“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” “There will always be “gray hairs” in our hobby”

What are you doing to grow this thing called “hot rodding”? Whenever I say “hot rodding” it includes all forms of motorsports. It’s not just limited to pre-’48 Hot Rods as some think it’s what I mean. Hot rods, cool customs, trick trucks, classics, original/restored and you get what I mean. Back to what are you doing to grow hot rodding? How are you getting young people involved? If you’re not….YOU NEED TO!

Just like a ball team has minor league teams, that pull from college teams, that pull from high school teams that pull from Little League teams, so must we have a “entry level team too. One way of doing this, is get kids involved in building models. What better way to get to understand how a car goes together or what its made up of, in a simple form. My guess is, most of you out there have built a model or two some years ago and I know more than a few that still build them.

If you pay attention, and I know you do, at local shows or big multi-day events, we see a lot of “grayer” hair and beards too. Us “gray hairs” are the base of hot rodding today. There will always be “gray hairs” in our hobby, it’s only natural. The thing we see less of is younger under 30 folks participating with us. In my opinion this must change or we will lose what we love.

If you are in a car club, why not host a Model Car Contest in your town. Easy to do, only has to be a 1/2 to whole day at the most. Have some off your club members cars outside for kids to check out. You’ll build interest, and with some nurturing and encouragement...some new hot rodders will be out there.

well as from countries abroad also coming in to donate time and talent for the auction. There are artists that can’t be at the event who create and donate work for the auction too. Add in donations from companies like 1-Shot, Tub O’ Towels, Lucas Oil, POR-15, RacingJunk.comClassifieds and more, that provide very nice items for the auction and you get the picture.

Story by Jimmy B / Pic’s by Big Al Liebmann

As we have talked about on different occasions, hot rodders, gearheads and car lovers are very giving and caring people. Those sometimes tough exteriors and persona’s of some of us, really have a HUGE heart inside. Every year, over the past many years, an event within the SYRACUSE NATIONALS event has taken place to raise money for charity. Specifically for the Ronald McDonald House of Central New York. 2017 was no different other than more money being collected!

One of the big draws all weekend is GASOLINE Alley. Gasoline Alley brings together at least 40 nostalgic race cars including dragsters, gassers, super stocks, funny cars, oval track, and sports cars. In 2015, Artie enlisted “Dino” Lawrence to coordinate the Nostalgia Race Car Exhibit. Dino is a lettering artist & pinstriper, and like Artie, has a long history of motorsports experience.

ARTIE’s Party is the event put together by Art Schilling A.K.A. “East Coast Artie”. It’s his baby and his passion. Artie does help with many other charity events, but every July Arties Party is the biggie for him. Artie’s party is a huge pinstriping panel jam, with artists from all over the USA as 24

One of the coolest deals in Gasoline Alley, is the FRANTIC FORD MUSTANG and SUPER CAMARO Funny cars doing “

Nitro Cackle” sessions during the weekend. These are not just ordinary cackle’s. Seat time during the cackle’s are bid on with the high bidder earning the right to be in the seat! Talk about cool! $5000.00 was raised and ALL of it donated to Artie’s Party for RMH of CNY.

Congratulations to Art Schilling, Dino Lawrence, The FRANTIC FORD Team (Rocky Pirrone, Al Liebmann, Joshua Ryan, Bobby Frey, Rick Noonan, Nicholas R Carrita and Tom Buonocore) all the artists and especially everyone who bid one and won some bitchin’ art and swag to support Ronald McDonald House of Central New York. Due to these efforts, $67,000.00 was raised in 2017!!! WONDERFUL! Some very big hearts right here!
