“if it isn't fun, we ain’t doing it!” They say that the true measure of a man, is not by wealth or property, but by the number of people who call him friend.

He was a hands on guy when it came to his love of cars...all cars.

Tom Akers was a very rich man!

Tom also started an indoor show called the KRIS KRINGLE INVITATIONAL Car Show held each November in conjunction with a Christmas Craft Bazar. He said why not! Let’s have fun with the whole family! Again, that’s the kind of guy he was.

I say was, as Tom left this world on June 15, 2017 after a courageous but short battle with cancer. Cancer took another of the good guys. Tom was a true “car guy”! From the first time that I met him back in the early ‘90’s, I could tell that he had the fever bad. Not only did he have it, he tried to give it to everyone he came across.

Tom was involved in other events too and if he was involved, they would be done right or not at all. His main goal always was the gearheads and making sure they had fun at any event he was involved in. His motto was, if it isn't fun, we ain’t doing it!

To prove my point, Tom’s email address is carsrfun@hotmail.com. Kind of says it all right there.

Tom was a successful businessman too. Most importantly to Tom though, was his family. Wife Betty of 42 years and sons Wayne & Tim and their families too.

I met Tom when I moved south to Middle Tennessee 27 plus years ago. I went to the BELLEVUE CRUISE-IN on a Saturday Night. The BELLEVUE CRUISE was the only real “cruise-in” in the Middle TN area at the time, and actually held spur the many others we now enjoy.

Tom will be missed by the Middle Tennessee car community. He did so much behind the scenes for all of us. I miss my friend Tom.

When I met Tom, he welcomed me with open arms. That’s the kind of guy he was.

As George Jones sings, “who’s gonna fill their shoes”...these are some big ones to try and fill….

Tom helped start the BELLEVUE CRUISERS Car Club. Later on in life he started and was President of the MUSIC CITY AACA

Axalta Coating Systems has partnered with Ray Evernham to display the 1958 Chevrolet Impala from the movie American Graffiti at select automotive shows this summer.

preserve the car and restore it to the exact specifications as it appeared in the film. When it came time to restore the finish of the Impala, Evernham turned to Axalta. With the help of Axalta’s color experts and Cromax refinish products, the vehicle’s finish was completely restored to its original paint scheme, including the iconic hand-painted red striping.

The Impala is currently featured in Axalta’s exhibit space. It was at the June 15 -17 NHRA Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Its next stop will be July 7-9 at Goodguys Columbus in Columbus, Ohio, and then Aug. 3-6 at NSRA Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky.

“The paint was more than 40 years old and hadn’t been maintained. If it was left unprotected for much longer, the car would have just been bare metal,” Evernham said. “My longstanding relationship with Axalta allowed me to call on the industry’s best paint experts to evaluate the car, get recommendations and subsequently, restore a vehicle that was originally coated in obsolete lacquer material. Axalta’s color match ability played a primary role in making the car look just as it did in the movie.”

For Evernham— a threetime NASCAR Cup champion crew chief and 2018 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee— ’58 Impala and the movie, American Graffiti, inspired his life-long passion for American car culture. After pursuing this iconic car for most of his adult life, Evernham finally acquired it from the gentleman who purchased the car directly from Lucasfilm after the movie was produced in 1972. Upon arriving at his shop, it was clear the car needed work to protect it from deteriorating. 6

The National Hot Rod Association revealed its 2018 Mello Mello Drag Racing Series schedule, which will once again feature 24 races from coast-to-coast, all broadcast exclusively on FOX Sports and the FOX national network. As is tradition, the season will again begin and end at the Auto Club Dragway in Pomona, California, and while much of the schedule mirrors that of the current 2017 calendar, some jockeying has taken place during the early summer months.

Somerset Mall and Walmart of Somerset have joined together to present the Friday Night Thunder Block Party as the kickoff for every Somernites Cruise Weekend!

The annual Route 66 Nationals in Joliet, Illinois, which currently takes place in early July, has shifted up in the schedule to the weekend of May 31- June 3. Likewise, the New England Nationals in Epping, New Hampshire, will take the place of Chicago event on July 6-8. The Englishtown, Bristol, and Norwalk events will maintain their place on the schedule before the series shifts to Epping and then on to the traditional Western Swing races in Denver, Seattle, and Sonoma, Calif.

This event has been growing each month and now averages over 500 hotrods! Live music, contests, great food and more await you at Friday Night Thunder! The event is held at the rear of Somerset Mall property located at stoplight #23 on south US 27 and the gates open at 6:00pm on Cruise Friday. Don't forget to step inside the Mall and check out all the great stores open for your shopping pleasure. Put it on your schedule!

The Countdown to the Championship will again comprise six races: Charlotte, Reading, Pa., St. Louis, Dallas, Las Vegas, and Pomona. The events at which the Pro Stock Motorcycle category and the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series will compete at have not yet been announced, but are likely to continue their count of 16 and 12, respectively. 7

Many racers will make the choice to run the weekends at Indy, then head to Ohio for the Vintage Grand Prix at Mid-Ohio. New this year is the Mazda Miata Heritage Cup, this race, the third of a five race series will have its own distinct race and race group made up of first generation 1.6-liter spec Miatas of 1990 to 1993 vintage. This new race class offers a new “entry point” to vintage racing.

Like all SVRA events this race is a great family event. Children 12 years old and under are admitted for free. Admission covers entry to all spectator areas, paddock access and parking.
