“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” when Dad’s are showing their young sons and daughters the cars.

What is it that lures us into this thing called hot rodding? Let me clarify for the sake of this piece, that hot rodding means all things hot rod, muscle car, restorations, originals, race cars of all kinds, etc. You see what I mean. I have one more than 1 occasion, referred to hot rodding as the disease for which there is no cure. No matter what, when you think you want out or maybe even get out, you end up back in it in some way shape or form. Very few of us ever leave hot rodding. Think I am kidding or joking...take a look at most of the events you go to. There are a whole lot of gray haired guys (women don’t do gray) at the events. That’s a pretty plain visual way to see what I am talking about. While I was at the recent Birmingham World of Wheels show, as I do at many events, I sat down in a busy area and watched people. People watching is the number one sport to me. Nothing more funny than all of us, and before you send hate mail, I raise my hand first on that. I am sure I have made many people laugh. I am always amazed at the number of people who come to events like World of Wheels and others,

both indoor and outdoor. People supporting our hobby and addictions with their hard earned money and wages. Some of the best things I watch and observe, is when Dad’s are showing their young sons and daughters the cars. Many of them take the time to explain to them about the cars and what they are seeing. This is cool as the kids then get to see things thru their dads eyes, instead of just seeing some bright and colorful cars and not know anything about them. Then the real magic happens. Dad and the kids walk by the vendors selling HOT WHEELS!! At that point it’s all over, in a couple of ways. First dad is digging into his wallet to buy some of those cars for his kids. The second thing that happens is what I referred to earlier…”THE LURE”. Those little cars become an obsession which leads to the BIG CAR obsession in not too long a time. Think not? How many of you have at least 1 HOT WHEELS car today? Let’s just say that I have more than one...see what I mean...GOTCHA!!

“the fun starts here”….

Another New Gearhead TV Show?? While we were at the GNRS 2018 event last month, we checked out the filming of what is apparently a new “gearhead” type television show. The filming was taking place right on the fairgrounds near Bldg 4. If we are to understand it correctly, this new show supposedly called “CHOP SWAP SHOP” will be available on NETFLIX at sometime in the future. When we talked to folks involved in the filming, they would not give us any timeframe of when the show would be available. Based on hearing the discussion between the actors on site, it appears as 2 of the guys have some type of “car type” business and the car hauler in the pictures here. The other actor apparently owns the Lincoln Futura (think George Barris and BATMOBILE) and is needing work completed on it. We can tell you, both of the vehicles ran and drove on their own, as we watched while they tried to load the Lincoln on the ramp truck. If we hear any more on this show we will be sure to share it with you as soon as we get info. 6

Specialty Vehicle Engineering has made its new 2018 YENKO/SC Stage II Camaro available at Chevrolet dealerships. The car is powered by a custom built 1,000-horsepower 416 C.I.D. (6.8L) supercharged LT-1-based engine. Only 25 of these Limited Edition YENKO/SC Stage II cars will be built, and all will be based off the 2018 Camaro SS 1LE to take advantage of all the great performance features the 1LE offers, and properly balance the awesome power of the 1,000-horsepower supercharged engine. Features of the car include Magnetic Ride Control, Electronic Limited-Slip Differential, Performance-Tuned suspension with unique bushings, springs and stabilizer bars, and a heavy-duty cooling system with engine oil cooler, dual outboard radiators, transmission cooler and rear differential cooler. The YENKO/SC Stage II Camaro also includes Brembo Brakes with six-piston front calipers and 14.5-inch rotors, and four-piston rear calipers with 13.3-inch rotors, giving it precise braking, while resisting fade, according to the company. The 1LE front splitter and rear spoiler increase down force to keep the YENKO/ SC Stage II firmly planted at speed, while the Recaro Performance Seats keep the passengers planted in position. The 20-inch Torque Thrust wheels are all reminiscent of the original YENKO/SC cars. Each of these 25 vehicles will be numbered, and include a manufacturer's certificate of origin.

Story by Jimmy B / Photography by Michael Corazzelli

Just like this vintage post card we found, the California Hot Rod Reunion is all about all things vintage drag racing. The 26th Edition of the California Hot Rod Reunion (They were only going to do 1!) took place once again at Famoso Raceway. Famoso is all things vintage also, and a perfect setting for this event. After some controversy with the 2016 event, and how some aspects were run and handled, NHRA made the decision to return to the program format that had worked so well for the previous 24 years at the 2017 event., Based on the lack of “noise on social media outlets, the decision must have been the right one from the fans perspective and as important if not more, the racers perspective. Really after 25 years of holding the event, there is not a lot that is new, and that’s ok. A proven format is a good thing. The event features all those cool pre-72 drag cars that we gearheads have come to love. Three days of nostalgia drag 20

racing is a good thing. Add in the “CACKLEFEST on Saturday night with push starts just like the early days of drag racing and you will get “goosebumps” watching those nitro burning cars coming at you. The racing is not just an exhibition deal, but a points met for the Heritage Series, so bragging rights are on the line. AA/FC Funny Cars and AA/FD front engine fuel dragsters putting on a helluva show while racing for points….can’t beat that! Even more nitro fun is had with the AA/ FA Fuel Altered racing organized by Ron Hope of the AA/FA RAT TRAP Racing team. Multiple fuel altered squaring off against each other and doing the “nitro dance” down the strip trying to keep as much of a straight course as possible in one of those cars. We can’t forget the swap meet down in the back of the pit area (always some cool stuff there) and of course the hot rods and customs that fill up “The Grove” area of Famoso and down at the finish line along the fence. All of this and more makes this event a must see and do, whether you have been before or it’s your first time. The event is managed and run under the NHRA Motorsports Museum banner of the NHRA organization to help raise fun to preserve Drag Racing History.
