“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” “have hot rod fun everyday” Gearheads...go out and have some car fun today! Do something gearhead related everyday, and you will feel better because of it.
tomorrow you will have some awesome memories. Some years back, I experienced a life altering event for myself. No need to go into the specifics, but it was a HUGE eye opening event for me. While laying in that hospital bed, a friend visited me. He shared this thought, that is true for everyone of us. He said...”Jim, you don’t control when you’re born or when you die, so you better make everyday count as it could be your last”. I think about that a lot everyday.
I say this to you, as we are saddened by the recent passing last week of hot rod icon and hero, Pete Chapouris. Pete was not old at 73. Some of our younger gearheads may think otherwise, as many of us did years ago. As age creeps up on all of us, and it will hit you younger folks too, 73 doesn't look old yet. Elsewhere in this issue, we have a recognition for Pete, so I wont go into that here. The fact is though, Pete did had a full life with his family and his passion...hot rods.
Like all of you, my passion, my love is hot rods (insert what you like here). I say hot rods but I like our whole hobby and all the variety we have. I make it a point to do something fun, from a gearhead perspective each day, and I actually try to pack the day as full as I can. So much to see, experience and enjoy. I used to put off going to events I wanted to go to but found a reason to not go and complain. Now I make it happen as much as possible and I am having a ball. Don’t say you can’t, you can if you really want.
That’s the point I am trying to make here. Go have hot rod fun everyday. It doesn’t have to be a big hot rod trip, or cause you to spend vast sums of hard earned money to have gearhead fun. It’s as simple as taking your cool car for a drive or maybe just going out to the shop to wipe it down. Make your day count. Do that today and
Jimmy B.
“the fun starts here”….
Choice is yours...I am choosing FUN! 4

Road Rumblings….
As many of you have already heard, Hot Rod Hero and all around cool guy, Pete Chapouris passed away on January 6th. Pete was stricken with a stroke the night before and succumbed to that stroke. On January 6th, the hot rod world lost another good guy!
Martin Sheen & Pete Chapouris on right on the set.
We met Pete a couple times on our excursions out west for hot rod fun. Just said hi and shook his hand. Pete was always ready to greet you. Many others were closer friends and more, and in their own way, no doubt will share their memories of this hot rod hero.
time HOT ROD & ROD & CUSTOM Magazine guy, knew about Pete too. Gray also knew about Jim Jacobs, who built an iconic 1934 Ford Coupe too. Gray actually brought Pete & Jake together for the now famous Cover shot on Rod & Custom Magazine...the Chicken Coupe Cover.
Pete spent the last 50 years plus building and being around hot rods. Whether his own or building an AMBR winner for a customer or just doing some bit of work for someone else, Pete was involved. Pete was a California guy, growing up in El Monte in So Cal. He played on the streets of California, stating with that first hot rod, a Model A Coupe on Deuce Rails. Seems as everybody knows about the “California Kid”, Pete’s 1934 Ford Coupe. Black, Flamed and just oozing hot rod. Hollywood liked it so much they made a movie about it. Gray Baskerville, long 6
More importantly Gray brought the Pete & Jake together and out of that was born a friendship and a business called PETE & JAKES HOT ROD PARTS.
Winner in the first ever HOT ROD CLASS there with the restoration of the Doane Spencer Roadster.
Doane Spencer Roadster at Pebble Beach Original Logo Artwork for Pete & Jakes
With So-Cal Speed Shop, Pete also got involved in Bonneville Racing with General Motors Performance group.
Hot Rodding changed for the better because of this. This thing called PETE & JAKES, helped start many a hot rod business over the years After PETE & JAKES was sold to the Slover Family in Peculiar Missouri, Pete started another adventure...the PC3 Group. Building more cool stuff. The one that Pete had the most fun with, in our opinion, is the re-birth of the SoCal Speed Shop. He partnered with Alex Xydias, the original founder of the SoCal Speed Shop back after the war in the late ‘40’s, and brought SCSS back to life, in a huge way. Between P&J’s and So-Cal Speed Shop, Pete worked for SEMA, started the SREA (now known as the HRIA Hot Rod Industry Alliance), became a Pebble Beach 7
We would be re-miss if we did not mention that Pete was a teacher too. During his hot rod career, Pete touched a lot of lives. People working in the shops he had. Especially at So-Cal this is true. Guys like Jimmy Shine, Tony Thacker, Ryan Reed and many more got the best hot rod teaching and education that no money could buy from any school. To us and others, this is where Pete shined. Losing our hot rod hero’s and icons hurts. Even if we did not personally know them, it hurts. With Pete’s passing, the George Jones song comes to mind….”Who’s going to fill their shoes?” Godspeed Pete…
Join with us please in keeping Pete’s wife, family and all his friends in your thoughts and prayers at this most difficult of times for them. 8

Simply…...DE
Story & Photo
If it’s the last weekend in February, that means some different things in Detroit. The Red Wings Hockey team is in action...it’s cold and maybe even snowing...and it’s time for one of the greatest car shows on the planet...The DETROIT AUTORAMA. For the 64th year in a row, hot rods, custom cars, race cars, rat rods and more filled COBO Hall from wall to wall.
One thing I that is pure Detroit, is the Muscle Cars that are on display in the show. Out of all the shows we attend during indoor shows, Detroit far and away has the most Muscle Cars on the floor. It is great seeing all that American Iron from when factory muscle was originally great. We say originally, because there are many displays of current muscle cars from GM, Dodge and Ford on display also.
The Autorama is one of those iconic events where long distance and long time friends meet at Autorama for a weekend of gearhead fun. The show is definitely on our MUST DO list each year.
As we said earlier the show has many different facets that make it up, much like a precious gemstone that has been cut. Out in front is the RIDLER award. Each year the best of the best are in Detroit to show their automotive works of art for the 1st time anywhere. Just making the GREAT 8, and be in contention for the RIDLER is achievement in itself.
.
Plenty of cool hot rods are spread all over the show floor. Name your favorite and you’re going to see it there. 22
ETROIT
o’s—Jimmy B
In the home turf of the Alexander Bros, Custom Cars play a big role at Autorrama. There is always a great set up with customs parked together for all to see and enjoy. They even bring out some of the “Big 3” concept custom cars too. Motorcycles...yep they are here too! Add in vendors, the Charity Auction on Saturday, the Ridlers Ball and you can see why its hard to see the whole thing in one day.

Simply…...DETROIT
One of the biggest and best features of the Autorama for us and many others is AUTORAMA EXTREME, or “the Basement” as many refer to it. With good reason too, as it all takes place downstairs on the lower level of Cobo Hall. This is where the vintage, traditional hot rods and customs are at. Add in some Rat Rods for fun and it is one big party. Faded paint and patina abound. Rockabilly music playing from wall to wall. How can you NOT have a great time here. If you have never been to this show...GO. Don’t put it on your bucket list, rather make plans and go. After you have attended, you’ll understand why many gearheads who go every year refer to it as Simply DETROIT 24
