“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

Change ain’t easy….. And BAM… the month of May is here! The first four months of 2018 have flown by, don’t you think? Are you maximizing the fun meter in your life? You should be! With May comes a whole lot more gearhead fun across the USA. The weather gets a whole lot better and more car show, cruise-in’s and other gearhead events really increase. Just look at the size of this issue! Over 80 pages of pure hot rod fun for everyone. How do you pick and event to go to? It is an interesting question with no wrong answers. Do you look for a certain type of show? Some look for pre 48 only and some don’t care if the vehicles in the event run from 1900 to the latest and greatest available in the showroom today. The whole “cutoff” deal on events at the BIG NATIONAL events is quite the topic of discussion these days. It has surfaced again , as the GOODGUYS Organization has chosen to expand the date for which years of cars can participate in their events. They moved the cutoff to 1987 and earlier effective at their events this year. NSRA did this a few years back also, expanding the cutoff date for entries to 30 years old or older vehicles.

As with most change, we, I raise my hand up first, don’t always like it or want to embrace it. For each of us, how we react depends on what the change is. We as hot rodders have become very protective of what vehicles we want to see in events. Being honest about it, the older a hot rodder (I have gray hair and beard now too) the more protective we get about “pre-48” or ’72 & earlier. That’s ok. It’s what we have grown up with and aged with. Remember though, we were young once too, with a later model car and wanting to participate in the shows and events too. Fast forward to today...same thing is going on today. Younger hot rodders want to be part of the hot rod fun. Because they have an “80’s something car, why should they be kept out of an event. As I have said many times, we need to grow our hobby and to do that, we must bring younger hot rodders into our hobby. If all we do is exclude and leave out folks, our hobby will die and disappear. To GOODGUYS, I say BRAVO for making this change. I can’t wait to meet some new hot rodders next week at the Nashville Nationals!

“the fun starts here”….

The ididit Car Show & Open House is expected to be bigger as the company invites all show-worthy vehicles to its headquarters in Tecumseh, Michigan. The event that has been an end-of-summer tradition dating back to 1991 previously showcased only hot rods, street rods, muscle cars, sports cars and trucks from model year 1985 and older. “We are extremely excited to open up our annual car show to all of the great vehicles in Michigan and throughout the Great Lakes region, regardless of year, make or model,” said Ted Keating of ididit. “We want everyone who loves beautiful cars and trucks to join us in celebrating the hot-rodding lifestyle.” Trophies for the event will be made in-house by ididit for the following eight categories: • • • • • •

1948-Older Street Rod 1949-’64 Car 1965-’79 Car 1980-Newer Car 1948-’66 Truck1967-’87 Truck 1988-Newer Truck

Also new for the show this year will be a T-shirt design contest involving students from the graphic imaging classes at LISD Tech Center in Adrian, Michigan. Submissions will be posted on Facebook prior to the show, with the top vote-getter becoming the official T-shirt design for the event. The event takes place on Sept 15, 2018. Registration is free. The deadline to register is Sept. 7. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods for a food drive. The Lenawee Humane Society will raffle a custom golf cart featuring an ididit steering column. 6

Supercharged 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet Will Be The Quickest Yet In 1968 Ford unleashed a purposed-built racer on the world, and the record books have never been the same. Some 50 years later the company’s performance division will celebrate this golden anniversary with a limited run of 2018 Cobra Jet Mustangs legal for racing in NHRA, NMCA, and NMRA classes. Packing projected mid-8-second/150-MPH potential courtesy of a supercharged 5.2liter engine, a robust drivetrain, and a drag-ready suspension, Ford Performance promises this next-gen Cobra Jet will be its quickest straight-line pony yet. “From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day Cobra Jet racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build the Cobra Jet brand based on its success at the track over five decades,” Eric Cin, global director, Ford Performance Parts, said. “That, in turn, has inspired generations of Mustang fans to create their own performance machines for the street.” Appropriately, only 68 of these anniversary editions are set for construction in the 2018 model year. These cars will only be available in Oxford White or Race Red, and they can be optioned up with a special 50th anniversary graphics package. Look for the reveal of more details about this turnkey drag racer this summer. Ford Performance only shared one teaser rendering of the 50th anniversary CJ, but closer inspection reveals an airy grille, a cowl-induction hood, aerodynamic hood pins, and a familiar 2018 Mustang fascia. The grille wears a 50th anniversary badge. *50th anniversary badging • Drag race-specific coil-over suspension • Four-link rear suspension • NHRA-certified roll cage • Optional commemorative 50th anniversary graphics package • Oxford White or Race Red paint • Racetech FIA seats • Strange Engineering 9-inch solid rear axle • Supercharged 5.2-liter Coyote V8 • Weld Racing wheels with specially designed 50th anniversary badging 7

MAY 2018 MAY 3: LAS VEGAS NV: LS FEST WEST HOOVER DAM CRUISE: Our inaugural cruise went better than we could have hoped for and we had the chance to meet many of you face-to-face. On top of that, the cruise ended up being an amazing photo opportunity and the sounds of raucous LS exhaust notes bouncing off the canyon

walls is not one we will soon forget. If you missed it last year then we’ve got good news for you, LSX Magazine will be back at it again this year and we hope to see even more of you turn out. Just like last year, we will likely be pulling cars for features along the way. So, if you’ve got a ride that you think is magazine worthy, show up and you might just snag a spot in our pages. And, even if you don’t, it’s a great way to meet other LS- and LT-owners that are just as crazy about their ride as you are. We will gather at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway starting at 6:30 p.m., after which we will depart for the dam at 7 p.m. sharp. Our first leg will take us to the Hoover Dam Visitor Center which affords wonderful views of Lake Mead. After a little mingling and photo ops, we’ll head into the dam itself. Last year we had the place basically to ourselves. Turns out, there’s nothing like hearing your exhaust crackle through the coves of the Hoover Dam. Once gathered at the dam, we’ll take a huge group photo and then part ways. Last year, we ended things around 8:30 p.m. just as the sun was setting. To register for the cruise, and to let us know you plan on attending. Head over to our quick registration form at https:// www.lsfest.com/lsx-magazine-sponsors-2nd-annual-hoover-dam-cruise/ which takes less than 30 seconds to fill out.

Article / Photo’s by Jimmy B

If you have an event and it sticks around for any length of time, especially a long and great length of time, the event will get some sort of “slang name” or a “nickname” of some sort. So it goes with the Grand National Roadster Show, or GNRS as it’s shortened to.

Being one of the longest continually running car shows in the USA, you have time and history on your side. Started in 1949 by Al Sloanaker, the show was not called the Oakland Roadster show, or Roadster show. It was actually a CAR SHOW in the Oakland area and a local hot rod club talked Al into exhibiting 10 hot rods that were roadsters. The next year, Al focused on hot rods for the show and called it the Oakland Roadster show and that’s how the name started. 54

The show was held in Oakland for many many years, moving locations but always in Oakland. The show landed at the Oakland Coliseum , which became the place to be each year for the Oakland Roadster show. Hot Rodders around the world knew what you were talking about when you said Oakland Roadster Show. There were other roadster shows but when hot rodders heard “Oakland they knew exactly what was being talked about. Due to renovation and construction at the

Oakland Colosseum when the 50th anniversary show (still have my jacket from that one!) was to take place, the Oakland Collusion was not available and the show was moved to So. San Francisco at the Cow Place. For whatever reasons, the show never returned to the Oakland Coliseum after moving across the bay for the 50th show. Over the years the show grew from just roadsters to roadsters, hot rods and customs of all kinds. Al Sloanker was an excellent show promoter and could read what hot rodders liked to see. 55

Al finally decided after many many years of being the show promoter, to retire and sell the show. John Buck made a deal and took over as the promoter and we would have to say, the care taker of a big piece of hot rod history. Now John being a So-Cal guy, decided to MOVE the show to Pomona California and hold it at the L.A. County Fairplex.

The GASPS were heard worldwide...move the Oakland Roadster Show to Pomona!!! What was he thinking!! Blasphemy!! He is going to ruin it. Never be the same! All of this and more were talked about and bantered about and this was long before any social media existed. People picked up a phone and talked about it or sent letters. The Nerve!!! 56

Having attended the 69th Annual Grand National Roadster show, as it is now called, I have to tell you that the formula being used by the ROD SHOWS team is working. The buildings (all 9 of them) at the Fairplex were stuffed full of cool cars, trucks and motorcycles too. Add in the Grand Daddy Drive In on Saturday & Sunday during the show, which brings in another 800 or so cool cars outside of all the buildings.

57

The AMBR competition, all those cool cars, truck and motorcycles, vendors, live music on Saturday and Sunday, plenty of great food and all the wonderful car loving people make this one a success! It’s not the Oakland Roadster show anymore, it’s now the Grand National Roadster Show or as many refer to it as...GNRS. Really what you hear from most hot rodders is “the Roadster” show. We’re going to tell you, “the Roadster” show and all the hot rod history that goes with it, it’s in great shape. Make your plans now to be at the 70th Annual edition in January 2019. See ya there...

FOR SALE: 1940 Packard coupe. This is the last year of the freestanding headlights. It looks a lot like a ’40 Ford coupe except for the grill and hood. The car is original, very solid, in good shape. All of the chrome has been re-chromed, some still in paper wrap. All new tinted glass, as well as the original glass, a roll of upholstery material, but the seats and headliner are in nice shape, (door panels need some work. The dash has the instruments removed to re-wood grain, (I have vinyl wrap burled wood that I was going to use to cover the dash), but all of the instruments are in good original shape, wires are tagged and everything comes with the car. I also have paperwork and history that dates back to the late ‘60s. Going with my plan, I figured I’d have it back on the road with a few weeks work. Reality is, however, that I have no time and must get the house in shape to sell before April. If you are interested or know someone that might enjoy this fine car please have them give me a call, (256) 665-3345. (315-18)

FOR SALE: 1936 Dodge Coupe RARE. Color-red. Interior- tan leather. Mustang 2 front end. PS, PB, PW, EDL, TC. Chevy 350 engine with Transmission 700r. 18in wheels. Excellent condition. $42,000. Call- 615-419-6232 (3/28/18)

FOR SALE: 1986 Mazda, RX7. This is a one owner car in nice shape but has been parked inside for about 8 years. It is all original with the original rotary engine and 5 speed manual transmission. There is an easy conversion kit made right here in Lacy Springs, that lets you install a LS engine if anyone wants to make a street rod daily driver out of it. I’ve seen this done and it looks like factory equipment. (256) 665-3345. (3-15-18) 80
