“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” “ Hot Rod Veterans...our hero’s!” After the war ended

On Friday November 11th, our country honors our Veterans. Veterans Day is the day that ALL Veterans both living and deceased are honored.

many guys returned to California and stayed there, landing jobs in aerospace firms and the like. They took the knowledge they learned while serving our country as well as what they were learning working in different companies and putting it to use building faster hot rods. Not only that, but more than a few started their own performance based business in their home garage or elsewhere, and the rest as they say is history.

Within our hobby/industry, we have many many hot rodders who are veterans and have served our country in the military. From a look back, historical point, our whole hobby quite honestly was founded by veterans of WW2. Hot rodding was growing prior to WW2. Racing on the dry lakes was going on, street racing , dirt track racing and stadium racing like ASCOT and others across the country was growing...and then the war hit.

For us as hot rodders, these particular veterans not only served their country, they created our hobby to a large degree. On Veterans Day, thank a Vet! They are one who put their life on the line to defend our freedoms and allow us to have the life we enjoy today. I would ask that you take a personal moment of silence and say a prayer for all those who have paid the ultimate price to allows us to do what we do each day. It’s the least we all can do or what we enjoy.

All those guys that were building racing and having fun with hot rods, got taken off to defend our country. While they were away in strange lands either in the Pacific or European Regions of the world, they were dreaming about those hot rods back home. Many a story has been told of guys working in the motor pool or on the flight line, and the “souping up” of jeeps and staff cars going on.

But thanks to Jason Graham’s talent and Todd Williams’ trust in Graham, the union bore fruit producing one of the sexiest trucks to ever come along.

Every year, at GOODGUYS Rod & Custom Assoc. shows across the USA, hot rodders enter their cool rides in the various judging area’s that are set up at the events.

Williams, a Phoenix, Arizona resident, purchased this 1961 Ford F100 from the family of the truck’s original owner in northern California. It would be safe to say they probably never dreamed their old truck would ever end up as nice as this, but builder Jason Graham pulled out all the stops to enhance the already popular Unibody and created a showstopper for Williams.

Four of the most popular awards that come out of the judging all year, are the Truck of the Year Late, Truck of the Year Early, Muscle Machine of the Year and Muscle Car of the Year. Winning one of these awards, says a lot about the vehicle, the builder and owner of the winners.

At Graham’s shop in Portland, Tennessee, the top was chopped a modest two inches and the drip rails were shaved. The cowl was filled and one-piece glass was added to the doors for a tidy cab. The original bumpers were trimmed and tucked, and the parking lights were eliminated from the grille.

This is the last issue, where we will feature the “Of The Year” award winner from Goodguys So, without further ado…we present to you the 2016 “Truck of the Year—Late” Award winner.

The letters were shortened three inches to better fit the one-off tailgate and the bed was fully lined. All of the hinges and latches were shaved and custom stainless strips were crafted. The first F100 suspension kit from Porterbuilt was added to the stock frame rails to help tuck the painted and polished 22-inch Schott wheels after all of the cross-members were boxed and fully welded.

I have to say, all 4 “OTY’s” are great choices but this one is my personal favorite, from the first time I saw it at the Detroit AUTORAMA this year.—Jimmy B

Todd Williams Phoenix, AZ 1961 Ford Pickup Ford designers could have never envisioned their work horse unibody truck would one day transform into contemporary hot rodding’s Truck of the Year. 18

Power is a fully dressed and detailed Ford Racing Coyote 5.0L with custom headers and a 4R70 overdrive transmission. After the custom-mixed PPG Mahogany Pearl paint was dry and polished the truck was taken to Josh Miller in New London, Ohio for a custom Relicate leather interior with embossed inserts. The custom seats flank a trick one-off console. The smoothed dash now features a leather pad, one-off CON2R gauges, a Budnik steering wheel and an Ididit steering column.

The colors mirror Williams’ alma mater – Arizona State University. Needless to say – he is now one happy Sun Devil! The big win marks the first Goodguys Top 12 triumph for both Graham and Williams. In Scottsdale at season’s end, Williams will receive an exclusive award from Goodguys, a spot in the Top 12 exhibit at the Southwest Nationals Nov 18-20 at Westworld and a full custom toolbox courtesy of Snap-on. Ahhh...you can smell the model glue now! How many of you spent part of your youth building model cars or other models like ships or planes? I did! It was mostly cars for me. It helped fuel my love for hot rods and muscle cars. I am sure for all of you who built models, it had the same affect on you as me. Model car building is still as popular today as it was when a lot of us were growing up 30-40 years ago. A lot of gearheads never lost the urge to put a model kit together or “kitbash a couple of kits to build the model car they dreamed up.

About 37 years ago , in Toledo OH, The NNL Model show took place for the very first time. NNL standing for Nameless National Luminaries. This event, and the regional ones also are a non-competitive event.

The NNL invites model builders of all ages and skill levels to participate and show off their latest or favorite builds. No awards, no judging, just showing and talking about how they built what they built. Modelers share build tips and tricks with each other throughout the events.

For this years Toledo show, some of the members of the “MODEL CITIZENS CLUB” from the Chicago area, road tripped to Toledo to take in the show. Being avid model builders and collectors, this was an easy decision to make the trip. Thanks to our good friends “Rockin’” Rick Hannah and Joel “Peter Pan” Peters for the cool pic’s, that we have featured in this article. Both Rick & Joel got it bad for building model cars and enjoying a “glue buzz” when the Model Citizens Meet. In a world of video games and watching TV all day and night, why get your kids or grandkids or even yourself up to the table and have some table top fun! Photos by Joel Peters & Rick Hannah.
