“ Ya Gotta know where to Go….The FUN Starts Here….”

DO NOT ASSUME that we already have an event’s info info comes from you our readers and followers.

We are only as good as what you send us to list gearheads….

Yes it does! You attend the events that you like and mean something to you. Big or Small events doesn’t matter. We need you to get the info and a flyer, if there is one, to us. We can share it if we know about it.

As you can see in this issue and if you have had the chance to checkout our website, and the CAR SHOW area in particular, car shows are back for 2020.

It’s not hard to do. Email us at gearheadgazzette@gmail.com and its done. We take from there.

As the year winds down, car shows and gearhead events really throttle back. One reason is weather in most of the USA, turn much colder and GASP...snow happens too. The other reason is the Christmas time holidays. There area lot of other holiday activities going on and even gearheads take advantage of doing those things too.

One very important thing to note….DO NOT ASSUME that we already have an event’s info. Make sure we do by sending to us. It’s ok if we get it 2 or 3 or however many times...just make sure we get it. Show/Event Flyers….can not stress this enough. Make a flyer for your event. It is a great way to get extra exposure. We use them in our social media posts as well as the magazine and the car show listing page. Make sure every flyer has all the info on it. The WHO WHAT WHERE WHEN HOW etc. The more info, the more people are likely to come to your event.

We need your help again this year in making the GEARHEAD GAZZETTE the best it can be in 2020. We get event info from more than a few different places. Obviously social media plays a part in gathering info to share.

Your turn...SEND US THE INFO! Live It Fully Everyday

Ed 'Big Daddy' Roth Art To Be Exhibited At Corvette Museum The exhibit will be open in 2020 and run for an entire year. Any hot rod or muscle car enthusiast growing up from the 1950s through the 1970s is likely familiar with artwork created by Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. He was the brainchild behind those well-known caricature drawings featuring different monsters sitting atop blown hot rods doing burnouts with big slick tires and flame-throwing exhaust. One of his most notable and famous drawings would feature the crazed green rat known widely as RatFink. One of "Big Daddy" Roth's biggest fans is Tom Peters, who was so inspired by Roth's artwork that he went on to become a long-serving designer for General Motors and is wellknown for his design work on GM's Corvette models. Although Peters is now retired, he teamed up for this special exhibit that will showcase Roth's artwork inside the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The exhibit is called "Car-Toon Creatures, Kustom Kars & Corvettes" that will open in 2020 and run for full year. Not only will the exhibit include Roth's artwork, but it will also be a recreation of his garage featuring vehicles such as the Orbitron, Mysterion, Orchid, Bubble Ray, and Tweedy Pie. Also part of the display will be the personal truck that Roth utilized for his pinstriping business. This also includes model kits, vintage toys, and T-shirts. Even more, the design studio used by Peters during his time at the GM Tech Center will be recreated along with a showcase of the Corvettes he created. Roth's widow, Ilene Roth, is providing many of the artifacts that will displayed in the exhibit, and she is organizing an East Side Rat Reunion that will be scheduled August 20th through the 22nd. This will be the perfect opportunity for the grandparents who were fans of Roth's work to introduce a new generation to RatFink along with other work created by Roth. 6

Plans for ‘American Graffiti’ museum in Modesto are moving fast. It’s what hot rods do! Modesto California could have a museum showcasing its “America Graffiti” heritage by June 2020, under a plan backed by several prominent residents of Modesto. They propose the museum in the former Warden’s Office Furniture Outlet at North Ninth Street and Coldwell Avenue. An estimated 20,000 visitors a year would view mementos of the cruising and racing that inspired the 1973 movie by Modesto native George Lucas. Leaders on Friday January 3rd,talked about the idea, which has been around for a quarter-century. They are looking for donations toward the roughly $3.2 million cost. They hope to open the first phase in time for the annual Graffiti Summer events this June. The 40,000-square-foot complex would include classic car displays, education about hot-rod engines and related topics, and an event center that could hold up to 700 people. Visitors could dine in a drive-in restaurant on the site and see films in a small replica of a drive-in theater. “The whole goal is when you walk in that front door, you are transported back to a night in 1962,” said museum board member Chris Murphy. He is the co-owner of Sierra Pacific Warehouse Group and a longtime Graffiti fan. The museum would not be a major employer, relying instead on volunteers for daily staffing. The planners include residents donating their expertise in finance, real estate, engineering and other fields. “We have a good variety of the people it takes to bring this together, but we don’t have a lot of deep pockets,” said John Sanders, chairman of the museum board. He is a retired businessman who has chaired the American Graffiti Festival & Car Show for 20 years. The place would be called the Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum and operate as a nonprofit. Its volunteer executive director to start is Cecil Russell, a former president and CEO of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce and a retired Save Mart executive. The museum might someday have a salaried director. The site is a connected pair of buildings erected in the 1920s as a seed warehouse for the Lyng family, which still owns it. The museum planners said they are working with the Lyngs to buy the property. The concrete buildings are single stories with 20-foot ceilings. They need new heating, air conditioning, fire sprinklers and wheelchair-accessible restrooms before anything opens to the public. The first phase would include space for car displays, which would change from time to time. This phase also has the event center, a gift shop and the drive-in restaurant. The eatery would mimic Burge’s Drive-In, which stood at Ninth and O streets until 1967. The second and third phases have no timeline yet. “Our Graffiti history is really important to what Modesto becomes in the future,” Murphy said. 7

Story & Photography by Jimmy B

45 years ago, a guy by the name of Gray Baskerville (if you don’t know the name...GOOGLE it right now), AKA “your Ol’ Dad” saw something in two guys in Southern California. Gray was a feature editors for Rod & Custom Magazine and HOT ROD magazine too. He made the rounds of hot rod shops and garages where hot rods were being built on a regular basis. At the time, guys were combing the junk yards and such to find parts for the car they were building. That’s how it was done. There was no 1-800 buy a hot rod part back then. Some of those builds , if we’re being honest, were quite scary as the work and craftsmanship didn't always happen.

Back to Gray. Gray knew 2 guys who were making some of their own parts, just to make a safer and better part for their hot rods. He saw something that needed to happen, at least in his mind. Pete Chapouris & Jim Jacobs were 20

those two guys. Gray saw the talent and skills in both of them and brought them together. That gearheads was the beginning of PETE & JAKES HOT ROD PARTS 45 years ago. Over time together Pete & Jakes grew. The demand for the parts they were making, which simplified building hot rods for many gearheads across the USA, plus providing a safer part too for them. After many years together, Pete and Jake sold the business. Time to do other things. Enter Jerry Slover of Peculiar Missouri. Jerry bought the business from Pete and Jake along with the iconic hot rods that Pete and Jake both owned along with the FAT ATTACK 40 Ford Convertible they built. Everything was packed up and moved to just outside Kansas City MO, in Peculiar MO, where it still is located today. There were skeptic’s that such an iconic business from Southern California would never make it in the Midwest. How wrong were all them! Not only did it survive, but PETE & JAKES HOT ROD PARTS has grown over the years. The Super Bell Axle brand was brought in under the Pete & Jakes Banner. Over the years Jerry’s son Jason became involved in the business and today, 21

22

if you call Pete & Jakes you will probably talk to Jason or one of their team members for the help you need selecting the perfect part for your build or having them build you a chassis in many different stages of completion. The 45th year in business is a BIG DEAL. What better way to celebrate than to invite hundreds of hot rodders and gearheads to come over‌.and they did! The day started out a little damp as rains moved thru the Midwest overnight, and there was a slight chill in the air, but nothing a jacket couldn't take care of. Some folks even came out on Friday afternoon to start celebrating early. Saturday Jerry & Jason and the whole Pete & Jakes team welcomed hot rodders with food and drinks, music, a silent auction and a lot more all day long. Awards for the cool rides that came out were all hand made. From our viewpoint, everyone had a great time! Near the end of the day and event, Pete & Jakes held an auction for some very cool and unique items, as part of their fundraising efforts. Pete & Jakes and the Slover family are big supporters of JDRF charity. Al the money raised at the auction went to JDRF and some big $$ was raised. Thanks to Jerry and Jason and the Pete & Jakes team for a great time, as we helped them celebrate #45! Here’s to another 45 years for Pete & Jakes Hot Rod Parts!

By Dick Raczuk

“I was con fused??????” Short time ago I had an issue with my coupe dying on a freeway. We checked fuel pressure and decided the relay was tripping up on us. (we turned the key on and could not hear the fuel pump running or see any fuel pressure). If the engine sat a bit , it started right back up. In fact, it started up and ran another 150 miles. Needless to say it was “nervous time” driving and not knowing when it would stop again. It’s hard to see what caused this episode if everything is working. Thanks to my friend Ed, and hours of checking this and that, he came up with the solution. Now if you take a look at the fuse in the picture...it looks good. (I always checked a fuse to see if the center section was still intact and it was) After taking a closer look you can see that the one leg of the fuse is darker. What happened is that when the fuse was installed some 10 years ago, one leg was outside of the receptacle. It made contact all those years, but finally gave up. Apparently it just kept getting weaker and weaker and finally gave up. I just glad it was nice to me and we made it all the way back from Phoenix. So my point here is in this discussion, make sure that when installing fuses in the fuse block, make sure both legs go in the fuse socket. Dick
