“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” “It’s Like A Car Carnival”

As you open this up we have headed out to the west coast. The next stop on our 2017 Winter Road Tour.

The GNRS is what brings us all together this time of year. It brings a LOT of hot rodders to Southern California! Hot rodders come from all over the globe to be part of the GNRS. It has that kind of drawing power. It’s not just the roadsters vying for the AMBR trophy that brings us to So-Cal, it’s the whole event all weekend long. As our good friend Larry dubbed it…”It’s like a “Car Carnival”! So much going on all weekend long.

It’s Grand National Roadster Show time again...and we can’t wait. One of the best parts about this trip is traveling with great friends and spending a long (4 day) weekend with them having nothing but gearhead fun. The other part that is great, is meeting up with like minded friends we have made over the years, going out to the GNRS and other events in California. As we have said, like many others, the cars are just pieces of steel and the people are what make them special.

If you’re on Facebook or Instagram or check us out over the weekend starting Thursday as we will be posting lots of pics from the show all weekend long.

Jimmy B.

Road Rumblings…. We got this in our email box from Danny Thompson...we’re glad to hear this!

SEMA Now Accepting Scholarship Applications SEMA is now accepting applications from students preparing for careers in the auto or auto-parts industries for the 2017 SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Challenger 2 Will Run in 2017

The SEMA Memorial Scholarship program offers financial assistance of up to $5,000 to help foster the next generation of automotive aftermarket industry leaders and innovators. Students can apply at www.sema.org/scholarships.

I'll get right to it--the Challenger 2 will return to Bonneville in 2017. The team and I will be running Speed Week (August 1218th) and Cook’s FIA Shootout (September 20-24th). As many of you know, I had planned to retire the car after the 2016 season. That was probably the right decision, but after capturing the SCTA AA/FS record at 406.7mph, the team and I thought ending things now would mean leaving too much of the car’s potential on the table. So we’re going to give it one more try in 2017 before packing things up for good. If you'd like to read more about our plans, as well as an analysis of what went wrong during last year's FIA event.

The deadline for the program is March 1. Scholarships are available in a variety of categories, including technical and business disciplines. Dozens of awards ranging from $2,000 to $3,000 will be given out, with a $5,000 award going to the top student. The program also includes a loanforgiveness aspect that offers financial awards to employees of SEMA-member companies who have completed and are paying off a loan for a program of study at an accredited university, college or vocational/technical program within the U.S. For more information on the program, contact Juliet Marshall, SEMA manager of education projects, at 909-978-6655 or julietm@sema.org.

KOUL TOOL”s Builders Tip Over the years I’ve done my share of AN hose assembly projects. These jobs can be a piece of cake or a major pain in the neck. As most of you know already, the biggest hurdle to cross is inserting the hose into the socket. If you don’t get a clean cut on your braided stainless steel hose it can be a nightmare getting it into the fitting. That’s why I invented the AN Hose Assembly Tool to funnel the frayed ends into the nut.

Will Trump Save the Salt Flats? UPDATE By the time land speed racers got the legislation details into the hands of lawmakers in Washington DC the contentious election cycle was so upended it prevented any meaningful work getting done before the new administration. A lobbyist has been hired and new strategy has been embraced. Salt Lake City Tribune writer Emma Penrod published another report on the continuing saga of the land speed racing community's efforts to ignite restorative actions to the beleaguered Bonneville Salt Flats. Read the full report here: http:// www.sltrib.com/home/4773483-155/whocan-save-the-Bonneville-salt For those who think Save the Salt is out-of -line for heaping big blame on the BLM, please read this fact-loaded, science-heavy letter to then Secretary of the Interior Stuart Udall, penned in 1961 by CAR&DRIVER auto writer Griff Borgeson. We can't make this stuff up. Griff's respectful appeal: http://savethesalt.org/wp-content/ uploads/2016/11/udallpg1547.pdf

Once you get the hose into the socket and installed all the way to the threads most of the ugly stuff is behind you. However, there is one more potential obstacle that can be just as frustrating. When you go to screw the fitting into the nut, the AN hose can push out of the end you just installed it into. Recently, I discovered a way to clamp braided stainless steel hose with AN vise jaw inserts. Place the inserts so that they are sticking half way out of the vise. As you can see in the photo, both the fitting and the hose are secured tightly. You probably don’t need to mark the hose anymore, but it’s never a bad idea just to be safe. ( Owner of KOUL TOOLS & Article by Dick Raczuk. www.koultools.com )

Save the Salt reminds everyone that we are not a special interest group with selfish ideals. This effort is meant to restore an American treasure that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Land Speed Racing is only one of many user groups adversely affected by the steady salt crust decline. 7

Story by Jimmy B—Pics by Contest Entrants

Back in the beginning of November 2016, we sat around the office and came up with the idea of having a cover contest for our readers. This sprang up as we talked about all the nice photos out there on Facebook, Instagram and other social media sites.

We posted the flyer/ad announcing the contest and didn't know what to expect. To say the least we were pleasantly surprised in a great way with the number of entries we got for our first cover contest.

We threw a few rules/guidelines together, cause you have to have them to keep things straight, or so we're told. We didn't want to complicate things, but keep things on the up and up.

15

Quite honestly, it was hard for the judging panel to narrow the field down from so many cool entries, to 3 winners. A lot of agonizing later and we have showcased our 3 winners on the covers of the Gearhead Gazzette over the past 2 weeks and then on this weeks issue for the first place winner.

Thank you to everyone who entered the contest. You submitted some cool shots! We’re sharing most of them here ( some entered multiple shots of the same vehicle) so all our readers can see the shots that were submitted, and give all of our entries a little bit of recognition too.

16

We are going to do a 2nd Annual Cover Contest later this year again. Keep that in mind as you take those photo’s. Frame them for a vertical format. We hope you make it even tougher to choose a winner later this year. CHEERS! 17

Story & Photo’s by Jimmy B

While the glitz and glam is taking place upstairs at the DETROIT AUTORAMA, one level down...in the Basement as its referred to by many, the AUTORAMA EXTREME as its officially known, is rockin’ ‘n rollin’ all weekend long. Some would tell you, including some of the biggest name builders in the hot rod biz, that the best part of the Autorama is the fun taking place downstairs. We would echo that feeling too! Traditional hot rods, traditional customs, rat rods, vintage drag cars, rock-abilly music from wall to wall and a whole lot more that’s hip and happenin’.

It’s a trip back, some would say to a time when hot rodding was pure and simpler. The great thing is, the guys and gals who are showing cars, staffing vendor booths, playing music or just hanging out all weekend, live this everyday. They are having FUN! 22

Very few cars have any stanchions or barriers around them, but the show goers respect the cars while still checking them out. While someone taking the ride down the escalator for the first time to check out this part of the Autorama, might not see it as a car show, it still is. No wall plaques or Trophy shop awards for the winners here...no no no! All of the awards given out are hand made. Some that are given out, come from some of the high end builders showing a great 8 car competing for the RIDLER Award upstairs! “The BASEMENT” is our 2nd stop when we are in town for the Autorama. The only reason it’s number 2, is you have to work your way across the main floor to get to the escalator downstairs . If you didn't have to do that, it would be the #1 stop for us . Make your plans to be art of the fun in 2017 as it will all be going down, in the Basement the last weekend in February. We’ll see all you cool cats & chicks there. 23
