“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….” The Autorama is more than the Great 8 and the RIDLER
to everything.
Hang on Motor City we’re coming to town...
The Autorama is more than the Great 8 and the RIDLER though. One of the highlights and must see features is the AUTORAMA EXTREME or “the Basement” as it is called a lot. This is such a cool part of the whole event. Laid back, cool rides with not many ropes or stanchions, groups of gearheads sitting together and having fun while tens of thousands walk by during the 2 days.
It’s SHOWTIME in DEEE-Troit! We are headed north later this week to attend the 67th Detroit Autorama. This one is one of our “MUST DO’s” during the year. While the Detroit Autorma is an “Indoor” car show, and some would say all indoor shows are the same, Detroit has a flavor all it’s own.
Back upstairs are all those cool cars, trucks, motorcycles and more! One thing that has a BIG presence is MUSCLE CARS. This is to be expected due to this being Detroit and the birth place of the muscle car movement.
There are a few “BIG “ awards handed out at different indoor shows, but the RIDLER Award, presented at the Detroit Autorama, is one of the biggest if not the biggest award given about all year long. Presented to one of the GREAT 8 contenders at Detroit, for a vehicle that is being shown for the first time anywhere. Some would argue that the AMBR award given at the Grand National Roadster Show in January each year is a s big as the RIDLER. Everyone has their opinion on this and mine is the AMBR is 2nd biggest. Reason...AMBR is only for Roadsters where the RIDLER is open
Add in TOYARAMA, the Pinstripers Bash for Charity, specialty displays of historic cars, and well you get the idea. If your not at the show, follow us on Facebook or Instagram for daily posts from the show. If you are there, stop us and say Hi!
Live It Fully Everyday 5

Goodguys Celebrates the ’69 Camaro at the 22nd PPG Nationals, (Pleasanton, CA)—There is little doubt that the Camaro is one of history’s most revered muscle cars, and that among all the Camaros, the 1969 model remains one of the most popular. It seems fitting then, that Goodguys plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Camaro in spectacular fashion. The Summer of ’69 Display presented by PPG will gather a collection of some of the most ground-breaking and historically significant Camaros for a special indoor display at the Goodguys 22nd PPG Nationals, July 12-14. The Ohio Expo Center’s Kasich Hall will showcase this spectrum of ‘69s from the ultra-rare COPO and Yenko examples, to some of the most influential custom builds to come from the hot-rodding community through the decades. Goodguys VP of Sales and Sponsorship, Ed Capen explained the significance of this year’s special Camaro exhibit. “Nothing quite like this has been done before”, Capen said. “We have reached out to General Motors to get this event on their radar to offer whatever manufacturer support they can provide for this historic gathering.” On top of that, there’s already a considerable buzz among the enthusiast community with significant examples already slated to appear. While applications and confirmation are still flooding in, we already know that heavy-hitting custom 1969 Camaros like Big Red, Mark Stielow’ s latest pro-touring creation, and the Goodguys G/RS will take part. The exhibit will also host the last two Goodguys Street Machine of the Year winners—the Detroit Speed-built “Tux”, and Roadster Shop crafted, “Inferno”. A great display of rare originals will be on display, too. Vehicles are being carefully selected based on significant and the impact they had on the hot rodding and the industry. Capen says “We are looking for the best ’69 Camaros in the world.” “If you have built or restored a significant Camaro, we would like to hear from you. To have your ’69 Camaro considered for the display, please submit a photo and contact information to Jamie Sa at Goodguys. Her contact email is jamies@good-guys.com

2019 is shaping up to be a landmark year for The Rodder’s Journal. It marks our 25thAnniversary. It’s hard to believe, but we introduced our very first issue at the Street Rod Nationals back in 1994. Like any worthwhile endeavor, this quarter-century has been a learning experience. So, first and foremost, we would like to thank you for your unparalleled support. TRJ never would have reached this milestone without you. We’ve hinted that something big is brewing, and now is the time to share. We’re moving our TRJ headquarters to Richmond, Virginia. TRJ has been headquartered in California for more than 20 years, and I have spent the vast majority of the past 40+ years as a Golden State resident. Now, it’s time to move on. The cost of doing business and the cost of living particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area have reached levels that are hard to fathom, and I don’t see an end to the steady increase in sight. We serve a national and even a global market, and it’s not fair to our loyal readers, nor is it sound business, to raise prices to support Bay Area overhead. So, we’re on the move. TRJ was born on the East Coast and we’re excited to return to our roots. That being said, we see this move as an opportunity to further our involvement in this hobby we know and love—from coast to coast. As an added perk, our Richmond headquarters puts us within a long day’s drive of a very large population of East Coast and Midwest-based hot rodders. And this in no way means we will be forsaking California or the Western states as a whole. In fact, I believe we will be able to participate in the hobby more coast to coast—and even internationally—far more than we have in recent times. Our sophisticated business plan is to spend less on rent and spend more on old cars and participating in the hobby. I don’t want to give the impression that the only reason we are moving to Richmond is its lower cost structure. I first visited the city when I was photographing Dave Russell’s Model A Victoria for TRJ #75, and I have genuinely developed an affection for the city and its people. The reasons are too numerous to enumerate here, but there are a whole lot of factors that make Richmond and the surrounding area a good strategic choice as a new home for The Rodder’s Journal. This is a big change for us and it is part of a broader plan that began last year when we brought our printing back to the U.S.A. And this isn’t the last change for The Rodder’s Journal. We’ve got a few more things in the works that you'll be excited to hear about. What we are not going to do, however, is make change for the sake of change. We are dedicated to continuing to publish the very best traditional hot rod and custom car magazine that we are capable of. With the move on the horizon, we’re extending our biggest sale until Thursday. All merchandise is 50% off, and some of these items won’t be coming with us to Virginia. You can learn more about the sale here. On behalf of myself and the TRJ staff, we would like to once again thank you for your dedication. We can’t wait to see where these next 25 years take us. Sincerely, Steve Coonan Publisher & Editorial Director The Rodder's Journal 10

If you are like a fair share of people, myself included, going ot a museum is not high on your list of things to do or see. If you are a gearhead though, going to a “CAR” museum is a little bit different, far more interest in that. Recently our good friend and awesome photographer Michael Corazzelli went to the National Automotive Museum in Reno Nevada. We’re glad he did, as the pictures here can attest.
The National Automobile Museum, located just south of the Truckee River in Reno, Nevada, displays historic automobiles from the late 19th century and from throughout the 20th century too. Most of the vehicles displayed are from the collection of the late casino owner William F. Harrah, and so the museum is sometimes referred to as The Harrah Collection. The museum opened in 1989.
If you don’t know about the museum or where it’s at, here is some info and history about it.
William Harrah had collected approximately 1,450 automobiles, which he stored inside warehouses in Sparks, Nevada. It was the 28
world's largest collection of historic automobiles, and was opened to the public. When Harrah died in 1978, HolidayInn acquired his hotel-casino company and the automobile collection. In 1981, Holiday Inn announced that it would sell the entire collection, a decision that received some opposition. Nevada governor Robert List attempted to delay the sale while working on a plan to have the state enact legislation that would save the collection. Businessman Thomas Perkins later led a group that was interested in purchasing the collection. Both efforts to save the collection failed. However, a nonprofit organization was formed that ultimately resulted in the construction of the museum. Holiday Inn 29
donated 175 of Harrah's automobiles to the group, while the remainder of his collection was sold during three auctions in the mid1980s. Another 60 vehicles were donated to the group by private owners. The museum's holdings of over 200 cars are spread over four galleries. Gallery 1 showcases cars built during the 1890s & 1900s, Gallery 2 features cars from the 1910s to 1930s, Gallery 3 the 1930s through to the 1950s, and Gallery 4 displays cars from 1950 onwards. Gallery 4 also includes race cars and the Off-road Motorsports Hall of Fame. Each gallery is linked by a themed "street", featuring vehicles as well as faux shop fronts. As the pictures ere show, this one is worth spending “a day at the museum!
