“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

“Yea I just hit a nerve with that one!” rare car that fits into “COLLECTOR” status. Hard or next to impossible to replace. Difficult to re-build in some cases too. If you have a 1 of 1 or 1 of 10 you are in that rare group. I have to tell you though that even those folks DRIVE THEIR CARS. Look at the PEBBLE BEACH Concours event in August each year. Extra points are garnered by DRIVING YOU CAR on the 100 mile route they set up. If they can do it, you can too. Around here ( at the Gearhead Gazzette) we like driving our hot rod and we would like to see more folks break those cool rides out of the garage and drive them. So what if it gets wet because a surprise rain happens. You clean the car up, as you will anyway. Now having said all of this, we’re going to be inviting all the gearheads that are in the Middle Tennessee to a driving event we are planning. Actually if it works out and the participation is good, multiple events. A low key, nothing but fun. DRIVING EVENT. We’ll have more info and a flyer very soon so stay tuned to the Gearhead Gazzette. The only requirement will be a full tank of gas and a smile. Go get that cool car out of the garage...

I am going to wade on into this one…. Did you drive your cool car today? If you answered no, why not? Did you drive you cool car last weekend? Again...if no why not?? There are many reasons for not driving your cool car, and some of them are very valid in our opinion. Family events, family issues, things like those that do get in the way of gearheads having fun. You may be working on your cool ride to finish building it, or rebuilding it, or maybe doing some extensive maintenance on it. These too are legit reasons to not being behind the wheel of that awesome ride you have. Let me confess on myself. I did not drive my hot rod today or last weekend either. Weather was the issue last weekend and today, well the parking lot at work has some folks who don’t appreciate a cool hot rod. I will add though, I do strive to drive the ‘32 a lot! Some weeks are better than others. Do you just leave your cool car in the garage all the time? Why? Don’t you like driving it? Are you running a museum with one car in it? Yea I just hit a nerve with that one! I know that some of you have a very

GETS SNAKE BIT!! The Dodge Viper super car, loved by enthusi- Viper 1:28 Edition ACR: Production will be asts and collectors, will die again at the end limited to 28 cars. of the 2017 model year but it will go out in style. Viper GTS-R Commemorative Edition ACR: Production will be limited to 100 cars. The decision, while highly anticipated, was still heart breaking for Viper nation. Viper VoooDoo II Edition ACR: Production will be limited to 31 cars. FCA said it will continue building them into next year until the model year runs its Viper Snakeskin Edition GTC: Production course. will be limited to 25 cars. “To me, it’s a great loss to terminate the Viper. It’s always been the symbol for the U.S. car guys," Bill White, president of Viper Club of America told the Free Press.

Dodge Dealer Edition ACR: This version is only available through Dodge’s highest sales volume Viper dealers, Tomball Dodge of Tomball, Texas, and Roanoke Dodge of Roanoke, Ill.

"Even though we knew it was coming, I was so not ready for this," a member of the Viper Owners Association said in a post on the organization's Facebook page.

The fifth-generation “Snake” has an 8.4-liter V -10 engine delivering 645 horsepower and 600 foot-pounds of torque. The company offered six special-edition models to commemorate the car’s final year and 25th anniversary.

The Viper, with its dramatic, curvy styling has always been a much bigger deal than its modest sales volumes. Powered by a 8.4liter, V10 engine that produces 645 horsepower, the low-slung coupe has had a reputation for being difficult to control on the road throughout its 25-year history.

The handcrafted sports car starts at about $90,000 and Fiat Chrysler says there are still some of the cars in dealer stock. More than 30,000 Vipers have been built in Detroit since its debut. They were built at the Mack Avenue Assembly Plant from 19921994, and at Conner Avenue Assembly Plant since 1995.

"A Viper owner is a very unique individual," said White, who lives in Warren, Ohio. "You are basically, handling a very highpowered car, and they can get away from you. We call it snake bite." After several years of disappointing sales Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said Tuesday it will offer five limited-edition models to commemorate the final year of production and celebrate its 25th anniversary of the Viper. Each model will be inspired by historic Vipers from the past and produced in very small numbers.

Altogether, the company made more than 25,400 Vipers at the plant from 1992 through 2016. The vehicle hits the end of the road on its 25th anniversary. “To me, it’s a great loss to terminate the Viper. It’s always been the symbol for the U.S. car guys," Bill White, president of Viper Club of America said. 6

Inferno Camaro Wins Goodg the Year at the 20th PPG Known for consistently pushing the boundaries of automotive design and performance, Roadster Shop raised the bar yet again with a screaming yellow ’69 Camaro. Named “Inferno” Camaro, the car took home the Goodguys 2017 PPG Street Machine of the Year award last night on the big stage in Columbus, Ohio for owners John & Nicki Wilkus of Lakeville, Minnesota. A multi-year build at Roadster Shop’s Mundelein, Illinois headquarters, Inferno showcases metal mastery while staying true to the classic lines of a ’69 Camaro. The first-gen street fighter features a hand-formed hood, firewall, dash, cowl, and rear spoiler as well as recessed grooves on the rear roof line which flow into the back glass. Under the reshaped hood and nestled into a masterfully crafted engine bay rests a naturally aspirated GM LT1 prepped by Texas Speed good for 680 crank horsepower. Handling is spot on with a Roadster Shop Fast Track chassis, and one off Greening Auto Company center lock wheels. Inside the cockpit is a masterful leather interior by Jeremy Carlson’s Avant Garde Design that includes a bucket full of house-machined Roadster Shop parts and trim pieces. Every interior panel flows seamlessly into the next. Refined, rowdy and downright sinister, Inferno turned in a hot lap of 36.995 on the AutoCross track during the Goodguys 20th PPG Nationals weekend which was the second fastest lap of the competition. Award criteria mandates all Street Machine of the Year contestants make a run through the cones. After it was announced “Inferno” had won, Roadster Shop’s Phil & Jeremy Gerber thanked their talented team. “We have an amazing group of guys sitting out there in the crowd. Without them this wouldn’t be possible.” The win marked the third time Roadster Shop has built a Street Machine of the Year Winner. They won the prestigious award in 2009 with Barry Blonquist’s “C1RS” ’62 Corvette and again in 2011 with Alex Covington’s “Innovator” ’67 Nova. (Article by Betsy Bennett /Photo’s Jeremy Cliff) 24

GPT ’32 Ford Sedan Wins at the Goodguys 20th PPG George Poteet’s GTP ’32 Ford Tudor, built by Alan Johnson and his team at Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop won Goodguys 2017 Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year last weekend in Columbus, Ohio. The sleek, sinister and slippery sedan gave Poteet his second Goodguys Street Rod of the Year title. George Poteet is no stranger to game-changing, ground-breaking hot rods, customs and muscle cars. As the hot rod hobby’s most notable patron, he regularly works with the best builders in the country, often simultaneously. He’s had several Deuces built through the years and called on Alan Johnson to craft his latest – a black, bad-to-the-bone sedan. As with anything built by Johnson and his team, this one is not nearly as simple as it looks. Nearly every aspect of the car – from the overall shape to many small details – was done with purposeful design, with input coming from artists Eric Black, Eric Brockmeyer and Jimmy Smith. The chassis sports plenty of subtle tricks, including frame rails that are sectioned slightly, making the body look almost channeled. Johnson whittled a custom set of wishbone-style radius rods for the front and rear, along with a custom chromoly 5-inch dropped front axle. Johnson’s Kinmont-style disc brakes were used fore and aft, with a Winters quick-change rearend. It all rolls on 16and 18-inch magnesium wheels (one of 12 sets made by Real Rodders Wheels a few years back) wrapped in Firestone rubber from Coker. A build of this magnitude deserved a special engine, so Keith Dorton at Automotive Specialties Racing Engines was commissioned to build a 312c.i. Y-block Ford producing more than 450 horsepower. In addition to stout, fresh internals, the vintage Ford mill was exquisitely detailed, dressed in custom valve covers and fitted with a custom Hilborn fuel injection system. Study the images of the engine and you’ll find countless custom touches and one-off pieces, plus plenty of brightwork from Jon Wright’s Custom Chrome. 40

Street Rod of the Year G Nationals in Columbus Bowler Transmissions built the Tremec 5-speed transmission that backs it. How do you give a Deuce sedan such a slick silhouette? For the GTP ’32, Johnson chopped the top with a slight taper – 3-inches in the A-pillar and 2-inches in the rear – along with narrowed B-pillars. He also raised the rear wheel openings 3-inches, rearched them, rotated them forward, and then reshaped the inner tubs to better hug the Firestones. The custom hood has long louvers on both the sides and tops, which match the louvers underneath and elsewhere on the car. There are almost too many modifications and custom touches to list, from the hand -built door hinges to the contoured rear spreader bar and early VW taillights tucked up under the rear. All the sheet metal is covered in a flawless PPG black finish. The custom metalwork continued inside, where a complete steel surround was hand formed and structurally welded to the inside of the body. The floor was constructed of highdensity aircraft-quality plywood – 282 pieces individually laser-cut pieces assembled into six panels, which were then sanded smooth and stained for a rich, exquisite appearance. A pair of ’32 seat backs was stitched in-house at JHRS in a combination of leathers, while custom gauges from Classic Instruments were crafted to resemble watch faces. A JHRS Modern Vintage Wheel and Hole Shot shifter are just a couple of the fine finishing touches – to describe them all would take an entire book. It’s lean. It’s clean. And it’s mean. Poteet’s sedan is another knockout that exemplifies how our industry’s top builders continue to redefine the Deuce, and refine the street rod as we know it. Congratulations to George Poteet, Alan Johnson and everyone involved in the GTP ’32 for creating a car truly befitting the Goodguys 2017 Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year title. 41
