigan, Spring 2018 has been unusually cold and bitter. Ice storms over the weekend before the Mustangs birthday left thousands in the Dearborn area without power. If it wasn’t ice, it was cold winds and snow. Some would say not exactly an ideal time to celebrate the birth of a 54-year-old motoring icon. There was snow on the roads the morning of the Cars and Coffee celebration, and it was predicted to continue throughout the day. No one really knew what kind of showing to expect because of the weather. The expectation was that there would be some fifth- and sixth-gen cars, but those were newer and were used as daily drivers rain or shine. A Fox body or SN-95 wouldn't be unusual, but no one was really expecting anyone to roll out a first-gen car for fear of some idiot misjudging braking distances in the cold. What a pleasant surprise! As expected, there were a lot of modern cars, but there was a small collection of older models all lined up at the side. According to some Ford employees, people starting lining up around 7:30 in the morning….BRRRR!!! Happy birthday, Mustang. Here's to many more. Here’s some of the cars at the birthday celebration at FORD HQ and some favorites from over the years….The Mustang has touched many folks in the world! 6

APR 2018: APR 18-22: BOWLING GREEN KY: HOLLEY EFI OUTLAW STREET CAR REUNION V: Event being held at Beech Bend Raceway. 2018 will keep a lot of the classes the same as before while seeing new purse structures, new class sponsor layouts and more. Radial vs. The World will pay $15,000 to the event champion. RVW has long been a fan favorite for all involved, with the elapsed times nearing the 3.6 second range and
most cars well over 200 miles per hour in cars weighing in at nearly 3,000 pounds on a tire no wider than a 315 drag radial. X275 Drag Radial returns with a cool $10,000 into the winner’s hands at the end of the day. Limited Drag Radial brings an old school, stock appearing style category into the fold for the third consecutive season. LDR has quickly become a fan favorite class with the tight side-by-side racing and the stock appearance factor of race cars rushing down the eighth-mile in 4.2 seconds or quicker at over 180 miles per hour. Ultra Street MX235 to join the others once again to round out our radial line-up for the fifth running of the Outlaw Street Car Reunion. In 2017, we introduced the Pro Street Motorcycle category to small tire/drag radial fans for the first time and had 25 entries fill the pits to launch one of the strongest PST counts of the 2017 season. For those who do not know, Pro Street Motorcycle is a category with no wheelie bars and on a ‘radial style’ motorcycle tire – making them a great fit to a drag radial event for style and performance. In 2018, we are proud to announce they are returning for yet another exciting event, already with committed sponsorship from Great Lakes Racecraft and others expressing strong interest in our program. 6.00 Index and 7.00 Index returns to anchor our event and bring in a host of the best sportsman racers across the globe. We
stepped outside of the mold in 2017 and performed two events in one weekend with the Thursday Throwdown bonus race that was a huge hit, with over 50 entries in both classes! When the main event rolled around, car count grew even more and we had over 60 entries in each class for the big race that paid $5,000 to Win. Close to the same program is on tap in 2018 with a few small purse changes to make the payout reach more drivers and continue to strive ourselves to build this event into the Sportsman Super Bowl, year in and year out. How do you know it's Christmas time in SoCal? When you see the long lines around Irwindale for the Mooneyes X-Mas Party Show & Drag! The Mooneyes X-Mas Party & Drag is a huge car show with over 1000 lead sleds, bombs, rat rods, hot rods and kustoms covered the parking lot at Irwindale, Raceway. On top of all that, for the 2017 edition, exactly 100 race cars showed up for the NHRA sanctioned 1/8-mile drags! Add in bands, vendors, a pinup contest and loads of X-Mas spirit, and even Santa knew where the fun was!
Some history for those that don’t know about Moone Equipment and Dean Moon,
30
Mooneyes (plural because there are two of them) is an ancient hot rod and speed parts company in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. founded by original hot rod hero Dean Moon over 60 years ago. Dean was a product of growing up in Southern California, working at his parents’ restaurant in Santa Fe Springs. He served in Japan after WWII then in Korea during the Korean War. So he was a real American hero on the tail end of the Greatest Generation. When Dean got back from serving his country, he came back to Southern California and founded Moon Equipment Co. to feed the burgeoning hot rod craze that was sweeping the nation. It seemed everyone had footshaped Moon gas pedals, shiny Moon gas tanks and those spun Moon wheel covers to get that extra couple mph on the salt. The most interesting thing about the Mooneyes X-Mas Party is everyone who come to it. Most hot rod gatherings are, let’s face it, a big bunch of “gray beards”, thank God for them!. The Mooneyes X-Mas Party is young guys, from all backgrounds. It’s a multicultural slice of the entire SoCal area, with as many club names in Spanish as in English. There were young guys with chinos and Pendletons; old guys in chinos and Pendletons; girls in rockabilly styles; guys with neck tattoos; guys with no tattoos at all; a guy selling Tiki carvings, a girl selling dresses out of a converted Mother’s Cookies step van; older guys doing the drag racing; younger guys hanging around talking with each other while cooking breakfast on vintage grills. Every year it’s a wonderful coming together of old guys, young guys, and a whole lot of people who love cool cars, drag racing and all things hot rod and gearhead fun. We hear Santa has his trip booked to the 2018 Mooneyes X-Mas Party already….COOLSVILLE! 31

FOR SALE: 1940 Packard coupe. This is the last year of the freestanding headlights. It looks a lot like a ’40 Ford coupe except for the grill and hood. The car is original, very solid, in good shape. All of the chrome has been re-chromed, some still in paper wrap. All new tinted glass, as well as the original glass, a roll of upholstery material, but the seats and headliner are in nice shape, (door panels need some work. The dash has the instruments removed to re-wood grain, (I have vinyl wrap burled wood that I was going to use to cover the dash), but all of the instruments are in good original shape, wires are tagged and everything comes with the car. I also have paperwork and history that dates back to the late ‘60s. Going with my plan, I figured I’d have it back on the road with a few weeks work. Reality is, however, that I have no time and must get the house in shape to sell before April. If you are interested or know someone that might enjoy this fine car please have them give me a call, (256) 665-3345. (315-18)
FOR SALE: 1936 Dodge Coupe RARE. Color-red. Interior- tan leather. Mustang 2 front end. PS, PB, PW, EDL, TC. Chevy 350 engine with Transmission 700r. 18in wheels. Excellent condition. $42,000. Call- 615-419-6232 (3/28/18)
FOR SALE: 1986 Mazda, RX7. This is a one owner car in nice shape but has been parked inside for about 8 years. It is all original with the original rotary engine and 5 speed manual transmission. There is an easy conversion kit made right here in Lacy Springs, that lets you install a LS engine if anyone wants to make a street rod daily driver out of it. I’ve seen this done and it looks like factory equipment. (256) 665-3345. (3-15-18) 68
