“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”
“What will 2019 bring for gearheads??”
THANKS 2018...Hello 2019!
As we head into 2019 in a few days, we start our 19th year of producing the Gearhead Gazzette. What started out as a simple email many years ago has grown into an on-line magazine that has readers around the world.
As I write this, 2018 is fading fast in the rearview mirror and 2019 is showing up in the windshield at a rapid rate of speed! I have to say, I do not like this rapid passing of time as I age each year...HA!
What will 2019 bring for gearheads?? That’s a good question. I see plenty of car shows, both multiday events by the “big guys” and more 1 day fun type runs across the country. Add in more cruise night and cruise morning fun. If anything, I see more folks going to the 1 day events and a backing off of going to the multi-day shows. No worries the big events aren't going anywhere, but some of them will see less attendees and participants. I say this because it is a cost issue, not a “I don’t want to go” issue.
End of the year brings reflection for many, including us here at the Gearhead Gazzette. Taking a look back is a good thing as we should learn from history. We are thankful for all of our readers and subscribers. Our subscriber list grew again on 2018 and for that we are thankful. We take that as a positive sign that what we are doing is what you like. As you already know, the Gearhead Gazzette is free to read. We are thankful for all of our advertisers in 2018. A lot of them were repeat customers and we like that. It says to us, what we do around here works for business too.
I see some changes to the Gearhead Gazzette too. We’re going to tweak it a little bit here and there to make it even better for you. I count on your feedback on how it goes and how you like it.
We are also thankful for good health that lets us have all this gearhead fun each and week. Making memories is important and we try to make them all great so our history is meaningful.
HAPPY NEW YEAR Gearheads...now FLOOR IT!
Jimmy B.

Virginia Students Win HROT Championship High school students at the Dec. 6-8 PRI Show buzzed around several Chevy 350 high performance engines, tearing them apart and re-assembling them in mere minutes. This of course was for the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge 2018 Dual Championship, which pitted eight high school auto clubs against one another with scholarship money on the line.
In the end, it was Team Vibrant Performance from Burton Center for Arts & Tech in Salem, Virginia that emerged as the 2018 HROT champion. Team Vibrant Performance averaged 17 minutes and 26 seconds in several rounds disassembling the Chevy engines and putting them back together. It was the third HROT championship for a team coached by Burton Center’s Chris Overfelt. “I am in shock all over again,” he said. “I was not nervous because the team has kept their composure all week”. It was a close competition as all of the Elite Eight teams flew around the Chevy 350 high performance engines. All eight teams had at least one perfect engine build. Teams Engine & Performance Warehouse, Vibrant, and Edelbrock each had two perfect engine builds during the Elite Eight playoffs. The total time difference between first and fourth place teams was just 2 minutes and 8 seconds. The final half of the two-part Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge 2018 Dual Championship took place at the PRI Show in Indianapolis. It included 17 teams coming from all across the U.S. with the hopes of becoming one of four teams to move on and compete in the Elite Eight playoffs against four other teams awarded an Elite Eight berth during the first part of the championship, held at the SEMA Show. A total of 44 teams competed at the SEMA and PRI shows to get into the Elite Eight competition. The top four SEMA show seeds against the top four PRI show seeds. The times in HROT competition are based on three important factors: The average time from three rounds of taking apart and reassembling the engine; penalty minutes added for mistakes made during disassembly and reassembly; and a 50-question written test on parts and tools identification along with general engine and rules knowledge. Each student in the HROT Dual Championship earned scholarship opportunities ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 from Ohio Technical College, School of Automotive Machinists & Technology, and Universal Technical Institute. For more information about the HROT program, contact Greg Parker at 574-315-1938 6
Mid-Engine C8 Corvette Debut Likely For Summer 2019 Previously, GM Authority broke the news that the 2019 North American International Auto Show would not play host to the mid-engine C8 Corvette’s debut. In fact, we also learned and exclusively reported the car had been delayed six months due to electrical issues. When will the mid-engine C8 Corvette show up? Likely summer of 2019, according to our sources close to the matter. GM Authority can confirm a major auto show will not star the debut of the highly anticipated sports car. Instead, look for the mid-engine Corvette to have its own standalone reveal. Although we never confirmed a New York Auto Show debut next year, we did highlight the show’s importance to the Corvette and previously brought up the possibility. The original 1953 Corvette model debuted in the Big Apple that year during GM’s annual Motorama event. Our sources have floated a summer 2019 debut, perhaps May at the earliest. Enthusiasts and fans will need to hold tight for a while longer as Chevrolet prepares to show off the most revolutionary Corvette in decades. It’s unclear if the car was ever meant to debut at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, but engineers uncovered a major electrical issue with the car during the development process. According to our sources, the system is currently unable to carry the necessary load needed to support components. Thus, a total re-engineering effort of the electrical system is underway, which also means GM must coordinate with suppliers to tweak parts and components for production at the Bowling Green assembly plant. The 29th Annual East Coast Indoor Nationals, held at the Cow Palace in Timonium, Maryland was “the” place where East Coast automotive and motorsports enthusiasts came together to share their hobby again this year, during the first weekend of December. With more than 300 vehicles on display, automotive enthusiasts from around the local area and other far off area’s came to get an escape from the late fall & early winter blues.
The nearly 200,000sq foot facility at the Maryland State Fairgrounds was filled wall to wall with various automotive exhibits. If you enjoy the automotive hobby, from automotive parts to apparel, to custom art work, die-cast collectibles to slot cars, live entertainment, music, food and so much more, they had it all on display for participants and spectators to enjoy. 10

The East Coast’s Largest Indoor Invitational Car Show, featured the region's finest nostalgia rods, street rods, kustoms, trucks, bikes, stocks and, this year, some unique imports too, all competing for over $8500 in cash plus awards. A big part of the ECIN, The Toys for Tots collection continued to be an effort of the USMCR to support local needy kids up to 17 years old, by providing toys during the Christmas season. The ECIN continues to support these efforts and hosted a 50/50 raffle on both days of the show, where 50% of the total pots were donated to the local Toys for Tots chapter. Make your plans now for the 2019 edition of this great event either as a participant or just to check it out. Photography by “Big” Al Liebmann Story by Jimmy B

FOR SALE: One Well Used and Speed Proven Wind Tunnel. Who doesn’t need a bit more shaving on the old laminar flow? Not you? Well, how about that hot rod racer down the lane who might have a genuine use for it? No? Think of what great gift this would make to your local university and you’d have a stellar write-off! Originally built by a guy out of sheer curiosity about how aero stuff works and had the spare change to do it really right. Life has downshifted and the spot he had the tunnel installed is no longer available. This tunnel has improved the speeds and records of several dozen land speed cars including George Poteet’s Speed Demon that lays down wicked quick 400+MPH runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats. It is a first-class system with operational credibility and plenty of cheerful grateful testimonials. But wait, there’s more! The owner/builder/operator will put the thing back into full operational form so how can you resist a turn-key deal? Do your diligence and you will quickly realize there is more than a million invested. That’s a whole lotta McKinley's ($500), Cleveland's ($1,000), Madison's ($5,000), and Chase's ($10,000) beside the Franklin’s and Grants. The tunnel is an open circuit, Eiffel style. It was professionally designed and calibrated. Test results show repeatable numbers with less than 1% deviation between runs. The wind tunnel began construction in 2010. It took approx. 4800 man-hours to complete over a two+ year period not including building construction or the pit under the test section of the tunnel. The tunnel is 100' long and 20'+ high at the inlet end. The test section is shaped and approx. 9'-4" high in the center and 13'-6" wide, and 50' long. The three fans are built by Howden and are 150 HP each, 460V, and are 6' in diameter. The fans are controlled by a Mitsubishi Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) with remote controller in the control room. The fans pull air through the test section then the air recirculates in the room. Wind speed in the tunnel varies from about 10mph to 80mph depending on the desired speed and the shape and size of the test object. Test object should not exceed 25 sq. ft. in frontal area for most accurate test results. This is the size of a full size car. The VFD has incremental speed control for accurate airflow around the test object. Under the floor of the test section is a pit which houses the balance. The pit is accessible by a staircase opposite the control room. The balance is a large space frame and is mounted to Honeywell load cells which are designed to hold up to a 10,000 lb. vehicle. There are seven load cells which measure lift, drag, and side forces. All forces are calculated and recorded in an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet displays coefficients for all six forces and moments. It also calculates all forces in Drag HP, Drag LBs, Total Lift, Lift Front and Rear LBs, and Side LBs, all at a customer selected mph. There is also a bicycle balance for testing cyclists and equipment. This balance was used to test 2000 elite cyclists. Airflow is measured by 3 pitot tubes in the inlet and 2 static ports in the aft portion of the test section which feed to a pressure transducer panel. Air turbulence is eliminated by a 3" thick aluminum honeycomb panel in the fore part of the test section. Plastic netting was added for better control. Vehicles enter the tunnel through a hinged door in the aft of the tunnel next to the fans. The current room dimensions are 49' wide, 140' long, and 35' high. A lower ceiling will be acceptable. Included in the sale: Complete wind tunnel structure from the inlet to the fan diffusers. Mitsubishi VFD. Balance with load cells and complete wiring to the control room. Bicycle balance platform with Computrainer installed. Ski Jumper beam. A large variety of car mounting stands. Complete computer system with Windows OS. Data Acquisition System including 13 pressure channels with pressure taps to the pit. Aerolab smoke generator wand. The buyer will be responsible for the building and the balance pit, all of which will be dimensionally specified in the sale. At an additional cost, I can assemble everything on the new site for a "turn key" operation including training of new operator. The complete wind tunnel will be broken down and palletized to ship. Reconstruction will take approx. 2-3 months when the building is ready. The electrical wiring of the fans and control room will have to be done professionally on site.. Approximate cost to construct in 2010, not including the building or pit: $400,000 package cost for design plans, computer hardware, software, Data Acquisitions System, bicycle balance, smoke wand. 115,000 fans with inlet bells. 30,000 VFD . 80,000 materials. 210,000 building preparation including the pit and electrical. 230,000 labor. Price: $600K For more info
