“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” “ the most shows packed into them all year long”
Welcome to the 1st day of Fall Y’all!
The next 2 weekends have the most shows packed into them, for any weekend all year long. Don’t look at this as bad...it’s great. Pick the one you want and go have some big time gearhead fun!
While the Calendar says it’s the Fall Season north of the equator on this rock we call earth, in my neck of the woods it still feels like summer. 90 degree days will do that! While the Fall season will eventually bring cooler temps to most of us (yea yea we know the California, Florida and Arizona guys laugh) here in the USA, it also means that our “hot rod” fun time is dwindling down for most of us. Before you know it, a lot of gearheads will be tucking their hot rods away for the winter sleep.
2017 Car Show & Cruise Info: It’s never too early to start sending in your event and cruise info for 2017. Quite honestly we have received quite a bit already. We can’t stress enough, include the town, state, and a person to contact with questions about your event. Send us a flyer too.
This weekend though, across the USA is not sleep time for that cool car of yours. NO NO NO! It’s time to get it out of the garage/shop and go have some big fun with it.
“the fun starts here”…. 4

The “GREAT RACE”
Leading up to the event my dad was putting a lot of time in getting the car ready. We would be rallying in his bright red 32 Ford with a 4-cylinder model B engine, with a Miller overhead valve conversion. This car was technically built for a Great Race that took place in the 1980’s, long before we owned the car. From what we heard, the owner didn’t like the car for the rallying and had another car built for the race the following year.
This was just a phrase to me a few years ago. I had heard about the Great Race, but I didn’t think much of it. I thought “well it’s not real racing, it’s for old people, it’s not that exciting.” A time-speed rally... what does that even mean.. it can’t be that exciting… Boy was I wrong!
We didn’t know anything else about rallying ability.. and honestly probably wouldn’t have understood, if someone had told us more about it.
In early May of 2010, my dad approached me and asked if I wanted to do a VCRA (Vintage Car Rally Association) event with him in Bowling Green Kentucky. The event was to take place in the final week of July. I could tell that he wanted to do it, and I thought it would be nice to spend some time together, so I said, “Sure, I’ll do the race with you”
My Dad spent a lot of time reading the rules and the suggested 'pre-race check list.' I was less involved, kind of assuming, “how serious can this be? Isn't this just a hobby...It’ll probably just be like a car show... of which, I have been to many. Probably nearly one hundred of them over my childhood.
My dad told me that my job would be to navigate. He said I would be the one keeping us on course and monitoring the time. I still wasn’t exactly sure what was involved but from what I heard it seemed like something that I would enjoy doing.
32
We picked up one of the Timewise Speedometers that are necessary to read accurate speed, and we made 'the chart.' The chart is the standard deceleration/ acceleration chart. On the road, you mark a static distance and then time yourself in your 0-30 mph acceleration, 0-50 mph, 0-10 mph and any increments you want (no more than 5 mph increments are necessary) and them the same with deceleration.
awaited anxiously to see our place. There were free cocktails, chips and pretzels for the rallyers as we milled around and waited for the results. Finally, after about 20 minutes, rally master John came into the room and posted two pieces of paper on the wall, they were the official results. Dad and I walked over to the results and scanned down from the top to the bottom looking for our name; a practice I am most familiar with being a distance runner. We find our names:
We also met with a guy who had been a navigator on The Great Race before. He gave us a few pointers about how to read the instructions we would be given. It was interesting, but I still assumed that its just for fun.. probably like going to the NSRA Nationals.
42nd place! We sat second to last in the rookies and third to last over all. We had 48sec of cumulative error for the half day practice run.
The Rally
The awe and confusion that I had felt since arriving to the rally 48 hours ago began to dissipate quickly. I thought to myself “How did we finish so low? I know we are new but third to last? How did this happen?”
The first day we had a technical inspection then a quick lecture on the do’s and don’ts of the rally. We were then handed a thin set of instructions and headed out on the half day practice run.
I sipped on coke in a melancholy state, I grabbed a bowl of pretzels and began to chew them down. The questions began to rollin, filling my mind; How did we lose so much time? Was it the stop signs? The speed changes?
We drove out of the parking lot and made our way to the beginning of the timed section. I was flipping through instructions realizing that I couldn't really make a mistake or we would get lost. Then we got to the 30mph sign that denotes the beginning of the timed section. OK.
All of the sudden, I wasn't having as much fun as I was having half and hour before. Things had gotten more serious.
Then, 15 seconds later, a stop sign. Then, 40 seconds later a hard right hander. “Oh, Shit!” I yelled out as we completely botch the first stop sign.
I needed to figure out how to fix these problems. Dad is milling around with the other rallyers, all more experienced, trying to get some advice for our obviously disillusioned tactics. After some questioning and answering back and fourth the consensus was… they didn't know. We seemed to be doing everything correctly. The chart we made before the rally seemed to be done right. We knew the theory behind the stop signs and the breaks.
After the half-day practice day was over, we assembled back in the lobby of Embassy Suites and Convention center in Bowling Green, KY. It was here that our scores would be posted for the days run. We were in our first time-speed precision rally of any kind and sat in the rookie class but we still 33
We knew how to use the speedometer. Some suggested maybe a recalibration of our speedo? Maybe a missed instruction? To me that doesn’t seem to account for 48 seconds worth of error.
And there it was, a big problem, the speed changes (Ex: at this stop sign go from 30 to 40 mph) were not being done correctly. I had been applying an estimated error to those that was no where near enough. I pulled out 'the chart' and went back over the previous days instructions, one by one, with the heat of the moment gone, I carefully calculated the theoretical time loss/ gain for these speed change maneuvers. I marked them against the sharpie notes that I had down... 39 seconds of error. That's what it accounted for.
The next morning I awoke at 6:00 am. I wanted to get a few hours of work in before breakfast. I needed to find the problem. Speedo calibration couldn't be all of it. It just couldn't. I flipped open my sharpie-riddled sheet of instructions and began to pry through them.
After, the first full day of rallying, more than twice the time of the previous practice day, we again stood waiting in the lobby waiting for our results. After twenty minutes or so the sheets went up. I nervously walked over to find our name, I started at the bottom and started running my figure up the list. 15 seconds cumulative error. First in the Rookie class. And 12th overall. I was hooked.

OCT 2016: OCT 1-2: FIREBAUGH CA: 8TH ANNUAL HOT ROD GATHERING: 1/8th mile Runway Drag Racing. Honoring two very special guests who played a big part in the history of Fremont Dragstrip. Eves Tall Chief and Rich Welch were on hand during the Glory Days of Drag Racing at Fremont, with Chief handling the starting line and Flag Starting many greats (until the flag was ultimately replaced with the "Christmas Tree"), and Rich capturing these moments on film. See these two back in action on Saturday Oct 1st as they both enjoy "Living Drag Race History", and go back in time to perform their respective roles. Saturday race is a "TruStalgia" event with entries limited to 1973 & earlier, featuring Jet Dragsters, Dragsters, Altereds, Gassers, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Mini Bikes and MORE! All being Flag Started by Chief and Earl Boyajian. Saturday races are not timed, just good old fashioned "Run Whatcha Brung" Drag Racing. This event has brought out many vehicles that have been parked for years, vehicles you won't see race anywhere else in California, and celebrities who have come to enjoy the "time warp" atmosphere of the Eagle Field Drags. For fans and racers who don't want the good times to end, we open up the hangar after the races for refreshments and dancing while a local band plays on the Eagle Field Stage. Sunday morn-
ing we open the gates for the KBK Fall Finish Drags that welcomes all years of American vehicles. The KBK Fall Finish features Christmas Tree Starts with ET slips supplied to racers, "Open Grudge Lanes" for participants to "Run-for-Fun", and two "Heads Up Quick 8" categories featuring the quickest DoorSlammers in the Valley. The "Quick 8 DoorSlammer" category features entries that have a few rules to limit modifications, while the StreetSlammer category is more street-oriented, restricted to a 10.5 wide tire and no power adders. Please check www.eaglefielddrags.com for category rules. Check www.eaglefielddrags.com for the event schedule, entry prices, camping info, updates and special announcements.
