This week, MOTOR TREND Magazine announced the winner of their CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD.

of the COTY, have gone on to become iconic hot rod and muscle car material.

The winner...the all new Chevy BOLT. The BOLT is an all electric car until its bigger brother the VOLT, which does have a gasoline engine in it to charge the batteries only.

Torino, Road Runner, Thunderbird, Camaro and the list goes on. The very first COTY award in 1949 actually went to a car division instead of a car itself. Cadillac won the award for their all new Overhead Valve V8 engine. Cadillac originally snubbed the award because they didn't think much of it at the time. Today, they talk about being the 1st winner all the time.

To car manufacturers the COTY award is very very important. It means additional sales and a years worth of bragging and advertising.

Some are asking about now, where am I headed with this, as the BOLT is no hot rod, muscle car or cool cruiser. But will it be?

Oh yea...that Caddy OHV V8 nobody thought much of...check your hot rod history. They ended up in a lot of hot rods….

If the history of the COTY awards shows us anything, it does show that many of the 4

winners, a Goodguys Street Rod of the Year, a Ridler Winner as well as Goodguys giveaway cars. Throughout his journey, his wife Pam has been there every step of the way and was initially responsible for convincing him to make the leap from corporate designer to full time hot rod illustrator.

Erick Brockmeyer named Goodguys 2016 Trendsetter Award Winner

Eric Brockmeyer was named Goodguys 2016 Trendsetter at last week’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The Goodguys Trendsetter Award is presented annually at the SEMA show and recognizes rising talents in the hot rod and custom car scene. Brockmeyer began his rise and steady career arch to the top of hot rod and street machine design from the time he was a kid on the floor building models, hot rods and drawing cars. As a child, he couldn’t possibly have envisioned his journey to the top, but like anything in life…it was a process a journey.

He said “I am so fortunate to have my passion for hot rod design as a career. I would like to thank the builders for trusting me with their projects and my wife Pam for supporting me for so many years.” In the eighteen year history of the Goodguys Trendsetter award, Brockmeyer is the first designer/illustrator to ever receive it. Past recipients of the Goodguys Trendsetter Award include Chip Foose, Troy Trepanier, Alan Johnson, Eric Peratt, Tim Strange, Dave Lane, Zane Cullen, Dean Livermore, Jesse Greening, Troy Ladd, J.F. Launier, Phil & Jeremy Gerber, Mike & Jim Ring, Curt Ukasik, Dave Kindig, Jonathan Goolsby & Josh Henning, Andy Leach and Troy Gudgel. Eric’s work can be seen at www.brockmeyerdesign.com

Convinced he could have a career as a designer, he enrolled in the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale graduating in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in industrial design. Though his first professional design job was with Sea Ray Boats, his passion and hobby was designing hot rods. He got so good at hot rod design, the late Boyd Coddington came calling in 2003 for help in designing a Model A Tudor to be named the AlumaTub. That went so well, Coddington commissioned him to design the “French Connection” – a hand built concept custom based on a 1939 Delahaye. Soon after that, hot rodding’s elite builders turned the look and feel of their coming attractions over the keen eye and skilled pen of Eric Brockmeyer. Since going to hot rod and street machine design full time, he has created the illustrations, style, interior and color schemes of three Goodguys Street Machine of the Year

Goodguys President Marc Meadors presented designer Eric Brockmeyer with the 2016 Trendsetter Award at the SEMA show in Las Vegas. 6

The SEMA Show is somewhat of a Camarobuilders dream, especially this year. The Ringbrothers’ latest...The “G-Code” Camaro is another home run!

this combo. This awesome power is passed through a Tremec six-speed transmission.

Since they exploded onto the car scene, the Ringbrothers have gone from just a body & repair shop, to one of the premier custom car builders in the country. This was very obvious, when everyone saw the “G-Code” Camaro build at the show. Show goer’s literally surrounded it all the time the show was open. The Ringbrothers are more known for their show-stopping Mustang builds. In fact, this is only the second ’69 Camaro they’ve ever built.

Don’t let this Camaro’s good looks fool you, the “G-Code” wasn’t made to be just a car show queen. Complete Detroit Speed suspension setup, custom headers by Ringbrothers, full stainless steel Flowmaster exhaust, Baer brakes with 15-inch rotors in the front and and 14-inch rotors in the rear. After seeing this build, its easy to see why this Camaro was such a popular build at this years SEMA’ show. ,The Ringbrothers won Chevrolet’s Design Award for “Car of the Year.”, and with good reason. The Ringbrothers never disappoint at SEMA, and have proven that again, with the “G-Code Camaro.

The brothers enhanced the ’69’s body lines with billet products, carbon fiber, a killer paint job, and matte gold HRE wheels made to look like the ’80s IROC-Z. Lift the hood and more WOW hits you. They installed a Whipplesupercharged 416ci Wegner LS3 and THIS IS the most powerful Chevrolet they have ever 7

A topic of great debate amongst hot rodders, since hot rodding began, is which style of hot rod is the most popular. Is it the iconic roadster, with its topless, wind in your hair, and the occasional bug in your teeth (your smiling a lot driving a hot rod!) experience? Or as some hot rodders will argue, it’s the cool coupe with a nasty rake, some with fenders and some hi-boy style.

No one can argue though, when hot rodding got started many moons ago, guys took a roadster, because it was cheaper that a coupe, and started hopping them up. They stripped them down all in an effort to make them go faster on “the lakes” or event the street, back in the day.

Make no mistake, if it’s the end of January and it’s So-Cal, “IT’s ROADSTER TIME!”

For the past 67 years, The Grand National Roadster Show has taken place. The highlight of the show is the crowning of AMERICA’s MOST BEAUTIFUL ROADSTER. While the GNRS is more than just roadster, make no mistake, this show is ALL ABOUT THE ROADSTERS! Coupes are cool but this one is all about those topless hot rods

After WW2 ended, and the guys came back from the war, with pent up enthusiasim, mechanical training, some money in their pockets, they took their hot rods to another level with paint and a finished interior too. 24

With good looking roadsters, it was only natural that someone would come up with car show to show them off.

Enter the Oakland Roadster show 67 years ago. Oakland California quickly became the epicenter of all things roadster.

Over the years, many a man, and woman too have dreamed about one day winning the “BIG TROPHY at the “Roadster Show:” They built hot rods chasing their dream of being part of a small group of people, to have their names engraved on the BIG TROPHY.

Why some ask...simply because it was what was important to them. It represents the pinnacle in part of our hot rod hobby and way of life. It is no harder than that to understand. It is there dream. 25

Some who have chased this dream of winning the AMBR award, have been fortunate and lucky...yes lucky as things lined up just right for them to win more then one time over the years.

During the weekend and show, speculation ran high as to which of the 12 would be this years AMBR winner. Many had their personal favorites, based on a style of build. As the weekend drew closer to awards time, talk amongst the “seasoned veterans” turned to 2 cars. A very traditional built car and a car that followed a simple style and had proven itself with thousands of miles run up on the odometer, after a break in trip to the 2016 Lone Star Roundup in Texas.

For 2016, 12 roadster owners were chasing their dreams to win the “Big One”. They wee able to make it past the scrutiny of the judging team, who did the pre-set up review on each car. How did it look? What kind of stance and image did it have and give? Could it move and drive, as it should, because hot rods are about driving. Once past these reviews, they were able to set up and display their hot rods for all to see.

In the end, Darryl & Terri Hollenbeck’s 1932 Ford Roadster took home the “Big Trophy” Their dreams came true in 2016.
