“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
The change is driven by costs. Here is it the first full week in February as I pound the keys for this column. January has slipped by us at a rapid rate. How much gearhead fun have you had so far? Probably not enough and you should add more into every day. Like a lot of you gearheads, we are looking forward to maximizing our gearhead fun meter in the upcoming months. We are off to a pretty good start so far in 2018 with stops at shows in Chattanooga, Nashville and Pomona CA too. We have more fun lined up for February and March too. More on those stops in upcoming issues. Part of having gearhead fun is doing some planning. Now we know that everyone doesn't always do planning and decides at the last minute to go somewhere or to some event. What we see though is a lot of you do plan where your headed in the upcoming weeks and months. You have too, as it takes $$$ to have fun and those $$ don’t come easy (unless you hit the lottery!) and other obligations take priority. One of the interesting observations we have made, and we did 2 columns on this in 2017, is the cost of attending multi-day events across the USA. Not going to re-hash all of that now. What we are starting to see, is a change in the number of days some
of the bigger events are actually going to be happening on. Some have already pulled back from 3 days to 2 days, using Friday & Saturdays for the events. The change is driven by costs. Cost to the participants and the cost to the producers of the events. The big driver is the participants in my opinion. The actual out of pocket costs go up each year and being there are only so many “discretionary income $$” to go around, participants are only attending events for 2 days. Hence the changes by the producers. Nothing wrong with this, just be aware of the event you attend and how long it will actually happen. I believe there will be more of this coming up in the future...consumer and gearhead driven. I want to thank all of you who took time to send an email, note, do a FB post and more for my self and my family on the passing of my dad. Thank you is only 2 words, but know they come from the heart.
Jimmy B.

Hot Rodders of Tomorrow will hold its High School Engine Challenge and Junior Engine Challenge at the Super Summit Car Show at the Summit Motorsports Park this summer. That event is set for June 8-9.
Hot Rodders of Tomorrow now has 14 High School qualifying events scheduled throughout the nation for the 2018 season, with the season concluding at the Dual Championship in November and December at the SEMA and PRI shows.
Last year’s Super Summit featured cruise -ins, fun-runs, an autocross course, a cackle fest with cars of the Great Lakes Nostalgia Funny Car Circuit, a massive manufacturers’ midway and multiple commanding and car-crushing performances by Larry Swim and his Bigfoot Monster Truck.
The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge is a program that benefits schools, students and the aftermarket industry, according to organizers. The program provides a stage for automotive tech classes to compete and earn college scholarships. Teams of five students tear down and reassemble a 350 cubic inch Chevy engine. It is a timed event measuring speed and accuracy.
“Summit Racing is excited to announce our partnership with Hot Rodders of Tomorrow,” said Jim Greenleaf, Summit Racing’s motorsports manager. “As a team sponsor and as host for the regional competition at our Super Summit event, June 8th and 9th at Summit Motorsports Park, we look forward to watching the teams compete to qualify for a spot in the finals. Getting involved with these future automotive enthusiasts builds on our current youth programs including the Summit Racing Car Show Pedal Car Challenge and the NHRA Jr Drag Racing League.”
The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Junior Engine Challenge was developed for kids between the ages of 5 and 18 years old. It is design to “get wrenches in their hands and grease under their finger nails” by taking apart and rebuilding Briggs & Stratton 5-horsepower singlecylinder engines. A team consists of two members—one teammate must be 5-18 years of age. Each team will have to completely disassemble and reassemble the engine so it is functional and in running condition. Basic hand tools and equipment (supplied by HROT) must be utilized to complete this task. The contest will help develop the youngsters problemsolving, and communication skills, as well as increase self-esteem and the understanding of a working internal combustion engine.

The Midnight Rodders 2 Annu nd
Story & Photography by Marty Crain
Back in 1991 the Midnight Rodders Car Club held their first club event, Cruise-In at the Drive-In. At the time, we didn’t have Cruise In’s, in fact, most places were posting signs stating, No Cruising, we weren’t welcome, this was back before the Back Yard Burger, Chick-Fil-A, even the Sonic Burger’s didn’t want us. So, we went to Mr. Miller, owner of the Sumner County Drive-In and asked, what’s your slowest night? Can we possibly have a cruise in, a one price per car load deal, come in a couple of hours before the movie and request that everyone buy dinner and snacks from the concession stand, kick back and enjoy the movie? His response was, you guys can have the place on Thursday nights to do whatever you want!
The first event was in 1991 with a huge turnout, folks from the Corvette, Camaro and Mustang clubs supported us, Stones River Street Rods came all the way from Murfreesboro TN., The Mid-Tenn Classic Chevy club, (The original NSRA) Nashville Street . 18
ual “Cruise-In at the Drive-In” Rod Association and Shade Tree Street Rodders were all there. Talk about making the new club in town feel welcome! The following weeks and months we were being asked, “hey, when you guys gonna do that again”? So, the wheels were in motion, we decided, the only way to make it better for both us and Mr. Miller was to get more cars. At that time we didn’t have e-mail, Facebook or social media to help spread the word and only one “Oldies” radio station, yea,,, Radio. We went and asked if they would broadcast our event, they were quick to say, Oh Yea, and we’ll do one better if Mr. Miller will let us, a live remote, bring out the inflatable jukebox, Rocky Raccoon mascot, provide music until the movie starts with a live broadcast. WOW, talk about getting the word out, of course hearing them broadcast, “The Midnight Rodders Cruise In at the Drive-In was like hearing your first record being played on the radio! Inviting everyone to join in the fun with a roped off area for show cars and hot rods provided a great environment for a fun night at the Drive-In, for some, it was their very first trip to a Drive-In Movie, one child was overheard saying, “come on dad, hurry up so we can get a good seat”! The attendance doubled and so did the fun! Mr. Miller was ecstatic, largest crowd ever on a Thursday night, actually, at that time it was the largest crowd for any night in years. We would like to think this sparked the cruise-in movement in the
Nashville area, soon we were being asked to host cruise-in’s at burger and Bar-B-Q restaurants from Franklin to Donelson. Of course, that helped spread the word about the Midnight Rodders Fall Color Cruise, but that’s a story for another time, (I hope). Anyone reading that attended those early Cruise-In’s at the Drive-In please let us know, we would love to hear from you. Editors Note: Marty Crain is a hot rodding mainstay in the Nashville & Middle Tennessee area. He is one heckuva a hot rod historian for all hot rodders in the Mid-South region and beyond. Before there can be a winner, there must be contenders. The 2018 GNRS America’s Most Beautiful Roadster competition had a LOT of contenders. 16 roadsters attempted to qualify to compete for the coveted title of AMERICA’s MOST BEAUTIFUL ROADSTER, but after the 1st phase of judging, only 15 made the cut to chase the title in 2018.
As with any competition of this type and magnitude, opinions will vary on which car should be the winner. In our opinion, just making the cut of “CONTENDER” for the AMBR trophy, means you are a winner. We get it though, the BIG Trophy means you are #1 for the year and in a very select group of cars and car owners/builders. 26

We looked at them all from the spectator side of the stanchions, and did not envy the judges one bit. We had our favorites, more than just 1, just like most people did. At the end of the awards presentation on Sunday evening, the winner of the 69th Annual AMBR award was the David Martin 1931 Ford Model A Roadster. Congratulations to David and the team at Hot Rods & Hobbies on winning the 69th AMBR award. Some people on social media have questioned the choice of the judges, but then again it is easy to “arm chair” quarterback a decision, when you only look at it from the surface. We as spectators at the show, or checking out pic’s online, do not have all the info and knowledge about the cars to determine who should win or why a car was chosen. Just enjoy them all as they are all hot rods and cool cars. Last week we showed the AMBR winner and this week we are highlighting ALL of the 2018 CONTENDERS...enjoy.
