“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” “we have the time to do more “hot rod stuff”, a lot of us don’t” I recently had a discussion with some friends centered around losing people we know, friends and family members.

time was close, actually had a LIVE Wake at his favorite watering hole. What a great time was had! Think about that one for a minute. I like it!

Everyone agreed that all those that had passed away, did so at a way too early age. Heck...any age is way too early if you ask me.

Also we all work hard all our lives. We save and save so we can enjoy retirement and a throttling back from punching a clock week in and week out. When we have the time to do more “hot rod stuff”, a lot of us don’t do it! Why?

Couple interesting topics were bantered about. First was about how nice a service there was, for the people who had died. Great memorials and kind words expressed by many in attendance. Expressions of how much that person would be missed. All true.

Life is short gearheads. You know that as well as I do. Make every day count. Fill it with gearhead fun. Don’t be foolish, but buy those parts to get you hot rod or cool car on the road and go have fun. You earned it. You know you can’t take the $$ with you in the casket. You could, but when was the last time you saw that...LOL

Question is, why do we all wait until a person dies to say how we really feel about them? Why not tell them while they are alive! Some folks do, but a lot do not.

And yes...I think you are great!

Jimmy B.

Some years back, a work friend knew he was dying from the Big “ C” and when his

“the fun starts here”….

Road Rumblings….

The award will be presented at the 2017 Street Rod Nationals StreetScene Industry Cocktail Party to be held on Friday, August 4, in Louisville, Kentucky. In 2006 NSRA added the “Builders’ Showcase” to the Street Rod Nationals and as the exhibit halls grew in size and display space, so did the number of cars on display.

Cars that have been on display in the Builders’ Showcase” over the years represent NSRA “Pros’ Picks,” “AMBR” winners, “Great Eight” and “Ridler” award winners and significant “magazine cars!”

Pro builders from all over the country are selected and invited once a year to come and participate in the “Builders’ Showcase” by showing off their latest creations.

If you’re a professional builder and your business is open to the public and would like to be considered for the 2018 “Builders’ Showcase,” we invite you to send a picture of your shop, web site, full contact information and most of all, pictures of the vehicle you would like us to consider. Please submit to: Tom Wilkerson, Special Events Director, 606 W. 28th Place, Lawrence, KS 66046 or call 785 -842-6890 or email nsratom@aol.com.

To help recognize these builders for their cutting edge creativity and attention to style and detail, NSRA and the builders of the “Builders’ Showcase “will select one builder from the 2017 “Builders’ Showcase” to receive a very special award. This builder will represent NSRA as the “2017 Builder of the Year.” 6

L.A. Roadsters Show and GNRS Promoters = More Fun! Ask anyone who has attended one and they will tell you that the L.A. Roadsters Show is one of the best street rod shows...PERIOD! The LA Roadsters has been a club since 1957. Their annual event has been taking place since 1960 and moved to the L.A. County Fairplex in Pomona since 1980. It is held every Fathers day weekend. The L.A. Roadsters Show gets a big change this year. After all the years of putting on their event, this year the club members have decided to hand over that responsibility to a professional show management company, ROD SHOWS. The really cool thing about this decision, is that it was probably easy to make. John Buck who owns ROD SHOWS, has also been a L.A. Roadster member for the past 7 years. ROD SHOWS produces the GNRS and the Sacramento Autorama, so they have a lot of experience with this type of event.. For the 2017 show, LARS is expecting to draw approximately 2,500 rods, customs, and classics. Almost 1,000 of them will be the ’36-and-earlier roadsters, attracting participants from all over the USA and spectators from around the world.

The L.A. Roadsters has a multi-year contract with ROD SHOWS to produce their annual show. With the ROD SHOWS agreement this lets the club retain ownership and involvement, while shifting the huge workload of operating the event away from the members. Sounds Like a WIN—WIN to us!

Story & Photo’s by Jimmy B

Every year since 1963, the Detroit Autorama has been the place to be and the show to be at to see the BEST OF THE BEST in the world of custom cars. This years contenders did not disappoint in any way. The RIDLER award is named for Don Ridler, who was a moving force with the MHRA, in starting the Detroit Autorama. Don’s untimely passing was a big loss, but the MHRA wanted to honor him and so was born the RIDLER Award. The RIDLER is only awarded at the Detroit Autorama, to the vehicle that is being shown for the first time anywhere….PERIOD. Each year a number of vehicles enter and step up to compete for the The RIDLER. To even be considered, your vehicle has to start, run, move forward, backward, turn and brake. This is all demonstrated inside the hall during set up days. If it doesn’t do all the above, your vehicle is not up for the RIDLER. After the vehicle makes the first cut of proving it works, as a vehicle should, then the whittling down starts to take place. By Friday of the show, the Pirelli Great Eight will be announced. Just making it to the Great Eight is a huge honor in itself. As some say, you are in rare air if you make the cut for the Great Eight. As a Great Eight finalist, you are only in the running for the RIDLER award. 22

Once that Great Eight banner is set, some of THE MOST INTENSE and thorough judging you will lever see takes place. The judges for the RIDLER have many years of judging under their belt and no part of the vehicle is missed during judging. Those little LED flashlights will light up (try it on your car sometimes!) parts of the vehicle you never thought they would look at‌.but they do.

Your vehicle is taken out of the regular show competition at the point the Great Eight Banner is put in your display and the decal goes in the window. The car owners and builders have a new and much higher level of nervousness at this point. While they look calm and collected, they are all more nervous and concerned about how the car shows, looks, etc. 23

24

25

This level of judging, based on the level of these builds, is not which car can amass the most points. This judging is about what issues the judges find with each vehicle. Sometimes the difference in winning the RIDLER comes down to hundredths of an inch fit and finish. This years Great Eight had a little of everything. Hot Rods, trucks, Corvette’s and a hand built hot rod too. Enjoy the shots we have of all eight on the following pages for you. On Sunday evening, while it was cold outside in downtown Detroit, everything warmed up for car owner Buddy Jordan and Car Builder Steve Frisbee of Steve Auto Restoration, as the Renaissance Roadster won the 2017 RIDLER Award.

Thanks to all of the Great Eight for putting on one helluva show for all of us! This year
