“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

“Congratulations on your win” and leave it at that. There’s Neapolitan Ice Cream because everybody ain’t just Chocolate & Vanilla...

There were many others like me at the show and at home watching on FB & IG, who wanted a different vehicle to win. The thing I didn't do and wont do ever, and many other didn't either, is RIP on the car that did win. There are more than a few “computer car builders” who didn't attend the show and so called car building “experts” who did attend the show, who are tearing up this years RIDLER winner with acidic comments. When you see things like “it was a sympathy award” cause the original owner died before the car was done, or “anybody could win by spending a couple of millions dollars over 10 or more years” … it’s just wrong! A REAL GEARHEAD would or did say, “Congratulations on your win” and leave it at that. Show some respect for the winner whether it was your pic or not. If you weren’t there, just looking at pictures online DOES NOT MAKE YOU AN EXPERT on the judges pick, not matter who you are.

I had a great time at this years Detroit Autorama. Hanging with good friends for the weekend and digging all those cool cars, trucks, motorcycles and more all weekend long. We tried to keep our readers and followers entertained with plenty of pics on our FACEBOOK & INSTAGRAM pages. We hope you enjoyed them. The beauty of this size and type of event/show, is that there is something for just about everybody. Always going to be a few folks who like nothing at the show...oh well their loss in my opinion. The other thing that happens when you have a competition like THE GREAT 8 and THE RIDLER, peoples opinions will vary on what they thought was good, bad somewhere in-between on the picks the judges made. Remember that last part….THE JUDGES MADE.

Let’s go back to THE JUDGES MADE thing from earlier. Only the judges looked at the whole car, and all the cars. Not any of the rest of us got to crawl in, on and over the cars to make the pick. THEY DID...not you..not me. Thank you judges for you hard work. To the RIDLER WINNER and all of the GREAT 8...Congratulations!

As in years past, not everyone agrees that the vehicle chosen for the RIDELR Award should be the one that gets it People have their favorites for many different reasons. I will say publicly that the CADMAD that won this year was not the one I was pulling for. I was pulling for the ‘32 Vicky as my #1 choice and the blue Chevelle as my close 2nd choice. In the end my choices didn't pan out. That’s ok.

Live It Fully Everyday

Pfaff Reimagines One of His Most Iconic Builds The Imperial Speedster is a concept car by Pfaff Designs that Chrysler never envisioned. Designed and built by Murray Pfaff, this two-seat sports-car features the fabrication of Detroit’s most talented craftsmen and engineers. Starting with a 1959 Imperial Crown Custom four-door sedan, the body was cut into 46 major sections and welded back together to create a vision unlike anything before. This garage-built marvel has gone on to win more than a dozen of the top awards in the country, including the Go For The Gold award, and the Mothers Choice Award given to the top 10 cars at the SEMA Show. It was even featured at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, California, and has made the cover of 11 auto magazines. With such a long rap sheet, it certainly makes one wonder why Pfaff would tear the Imperial Speedster apart. That’s right, Pfaff has totally reimagined the Imperial Speedster and debuted the new creation—The Imperial Evolution—at the 2019 Detroit Autorama. “The Imperial Speedster has been there and done that. I could tell where it needed a few little tweaks and touchups even though it was still really showing well,” “Once I added up the tweaks, changes and things I wanted to improve upon, I was already far down the rabbit hole said Pfaff” The Imperial Speedster took more than 10,000 hours to build, fusing modern technology and classic styling from the Motorama era. Pfaff's experience wrenching and fabricating the car didn’t make creating the Imperial Evolution any easier. “With plenty of spare time to complete a project, it’s always down to the wire. I haven’t stood back and taken a long look at it. I really saw it for the first time this weekend myself,” Pfaff said. Gone are the iconic champagne and orange colors of the Imperial Speedster having been replaced with stately PPG Envirobase green designed by Pfaff for the Imperial Evolution. To complement that, a chocolate brown folding top and plaid accented interior by Shawn Paul Custom Interiors was being created, along with gauges by Con2r. Also Throttle billet rollers with tri-bar knock-offs from Schott Performance Wheels completed the transformation. 9

Story & Photography by Jimmy B Every year, in the middle of winter, for decades now, hot rodders have made the trek to Detroit to enter and try to be one of the few who are picked as the BEST OF THE BEST, in the world of Hot Rodding and Custom Cars. Despite freezing cold, piles of snow (some year more than others and some none) and running out of time sometimes to make the show, these hard core show car hot rodders bring themselves to COBO Hall to see if they have what it takes. The GREAT 8...many have tried to be part of that elusive club over the years, including in 2019. The MHRA RIDLER Judges look over the cars with a close eye, not looking for what’s right, but at this level they are looking for that 1 or 2 things that are not up to the GREAT 8 measure, On Friday of the Detroit Autorama, right around noon time, the tension and nervousness rises greatly as the judges emerge from the show office with the GREAT 8 flags in hand, to present to those found worthy enough and who have made the grade. For this year. There are 2 looks to be seen. The look of sheer delight when the flag is set in the display of one of the 8 for the year., and the look of much disappointment when the flag is not put into a display. The ultimate HIGH and LOW at the same time for different hot rodders. Here on these pages are the eight vehicles who made the grade to be called a GREAT 8 Vehicle for 2019. We have this years winner of the DON RIDLER award too, who bested the seven other vehicles to forever wear the title...RIDLER WINNER for 2019. This years RIDLER winner is CADMAD, a 1959 Eldorado Brougham that has been heavily massaged into what you see here now. 28

! A little bit about the CADMAD. Fifteen years ago, Stephen Barton set out to win the Don Ridler Award, the custom car world’s most prestigious honor. He died early last year, before he could see the CadMad, a beautiful 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham with a body by Pininfarina, on display in Detroit’s Cobo center, a result that took 10 craftsmen and $2.3 million. In Stephen’s place, Craig Barton hoisted the Ridler trophy overhead in celebration of the victory his brother dreamed of. After hours of scrutiny, a panel of seven judges named CadMad the BEST OF THE BEST CadMad was about 90 percent complete when Barton passed away. The Las Vegas resident launched the project 14 years ago, determined to win the Ridler and its $10,000 prize. He scanned his collection of 35 classics and hot rods and chose the Caddy. Then he called Jordan Quintall II and his son at Super Rides (Escondido CA) and told them to get to work. The Cadillac was a great choice. The car was one of just 99 built in 1959 with a body and interior by Pininfarina. Quintall and his son, Jordan, started by chopping 18 inches in length, 4 inches of width, and sectioning 2 inches from the lower body mass to give the car a more modern profile. After remnants were acid dipped to remove the lead Pininfarina added during manufacturing, the altered steel panels were tack welded together to serve as a visual model for the handcrafted custom body to follow. Four doors gave way to two, and the roof from a Chevrolet Nomad made the Caddy a beautiful sport wagon. Tom Nelson Racing Engines built a 632 cubic inch big-block Chevrolet V-8. The engine is bolted to a 4L60E C5 Corvette transaxle rebuilt by Phil Hayes. Fueled by racing fuel and boosted by a pair of 88-mm turbochargers, the engine 29

makes a neck-snapping 1025 horsepower and 950 lb-ft of torque. The Super Rides crew tucked the starter, AC compressor, and alternator under the floor at the back of the car, so that glorious engine is all you see when you lift the hood. Everything rides on a space frame with a backbone and peripheral elements fashioned from 1-5/8 diameter steel tubing. Super Rides hand-crafted the suspension and steering components, and installed Baer 6-piston brake calipers that squeeze 14-inch vented rotors with help from a hidden electric booster. The car uses coilovers at each corner. EVOD Industries machined the 18-inch wheels, which update the original styling. They’re wrapped in 235/50R-18 radials made by Vogue Tyre. EVOD also made the steering wheel, instrument bezel, and gauge surrounds. Classic Instruments crafted the gauges. Ron Mangus trimmed cut-down Recaro bucket seats pulled from a 2012 Cadillac CTS-V in leather.

Ron Heiden of Heiden’s Woodworking spent two weeks crafting the cargo floor using striped tigerwood, figured maple, and African wenge. Master pinstriper Lyle Fisk masterfully matched the wood grain in hand-painted dash and door surfaces. The original plan called for painting the car blue, but the color looked muddy, so Jordan’s chose a two-tone scheme of Fontana rose, a color Cadillac offered in 1961, and the titanium silver found on the Ford GT. Getting a flawless finish required rending a 50-foot-long paint booth to spray three Kustom Shop urethane base coats, four color coats, and half a dozen PPG clear coats. Super Rides spent 4000 hours building and finishing the body. Craig Barton couldn’t be happier with the car. “It’s gone beyond mere automobile status to become a true work of art,” he says. “My brother and the Super Rides folks had tremendous vision and the years they invested building CADMAD definitely paid off.” Indeed it did. 32
