“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

“ Every Picture Tells a Story” A Picture is worth a Thousand words they say...

use each week, I cant cover everything across the USA. I am lucky to have and thankful for some very special people who support the GEARHEAD GAZZZTTE with their contributions in the form of event pictures.

I would have to agree with that old saying.

Pictures evoke many different emotions and feelings, depending on the nature of the picture and the person looking at it.

On the East Coast, BIG Al Liebmann is covering all the great events in that region. He gets all over, as he shoots for HOT RODHOTLINE too.

I post a lot of pictures each week on social media and it is so interesting to see the response rate, type of response and the comments that come with each post. Some pics are immediate fan favorites and some are so-so and some just tank. It’s all good as not everybody likes everything.

In the Midwest, Larry Williams takes the snaps for us at various events in that region. In the Southeast John Greenfield covers a lot of territory shooting so many cool cars and motorcycles. Out on the West Coast, Michael Corazzelli and Craig Wise are pointing the camera lens and capturing so many bitchin’ shots for us.

Inside each issue of the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE, we use all kinds of pictures. Pictures help us tell you what is going on across the USA. Pictures help tell the story of the car shows and cruise-in’s we attend and cover. Pictures help us tell you about gearhead events too.

Out West we also use some of Michael Christensen’s work on our Facebook and Instagram page. We couldn't bring you the event coverage we do each week without these great folks. They are true professionals dedicated to bringing hot rodding to life one picture at a time.

We could just write about an event but without pictures we think it would be boring to you our readers.

It comes from the heart...THANK YOU so VERY MUCH!!

Live It Fully Everyday

While I shoot a lot of the pictures we 5

Summit Racing has announced its schedule of sponsored shows and races for 2020, which includes indoor car shows, drag race marathons and everything in between. The schedule is highlighted by the Super Summit 2020, the kickoff for the Hot Rod Power Tour and the final stop for the Summit Racing Midwest Drags Series, all taking place from June 5-7 at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. Check out the full schedule below. Summit Racing I-X Center Piston Powered Auto-Rama, March 13-15 All roads will lead to the I-X Center in Cleveland, Ohio for the 54th year of one of the largest indoor car shows, averaging more than 1,000 custom cars, trucks, and motorcycles; antique construction equipment; tractors; military equipment; and even aircraft. Get the particulars at the Piston Powered website. Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama, April 25-26 The Atlanta Motorama at the Atlanta Motor Speedway has grown into one of the largest festivals of its kind in the South. From hot rods to rat rods to motorcycles and monster trucks, there is something for everybody—and then some. Learn more at the event’s Facebook page. Summit Racing Midwest Drags Series, June 2-5 The Summit Racing Midwest Drags Series features racing at three tracks over six consecutive days. It has 12 classes including ones for daily drivers, diesel-powered vehicles, and straight-axle Gassers. And like another drag race event we all know well, all cars must be driven on public roads between each race—no trailers, towing, or other forms of toting. Our annual car show at Norwalk, Super Summit features a big non-judged car show, ‘fun runs’ down the quarter-mile, and a big Manufacturers Midway. The excitement continues when the Power Tour rolls into town to kick off the 26th edition of the gearhead caravan. Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, June 25-28 The 14th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals comes to Norwalk for four days of intense competition. This year is the 50th anniversary of the Pro Stock class, so you’ll see KB Racing’s Greg Anderson and Jason Line fighting hard to get a win for their sponsor (that’s us). More info is available at the Summit Racing Motorsports Park website. Hot August Nights, August 4-9 Reno and Sparks, Nevada play host to one of the biggest hot rod and vintage rock ‘n roll happenings in the world. You won’t be able to drive 50 feet without hitting a cruise-in or a concert somewhere in town. More information will be forthcoming at the Hot August Nights website. Goodguys Summit Racing Equipment Lone Star Nationals, September 25-27 Acres of show cars. Autocrossing. Swap meet. Thundering nitro-burning dragsters, burnout competitions, and NASCAR stock car rides. Some of the West’s top automotive builders and owners showed off their colorful customized cars at the 69th Sacramento Autorama at Cal Expo. The primary sponsor was O’Reilly Auto Parts. Billed as one of the longest-running indoor car shows in the world, this year’s event spotlighted more than 400 custom cars, hot rods, classics, motorcycles and specialty vehicles from across the nation. This vehicles competed for dozens of awards in various classifications. As in past years, the show touted the area’s significant role in California’s post-World War II car-craze era, when Sacramento became known as the “Kustom Capital of the World.” Live music, celebrity appearances, vendor booths and special exhibits were also set up throughout Cal Expo. In addition to the hundreds of vehicles competing for awards, hundreds more cars were on display in the Butch Gardner Clubhouse at the Cal Expo Pavilion building and the outdoor Autorama Drive-In near Building A on Saturday and Sunday. Numerous awards – including the 8foot-tall H.A. Bagdasarian World’s Most Beautiful Custom award – was handed out on Sunday. The Autorama was started by the late Sacramento businessman Harold 22

Bagdasarian in 1950. While serving as president of the local Capitol City Auto Club Thunderbolts, he talked club members into hosting a show to settle friendly arguments over the merits of their customized cars. The initial show, held at a downtown Sacramento auto dealership, had 22 entries. Bagdasarian promoted subsequent shows, which steadily grew in participation and attendance. Show ownership has changed hands over the years. Current show owner Rancho Cucamonga businessman John Buck, took over in 2005 and runs it and other automotive gatherings under the business name Rod Shows. “We had a great weekend with awesome weather, and even better custom cars,” Buck said Besides the massive Bagdasarian trophy, the show’s “Big B” awards pay homage to the Sacramento area’s rich custom -car history: The Sam Barris Memorial Award is a tribute to the late customizing wizard. Along with brother George Barris – the late maker of numerous handcrafted autos appearing in movies and TV series – the Illinois natives moved to Roseville and helped set off the post-World War II California custom-car craze. The Joe Bailon Award recognizes Joe “Candy Apple Red” Bailon, the Northern 23

24

California customizer who created the color that became synonymous with his name. The Dick Bertolucci Automotive Excellence Award – presented to the car with the best craftsmanship in assembly, fit, finish and detail – is a tribute to the longtime owner of Bertolucci’s Body and Fender Shop in Sacramento. Decades ago, Bertolucci established a national reputation as a top-tier car restorer, and his personal car collection is considered world-class. Many other awards were handed out by the ISCA to the different class winners too. Add in many vendors and activities for the kids, and a great gearhead weekend was had by everyone in attendance. Make you plans now to attend the 70th SACRAMENTO AUTORAMA in 2020...it only gets better with age.

By Dick Raczuk BRAKE SHOES—Perfect Fit! Here is a little brake shoe tip I’d like to pass on. It’s really hard to find someone to arc your new brake shoes. Here is a solution I came up with over 8 years ago. I cut the shoe as shown in picture. Then I clamped the shoe in two places to the drum. This gave me the true arc that matched the drum I was looking for. I then welded it up as shown. Still working good after over 10K miles. Getting ready to do it again. These were big Lincoln brakes on my roadster.

Dick Raczuk is a long time Hot Rodder as well as having created and owned KERKER Mufflers and now owns KOUL TOOLS. Corp. 31
