AFTER 25 YEARS GOODGUYS AND CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY PART WAYS Pleasanton, CA – The Goodguys Southeastern Nationals, an event created by our late founder Gary “Goodguy” Meadors and H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, will no longer be staged at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The decision to part ways with Charlotte Motor Speedway was mutual and amicable. They are a first class facility and we are grateful for our longstanding relationship with them. We are also grateful for all of the support from the hot rodders, sponsors, vendors, party hosts and enthusiasts who made the Southeastern Nationals so great over the years. Thankfully through our North Carolina Nationals in Raleigh – we will still be able to bring the Goodguys Goodtimes to the region. This year’s North Carolina Nationals will be staged April 26-28 at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. Other events within 400 miles of the Charlotte region include the 14th Nashville Nationals in Nashville, TN May 3-5, 2019 and the 2nd Kentucky Nationals in Lexington, KY October 11-13, 2019. We are sad the Southeastern Nationals has come to an end but we remain grateful for a quarter century of hi-banked hot rodding memories! -The Goodguys Gang 6
Brand New Ford-Licensed First-Gen Broncos Everyone’s excited about the upcoming 2020 Ford Bronco, in part, because of what the nameplate means to American culture: adventure, ruggedness, and fun. It was the first-gen model that created this meaning, so it’s cool that one Illinois company is now building those old Broncos from the ground up as a Ford-licensed product. But they’re not cheap. A company out of Illinois, Gateway Bronco has been finding pristine early Broncos and restomodding them for a couple of years now, getting its start in 2016. Recently, the outfit that “reimagines” Broncos announced that it’s the first builder officially licensed from Ford to create first-gen Ford Broncos from scratch, and also the first certified to recondition used Broncos according to Ford standards. The company describes the new Ford agreement in a press release, saying Gateway will build 1966 to 1977 Broncos thanks to the “Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act of 2015,” a program that makes it easier for low-volume manufacturers to get past safety and emissions barriers-to-entry. One way that the Act does this is that it allows low-volume automakers to “install engines from vehicles that have been issued certificates of conformity.” And on that front, Gateway Bronco says it’s using 5.0-liter Coyotes as its primary power plants, with plenty of bolt-on options, like twin turbos, a Borla fuel injection system, or even a Shelby supercharger. Gateway’s website shows three main models ranging in price from $120,000 to $180,000, and offering both automatic or manual options, and warranties as long as five years. If they’ve got Ford’s stamp of approval and a warranty, that also sounds lovely, even if the price tag 7

RIBBIT!
Just as sure as a frog will sit on a lily pad and croak al night long, the FROG FOLLIES hot rod show will take place on the last weekend in August. Hosted each year, for 44 years now, by the E’Ville Iron Street Rod Club, the show is a smooth running machine if you will. From pre-registration, which is a GREAT DEAL for the price (FREE NICE T-SHIRT included), thru the last hot rod leaving he fairgrounds, the E’Ville Iron know how to do it.
From the moment hot rodders and street rodders arrive to the time they leave, there is nothing but a good time had by everyone. The FROG FOLLIES is a ‘drive your hot rod” event. We say that as NO TRAILERS are allowed on the fairgrounds/show area. Yes there are trailers back in the swap meet area, but that’s a whole different deal. If you come to the FOLLIES, you are going to drive your vehicle thru the gate each day you are there. 12
13
The event is held at the Vanderburgh 4-H Center as it has been for years. Plenty of shady spots and grassy areas to park a few thousand cool cars and trucks. All those cars and trucks are Pre-49 with no exception. The E’ville Iron is al about Pre -49 hot rods and trucks and make no excuse about it. Its what they believe in and how they do it year after year. Not many other shows FEED YOU for the price of registration. Not just a box lunch, but a good old fashion BBQ with all the fixings. The vendor area is always packed! Vendors bring their latest wares to show off and sell to al those gearheads looking for some new parts for their rides. If you are looking for a new project, the FROG FOLLIES swap meet is one of the best places in the Midwest to find that dream ride. Need a OEM hard to find part for your project? The FROG FOLLIES swap meet area is a good place to look for it. Swap meet vendors from all over come out for this one. Some gearheads come to the FROG FOLLIES just to take in the swap meet its so good. In the end, this event is about all those cool rides that travel from near and far to be part of this show each year. Friendships are re-kindled from last years show. Make your plans now to attend the 45th Annual Frog Follies in Evansville IN. during the last weekend in August...Froggie sez y’all are invited! Photography by John Greenfield Story by Jimmy B 14

FOR SALE: One Well Used and Speed Proven Wind Tunnel. Who doesn’t need a bit more shaving on the old laminar flow? Not you? Well, how about that hot rod racer down the lane who might have a genuine use for it? No? Think of what great gift this would make to your local university and you’d have a stellar write-off! Originally built by a guy out of sheer curiosity about how aero stuff works and had the spare change to do it really right. Life has downshifted and the spot he had the tunnel installed is no longer available. This tunnel has improved the speeds and records of several dozen land speed cars including George Poteet’s Speed Demon that lays down wicked quick 400+MPH runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats. It is a first-class system with operational credibility and plenty of cheerful grateful testimonials. But wait, there’s more! The owner/builder/operator will put the thing back into full operational form so how can you resist a turn-key deal? Do your diligence and you will quickly realize there is more than a million invested. That’s a whole lotta McKinley's ($500), Cleveland's ($1,000), Madison's ($5,000), and Chase's ($10,000) beside the Franklin’s and Grants. The tunnel is an open circuit, Eiffel style. It was professionally designed and calibrated. Test results show repeatable numbers with less than 1% deviation between runs. The wind tunnel began construction in 2010. It took approx. 4800 man-hours to complete over a two+ year period not including building construction or the pit under the test section of the tunnel. The tunnel is 100' long and 20'+ high at the inlet end. The test section is shaped and approx. 9'-4" high in the center and 13'-6" wide, and 50' long. The three fans are built by Howden and are 150 HP each, 460V, and are 6' in diameter. The fans are controlled by a Mitsubishi Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) with remote controller in the control room. The fans pull air through the test section then the air recirculates in the room. Wind speed in the tunnel varies from about 10mph to 80mph depending on the desired speed and the shape and size of the test object. Test object should not exceed 25 sq. ft. in frontal area for most accurate test results. This is the size of a full size car. The VFD has incremental speed control for accurate airflow around the test object. Under the floor of the test section is a pit which houses the balance. The pit is accessible by a staircase opposite the control room. The balance is a large space frame and is mounted to Honeywell load cells which are designed to hold up to a 10,000 lb. vehicle. There are seven load cells which measure lift, drag, and side forces. All forces are calculated and recorded in an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet displays coefficients for all six forces and moments. It also calculates all forces in Drag HP, Drag LBs, Total Lift, Lift Front and Rear LBs, and Side LBs, all at a customer selected mph. There is also a bicycle balance for testing cyclists and equipment. This balance was used to test 2000 elite cyclists. Airflow is measured by 3 pitot tubes in the inlet and 2 static ports in the aft portion of the test section which feed to a pressure transducer panel. Air turbulence is eliminated by a 3" thick aluminum honeycomb panel in the fore part of the test section. Plastic netting was added for better control. Vehicles enter the tunnel through a hinged door in the aft of the tunnel next to the fans. The current room dimensions are 49' wide, 140' long, and 35' high. A lower ceiling will be acceptable. Included in the sale: Complete wind tunnel structure from the inlet to the fan diffusers. Mitsubishi VFD. Balance with load cells and complete wiring to the control room. Bicycle balance platform with Computrainer installed. Ski Jumper beam. A large variety of car mounting stands. Complete computer system with Windows OS. Data Acquisition System including 13 pressure channels with pressure taps to the pit. Aerolab smoke generator wand. The buyer will be responsible for the building and the balance pit, all of which will be dimensionally specified in the sale. At an additional cost, I can assemble everything on the new site for a "turn key" operation including training of new operator. The complete wind tunnel will be broken down and palletized to ship. Reconstruction will take approx. 2-3 months when the building is ready. The electrical wiring of the fans and control room will have to be done professionally on site.. Approximate cost to construct in 2010, not including the building or pit: $400,000 package cost for design plans, computer hardware, software, Data Acquisitions System, bicycle balance, smoke wand. 115,000 fans with inlet bells. 30,000 VFD . 80,000 materials. 210,000 building preparation including the pit and electrical. 230,000 labor. Price: $600K For more info
