“the fun starts here”….
Junior Johnson Passes Away Junior Johnson, a stockcar racing giant whose career spanned the sport’s history as a fierce driver and an innovative mechanic and team owner, has died. Junior Johnson, a stockcar racing giant whose career spanned the sport’s history from its moonshining roots to its modern era as a fierce, hard-nosed driver and an innovative mechanic and team owner, has died. He was 88. Johnson’s passing was confirmed by the NASCAR Hall of Fame. He had been in declining health and entered hospice care earlier this week. Johnson was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in its inaugural Class of 2010. He won 50 races in NASCAR’s top division – the most of any driver without a championship – and added 132 victories and six championships as a successful team owner for many legends of the sport. Johnson won the second running of the Daytona 500 in 1960, then added two more triumphs in the Great American Race as a car owner in 1969 and ’77. His all-out style – honed from years of hauling illegal liquor at breakneck speeds through the North Carolina foothills – took a toll on his competitors and his own equipment, earning him a reputation as the hardest of the hard chargers. Johnson was also known as the Wilkes County Wildman and heralded as “The Last American Hero,” after a brilliant 1965 essay in Esquire by author Tom Wolfe. Johnson was enshrined in the NASCAR Hall of Fame in its first class in 2010, joining Bill France Sr. and Jr., Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty as the inaugural inductees. He remained involved with the NASCAR Hall for years afterward and contributed an operational moonshine still as an exhibit for the museum’s Heritage Speedway section. 6
National Corvette Museum Performance Gallery Undergoing Major Remodel The National Corvette Museum has embarked on a major exhibit remodel bringing one of the Museum’s earliest display spaces up to date with a design that truly reflects the sleek and stylish nature of America’s favorite sports car. “The Performance Gallery is one space in the Museum that has been around since the building’s grand opening over 25 years ago,” said Derek E. Moore, Director of Collections / Curator for the Museum. “In the early days an elevated ‘racetrack’ was in place to give display cars a feeling of motion and being on the grid, but due to difficulties changing out the vehicles, was later removed. The space has housed an interactive pit crew challenge, educational driving simulator and various artifacts through the years, but now needs more than a refresh. It’s time for an overhaul!”
In 2018 the Museum met with an exhibit company to get ideas and renderings on what the new space could look like. “We wanted not only a clean look, but also a space that would lend itself to showcasing historic racing videos and stories about each car on display. The concept is to have projection with each car, as well as digital labels that allow visitors to learn more through an interactive experience,” said Moore. “Rather than remove or paint over the existing racing mural, we will install a secondary wall that keeps it protected and intact behind the scenes.” Funding for the exhibit was garnered through a private donation. “It’s America’s Sports Car. In terms of car and performance for the money, in large measure, the Corvette street car can hold its own against the top sports car manufacturers around the world. It’s always something the common man can get into. My love of Corvettes carried over from my father. As soon as I could get one, I got one. We have a place that is celebrating the brand, celebrating the marquee, and the huge history of it. Having known there was a time that there was a prospect that the program was going to shut down – it’s almost unfathomable that we are now to the C8. We are to Zora’s dream of having a midengine and I’m ecstatic. I hope it will do what GM has been hoping for a long time and that is to bring in younger customers. I think’s it’s really cool we are doing this renovation to the Museum to have something more interactive, to have something the younger people will appreciate and be able to learn how unique Corvette is, and frankly sports car history.” The new exhibit is planned to open in late March, 2020 – with an official ribbon cutting slated to take place during the Michelin NCM Bash April 23-25. 7

Detroit Aut Article & Photography by Jimmy B
When gearheads hear the words Detroit Autorama, the majority of the time they immediately think about the RIDLER Award. They think of this with good reason as its one of only a couple PREMIER awards handed out in the show car world each year. When the doors open to the show each day, gearheads flock to the front of the show and all the gleaming, chrome plated , slick pant craftsman built cars, hot rod s and trucks. They want to check out all those rides going after the BIG trophy. Then there are the rest of the showgoers...a smaller but no less interested gearheads, heading for the very back corner of the main floor. It’s there they get on the escalator to head to “THE BASEMENT” in Cobo Hall and one of the coolest events all year long….The Autorama Extreme. If you have never been to this show within a show, you might aske, what is this all about. Let us a tell you a little bit about it.. First let us tell you what it isn’t. It’s no Ridler contenders, no big displays, hardly any stanchions and no carpet under the cars. 12

What it is when you head down the escalator….rockabilly music hits you before you see it, then its cars and trucks with patina, 30-40-50 year old paint that is cracked….tuck and roll interiors with some cracks in the material. It is also some cool customs, drag cars, car clubs parked together, and one bitchin car show inside instead of outside. That’s right ...take away the grass or blacktop and put a roof over it and you have a small taste of what the Autorama Extreme really is. Yes there are cars and trucks with some of the shiniest paint you will ever see, but they WANT TO BE downstairs because they are more worried about having a good time all weekend, versus worrying who they are up against for a class trophy. This is where the traditional style hot rods, customs drag cars hang out all weekend long. This is where the party is at, all weekend long. Add in vendors who are into the more traditional side of our hobby, automotive artists from across the USA, a Pin-Up Girl contest ( not trashy but very classy) live rock-a-billy bands and even legendary car customizer Gene Winfield chopping a top across the whole weekend. If it sounds like a party and a good time...you are absolutely right...it is!. Make plans now to check out the 2020 Autorama Extreme in Detroit and we’ll see you there Daddio!. 15
