“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

seeing all those cool cars lite a fire inside you Stop #1 on our Winter Road Tour 2019 is in the books...

I love that folks are taking their kids to these car shows. It makes a difference in the continuation and future of this hobby we love. YES...start them early. My guess is a lot of you reading this right now, got taken to an indoor show years ago by your dad, and seeing all those cool cars lite a fire inside you that burns today. It did for me! It’s all of us “graybeards” responsibility to cultivate the next generation, so this thing called hot rodding continues on for a long long time.

This past Saturday (Jan 12th) I loaded up the ol’ Canon camera and picked up my buddies Michael Young (Street Rods by Michael) and Greg Grove and we headed to Chattanooga TN for the Chattanooga World of Wheels show. It’s always more fun when you have other gearheads going with you. This one is part of the ISCA’s schedule and points show, so some nice rides were on display as competitors went for points and trophies.

Have you lite a fire in a potential young hot rodder lately...you need to.

We will have a feature on this show in an upcoming issue….stay tuned.

Going back to seeing our friends, readers and followers...nothing but great. How much better can it get then taking cool cars with like minded friends on cold Saturday...it doesn't...in my opinion anyway.

While you have the cars, truck and motorcycles to check out, along with all the other “stuff” the show promoters have as part of the show, the best part of the show is all the gearheads at the show.

Next stop for us will be in Nashville TN this coming weekend. Looking forward to seeing a lot of friends there too...great way to spend a Saturday as our friend Donald Walker says….

The best part of the show, in my opinion, is talking to all you gearheads. The second best part is listening to a hot rodder explaining something about one of the entries to their son or daughter or even a friend or spouse.

Live It Fully Everyday 5

Jimmy B.

Iconic McMullen Roadster Does Not Sell! The estimated book on the iconic Tom McMullen Roadster at the 2019 KISSIMMEE Mecum auction was set at $750,000 to $1,000,000. No one knew what to expect as this was only the 2nd time that the hot rod was going across the auction block. The first time in 2012, it sold for a cool $700,000. The way cool 1932 Ford Roadster rolle3d up on the auction block on Saturday Jan 13th and the bidding began. After is was all said and done, the hot rod DID NOT SELL, as it only hit $700,000 in the bidding. Would it have sold for a little more?? Maybe but we will never know what the reserve price was set at for this sale. Another iconic hot rod and race car, the 1954 Chrisman Bonneville Coupe crossed the auction block in Kissimmee also. After all the bidding and the hammer falling with the words SOLD being projected across the sale, the cool coupe brought $484,000 which made it the 6th highest price sale at Kissimmee 2019. If we only had hit the lottery‌...

Who would have thought 49 years ago in Peoria Illinois, that an idea so far fetched by a some of the guys from ROD & CUSTOM Magazine, of inviting hot rodders from across the USA to come to an event damn near in the middle of America, would grow into what is now called and known the world wide as the NSRA Street Rod Nationals.

Guess what...It Worked! As the saying goes, from humble beginnings come great things. The 49th NSRA Street Rod Nationals were once again held in Louisville KY (LOO-Ville by some) at the State Fairgrounds and Exposition Center. The event has settled in very comfortably at this location for many years, and why not. Easy to get to and around town too. Louisville is different things to different people. Of course it’s trying to see over 16

10,000 cool cars and trucks spread out on pretty much all the blacktop available. It’s the Vendors at the event. Literally you could build a car with all the parts on display for all 4 days that the event runs. The Builders Showcase featured some of the latest completed projects from a who’s who in the hot rod and car building

business. It’s also the swap meet that many a hot rodder comes for looking for that elusive, hard to find part to compete his latest project. It’s Women's World for the ladies to have fun too. It’s good food for when you get hungry after all that walking around, or just a couple of scoops of fresh ice cream to cool down a bit on a hot August day. The NSRA Nationals is all this and more! It’s not called the “BIG ONE” for no reason. The most important thing “The Nat’s” are, is a gathering of hot rodders enjoying the hobby they love. All the cars and trucks are motionless with you that guy or gal behind the wheel. The Nat’s are the friendships made over many years or after just one year. Not to sound cliché, but “The Nat’s” is a BIG Family Reunion. We 17

18

have one big family gearheads and we should be proud of our family. For 2019, “The Nat’s” is turning 50! The NSRA has planned some extra fun for this momentous achievement and milestone. If you haven’t been in a few years, you might want to think about coming….your hot rod family would like to see you this summer. For all the details and entry form for the 50th NSRA Nationals go to www.nsrausa.com or find them on Facebook . Photography by John Greenfield Story by Jimmy B

FOR SALE: One Well Used and Speed Proven Wind Tunnel. Who doesn’t need a bit more shaving on the old laminar flow? Not you? Well, how about that hot rod racer down the lane who might have a genuine use for it? No? Think of what great gift this would make to your local university and you’d have a stellar write-off! Originally built by a guy out of sheer curiosity about how aero stuff works and had the spare change to do it really right. Life has downshifted and the spot he had the tunnel installed is no longer available. This tunnel has improved the speeds and records of several dozen land speed cars including George Poteet’s Speed Demon that lays down wicked quick 400+MPH runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats. It is a first-class system with operational credibility and plenty of cheerful grateful testimonials. But wait, there’s more! The owner/builder/operator will put the thing back into full operational form so how can you resist a turn-key deal? Do your diligence and you will quickly realize there is more than a million invested. That’s a whole lotta McKinley's ($500), Cleveland's ($1,000), Madison's ($5,000), and Chase's ($10,000) beside the Franklin’s and Grants. The tunnel is an open circuit, Eiffel style. It was professionally designed and calibrated. Test results show repeatable numbers with less than 1% deviation between runs. The wind tunnel began construction in 2010. It took approx. 4800 man-hours to complete over a two+ year period not including building construction or the pit under the test section of the tunnel. The tunnel is 100' long and 20'+ high at the inlet end. The test section is shaped and approx. 9'-4" high in the center and 13'-6" wide, and 50' long. The three fans are built by Howden and are 150 HP each, 460V, and are 6' in diameter. The fans are controlled by a Mitsubishi Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) with remote controller in the control room. The fans pull air through the test section then the air recirculates in the room. Wind speed in the tunnel varies from about 10mph to 80mph depending on the desired speed and the shape and size of the test object. Test object should not exceed 25 sq. ft. in frontal area for most accurate test results. This is the size of a full size car. The VFD has incremental speed control for accurate airflow around the test object. Under the floor of the test section is a pit which houses the balance. The pit is accessible by a staircase opposite the control room. The balance is a large space frame and is mounted to Honeywell load cells which are designed to hold up to a 10,000 lb. vehicle. There are seven load cells which measure lift, drag, and side forces. All forces are calculated and recorded in an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet displays coefficients for all six forces and moments. It also calculates all forces in Drag HP, Drag LBs, Total Lift, Lift Front and Rear LBs, and Side LBs, all at a customer selected mph. There is also a bicycle balance for testing cyclists and equipment. This balance was used to test 2000 elite cyclists. Airflow is measured by 3 pitot tubes in the inlet and 2 static ports in the aft portion of the test section which feed to a pressure transducer panel. Air turbulence is eliminated by a 3" thick aluminum honeycomb panel in the fore part of the test section. Plastic netting was added for better control. Vehicles enter the tunnel through a hinged door in the aft of the tunnel next to the fans. The current room dimensions are 49' wide, 140' long, and 35' high. A lower ceiling will be acceptable. Included in the sale: Complete wind tunnel structure from the inlet to the fan diffusers. Mitsubishi VFD. Balance with load cells and complete wiring to the control room. Bicycle balance platform with Computrainer installed. Ski Jumper beam. A large variety of car mounting stands. Complete computer system with Windows OS. Data Acquisition System including 13 pressure channels with pressure taps to the pit. Aerolab smoke generator wand. The buyer will be responsible for the building and the balance pit, all of which will be dimensionally specified in the sale. At an additional cost, I can assemble everything on the new site for a "turn key" operation including training of new operator. The complete wind tunnel will be broken down and palletized to ship. Reconstruction will take approx. 2-3 months when the building is ready. The electrical wiring of the fans and control room will have to be done professionally on site.. Approximate cost to construct in 2010, not including the building or pit: $400,000 package cost for design plans, computer hardware, software, Data Acquisitions System, bicycle balance, smoke wand. 115,000 fans with inlet bells. 30,000 VFD . 80,000 materials. 210,000 building preparation including the pit and electrical. 230,000 labor. Price: $600K For more info
