“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
“Maybe I am just stuck in 20 years ago…” It’s time to open up another can of worms. Feel free to send any hate mail or support mail if you so want to and feel the need to….HA! Last Sunday was the kickoff of the 2018 NASCAR season. All the fun and festivities were down in Daytona as they have been for forever. I will admit I watched the last 20 laps or so of the race to see how it would end up. The rest of the race...couldn't tell what happened unless I read it on line or in a newspaper. A lot of people got super excited when Austin Dillion won the race in the #3 car. Congratulations to him as winning one of these races is tough, let alone the DAYTONA 500! There was a lot of comparisons about the #3 of Dillion and the #3 of Dale Earnhardt Sr. More talk and hyper-bole about how it was 20 years since Dale Sr won his only DAYTONA 500 before his untimely death. You have the # 3 car, Richard Childress is Austin’s granddad, Richard was Dale’s team owner and friend (very good friend) and the picture of Austin in Victory Lane when Dale Sr won the DAYTONA 500. SORRY...it ain’t the same or even close in my opinion! Again I am not taking anything away from Austin Dillion. He made a move and won and good for him.
Austin is no Dale Sr though! The race cars in NASCAR today are almost identical except for the vinyl wrap on the outside telling you what brand they are supposed to be. The shapes are all the same. Motors are different based on the brand on the vinyl wrap on the hood. The cars have no character or definition. Maybe I am just stuck in 20 years ago. Back then the race was run for 500 straight laps...no breaks or segments in it. Your car/engine had to hold up to the stress of constant running at the upper end of the RPM range. The cars looked like what the dealers had on their lots, not an aerodynamic egg. If you like the format and type of NASCAR racing that happens today, that is great. Enjoy it! When you watch the DAYTONA 500 on TV, in the last 20 laps of a tight race, and you see all the empty seats, there is a message there. Hard core racing fans who spend hard earned $$ to go to a race, don’t leave in the last 20 laps of the race, especially the DAYTONA 500. Maybe it’s time for a return to what I call real stock car racing...what do you think?
